Magic the Gathering: No UBShe's Muh Kween EditionPreviously on...>>98012621This is a general for a version of Magic the Gathering that excludes 3rd party IPs, these cards are known as "Universes Beyond". This thread is not a duplicate of any other general, it is not a fork of any specific general. There is growing support for versions of Magic formats that exclude UB, for example Planar Standard. This general is the place for those discussionsThis general is as legitimate as D&D Old School Renaissance threads and it exists for similar reasons.Discussion of Magic the Gathering where no set or release that required 3rd party IP licensing can be mentioned. >can't neatly colorshift 6 characters
>>98062432So, uh... Which one of those color shifted characters is supposed to be green? They do still have all 5 colors right?
>>98062446Original>B>W>R>GB>GThat's the problem. Jace was the fucking blue one, and he can't be colorshifted because he's doing the colorshifting.New line up looks like>W>R>U>WU>BIt doesn't even make fucking sense since Ajani has been WR before and Garruk has been GBU Garruk would have been more interesting.
>>98062446I think shifted Ajani might be Jund.
>>98062418Tam is the key to all this.
Color-shifted Loot and/or Fblthp when?
>Pictured: Garruk fighting Garruk, 5 minutes before Garruk and Garruk agree to stop fighting and go shove Jace in a locker.
he is doing everything he can to phase out upkeep from the game next. dismissed the fact if one wants to take an action before draw as "a worthy sacrifice". this is why recent designs like sagas trigger on mainphasewhat a clown we have at the helm
>>98062781The good part is that he will never be able to errata upkeep to mainphase entirely because it would make cards like necrogen mists complete turbo aids.
>>98062792Wouldn't writing it as "first mainphase" accomplish said goal without breaking cards like Necrogen mists?
>>98062845No, the reason it triggers in the upkeep is to not lock you out if you are in topdeck mode. Of course you can still respond to the trigger if it is a first main phase trigger but it would be far more opressive because it would make you discard any topdeck that isn't an instant/flash card.
>>98062792sure but he will push the new cards away from it propably
>>98062845it would make some cards outright nonfunctional
>>98062651She's a funnier character than we've ever had before
>>98062667Colorshift that little shit into an evil version and then reveal that it was actually evil all along
>>98062735GARRUK'S ALREADY BEEN GOLGARICOLORSHIFTING HIM TO BLACK ISN'T NEW OR DIFFERENTWHO SIGNED OFF ON THIS
>>98062781>There's no reason for it to existThe upkeep used to have a clearly defined goal that is what it says on the tin, a phase for you to pay for the upkeep costs of your permanents. But the game largely moved away from giving permanents any sort of maintenance costs (which personally I think was a mistake), so he isn't wrong in saying that nowadays the upkeep step serves little to no function.
>>98064050>the game largely moved away from giving permanents any sort of maintenance costs (which personally I think was a mistake),I think it should be the norm for creatures to have Vanishing. It won't even affect most 1v1 formats because they're too fast. But it will mean that problem cards can't stick around indefinitely
>>98064061A lot of power creep issues would be solved if they simply gave powerful permanents some kind of maintenance cost. This would immediately tone down all decks that cheat stuff into play. Imagine if Emrakul had "Upkeep {15}" or something. Suddenly you can't just Show and Tell it into play and win the next turn.
>>98064050he also said he wants it gone simply because it's annoying
>>98064076>The problem is the 15-drop and not cards with infinite manacheatDidn't even solve the other half of Sneak n Show.
>>98063883Funny how?
>>98064275It's called giving an example you leprous half-monkey
>>98062418>TQECL was pretty good, but unfortunately underwhelming in terms of power. Not in a bad way, but in a "too fair for anything outside 4c evokeslop to see play". SOS was surprisingly disappointing. I wasn't expecting a lot of change, but I assumed then they said "we're gonna do more stuff outside just the campus" we would actually get to see a more colorful view of Arcavios, but it apparently just meant converge creatures. I still annoyed about Blech, maybe some sort of deck will see play depending on tomorrow's ban announcement, but most content creators agree WotC won't be willing to pull the trigger on anything because "technically standard is flourishing".

Never forget, no matter how twisted and evil a world or villain is, it/they can not be even slightly mean to trannies and gays. The Magic multiverse is metaphysically pro-LGBT. Even the cruelest torturers, child rapists, and cannibals are incapable of being rude to gays. They can't even think it. The multiverse itself prevents any configuration of particles and fields that would allow the thought to exist.
>>98067688Okay thanks for the update
>>98066705I think wotc themselves were a bit confused about it for a while, but afaik the current state of things is that Liliana was haunted through two different vectors for the longest time. The first is the ring that had been in her family's possession, which stored a fragment of the soul of the necromancer Lim-Dûl, whose possession of the ring had seen him haunted by the wizard Mairsil. And there may be more souls stuck in there. The second vector is the Chain Veil, a relic of the Onakke, an extinct civilization of ogres native to Shandalar. From the sound of it the Chain Veil may contain, or at least channel, the souls of millions of Onakke. Both Lim-Dûl and the Onakke have expressed that they mean to mold Liliana into a suitable vessel for their resurrection. But it's less clear whether their agendas are mutually exclusive or if they could be accomplished in tandem, if not symbiotically. Although now it might not matter at all since Liliana separated herself from the Chain Veil.
>>98067861Looks interesting. How does he(?) rank among Grixis commanders?
>>98067662I wonder where Jace gets all his confidence from. I mean he's great at coming up with plans, but he's not so great at coming up with plans that actually work. And he's great at believing his own sales pitch, but he kinda sucks at second-guessing himself. Idk for some reason he's just brimming with self-assuredness despite a spotty track record at best.
>>98065152is it easy to find games in the modern pauper format?
>>98067899He's a typical self-insert protagonist written by theater kids. A desire to create a false reality often correlates with a lack of rationality, and in this case, this worldview clearly bleeds into the character writing.
>>98067880It’s just tap-untap sloppa I’m afraid
>>98067625Back when they were printing made-for-Commander walkers pretty consistently I was sure we were going to get him any day, but it seems his window of opportunity has passed, especially since mono-color commanders seem to be taboo now. At least I can still play as his weird goat twin in Dota.
>>98067899>I wonder where Jace gets all his confidence from. I mean he's great at coming up with plans, but he's not so great at coming up with plans that actually work.He is, after all, meant to be Urza for the new age.

>>98067339>
>>98067625>>98068393Leshrac was named after Chris Page, an early playtester, designer and developer for quite a few MTG sets. I think Mark Rosewater or even Garfield himself like in 00s or early 10s decided that they will be avoiding references like that.

>>98067910Yup, if you live in a capital city here in Brazil there’s probably at least one LGS that sees regular pauper weekly events. Lots of minor regional tournaments too. I live in a state with a rich MTG history, first ever brazilian LGS is from my city, so we have a very strong pauper/legacy scene. Pauper weeklys on my main LGS usually gather around 20-30 people on a Thursday night. >>98068807Premodern weeklys started happening on a regular basis only at the start of this year, from what ive seen there’s like 8 to 12 regulars that attend every week, so it’s a good start i guess. But pauper and legacy are still kings here (and commander, of course. But fuck commander).>>98068914I’m happy that nothing from the Mono red madness pauper deck was banned, this shit has literally made me decent money grinding local tournaments and MTGO.

>>98062781Was he the driving force behind making Sagas tick up on mainphase1 start, instead of in upkeep? >>98082593Well Necrobloom is the obvious recommend. Also in abzan is Karador Ghost Chieftan.Tayam Luminous Enigma is a fairly similar buildTeval The Balanced Scale would also be a strong pick.Zask Skittering Swarmlord is good if you don't mind playing insect tribal because there's no conditions on playing insects from grave (eg finality counters or otherwise exiling them when they die) you just get to cast them over and over againHogaak Arisen Necropolis guarantees you some leave triggers even if your commander dies, or rather IF your commander dies. But maybe doesn't offer much other utility. The Mycotyrant doesn't interact with the grave but it can shit out tokens which is what you want if Insidious Roots is going to be a key playmaker in the deck.If you want to build around Insidious Roots I'd say you want Necrobloom, Mycotyrant, or Teval. If you want leaves-the-grave in the command zone I'd maybe say Karador or Hogaak. Having an Abzan commander would make a big difference over just golgari because you can run pic related which is one of the best mass-recoveries in the gameSomeone's going to bitch at me for not mentioning Muldrotha. It's an obvious pick, and it would make recovering Insidious Roots easier, but Muldrotha is kill-on-sight at any table with a collective IQ of 100
>>98082709right, the thing is I don't want just another reanimator deck. the recent lorehold precon added a lot of cards to the strat and I really want red in it for all the synergy it brought. it would need to be some partners for the 4 colors but maybe I'll just gravitate towards boros. should've specified a bit more, sorry
>>98082788>I really want red>but I also want to run Insidious RootsYou're going to drive me insane, son.Pic related is exactly what you're looking for. Makes tokens for Insidious Roots, has access to red.But if you want access to all 4 fucking colors then yeah you're not going to have a solitary commander that has anything to do with your deck strat. There is precisely 1 WBRG commander and she cares about combat damage, Saskia the UnyieldingWith traditional partners there's a couple options but I'll limit myself to ones that might arguably fit your theme rather than just giving you access to colors, because if that's all you want just play the 1 WBRG commander mentioned above>Ravos, Soultender with Tana, The BloodsowerThis actually might be the best you're going to get. Ravos recovers from grave, Tana makes saprolings if she connects in combat which you can use for Insidious Roots. You're probably never going to connect with Tana and Ravos is 5CMC but at least both cards fit what you're trying to accomplish.>Reyhan, Last of the Abzan with Akiri, Line-Slinger OR Bruse Tarl, Boorish HerderReyhan cares about putting things in grave, the other two do nothing for your game plan at all but they are boros.>Vial Smasher the Fierce with Sidar Kondo of JamuraaNeither of these help your game plan in any way shape or form but they are rakdos and selesnya respectively.Aside from that, the last ditch effort would be either:>Elmar, Uvenwald Informant with Wernog, Rider's ChaplainOr>Othelm, Sigardian Outcast with Sophinia, Spearsage DeserterThey're from an unmentionable source, but got UW'd. Of those, Othelm is the only one to actually rez from grave, but Sophinia doesn't interact with that side of things at all. There I've helped you as much as it is humanly possible.
>>98082815>Ravos is 5CMC>going to drive me insaneI know

>>98083207I'm surprised by how much I ended up liking Murders at Karlov Manor. Aetherdrift had so much potential design-wise but they fumbled the core mechanic and the lore was fucking retarded. EoE and Thunder Junction were definitely the weakest for me, I can list less than 10 cards off the top ofy head from both sets combined, just bland. The rest was ok, didn't love Bloomburrow as much as other anons did, maybe because it was the set that made me quit standard for good.Overall impression is: ok. If they stuck to this with a slower release schedule and maybe some smaller, in-universe sets in-between I'd actually be happy with the state of the game in general
>>98083255>the lore was fucking retardedIf oil-slurping Mad Max vampires and insectoid speed zealots are retarded then I stand with the retards, they are my people and their cause is mine.
Rules question:If a card says when you PUT a +1/+1 on a creature, put that many plus an additional one insteadAnd another card says DISTRIBUTE a number of +1/+1s, is that still putting? I know it sounds silly but the wording of this game is so fucking autistic and I don't see a ruling for the cards on Scryfall
>>98082788You could do The Cooler Teval, to fuel all your leaves-the-graveyard needs
>>98083393Distributing is the same as putting. Each creature that gets a counter from Yannik gets an extra one from Conclave Mentor
>>98083255>>98083324I think Vehicles were a mistake. I would maybe be willing to accept coaches and carriages and perhaps some high fantasy bullshit, but cars and UFOs can fuck off.I don't think we'd ever have had Aetherdrift if it wasn't for the streak of sets based on movies. OTJ was obviously one of those but I think Americana myth and legend is fine as a setting, the problem was that it felt so fucking hollow because it's a true hat set like MKM. Duskmourn was actually excellent except for the 80s nostalgia bullshit, again a feature of trying to rip off movies. I love enchantments and enchantment creatures and I actually thought the story of Marina and Valgavoth was one of the most interesting things they've written in years.

Horror designs were good, the house was cool, the mechanics were solid.>>AetherdriftToo much "wacky races" not enough "death race." Multiple planes in one set is a cool concept I hope to see again, but the race felt contrived.>>Tarkir: DragonstormIt was fine. I did the same for Duskmourn before coming around on it and picking up some packs here and there. The other sets I drafted multiple times and cracked a least a box worth of product overall.
>>98083699>I was skeptical of space opera in Magic but they nailed it. Fun mechanics and cool setting, love to go back.I agree with this except the robots and spacecraft. There is a version of commander out there where everyone expects to be left alone to "do their thing" and not really be fucked with.I liked Distraction Makers when it was the 2 guys talking about the state of the game, but one of them seems to have left and the other guy is just putting out videos with some of the stupidest takes imagineable. He put out a video just recently in which he literally said:>he views other players as his allies until its time for someone to try and win>the game is about everyone trying to accumulate resources together>board wipes are bad because they don't advance your game plan>fogs are better than spot removal>fogs are good because people full-swing and leave themselves vulnerableThe crazy thing is I'm pretty sure this guy has actually played for decades and plays 1v1 formats. Everything he said strikes me as the sort of person who got into Commander through boardgaming and has never played 1v1 in his life
>>98067613Why don’t you just flicker reality acid for one mana to dab on a hexproof commander
Can't find any higher resolution of this, do I just buy a print and scan and stitch it as best I can?

>>98087216If you can name me a 1 mana flicker that works on enchantments, sure.To my knowledge there's just Teferi's Time Twist and Displacer Kitten in blue

>>98088056>sky*ceiling :^)
>>98088056>check the card>hold on, there's something funky with this art>flip itthat's a man
got to play the new lorehold precon and liked it a lot. and holy crap it's resilient. had 3 board wipes and could just rebuild fully in one turnsome of the new cards like the monkey and the RW creature with prepare spell did work
>>98090858Apparently it's very strong. Boros grave shit is an interesting direction that opens up a lot of weird plays. It almost makes up for boros' shocking lack of net-positive draw
>>98090896yea the new quintorious walker is crazy value. goes +1 and setups the grave pretty much for free. not too easy to kill with 6 loyalty especially if you make a token right away to protect it. and it's a straight up wincon you can activate right away if you happen to have even a decent board
>>98092435Im glad it seems to indicate that they're not gonna make all planeswalkers legal if theyre still printing the "this can be your commander" text
>>98092827was there ever any word by the actual designers? I thought it was purely baseless community speculation. same with hybrid
>>98086056>Everything he said strikes me as the sort of person who got into Commander through boardgaming and has never played 1v1 in his lifeThat probably does describe Gavin, I remember hearing Forrest got into it after doing a few card arts. Both of them have never had particularly good takes on commander, their comment section usually pushes back against anything they have to say on the format outside cedh. I remember they were really sore about how they got tons of pushback for their pro-hybrid views while Maldhound's crew didn't get that much pushback, but that's because they probably didn't realize Maldhound and Elk's audience are way further Left than most Magic audiences would normally be, even compared to the MTGGoldfish people.>>board wipes are bad because they don't advance your game plan>>fogs are better than spot removal>>fogs are good because people full-swing and leave themselves vulnerableReading the comment section from Gavin's most recent video was so funny. It's basically everyone reminding him that 10% of the rares from the past 7 years are basically auto-wins in commander if they can stick on the board for one or two turn cycles, making removal and boardwipes WAY more relevant than a fog with flashback.
>>98092995Thinking on in more, I should probably clarify that he likely did play 1v1 a lot back in the 90s/early-2000s, but he realistically hasn't played 1v1 outside FNM either since 2016 or even as far back as the 2000s. He's always bringing up his UG madness deck, which makes me think he hasn't really been all that interested in standard since Torment rotated out.
>>98092894I believe back in the day MaRo commented that it was always their intention that planeswalkers should be commanders and they disagreed with the RC ruling that they couldn't beSo it's on the list of things MaRo specifially doesn't like about Commander rules, including hybrid mana and wishes
>>98093113that would explain the sudden flood of hybrid cards in every set recently
>>98093189Hybrid has always been MaRo's pet project. I don't know if he invented it or what, but we do know that he invented Companions, which are all hybrid and were supposed to make Standard more like Commander. The man is a narcissist and I hate that even people who are critical of WotC still talk about him with reverence because he's done so much for the game. The man is a corporate stooge. He's on record as saying that when his higher ups told him to design for Commander he didn't like it because he didn't like the format>inb4 "le ebbin based xD commander le bad!!!"MaRo now plays Commander, plus he accepted his orders to design for it even when he could have just cashed in his chips and left if he didn't like it. If you ask me, his problem with the format was that it was more popular than anything he personally designed and that's why he then went on to design Companions because it genuinely fucking upsets him if the success of Magic is not attributable to him.>that would explain the sudden flood of hybrid cards in every set recentlyThere's definitely a risk that this will be the summer change that has been promised. I definitely think a few months ago WotC was paying Youtubers to promote it, pic related being a notable example when in their video at the time WotC took over the format they said changing hybrid mana wasn't something they DIDN'T want to happen. But a bunch of other "influencers" pushed the narrative too>more choices means more fun!!!No. There's only like a couple hundred hybrid cards, you're not meaningfully getting more choices from changing their rules, and WotC alone can print whatever fucking cards they want if they think players need "more choices"What it will do is mean that cards that are hybrid colorless like Beseech the Queen get splashed in decks they should never be in>but it's 6 mana colorless!Yeah and only 3 black, which even precons can make>Thriving lands>Exotic Orchard>filter lands and filter creatures
>>98093251who the fuck actually wants to run thriving lands
>>98093714People playing precons, which is my entire point. I'm not saying "run thriving lands" I'm saying even the most mediocre decks it is possible to build have no problem getting access to colors outside of a commander's color identity. Now imagine what an actually good deck can do with shit like City of Brass, or even just treasures. I don't want to see people playing fucking Rakshasa's Bargain in their new boros graveyard deck. It doesn't even matter if the hybrid cards are good, it matters that color identity is the defining rule of the format and it shouldn't be fucked with just so Mark Rosewater feels that the format that eclipsed any format he ever helped create is now finally being rebuilt in his image
>>98093251What kind of weird cope is this?>They can make it in a perfect Christmas scenarioIs not the same as >They can make it consistentlyNot only that, it's genuinely retarded line of thinking to build your whole deck around a one-off tutor. This is why Commander players never deserve anything resembling respect. They concoct these fucking absurd scenarios where they hard draw every 1-of in a row then demand people take this scenario seriously.>Oh no look out the monoW deck is tutoring a card with mv 3 or less because he drew perfectly!Okay and then what dumbass? Was the problem Beseech the Queen or the fact their deck is loaded on tutors for a cheap wincon they shouldn't have been running in the first place?>Shills pushed this super hardNo, people with brain cells rightly pointed out this was how the cards fundamentally work and autists like (You) threw a fit because you're under the mistaken impression that your format isn't dominated by 4c/5c decks owing to the slow pace and trivial colorfixing with fetches legal making access to more colors a colossal advantage with no meaningful drawback because you're never at risk of being aggro'd out by a monoC deck exploiting razor-thin consistency margins, because they don't exist. The fastest fucking deck in your format is a 3c deck that tries to turbo into Ad Naus. That alone should tell you how crippling color identity has become to deck variety which is ALSO a large part of why you're seeing so many legendary creatures with random WUBRG abilities now.Not to mention designing for this fucking troglodyte rule is producing more color pie breaks than every hybrid card put together. Wild Magic Surge explicitly undermines "red can't destroy enchantments" by literally letting red destroy target permanent. Or how about Saw in Half letting black get clones? Resculpt? All due to the fact EDH players want to cling to color identity for aesthetic but can't grapple with the gameplay implications because they're retards
>>98094524>>Oh no look out the monoW deck is tutoring a card with mv 3 or less because he drew perfectly!>Okay and then what dumbass? Then you read the next reply in the convesation dipshit:>>98093782>I don't want to see people playing fucking Rakshasa's Bargain in their new boros graveyard deck. >>98094529>"I don't want it because it's the rules!">Your rule is retarded and undermines how the game works at a conceptual level for literally no benefit in any form. >>98098922propably needs another precon reprint. I'd say it's more than likely they will be in many future decks if the other precon duals with land types are anything to go by. look at vernal fen for example. marvel perhaps could have some of these thanks to the 4 color deck
>>98097387Yeah, snacker and the auroras from dissension combine well with faithless looting, thrill of discovery, and pursue the past. With the latter you try get all your combo pieces and fill your hand. With snacker you try get recursive cheap blockers along with spirit mascot, which gets +1/+1 counters when one or more cards leave your yard. Once you have a tireless tribe on the field and an inside out on your hand, you discard to buff tireless and cast inside out. The auroras in your yard trigger since inside out is multicolored, then discard them again before it resolves and swing with a 17/1 (most of the time 4 discards is reasonable to pull off). And if for whatever reason combat is not possible you can always fling the fucker to your opponents face. I’m a blue mage through and throught so it’s rare that I enjoy a boros deck but I love this one so much.
>>98099350Not auroras, eidolons, sorry. Aurora Eidolon and Sandstorm Eidolon
>>98099350oh damn I just casually check pauper every now and then and had no idea about eidolon/tribe. I only saw a snacker/mascot value grind variant with pursue the past. the combo seems like you need a lot of specific cards for it to work out tho, even with all the draw

they just keep using AI for ads even with the backlash huhand between this and union busting, people still won't boycott this company
>>98103378it really seems to happen to most companies. once big enough they shift from game to collectible in this case
>>98105792Only autistic trannies cry about AI anyway>people still won't boycott this companyAs someone who came to Magic from Warhammer I've found it astonishing that Magic players are such reddit cattle. Warhammer players are addicted to that sweet plastic crack but you'd struggle to find anyone with a positive opinion of GW. Prices increase every year (sometimes more than once a year), contents of a box goes down and down, several armies are literally at $1 per point (with a typical unit being worth ~75pts and 1000pt games being the norm), the fucking errata for rules is locked behind a subscription. There's so much shit GW gets and rightly deservesMeanwhile the same shit is happening in Magic, less packs per box and less rares and mythics in a box, meanwhile the price of a box and all precons has gone up, they're offloading licensing expenses to the consumers with slop-that-shall-not-be-named and yet redditors fucking slurp it up and ask WotC to abuse them harder. I've never seen anything like it
>>98105792Because WotC managed to corner the market on the most clucked playerbase in existence. Any sane playerbase would have boycotted the attosecond the reserved list was announced, but the pigs kept buying. Then they announced mythic rarity, and the pigs kept buying. Then they reduced the packs in a box, and the pigs kept buying. Then they reduced the cards in a pack, and the pigs kept buying. Then they doubled the price of packs, and the pigs kept buying.Nothing will change, because the pigs keep buying.
>>98105998>As someone who came to Magic from Warhammer I've found it astonishing that Magic players are such reddit cattle.I assume it's because they're way more willing to openly cull parts of their game that their most radical supporters find distasteful. GW knows there are aspect of their game that are inherently problematic, but they know even watering those parts down will scare away way more fans than they're willing to part with. WotC are well-aware most of their community are Leftists, so they're willing to do literally anything to rewrite their characters, lore, worlds, etc. so that they're more palatable to their target demographics. Why else would they ban a dozen cards that very few people played just for "racism"?It could also be that a lot of Millennials literally grew up around Magic. While I did know some people that grew up with Warhammer, they usually didn't get into it until their preteen years, meanwhile I know tons of 20/30-year-olds that played Magic as young as age 8. I've also seen kids that can barely speak go into card stores to buy TMNT packs the handful of times I've been to an lgs in 2026.
>>98105998The issue is that Hasbro has correctly played the market. Magic's core players (me) for 15+ years, are still here and still voting with our wallets. I do not buy UB slop. I do not buy sets I don't like (MKM, DFT, OTJ). The problem is that UB slop attracts non-Magic players, lapsed players who only played for a year in 2012, and less discerning core players.Hasbro is in a great position. The few in-universe sets they release, if of sufficient quality, will sponge up my available money. The UB slop, will sponge up money from players who wouldn't have been present for in-universe anyway. The result is Hasbro has a wider revenue base, and I have to share my game, every fucking format, with glup shittos from other properties.UB has fucking colonized us.But this thread is not about that. Here we are free.
>>98106178>>98106282But gentlemen: what is to be done?
>>98106297We do what was done to Star Wars.Mandalorian and Grogu is crashing this weekend at the box office. That is the result of an ecosystem of haters (former fans) birthed by The Last Jedi and has only grown stronger with every failed project. Disney hates us, and we hate them. I relish their failure, I support critical voices, and I pray for their downfall. It's the same with Magic. Normies are coming to the game, and we have a duty to show them how it was before. Stay at you LGS, draft in-universe sets, and TELL THEM you're sitting out UB product. It's important to stay in the conversation, as that is what drives the rot and converts the newcomer normies into cynics. Show them how good it was, and how they're late to the party, and public opinion will turn. Spider-Man and TMNT were great successes for us, (and failures for Hasbro) but The Hobbit will bring another wave this year.Magic is hitting the mainstream, but we have a say in how it hits. We're still early in this fight. Also don't be a huge faggot, being chill but principled is the best method to get people on our side. Nobody likes a cringey moralfag telling them not to like Final Fantasy.

>>98109573>it didn't fucking matterthe pigs sure are hungry I guess. once you wake the fuck up and start pissing about how it ever got this way, it will be too late
>>98109674This game has much more serious problems than WotC using AI to make an ad where you're not supposed to be able to read a card.
>>98062418>TQWanted to like ECL a bit more than I did, the tribal themes and limited environment weren't quite as good as I'd hoped. Still pretty good though and I appreciate all the Changeling support. SOS is excellent, the school mechanics are great designs and I'm having a blast with Opus. Love Prepared as a mechanic too. It's just a shame that the art is pretty shit.
>>98109858I actually thought the changeling support was excessive. They're not a fun tribe, they basically exist to get splashed into other tribes because a particular card doesn't do what the changeling card does. In a limited environment it also relieves pressure on WotC to actually design the set in a way that means each tribe is playable. Cheapens the whole tribal thing and I refuse to run the fuckers unless I'm toying with tribal-tribal where I want to run Maskwood Nexus and Leyline of TransformationI've said this a million times now but what I really wanted from ECL was reprints more than anything. Lorwyn block is 20 fucking years old and many good cards in the set have never been reprinted, pic related being an extremely good one that would fit in well with the blight mechanic
>>98109858are you me? I gotta say I haven't been this excited in a long time for the fractured schools. I'm really hoping some niche support for off-color strategies
>>98109951To be specific, it's less that I'm super invested into Changelings as their own thing and more that I like having glue for tribal strategies that are otherwise a tad tricky. There's a lot of fun stuff to be done with Firdoch Core, for example, and I've had a blast trying to make Standard Slivers work.
>>98110248I love satyr tribal as much as the next guy but I'm of the opinion that if a tribe doesn't work we just have to wait for support rather than play changelings>Standard SliversIsn't there 1 card in Standard that cares about slivers?
>>98110328Exactly! The only card is Thrumming Hivepool so jamming a deck full of Changelings and enablers then plonking down a Hivepool and giving everything haste and double strike plus a replenishing board is great fun. Not good, but hilarious when it works.

>>98114669AI art leads to AI designed cards.
>>98114669Why are you so eager to get shitty AI art anyways and defending it so adamantly? Why are you obssessing over "owning up the commies" when most AI art is fucking generic and trash, specially for a company like WotC that made lots of its profits on the shoulders of the same artists you are talking about.Anons can complain about whatever they damn please and people like you that eat AI shit like it's nothing should just fuck off to whatever new IP that deal solely on AI art and be happy with it, right? If AI art doesn't matter, surely any other company can be highly successful with it?I'd rather have my fresh produce that I've been eating my whole life instead of this canned shit they are now pushing because it can mass produced more easily and cheaper for them.
>>98114669Your analogy is flawed. Having different reasons to why AI sucks is closer to having more fuel to the fire. Sure, it's sticks and not coal or gasoline, but fuel is fuel, and you don't need a special jerry can for sticks. The argument "AI bad because it sux and is a waste of money" is true, and is easier to explain than "AI bad because big money techbros are bribing mayors into going against the wishes of their townsfolk and building massive electricity-eating datacenters with no increase in the regions' power supply, and don't get me started on the water consumption or noise pollution", which is also true.

>>98110328>>98109951Every "good" changeling they print gets us closer to the solved tribal deck: an abomination of "oops all changelings" + random commander that cares about type. You could even add a few of the best lords from different tribes (or slivers even, at this point) since most of your board will benefit from them anyway. It will be the best thing that ever happened to tribal and simultaneously its end
>>98117480It’s always bothered me how tribal artifacts are almost always tribe-neutral because it means that I end up running the same support cards in every tribe, but the part of me that wants to burn it all down would find it very amusing for the game to get to a point where you can build a tribal deck with changelings and just slot in whatever commander you want every game
>>98117492oh yeah definitely, it would be silly and entertaining, for a while. I just fear that it will just accelerate the game's end and some signs are already showing amongst the weakest tribes, as you pointed out
>>98117492>>98117509It's because WotC has homogenized tribal design into "play bodies then play lord". You don't see any real tribal identity anymore because card design has become so generic across sets, largely because they're now pumping out 6 sets a year so they don't have time to test anything more innovative.
>>98117566True, elfball and goblins are barely distinguishable and the more they pump a specific tribe the closer it gets to that model. Slivers are the only ones that will always remain distinctive due to their inherent design, which is ironic for the hivemind clones archetype
>>98117566My faeries deck plays thematically. I also wanted to build that Runo Stromkirk seacreatures deck but then I’d have 2 dimir tribal decks even if they play differentlyI have the Elementals precon and that plays great because Ashling is such a crazy cardMy golgari insect self mill is okay but it’s very low power level so doesnt get played muchBut for the most part I’m already at the point where I can’t see myself making any more tribal decks. I’ve toyed with that slivers commander that’s Leyline of Transformation in the command zone to maybe mash a bunch of tribes together, but it wasn’t fun to put togetherAt this point what I want more than anything is anti-tribal. There’s loads of tribal hate-cards out there and I’d like to run something that gives my opponents creatures the same type and then rewards me for killing them. Just have to wait on WotC to print it and pray it’s in-universe
>>98117645>play Ashling precon unmodified>a single Avenger of Zendikar evoke is enough to overwhelm the tabletruly a nutty deck, barely needs any upgrades besides the landbase (which is ROOF)
>>98117634It's not even like they have no template to go off either. Tribes used to at least try for unique identity. The dragon tribal identity of "play dudes that discount big dudes" is right there but they don't want to go for it anymore because they're afraid of giving Timmy PTSD from Ur-Dragon costing 5 instead of 9.
>>98117480>>98117509What this game needs is to design more like yugioh. Not in terms of power level, but in the sense that they stop cards from being busted in every deck by making them only work with certain archetypes. I don't want everything to be tribal, but there should definitely be cards that are like "activate only if you control an elemental of power 4 or more" or shit like that so tribal is less generic. And it could be good for printing support for specific commanders that can be splashed elsewhere. In that regard I think they did relatively well with TDM and ECL with the "behold" mechanic but the annoying thing about that is always having to have shit in hand rather than playing it.I dont know, let the designers figure it out, but it'd go a long way
>>98117675>besides the landbase (which is ROOF)Absolute slap in the face that elementals precon was a patch job of forests and a bunch of green ramp while the Turtles precon got fucking City of Brass
>>98117885being fair they also threw in a bunch of any-color-but-only-for-elementals/creatures lands
>>98117897I'm talking about value. We discussed it earlier in the thread but WotC know there's money in good lands, its why they keep printing new cycles and then don't reprint the good ones that often.Lands should be fucking dirt cheap. Everyone needs them, they need multiple fucking copies in fact. Good lands should be in every single precon. There shouldn't be a single fucking land worth more than a dollar. But they know if they were to do that then people wouldn't spend money cracking packs of subpar sets looking for surveil lands and verge lands. Absolute scam.
>>98117875>"behold" mechanic but the annoying thing about that is always having to have shit in hand rather than playing it.I don't think you understand how the behold mechanic works
>>98118215>but you can also have one on board!!!!There's a reason I posted a 1 mana creature, anon
>>98118219That's not what you said or even implied
>>98118249What are you gonna do about it?
>>98118253He's gonna buy more warhammer slop
>>98118331Stop trying to create an archenemy in every thread or you'll be no better than the furfag in /edhg/ who calls everyone who disagrees with him "poopdickschizo"
>>98118395We don't want you here.
>>98118395>don't talk about people posting itt>seethe over anons from other threads like meYou have excellent self awareness.
>>98118414>calling out the thing means you're doing the thing!!!!!!So tired of that meme
>>98118476Then stop doing it?
>>98118395Well, fair point.
>>98117951I'd say that although reprints are rare, we're rapidly approaching the points of saturation. SOS adversary lands-lite were already scratching the bottom of the barrel in terms of design space and I think we'll either start seeing more "downgrades but not really" version of staples (a shockland that pings you for 3?) or they'll have no choice but start reprinting good stuff more often. Given that the first option is more profitable, I'm almost sure that's where we're headed. I should get a playset of Blood Moons now because that's not getting s reprint any time soon
>>98118556I don’t think they’ll ever run out pf design space for lands, especially as they constantly add more keywords to the game
>>98118606yeah, but none of the recent keywords interacted with lands except for that "earthbend" bullshit that immediately warped almost every format. Before that, the only meaningful attempt at interacting with lands design was that one "fortify" card that gets posted every other thread. I mean, obviously it is possible to make something new with lands, but I think that it's such a delicate aspect of the game that they can't really go much beyond the "this land enters untapped IF..." and those utility/tribal lands
>>98118739Surveillance lands are literally just tapped lands with surveil. They tried it was scry but it wasn’t powerful enough to be worth anything. They could continue that trend with so many other keywords, blight would be an obvious one. We mentioned behold above, imagine beholding to stop a land coming in tapped. What about lands that goad something on ETB? I could go on
>>98118880There's a pretty simple reason why the surveil lands took off while the scry lands didn't. Just stapling keywords in taplands isn't what makes lands good.
>>98110328In hindsight THB looks really cool both as its own thing and as a follow-up to the Theros block, so why is it remembered as a bit of a mess of a release?
>>98120320was that when they reduced cards in packs?
>>98119024>Just stapling keywords in taplands isn't what makes lands good. And yet surveil lands are like $6 each and scry lands are $0.10
>>98120535There's a very important difference between the surveil and scry lands besides the keyword, and I want you to try to figure out what it is.
>>98117875>annoying thing about that is always having to have shit in hand rather than playing it.It's great because it means the two cards synergize with each otherYou play smol elemental and show off your big elemental, so when you play big elemental you can point at your smol elemental and call it a day. I don't see how else Behold could be done, it's not like you can be required to search your library for a card of X type just to reveal it, else you know people would just run 4x Firdoch Core and call it a dayHaving to reveal cards encourages you to have fully tribal decks rather than gaming the system
>>98120560>durrr they have land types so I can search them!!!!!!!Garbage lands also have land types.
>>98120611Yes, the land types are what make surveil lands good, good job! So proud of you.
>>98120625Imagine acting this smug when the post you're replying to disproves what you're trying to say
>>98120775Land Type+untapped or additional effect (which as of now is only surveils) are what makes a land generically good. It's why surveils are $10+ and scrys aren't.
>>98121378>"WotC is running out of lands, they can't just keep printing tapped keywords!">they can and they will, and their utility will often result in high price tags>"but surveil lands have land types!!!!">so do cycle lands and they're garbage, clearly a good keyword matters moreI am willing to negotiate 85-15 split on this. 85% of the value comes from the keyword and 15% comes from having land types, on tapped lands anyway
>building a deck>going well>usually have a big board state turn 7 or 8>throw in a couple extra creatures>it's fucking unplayable>literally barely have a board by turn 8I have no fucking idea what I did. I didn't cut draw or ramp or anything. I cut fucking targeted removal. I think maybe I need to tighten the mana curve on creatures and have less do-nothing plays but the idea was to have creatures that synergized no matter what, and instead I'm finding that I have the do-nothings all at once
>>98122372>the idea was to have creatures that synergized no matter whatIt's better to have fewer creatures that are very strong in 80% of situations rather than a bunch of creatures that are okay in 100% of situations. Use the other spells to keep yourself in those 80% situations.
>>98122399It's abzan blink and I was finding that in rare instances I wasn't "doing the thing" on curve, so I thought a few more options would mean I'd hit my stride no matter what but it has not worked out that way at allI'm running 32 creatures not including my commanders because things like ramp and removal come on a stick in these colors
If you think things were bad... Now that right wing edgelord exposed the BS in mtg we can expect of WOTC to double down on the gay-UB shithttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8On3aBSahs

I’ll bake new when I’m back from FNM. In the meantime entertain yourselves
>>98122556He’s right about mtg though while we are here. We are all on the same side in this thread to be fair. Magic has gone to serious shit. The old shit was and is better.
