>Thread Question:
Why does Rifts get like 80% of the love, when the other systems are so many and they all have plenty of personality? Is it the lack of source books?
>>
>>98015249
Palladium hasn’t published or supported much of anything but RiFTS, and even most RIFTer articles are about RIFTS.

After the Bomb 2E has had an article in years despite a new Kickstarter and a retroclone.
>>
>>98021283
Oh wow, someone actually replied. Cool!

If you look at the forums for Palladium, the other SDC systems as they call them, are more popular than they appear here on 4chan.
>>
>>98025686
Yeah you know it really is a shame Palldium doesn't have more love for other SDC systems. Hopefully they can be more popular in the future.
What are your favorite games that feature SDC systems?
>>
>>98027917
Systems Failure, always. I'm running stuff from it now. Bill Coffin is a legend.
>>
>>98029588
I've heard great things about legend and its percentile system.
Good to hear! Yes, Systems Failure does sound like a great SDC Systems.
What stuff do you enjoy running from it?
>>
>>98029649
Working with NORAD or the Free Cities League or the Wyoming Irregulars or running that one shot or two shot from Rifter involving Sulfur Gulch.
>>
>>98029649
I though Kevin had a pretty bad falling out with Bill Coffin over Systems Failure. There's a pretty lengthy thread up on TBP where Bill spills his spaghetti.
>>
>>98015249
I had the same question. I always wondered why they never made a document for the stuff that repeats from setting to setting.
>>
Palladium Fantasy 1st edition. Before it changed to an SDC system and the spellsystem changed.
We had tons of fun playing TMNT and Heroes Unlimited.
I think I was the go-to guy when Rifts was concerned, and I admit owning a lot of books for it.
>>
>>98030268
I inherited plenty of Rifts stuff and Rifter 8 from my father.
>>
>>98030268
What was the old spell system like?
>>
Well, the first thing I do is completely ignore "roll with the punch". Almost no player I've had ever uses it, so for me its no big loss.
If you want to make combat a bit deadlier and faster, use the house rule that only hth/blunt type attacks to damage to a character's personal SDC. Things like guns, knives, etc go directly to HP.
Scaling combat encounters is not very straight-forward because there are several things to worry about:
1. Number of attacks they have
2. Attack/Dodge/Parry bonuses
3. How much damage they can do
4. How much SDC/HP/Armor they have
These values all have a pretty wide range of possible values, both for the PCs and the things they fight. You'll have to look closely at what values your PCs have in these areas then try and come up with a good match.
Personally, I just usually make a rough guesstimate to start off with, then just fudge the numbers on the fly if it seems like things are going much easier or harder than I originally anticipated.
You have to design them with the PCs in mind factoring in the number of attacks, combat bonuses,
>>
>>98032814
I my players used roll with impact a lot when I started throwing missile using mobs at them. When you get up there in harder stuff it becomes a valuable option.
>>
Njghtba-bros! When you roll to make a character and you roll the 90% thing where you roll twice in the same catagorey, and then you roll the same trait twice, do you add the effects together? It doesnt say not to add it together nor recollection doubles.

I rolled animal magnetism twice. This trait adds 8 to your PB and MA so that would be 16, right? The character isnt a complete barvie, I also rolled double on the alien trait and got unusual skin color and 100 mouths.

If I really wanted to abuse this I would have chosen physical perfection twice.
>>
>>98032814
With SDC, most of the settings and systems are comparable in terms of health to damage to other quasi-realistic quasi-hardcore systems.

GURPs is very squishy in terms of HP and the damage of reduction is the only thing that keeps people from being instakilled. Same for Palladium systems.

D20 modern characters gain back 2 HP per day in the hospital or good care. That system you start off with about half the HP and weapons do about half as much damage.
-
-
At the very least the SDC should be converted to HP and against unarmed strikes, should heal back like SDC.
>>
>>98037812
Does Palladium have all conventional saves? Like reflex saves? What do people roll against a fireball or flamethrower?

I know their is a save against poison.
>>
I checked out RIFTS because I heard it was wild and I have to say its way too demented for my to GM.
>>
>>98039601
Is Savage Rifts just as demented?
>>
systemwise 1e is better 2e introduces ppe sdc and other unnecessary palladium megaversal system cruft
settingwise i could be mistaken but i suspect 2e has more info

do not pass the opportunity to pick up some sourcebooks im particularly fond of old ones and adventures on the high seas both have 2e versions bill coffins stuff is great too western empire mount nimro library of bletherad not familiar with eastern territories or land of the damned but theyre supposed to be pretty good yinsloth jungles 1estatted not familiar with a 2e version is fairly kickass too for a more inyourface exotic pulpy sns setting

some people swear by the 1estatted adventures in the northern wilderness which i dont own

the pfrpg 1e system was one of the best alternatives to dnd "heartbreaker" has become a loaded word but i feel the original definition applies out there in the days of adnd 1e; and the setting is a brilliantly executed classic pulp fantasy sandbox it belongs in the same lineage as greyhawk and the wilderlands and gray box 1e forgotten realms any dndderived system including cnc should be a great fit

both settings and 1e system get way less attention from the old school rpg online community than they deserve
>>
>>98039601
GMs are naturally demented so he must be especially not demented!
>>
>>98039660
I have not read 1e rifts but I have read mechanoids which I understand is the precursor to rifts. Is there a difference?
>>
>>98040413
Not really. Mechanoids is more of a spsce scifi setting than a full game. Rifts is a full game+ that includes everything under the sun. Vast difference.
>>
>>98015249
>Why does Rifts get like 80% of the love, when the other systems are so many and they all have plenty of personality? Is it the lack of source books?
I think it really boils down to Kevin liking Rifts the most and so he focuses the authors on that. Thus there are more books, thus they sell more and it just goes into a cycle from there.

Save vs Magic.
Save vs Poison
Save vs Psionics
Save vs Horror
Save vs Disease
Save vs Death
A fireball and flamethrower would most likely use a Dodge roll however, as save vs magic is mostly used for resisting nonphysical magic.

I need help!
I've ran a few Solo RPGs myself using settings + adventures in different game systems.
However, this time around I decided to take a chance and play setting only, which is hard for me, because I prefer taking my characters on pre-established adventures rather than creating my own for my characters to go on.
For reference I am playing The Mechanoids, 1980s Palladium RPG TTRPG.
In my adventure I haven't even reached the climax of the story of the first 1/3 of the setting.

In this story the characters have united the Tribes. The reason doing this is that there is a planetary threat that one of the Tribes has created. This tribe has been using another big badass warband tribe as a puppet and running things behind the scenes. Ultimately the "good" guys won the war with their created Tribal alliance. However, an evil Tribe still remains, and the artifact they are using to threaten the planet with destruction is still being used. Ultimately they are still going to destroy the planet's surface to establish their dominance.

They are a mountainous tribe and because of various reasons, can survive this (extremely powerful psionic users, intricate underground mountain networks, leader is the strongest psionic on the planet and an elite fighter, high council consists of great leaders and psionic users, etc.). They are roughly a population of 600.

So how do I actually win this? The tribal alliance is a population of about 20,000 and have agreed to help take down the mountainous tribe as repayment for uniting them and beating up the big bad tribe that was causing a lot of problems. However, if we try to invade, the psionics would just kill many of them as their mountain complex is very defendable. If I used my own sci-fi tech to bomb the mountain to dust, they would just escape and flee. We have no knowledge of their tunnels or mountain complex. I've thought of starving them out, but we have no way to know how much of their food stores are left.

The solo RPG thread wasn't much help, just suggesting to do siege bombing, but that won't work and won't solve the situation really.
I think the bad guy tribe won in the end.

90% of nonRIFTS books are just one flavor of apocalypse or another, done with minimal need for new rules or content. Are you mostly regular guys fight zombies, bugs, or nightmares?

Splicers are freaky enough to fetch a few books & Supers are vast enough to fet some extra books, but its mostly just gonna be Rifts or Fantasy
>>
>>98039590
>Like reflex saves?
There's dodge (if you can see it) and autododge (Usually if you can't see it. Varies from setting to setting.) Both are tied to the Physical Prowess stat and your hand to hand skill. This is not counting parry, which is specifically about swatting away incoming things. Dodge takes an action while parry and autododge do not.
>>
>>98046956
It's usually in the back of several of the books. Just about every sdc setting has these pages.
>>
>>98066398
>>98046956
Then you have exotic ancient weapons, which is a big fat wad of weapons. I ain't gonna post all that.

Would getting stabbed on yggdrasil give you magic knowledge enough to know rune magic?
Can a non-diabloist learn wards?
>>
>>98067588
>Can a non-diabloist learn wards?
In my opinion scholarly mage classes like leyline walkers and wizards should be able to learn just about any sort of magic. Argue with your GM about it. Usually people like to throw on penalties like it can only be cast at half your level or take twice as much ppe.

Bumping just because I like reading about rifts

>both settings and 1e system get way less attention from the old school rpg online community than they deserve

Total agreement. I have a revised core book, Old Ones, and High Seas. There is more than enough there for several solid campaigns.

The 1e combat system is far more sophisticated than people recognize because Palladium combat is more infamous for the excess of later editions. Having the class based combat styles is an absolute coup on the D&D in play at the time.

The 1e magic styles have an organic variation that makes them way more immersive. There is a lot of learn spell/cast spell but things like summoning and diabolism open the path to a different kind of engagement with magic. Most of the classes have something only they can do which gives them depth.

I have some absolute horror stories about a pair of goblin brothers that sleazed their way through the Timiro giants adventures. I have never run a game for two more opportunistic scumbags in my entire life. We were 18-20 so there was no filter really but damn. Miscreant and Diabolic shouldn't be a checklist.
>>
>>98077439
Is the Bowman a class in PF 1e? That is my favorite OCC.
>>
>>98077484
Yeah, Long Bowman. They get that arrow critical at 6th level which is pretty good.

My best character ever was a human assassin with major psionics and huge tits (PB19). She tricked a lot of people into dying with those knockers.
>>
I always wondered why the weight of the body armor in Systems Failure was so heavy and don't match with the modern weapons book.

Then I found Heroes Unlimited revised from 1988 and the body armor is the same.

Could I do math to figure out what the body armor should be by 2000?
>>
>>98081447
You could but you coukd just eyeball it
>>
>>98081447
At the least you vonsider weight of armor. Every campaign I've been in we just ignore that unless it's something like 40lbs gun on a normal strength character.
>>
>>98037873
Update, everyone agrees you can take animal magnatism twice, if ever so because it was random. Also because my character rolled PB of 4. So Im saying he has a cleft lip and his morphos is just ainhumanly handsome. Also he is covered in mouthes so it all works.

I cant decide to call him Spit Face or All-Bright. Im having trouble finding a nightbane campaign so I think I'll try to get into a Powers campaign and have him use the All Bright name as a superhero persona. The fantastic MA and PB might help in that regard as well.
