Im from norway and live in sweden.
Out of the scandinavian countries youll have the easiest time learning, and be understood by more scandis (even some finns) if you learn swedish, more so compared than learning other languages.

But honestly theres like 20 other languages you could learn before learning nor/swe that has much more utility, also considering scandis have amongst the highest english comprehensoun outside english speaking countries

Eh, as a native Swede I can sort of understand the other Scandinavian languages but I have to concentrate and it's only a rough understanding. It depends on how well you learn it but it would probably be difficult for you to understand what the other person is saying

The issue is the mutually intelligible factor is different for written and spoken, and the mutuality depends on how much that person was exposed to the other language growing up, going to vacation/shopping in the other country, and watching media from that country, so it wont be the same for you.

Danish is the worst, because its hard for the others to speak/listen. Even danes themselves struggle with spoken language - danish children statistically take the longest to learn their mother language compared to the rest of the world.

Swedens population is about double of norway and denmark, and is undestood better by norwegians, than swedes understand norwegian. This is mostly because a lot of norwegians go to sweden on vacation/shopping as mentioned. some older gen grew up watching pippi longstocking and emil in swedish. Norway has a wider dialect variety because of the islands and fjords has isolated generations more than in sweden, so even if you learn norwegian you will have a harder time understanding a lot of norwegians.
With swedish you might only struggle with some dialects close to denmark.

However since youre talking about med science i could also add i know a lot of swedes go to norway to work because it pays better.

I would say you should care more about pay/living situation than language, and that can even come down to what city youre living in, like id rather work in norway than sweden, but if its between oslo and uppsala id choose uppsala.

When it comes to location, I'm really trying to balance housing and my chances of actually landing a damn job. I would like to do something like molecular science/biotech/marine biology, but the housing in Copenhagen is super choked up and all of the students are competing for places to live.

I know Norway has a lot of coastal science going on, and I heard that they may be willing to subsidize the colleges for non-EU students a least a little, so I may go there.

Regardless of where I go it's gonna cost 20k+ up front before I even get my foot in the door, so I'm really just trying to maximize my housing chances.

Culture wise we're very similar.
I prefer the slow living outside cities, and its very similar in both countries.
theres a bigger difference between north and south nor/swe than there is between nor and swe, and i prefer north because its more back country.

Norway has 1 good show "trygdekontoret" imo, but im probably biased because i grew up there.

The big media houses often copy concepts off the US or each other or even produce media that broadcast in both.
Now even non-broadcasting platforms like amaz*n prime has shows produced locally using "old media" celebs
