Other than the Lone Wolf movies, which others here don't take themselves too seriously? That whole edgecore thing they're usually peddling never really appealed to me. It's a shame Japan never had it's equivalent of the Shaw studios.

>>1132549For me it's the opposite. I don't watch current movies but the ones I watched a few years ago (new star wars, hobbit, some other shit) lacked seriousness. It's as if they could end a serious scene with a joke in a "just kidding" sorta way. with kurosawa, there's desperation and drama everywhere. scenes are oozing seriousness, each fight is a conflict being released in an explosion. I'm honestly amazed with every one of these movies I've seen. I'm all over that "edgecore". I have a hell of a lot of respect for jackie chan and co. though>>1132440stuck trying to download metadata.

With that pack, the first season quality is pretty good, the rest are a bit dubious, but still worthwhile. Anyway, thanks for that upload. You rock. >>1132549Oh, don't get me wrong, those are brilliant movies, and I'm not looking for comedies. I recently re-watched the Lone Wolf movie series (and indeed the TV series - finally) and I was wondering if there was more material like that around with that kind of vibe. I mean, by the end, Ittō and a bunch of Ninjas are on skis while trying to kill each other. Completely absurd, but somehow the movie manages to pull it off. I like that. Edge? That's common. There's a lot of "critically acclaimed" directors I think are dog shit and feel 0 need to watch. Seven Samurai was made to be entertaining 70 years later, it still manages to entertain a lot of people and I'd say this guy is in the minority who like to be a film buff just for the sake of it. Does anyone have like a flowchart on how to get into old samurai movies? Like where should I start if I haven't watched any of these movies?
>>1253061I'd say just start with Kurosawa's most famous films and go from there. He establishes a lot of the tropes that are even used in American & Spaghetti Westerns. A Fistful of Dollars is a remake of Yojimbo, and The Magnificent Seven is a remake of Seven Samurai.https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000041/
>>1200283Im that anon >>1160043Thought id check this thread againIll get on it.
>>1253061Akira Kurosawa is one of the best film makers of all time and basically invented half of the tropes you see in western movies. Stanley Kubrick once received a letter from Akira Kurosawa, spent over a month writing his reply due to how honoured he was, then kept the letter as one of his most prized posessions for the rest of his life. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, among others, have also listed Kurosawa as one of their largest inspirations, ultimately leading to Kurosawa being listed as one of the top 5 directors of all time. The obvious films to start with are as follows: Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Sanjuro (sequel to Yojimbo), then continue to his 80's films, Kagemusha, and Ran. Definitely watch Rashomon at some point as well, it's often times credited as the reason they added "Best Foreign Film" as an award at the Oscars.
>>1253345>watch Rashomon at some point as well, it's often times credited as the reason they added "Best Foreign Film" as an award at the OscarsOften credited by morons, maybe. Why don't you look things up before you open your blowhole, fatty?
>>1253348It is, though. The academy added the award because countries that were previously unknown for making films, like Japan, were starting to make international best sellers which were often times highly influential in western cinema. Rashomon is the greatest example of this type of film you could possibly find, and was almost certainly the #1 example of why this new category needed to be added. How could you be this mad that a director who attempted suicide whilst in absolute poverty might've been slightly overcredited on IMDB or somewhere when the supposed fact is still 90% true?
Just watched The Sword of Doom on 35mm at my local theater and now I've gotta see the Satan's Sword Trilogy. I'm sure someone's got that lying around, right?
>>1253349>Rashomon is the greatest example of this type of film and was almost certainly the #1 example of why this new category needed to be addedSorry. Wrong. Incorrect. A misstatement of fact. Not accurate. Etc., etc., etc.Academy awards for best foreign films have been given since 1947. Rashomon was made in 1950 and won the oscar in 1951. Nobody invented a new award category for a film that didn't exist.>>1253452>Sword of DoomOne of the all-time greats. You're lucky to have seen this in a theatre.
>>1253839When the first Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929, no foreign-language film was honored. During the early post-war era (1947–1955), eight foreign language films received Special or Honorary Awards. Academy leader and board member Jean Hersholt argued that "an international award, if properly and carefully administered, would promote a closer relationship between American film craftsmen and those of other countries". The first foreign language film honored with such an award was the Italian neorealist drama Shoeshine, whose citation read: "the high quality of this motion picture, brought to eloquent life in a country scarred by war, is proof to the world that the creative spirit can triumph over adversity". In the following years, similar awards were given to seven other films: one from Italy (The Bicycle Thief), two from France (Monsieur Vincent and Forbidden Games), three from Japan (Rashomon, Gate of Hell and Samurai, The Legend of Musashi), as well as a Franco-Italian co-production (The Walls of Malapaga). These awards, however, were handed out on a discretionary rather than a regular basis (no award was given at the 26th Academy Awards held in 1954), and were not competitive since there were no nominees but simply one winning film per year.[5]A separate category for non-English-language films was created in 1956. Known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, it has been awarded every year since then.[6] The first recipient was the Italian neorealist drama La Strada, which helped establish Federico Fellini as one of the most important European directors.[5] TLDR; you're conflating the one-off foreign film award with the permanent foreign film category, which is what everyone else is talking about when they say Rashomon was major inspiration for the invention of said category. now that you've revelaed you've been misunderstanding the entire covnersation I'm going to take any further comments from you as cope, good bye
>>1253842Nice copy-paste, fatty.(a) 1947-1955 and 1956- awards are identical except in how they were given;(b) Rashomon had little to nothing to do with the change to a competitive format in 1956;(c) Nothing you've posted contradicts any of this;(d) Try not to be so much of a fucking weeb.
