That yellow trim was an absolute bitch to paint with '90s citadel acrylics no wonder they switched to make them a metallic (even though it looked way worse) later on edition.

Agreed. The design of MkVIII Jes Goodwin marine is perfect except for the adoption of the shoulder trims IMO. Beakie-style clean pad + studded pad looks way better and makes sense to compress iconography to one shoulder.

Things were easier back then, it seems.
Though, of course, not without a fact that 2000 AD guys seemed to be pretty laid back. Pat Mills later even created Redeemer for WH40K, which can be called straight away collab between 2000 AD and 40K.

Great work on the cleanup, it's fascinating to watch the progress.
I really love the look of the Mk V, I wish there was a good modular set for it I could use with my classic RTB-01s and 2nd edition stuff. It just exemplifies that barely holding together look of some of the early 40k power armour art.

For me in particular it'd be great as "my dudes" space marines are specifically a bunch of stuck in the middle of bumfuck no-where sector, isolated from much of the Imperium (so I can just easily ignore the main "plot" and what anyone feels like they have to try and inflict on me about it), having to rely on their local forgeworld production a ton rather than getting nice standardised, all the best materials, "modern" suits shipped to them from like Mars or whatever. So really inconsistent armours (and the RT beakies are already pretty varied) with tons of improvised looking adaptations to keep them functioning would play right into that vibe.

>>
>>98051588
You could try using a tube tool to block the shapes out and then do some manual sculpting to tone down the hard edges on the ribbing for a more "hand sculpted" look. Voxel remesh once you're done and it should look and print really well.

I'd love to see more sculpts based on scans (scanbashing?). There's some guy on isnts who's using 2e and of necromunda scans to do old school primarchs, it'd be cool to get some modular power armour based on the monopose kits, or even new mixes of the chaos warriors that got posted last thread. A man can dream, I'll probably give it a go if and when I get some actual free time.

Blender and a regular Wacom tablet yeah. Pressure sensitivity is a huge help.
I've been using 3D software a long time, but the classic make the donut tutorial remains an excellent way to start learning the interface. I do the new one every time there is a serious version update. But you really have to put in work to master the UI or prepare to be frustrated.
Then it's just google searching for the answer to whatever has you currently stumped.
The only Blender youtuber I like is Aryan (hard surface modeling) because he is funny as fuck and his channel is zero bullshit. Fuck Blender Bros. have never watched a 3D clay sculpting video, the tools are fairly intuitive compared to a polygon workflow.

>>98051870
Using anything but primitives would be antithetical to hand sculpting (digitally.) I did make a simple rig to repose RTB01s but abandoned that whole project. Digitally kitbashing minis is fun as fuck if exceptionally tedious, but that's working in 3DCG. That's art, but I live for finding the flow and the brain drugs from making something good.

Today's progress. I made it to the legs at last. Release on Sunday?

As a Zbrush mini sculptor myself, I've long wondered what it would be like to try to sculpt digitally like our ancestors Jes and the Perry brothers did. By taking small, high poly spheres and using TrimDynamic, DamStan, Flatten, Orb_Cracks, and Folly_Clay ONLY.

Your work here, admirable as it is, has unfortunately confirmed that it would fucking suck and be tedious as shit but capture the vibe perfectly.

I'm pretty sure Knucklebones does this and his shit is sovl supreme.

How many chaos space marines is too many chaos space marines in 2nd edition? I've got about another two dozen more of these monopose CSM left to strip and re-paint (courtesy of illicit dealings conducted in the alley behind my LGS, naturally) as well as one metal CSM with a flamer. Should I start looking for HQ models, vehicles, and more terminators and CSM with special weapons now, or will I need more than ~40 CSM for a proper army?
I suppose I should also try getting the metal CSM from the 2e period too, but I'm having a very hard time finding spare plastic arms, weapons, and backpacks.
>>
>>98062919
CSM army gets filled up quite fast, especially with support added. Lord itself eats up ton of points in first place, regular squad of 5 of what ever flavor of CSM costs easily over 200pt. Look at the codex, see what kind of army you want to play, figure out what synergizes best together and try to fit it into 1500pt army. You won't get everything you want on table all together so having options is nice.

I play Khorne Berzerker army, so I got lord with terminator armor and chainfist, mark of khorne and praise of khorne, roughly 200 points. Bunch of berzerkers in squads of 8 with mix of chainaxes and chain swords, little under 300 points each. I got cultists to be used as a meat shield,5 points each, usually field them in large horde of 20 models. I really like the deamon possessed dreadnought, fast and tanky, always draws huge amount of fire that otherwise would hit other units, great unit for less than 300 points. I've yet to get any other daemons besides my bloodthirster but flesh hounds seem to synergize really well.

Play some games, see what works for you. Buy models you want.

This is the deepest I have gone in on a full resculpt and it is tedious as shit for certain. It's a good tedious but definitely RSI inducing. Probably going to break 20 hours all in.
I'd say it's a 50/50 split on base geometry and detailing as far as project time goes. Certainly reflected in a lot of the old metal range releases, where the base body sculpt would get reused a bunch, with just variant details sculpted on top.
Knucklebones is pretty rad, with a more sane mix of polygon and vertex modeling. A little to loose and sloppy sometimes, but looking at his meshes has been pretty informative.

Achilleos did a lot more fantasy art that, because of the match-ups between what GW and Citadel had licenses for (2000 AD, LotR, D&D, Dr. Who, etc.), ended up on the covers of White Dwarf and some ancillary publications like Ravening Hordes. In his book Amazonas, he said of Alien War:

>This picture was commissioned for a role-playing board game, but to the best of my knowledge was never used. There is nothing like this particular painting represented anywhere else in this book; a strictly science-fiction piece packing serious hardware. There are quite a few; Asmodai, Ezikiel, Azrael, and Brother-Ancient Bethor all got freshly robed models for the 2e Angels of Death codex, then the Jes Goodwin veteran squad shortly after it came out. Plus that other guy with the Gunslinger rule, probably a coincidence that he has the same style of robes.

I disagree, and I had to rack my brain a bit to bring up some old memories. I had a very clear memory of buying one of these in 1992 for $30, or just about that. Adjusted for inflation that's about $70 today...still not a bad deal exactly, if we discount that wonk that you mentioned earlier because let's be real here, no one would pay for this shit today unless they were buying the nostalgia because even by the standards of the day, these were pretty shitty. $70 for 30 minis isn't bad...until you consider another number that I remember extremely clearly, and that was the minimum wage in Washington state in 1992. I remember it because I was earning it. It was $4.25 per hour. That was a lot of flopped Whoppers to get me that boxed set, and while it may have "only" been $70, it sure as fuck felt like a lot more than that at the time. (Which may be why I still have those minis, or most of them anyway.)

The big thing at the time was that they were cheaper than metal. (They were also shittier than metal, but even in something as niche as miniatures the market back then, as now, was more than happy to trade quality for a lower price, so now you understand that today's race to the bottom isn't anything new.) That's not saying much, as metal was expensive. The big draw for me, besides being cheaper than metal, was that they were much easier to work with. 1/2

I agree and it's still the best value for money 40k has ever had.
>>
>>98101792
But it's not the best deal we ever got. $70 for 30 poorly detailed and ill-fitting (again, by the standards of the day, never mind today because jfc these things make Bones look amazing in comparison) is not terrible, but we now live in the age of inexpensive and high resolution resin printers. $70 is a lot of resin. And in a somewhat ironic twist, people have lovingly scanned and digitized all of those old and quaint minis for us, so we can print as many of them as we want. THAT is the best deal that we've ever had, and something that my 16 year old self could never have imagined back in 1992, when I had to fill up the tank in my truck (gas was 90-something cents a gallon unleaded out here at the time, leaded was slightly cheaper, which is why most of us kids knocked out the restrictor that kept you from filling with leaded and bought that instead when we weren't stealing it), drive two towns over to Bremerton where the nearest game store was, and see if there was anything in their pitiful inventory that I actually wanted, because that's how things were purchased back then and to be honest, it kind of sucked.

No, we've got it pretty good right now. GW is charging too much for their shit? They always did, but you have alternatives now. In fact, you can have all of that stuff from the 90's that goes for way too much on Ebay and you couldn't find at your local store back then, and for ridiculously low prices to boot. We have it pretty good right now. Thank you for reading my Ted Talk. 2/2

If inflation and buying power explained it all, why aren't some old models costing as much as new models today? The old plastic Dark Elf Sorcerer costs $20 today while new equivalent plastic characters can cost over $40. Razorwing fighter costs $65 while Crimson Hunter fighter costs $96. They're both the same size models and come with the same number of sprues. Ork Stompa and Gorkanaut cost the exact same $150.
>>
>>98101792
But it was ~30 bucks for the box of marines shrink wrapped to a softcover copy of Rogue Trader? Making the box more like $10-15. Which for kiddy me was still a lot of money, like a whole years worth of spending all at once.
>>98101812
If your only previous miniatures were monopose soft lead Ral Partha fantasy and Mithril LoTR, it was mindblowing. All those bits, and easy to pose because of the shoulder nubs. Plastic cement instead of superglue. The paint didn't rub off like on lead. I was super into all the imported rebranded Japanese mecha model kits and RTBs felt like an extension of that, but tiny.
My only other big GW purchases from that era were the Tyranids and Terminators box (a mild disappointment beyond the Tyranid warriors) and then the 2E Box set. And while there was a load of carboard and books inside, it was also a miss with the monopose minis.
Still nothing near as bad as the BattleTech box set of the time, which might have been the biggest disappointment of my wargaming youth. No miniatures inside!
Yes, resin printing and dedicated scanners changed the game 40 years later. Nothing can compete.
>>
>>98102247
>If inflation and buying power explained it all
It doesn't, and I never claimed that it did. It does however dispel the persistent myth common to the hobby (particularly among those that haven't been doing it all that long) that in late 80's and 90's Citadel was some bargain brand that was all but giving stuff away for free. It was not. Their stuff was expensive back then too. One of the big differences back then was that they appeared to be pricing their products based on what it cost to make them, not how desirable they were. (The other big difference is that a lot of it sucked by modern standards, but going there tends to rile people.)>>98103161

>~30 bucks for the box of marines shrink wrapped to a softcover copy of Rogue Trader
I don't remember a combo being $30. I clearly remember it being the box only. I'd already had a copy of RT before I'd purchased any Space Marines and wouldn't have bought a second one.
>If your only previous miniatures were monopose
Everyone's only previous miniatures were monopose, anon, even GW's. Multipart minis of that era were made in multiple pieces to make things easy for the caster, not the owner.
>Plastic cement instead of superglue
A fair comment, and why I cringe whenever I see people today commenting on using superglue on their plastics.
>paint didn't rub off like on lead
I still have lead minis from high school (1990-1994) with their original paint jobs that were not even topcoated. This is unfortunately a skill issue, anon. (Or you were trying to use acrylics from that era, which sucked the shit straight out of a dog's ass.)
>a mild disappointment beyond the Tyranid warriors
GW never did a plastic monopose Termie that didn't look horrible to my knowledge. My Tyranids, alas, did not survive to today. They were simply too fragile but were otherwise great sculpts, and were probably our first hint that maybe there might be something to this plastic fad.

I have a couple of the old multi-part heavies sprinkled into my beekee squads. There's some life-support equipment sculpted onto the backs instead of the regular backpack, but I think that's mostly so any gunner model can take any heavy weapon without worrying too much about the fit.

They still break apart any time you drop them unless you pin the gun to the shoulder.

I bet it would be, but your other choice is to convert a multi-melta. The Space Marines didn't get one in Second Edition. Kim Syberg converted his famous Space Wolf Long Fang multi-melta from a heavy plasma gun.
>>

Not the biggest wolves fan but the overall faded look of the armor here (maybe due to the printing of the time) looks a lot better than the action figure-y blue GW uses in its marketing. That melta looks cool.
Maybe I'll scramble at least a combat squad of beakies. In the same lot I also acquired one of Mark Copplestone's Death Eagles marines that could work as a sargeant for then. Very distinct from Mk6 guys however even though he's from the same era.

It really was this colour. Kim Syberg was one of the first great heroes whose excellent conversions and paint jobs got them featured in White Dwarf magazine (specifically, it's issue 185 from June, 1995), even though he didn't work for GW. Similarly, Bobby Wong's Blood Angels and Ultramarines showed up on a couple of occasions as well despite his never having worked for GW or Citadel.

The RT chaos heavy weapon sprue autocannon would be a good starting point for the conversion.

Good evening, /grog/. I am in need of your assistance. I've been digging through some old catalogues and I've come across a model I can't seem to find anywhere else. This is a page from the 1996 monster mail order catalogue. What's the deal with that chaos warrior rider model on the bottom left of the page? Not Egrimm, the one next to him. This model appears to have only ever shown up in this specific catalogue. It's not featured in any of the other catalogues I have access to. What's his deal? Why doesn't he have feet? None of the other chaos knight/rider models from this time period look like this guy. He appears to be utterly unique and as a result I'd like to add him to my collection, but I've never seen this guy online anywhere and "chaos warrior" is a little too vague of a search term if I actually want to find this specific model. Am I just blind/have I overlooked something obvious, or was this model really only ever found in this specific mail order catalogue?

Hmmm... He should have a part number that begins with 070106, then.

The other two models in >>98117276 are 070106/3 (Bolter 13, "Brother Harris") and 070106/2 (Bolter 10, "Brother Hamilton"). Maybe this means Johnny's part number was supposed to be 070106/1, as there isn't another model in the Blue Catalogue with that part number!
>>
>>98117511
Brother Sheer and the dead Space Marine laying on his back also show up in the late summer '89 catalogue under 070106. I don't see anything in the Blue Catalogue for 070106/1, 070106/9, 070106/12, or 070106/13. I wonder if Sheer, Johnny, and the dead guys fill any of those slots.
>>
>>98117589
This is starting to make sense. I bet Johnny's part number was supposed to be 070106/1.

In the late summer '89 catalogue, there are several blisters of tactical marines from series 070106. Most - but not all - of these models appear in the Blue Catalogue with the same prefix. The individual model numbers match the photographs in summer '89 catalogues; the only differences are the models that are completely absent.
>>

Yes, I think that the brass/copper look as painted by the GW studio is just right. I won't be trying to replicate it exactly, but it is my guide. I've aslo really been enjoying getting to grips with a tarnished copper effect on some of my models.
>>
>>98117819
>>98117589
..I just had a hilarious thought.
106/1 is still the trade part number for the blister pack of RT marines. 10612 and 10613 could also be easily misread as 106/2 and 106/3. What if someone accidentally went through and deleted the "duplicate" part numbers on the sheet when the order came in to the print shop for manual paste-up?
>>
>>98117880
That very well could be. I'm dumbfounded how Brother Sheer isn't in there. In addition to appearing in blisters of Space Marines, you got duplicates of Sheer and Hamilton in the Tactical Squad blister-box. Even though he's not in the Blue Catalogue, I think I've had more Brother Sheer models than any other single metal beekee.

To be fair, all the panel lining on the free scan is gone. It's the definition of soft.
>>98121912
Let's race to see who can resculpt it slower.
>>
>>98122015
Yeah, even painted it looks pretty soft.
Even on my 10k printer the detail just isn't there.
>>98122422
Yup,
>no panel lining
>soft edges
>no lenses on either visor and targeter
>no definition on the pouches, which also lack buttons
>no grill on the helmet and belt buckle
>no barely defined robbing on the cables and front of the feet
It's even more drastic when you consider that metal models tend to be overly sharp, more than plastic at times because metal reproduces detail very sharply.

Having a go at cleaning the rough scan on nomad. Working from photo references as I don't have an original. Not sure if I'm butchering it, as I've been staring at it for two hours, but at least it's starting to look less blobby and more crispy.

Yours is missing his (slightly crooked) beak rivet, did you shave it off?
>>
>>98127545
There's no rivet on the model and no evidence he ever had one - the beak is as smooth as a baby's bottom. This one's second-hand, but usually carving something like that off does leave a small trace. There are also some slight differences in the mold lines between Griffin's, Johnny's BA one, and mine. I wonder if it wore off the master during some later mold refreshes, especially since Griffin's seems to be smaller and misshapen compared to the one in the White Dwarf page.

>I’m looking to start collecting an old(er) hammer army. I can’t decide between 2nd, 3rd, or 4th edition. Any suggestions?
Do it like you might have done back then: grab a core ~2000pt second edition army with a few hundred points of alternate stuff you can swap in. That should be roughly 1000-1250 in third and fourth depending on how you wargear up. Tack on a ~500 point combat patrol/Kill team force with some conversions for specialists for maximal 4e fun, and then fill in the spaces with other stuff that seems fun. Be aware that in addition to the 2e/3e gap, there are a bunch of wargear combinations and special characters who were legal in 3e, or with some codexes, but not in 4th. So it behooves you to have a handful of different HQs built if you plan or hope to play multiple editions, and a few multirole models and extra special/heavy weapons for your infantry can carry you even farther.
For example, my 2e/3e Canoness has a power fist and Combi-bolter. She's legal until the Witch Hunters codex (GW started heavily-restricting Power Fist access outside Marines after the CC rules update in 2002). My post-Chapter Approved update one has paired chainfists representing an Eviscerator. She's extremely not legal in 2e and wasn't legal in 3e until late 2001. My Hero-level models can either run as Characters for 2e when I use the girls as allies, squad leaders in later editions, or in several cases can work as Palatines. Storm bolters were wargear-only until the WH codex, but a Sister Superior packing one with some backup frags was still a pretty good choice. Infantry multimeltas are pretty great in RT/2e and hot dogshit afterwards because they lose their blast and average combat ranges go way up. So I only kept a couple and converted the rest to heavy bolters or flamers. My immolators have magnetized turrets for heavy bolters and multimeltas once those became an option. And so on and so forth.
>>

The originals weren't as bad as a lot of RT stuff, but they weren't amazing either. But let's talk business here. I know absolutely nothing about 3D editing beyond fixing bad .stl's and mixing and matching parts in 3D Builder, nor do I know anything at all about scanning models. Assuming that I wanted to get this thing onto the internet, what's the best way to go about it?
>got some other things too
>>
>>98143541
Poor to decent:
Make a shitty turntable and take photos with your phone. Pirate metashape.
The Johnny floating around was done this way.
Good to very good:
Build an OpenScan mini, pirate metashape. If you already have a real digital camera, that's cool, you can build a better version of the OpenScan.
Any step you can automate reduces the tedium factor in an incredibly tedious process.
Exceptional scanners are using prosumer tech with expensive hardware setups.
If you want exceptional scans there is way too much hard earned institutional knowledge to convey in a 4chan post. From light sources to priming techniques to how you process the output.
There are tele groups dedicated to scanning that aren't super hard to find.

I came across this: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NrGlod1Fs59UpWLwR1kPewiChVi0s3dKLdgOlsWTULE/edit?tab=t.0 for the game system itself and I've seen some miniatures but apparently GW C&D'd them? Did files get uploaded and distributed anyway for printing?
>>
>>98146765
It feels like it's been a while since we last did, innit?
>>
>>98147370
Yeah, it's a RT parody/homage game. It released a couple weeks ago, along with a really nice range of LE-02 inspired marines (or scrungaloids, as they call em).
The whole thing got immediately C&D'd by GW and the (paid) STLs were removed, it took like a day.
The STLs are available again, but they're free now. I suppose the GW lawyers allowed them to be released as long as the creator cannot profit from them. I read the game, it's got some fun rules regarding paintjobs, the rest of the rules seem ok, it's all very tongue-in-cheek.
You can get the models here: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/birmingham-wastes-expedition-sample-pack
