For me it's the opposite. I don't watch current movies but the ones I watched a few years ago (new star wars, hobbit, some other shit) lacked seriousness. I recently re-watched the Lone Wolf movie series (and indeed the TV series - finally) and I was wondering if there was more material like that around with that kind of vibe. To be fair, he did ask to name a modern movie that comes even close to The Seven Samurai and got no response.

I'm no cinema elitist but to the guy who gave Seven Samurai a 5/10 if you watch movies just to say you watched them well I feel sorry for you. There's a lot of "critically acclaimed" directors I think are dog shit and feel 0 need to watch. Seven Samurai was made to be entertaining 70 years later, it still manages to entertain a lot of people and I'd say this guy is in the minority who like to be a film buff just for the sake of it. I get watching something like L'avventura even if it bores you to tears. but come on Akira Kurosawa movies are all made to be entertaining, and they succeed wonderfully.

I've been playing Ghost of Tsushima lately so I got the urge to watch Kurosawa movies again... tried to watch 'em all a couple of years ago but bounced off Sanshiro sugata. Saw Ran and Dersu Uzala when I was a kid, Seven Samurai a couple of times. It's slower moviemaking than we're used to nowadays, but you have to be a bit lame not to give it it's due.

I'd say just start with Kurosawa's most famous films and go from there. He establishes a lot of the tropes that are even used in American & Spaghetti Westerns. A Fistful of Dollars is a remake of Yojimbo, and The Magnificent Seven is a remake of Seven Samurai.

Akira Kurosawa is one of the best film makers of all time and basically invented half of the tropes you see in western movies. Stanley Kubrick once received a letter from Akira Kurosawa, spent over a month writing his reply due to how honoured he was, then kept the letter as one of his most prized posessions for the rest of his life. Just watched this a couple nights ago. Pretty fun flick, but some of those horse stunts looked not so good for the horses.
I love this genre, and east asian film in general, just wish they were a bit more careful with their animals.
