>2026>still the best miniature paints on the market
And the worst container for it.
>>98078447That would be AK. These paints absolutely mog every other paint in my collection, I would swap all of my paints out with AK equivalents in an instant if I could.
>>98078485Post armies painted with those amazing paints
>>98078515No "full armies" I have about five of them and they're all skin tone related, because I was introduced to them in a class about painting skin. So that's mainly what I use them for, however that above rust color is pretty versatile, I've used it on both the carapace on the Plague Drone and the NMM shield on the termie.
>>98078447I thought this was another interpretation of skub for a second there.
>>98078447They're not but they're also not terrible like some people like to believe.Trash pots though
>>98078485These and ProAcryl. I'm slowly replacing all my paints with those two brands. And some cheap AP Fanatics. There's a few Citadel colors that I'll keep using because I just haven't found replacement pigments that I like (mephiston red)
>>98078447Roflmfao, no.The best miniature paint is craft paint.Hobby specific paints are about 20-%30% higher quality, yes. But, hobby specific paints are 3200%-4000% more expensive by volume. So if you are painting to play games they are the clear choice. If you are painting to win painting competitions AND have the skill to actually do so, then the non-citadel paints are the correct choice, but not citadel because at that absurdly high price every wasted drop counts.
>>98078447All angloids deserve to be shot
>>98078557crafty...
>>98078447Are you stupid?Rhetorical question; I know you are.Nobody I know has used Shitadel for decades. And changing the name was just the death-knell on the brand.
>>98078447lmao
>>98078447They aren't the best paint. They aren't bad by any stretch either. They are good paints, however, other paints are also the same level of good now and are cheaper making it kind of dumb to keep buying them unless they have a particular shade that you love and can't get elsewhere.
>>98078559t. Vallejo
>>98079155Nah, Vallejo be like>All our line workers deserve to be shotI still buy their paints though.Because fuck socialists.
>>98079350Vallejo is Spanish, they can hate both syndicalists and the anglo.
>>98079362The feeling the Spanish have for the English, is equivalent to the feeling the English have for the spanish. It is more refined than mere hatred. It is more like a profound sibling rivalry.Who is the heir of Rome?We can only agree, that it is not the French.
>>98078447Honestly they're not bad but>paint pot design + priceVallejo is my favorite out of the actual miniature paint brands, they have such matte finish and opacity (among art brands Golden, Amsterdam, and Turner are my favorite paints).
>>98078447The EU can suck a fat cock for forcing Humbrol to reformulate their Enamel paints. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
>>98078447I think GW is the biggest reason wargamers are so scared of enamel and oil paint
>>98079470Say less, king.
>>98079501Dunno, speedy dry up time is pretty handy when batch painting.
>>98078485How’s the other AK paint labels like their afv, air and figure? Also how are their new acrylic washes?I’m curious about those.>>98078541Pro acryl is good too.My problem is just that their caps are weird. The dropper alternative lids are better.I remember buying a bulk on aliexpress a while back.
>>98078645How are these compared to tamiya’s acrylics? And are these paint pots as easy able to be gummed up like GW paint pots?
>>98078447LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>98078557>painting with fingerpaintsEveryone_was_kneeling_out_of_respect.jpg
>>98078645Alcohol based acrylics suck for brush painting tho
>>98079816>current year>brush painting
>>98079816The Acrysion paints aren't alcohol based, they're proper water-based paints formulated expressly for brush painting. It's the Mr Hobby Aqueous paints that are the alcohol-based ones, confusingly
Vallejo mogs, shut the fuck up.
>>98079855Are vallejo paints still able to produce bubbles too easily that leave bubble marks? Or were those fixed?I use Ak paints. There are some vallejo paints I miss and their metallic colors lines with the shades look very tempting.
>>98079900Do you not thin your paint? Never happened to me.
>>98079987It happened when I thin my paints oddly enough.Bought vallejo paint when the reformulation happened.Had bubbles.Thought it was just me.Kept trying different mixes of thinning to paint using water.Still bubbles.Talk about it online and told I have a skill issue. Then more anons report. Then a reviewer of paints reports it.Then social media users report.I hated being vindicated. But that was a few years ago so I hope the formula was quietly fixed.
>>98078557How much paint are you using per miniature?
>>98078447Abaddon Black is still objectively terrible.
>>98079855Vallejo fucking sucks I dont understand the retards who like them
>>98079470>forcing Humbrol to reformulate their Enamel paintsOh FFS.
>>98080015>he doesn't use actual thinnerpoorfag award
>>98079418While the mini painting community do enjoy gaslighting themselves into thinking matte paints are the best (matte paint is literally graded as the lowest quality paint period by the coatings industry, the guys who make your paints), I personally prefer satin paints cause they’re categorically better according to paint science. To make a paint matte, you have to add a ton of fillers which have the (not) minor side effect of making all matte paints chalkier, less durable, harder to work with, have significantly less colour vibrancy and can’t even display some colours as intended. And cause they have to lower the amount of binder to make room for all the fillers, matte paints separate badly when thinned with water cause there’s not enough binder to hold the paint together (to be honest, even satin mini paint brands are guilty of skimping on binder too, just not to quite the same extent). Anyway, satin paints are smoother, more durable, easier to work with, can fully display vibrant pigments without dulling them down, and are generally better in every way.
>>98079501Enamel/oil and grimdark style looks like shit in real life and don't pop on the table while playing, it's a shitty trend for people who don't know to paint. Washing a model in streaking grime and taking good photos doesn't make you a good painter.I'm tired of seeing the fucking grimdark trend over my club, with shitty low effort painted models that can't be differenciated on the table. Just a giant pile of dirty plastic.
>>98078485I just did a perfect blend with this paint and another brand (Reaper) to create some shadows. It dried fast but reactivated when I blended in the base coat, it was kind of amazing.
>>98080905>Enamel/oil>>98079501It feels weird to paint something then remove paint a little while later. Then repaint, remove until you get it right. At least with acrylic I can put a couple coats on, wash and highlight and I'm done. If I use oils I'm working on it for days maybe weeks. Keep your oils for the canvas.
I mean, they invented it so yeah>um kriegspiel a learning too>but chess/chaturanga completely different beast
>>98079384You are delusional lmao.
>>98079609>>98079816These are new water-based acrylics made explicitly for brush painting>>98079816Which is why the pots literally say "water based" and "for brush" in english
>>98078485Not gonna lie I want to paypiggy a collection of all these paints out of fear that the 4th gen will be a downgrade like Vallejo’s game color reformulation was.Yeah it is paypiggy behavior but I feel it.Anybody else feel this?
>>98080878Satin looks worse, simple as that.
>>98082117Yeah nobody is thinking about it deeper than this, I don't even know who does satins desu
>>98080878Are you painting a wall?I might choose a satin magnolia for my kitchen, but I don't want reflection on non-reflective surfaces, like burlap, or dirt, or wood. And if I want a glossy or not-quite glossy effect in an appropriate area, like on a crystal orb or whatever, I can spot apply it afterwards with varnish.
>>98081691And you are brown, and smell like Jamon. And yet, I do not hate you.I just think I am better than you.
>>98079501I did my time with Airfix when I was younger. Enamels are just an extra layer of faffing around compared to acrylics, can't be arsed with white spirit and all that these days.>inb4 "lazy bastard"Yep and proud of it.
>>98082392Absolutely this. Dealing with nasty enamel paints by Humbrol and Revell as a kid makes me appreciate water based acrylics i have these days even more.
>>98078557I did this for a while. The coverage is shit for a lot of colors, but others work well. Surprisingly good results but since coverage can be hit or miss you might just end up wasting money on A shit color, so the idea of using craft paints to save money is wrong, even if that was my misconception at the time. Instead it could be a way to paint when you don't have easy access to better paints.I do like some Citadel colors and vibrancy/coverage. I feel Citadel is fairly consistent. But I also think that ak makes way better quality (if not more muted) colors and materials while Vallejo gives you a much wider range and selection in better containers. But then again I painted models using craft paint and reaper paints.
>>98080905I remember choosing my color scheme based on realistic camo patterns then taking pictures of my battles and realizing my models always just looked like dark blobs. I then added a bit of bright neutral color and it made the models pop and look amazing since now you could see the details.
>>98082726>Realizing that your camouflage pattern works too wellThat's actually a flex.
>>98082288Ur Indian and Jew owned lmao
As someone just getting into painting what are the colors I should buy if I want things to pop?Like I don't care about realism but i'm not looking for that rainbow pastel stuff. I have fond memories of old Citadel and 2nd-3rd edition warhammer a childhood friend's older brother had and they were painted in bright reds, greens, blues etc.
>>98082943Ah, I was talking to a Jam Boy.Anybody ever tell you, that your entire race smells like shit?
>>98082029Unless you worry about pigment changes you can get good results with craft store paint and cheap acryllic brushes.
>>98082716>The coverage is shit for a lot of colorsEntirely depends on the brand, I tried apple barrel, north shore and folk art, all were shit across the board, then I tried decoart and it's very consistently good, yellow and orange can be trouble but that's true even for miniature paints.Apple barrel and folk art were just poor coverage with everything, but north shore had toothpaste consistency white that didn't want to water down without a paint mixer attachment on a power drill and the black was fucking hydrophobic, beading on plastic like water on a waxed car.
>>98082741It's really not and its actually a very common problem. Often it comes from people making bad choices about basing and using a basing scheme that is too close to the model in hue and/or value leading to the model not looking distinct from its base. Another common cause is using all-over washes and no highlights of any kind, or excessive weathering, particularly with things like streaking grime or badly applied oil washes.Nesrly every death guard army is this and its also a function of how busy the models are and how frequently they're babies first warhammer army.
>>98082117>>98082239>>98082281Post your awesome matt models with AK 3 gen paints.Citadel and P3 are the top of miniature paints for the vast majority of people. Most of you just use matt brands because influencers say so.You are worse than GW paypigs.
>>98082992Buy citadel or P3.Don't even try AK/Vallejo/Pro acryl or army painter. They are utter shit full of white pigment.Don't listen to the internet, they are influencer brainwashed. Citadel has the best line for beginner and intermediate painters, which is and will ever be (thank god) the vast majority of people.Internet is cancer. Unfollow any painting influencer you are following, they are cancer. And most of them don't even paint their minis, they pay for it to some middle eastern Europe studio.
>>98078447t. never tried anything elseLots of great stuff in the GW paint range, but some references are absolutely awful. The containers are also really bad, like... shamefully so. It's almost like it's done on purpose at this point, for them to dry up quicker and to force you to go back to the store. But really... it's just paint. You don't have to be loyal or anything like that, you don't own them shit: try new stuff.
>>98083404Pots are superior to dropper bottles.
>>98080015Did this not happen after they got bought over? I think I remember Vallejo workers actually speaking out and saying that theyr were told to cheapen the recipes, and complaining about the new owners not doing any maintenance on the machines. Supposedly, after the backlash they tightened up and that should have been solved. But since I never tried Vallejo paints I don't know if it had any consequences on the overall quality.
>>98083360Here you have some of mine, almost everything painted with vallejo/ak.>>98083382Shut up citadel shill. Almost every miniature paint in the market right now works well for novices. Citadel paints have nothing special inside of them. Explain me, why are they so good for begginers? Having that small palette that is useless because you have to thin down paints anyway or mix them?>>98082992Don't listen to >>98083382, you can use any brand, they are the same at the end of the day, barring some exceptions. For colors to pop, you need two things, contrast and saturated colors, the first one you'll get it over time, contrast is hard, the second one depends on the paints you use, AK has some colors (the Intense and Color Punch paints) that are quite saturated and pigmented, they work well for that, specially when mixing them.If you are starting, my advice is to not worry about this for now, first learn of to thin you paint, mix them and brush control. Don't worry about "messing something up", the only way to improve is to mess stuff up and learn from your mistakes, the world is not gonna run out of minis or model kts. And don't have brand loyalty, buy what's good and avoid what's bad, the model it's not gonna blow up if you put citadel and vallejo paint together.
>>98083522Why the hell is it flipped. Anyways, for that knifey fella everything is vallejo/ak, except the yellow on the eyes and lamp, that's from Ionic. For the centaur, the same, I only mixed some payne's grey ink for some of the shadows.
>>98083527Everything in the zgok is from AK, with the exception of the grime (I used artist oil paints) and the varnish, I used a Montana Spray.
>>98083531
>>98083360Suck it and see, brand worshipping plebbit cretin.
>>98083522>>98083527>>98083604Nooooo you weren't supposed to post models I wasn't prepared for this!
>>98083522>Explain me, why are they so good for begginers? Not him, and i would advise to use any paint brand, but citadel, but you could argue that the nature of their pots allows to paint with them without the need of a (wet) palette. A total beginner can just open it, and take the paint with the brush out of the pot or from its lid.
>>98084153Yeah, for bad results, and quick paint spoilage.Dropper bottles are for people who don't want to waste their pigments. For one, if you leave one open on the side and tip it over, a dropper bottle won't spill, but the gaping rectum of a "Warhammer Paint" retard pot will shit your paints all over your desk/floor/self, ruining your furniture or clothes, and wasting your paint.Anybody seriously recommending tubs over droppers probably has to wear a crash helmet to go for a walk.
>>98084153Even then, that is worse imo. You have to use a palette to thin your paints, and you always have to thin them, or just to control how much paint you have. The lid thing is just a bad idea
>>98084327Dropper bottles are utter shit.Pots are superior. You waste more paint with dropper. You are all shills reapeating lies. Fuck the internet srsly.Buy EVERYTHING from Citadel and you will be good. Ignore any other brands.
>>98084367I'm impressed that you managed to get your mittens off again to type that out.Your carer should be more vigilant.
>>98083049I only plan to use craft store paint or artist paint for brown dirt basing with the old basecoat and drybrush.Haven’t gone yet. With names like burnt umber or raw umber, unbleached titanium hooker’s green etc. being “commonly used names” what craft store paints using these names could get me a basecoat+drybrush dirt color like the aos steel helm bases?
Is there any meaningful difference between brands? I'm a noob and I've gone straight to Vallejo as that seems to be the default non-citadel option, but I'm just not having a good time with them compared to citadel paints. Chalky finishes and poor adhesion being the main issues but they just generally feel worse in a ways that I can't articulate. Is this a skill issue or is the paint just a bit shit?
>>98085251>this a skill issueits a skill issue.
>>98085251There's some variance in pigment density, viscosity, and drying time between different brands. They're rarely massively different, but different enough to where you'll usually find one suits your workflow better than the rest
>>98085251The default non citadel option became AK paints after the bubble blunder with the game color reformulation after Vallejo got bought out.I’m unsure if this is the case now and the bubbles have been fixed. This lengthy video is shilled a lot.Maybe it really is helpful and deserves to be shilled.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sBDVPoNXyVI&ra=mHope it helps you.I mostly like Ak because of their dropper bottle cap designs. I hope they are bought from a Chinese company so I can buy them and replace other brands with Ak style caps.
>>98080878I don't disagree entirely, you'll note Amsterdam doesn't make matte paints and they aren't Golden's primary offering. Matte paints do have advantages too though, which is why there is acrylic gouche and SoFlat.Matte paints layer differently because they provide more tooth, this matters for glazing and *really* matters for washes. They also photograph much better, and when you varnish, the matte varnish doesn't have to fight as hard to get a matte surface.I also find that brands adding tons of titanium white for opacity instead of being smart about opaque pigments is way, way more guilty of reducing vibrancy than matte finish is.Overthinning your paints is unironically 100% a skill issue.>>98080905>>98081313>>98082392>least buckbroken GW paint enjoyers
>>98085349Vallejo based its new formula on the needs of some cringe youtuber who wears a face mask while painting indoors and alone. Its takes twice as long to dry and is annoying to work with. The old formula and color range was fine.
>>98086645That’s just sad.I’ve heard Ak is who to move to for acrylic paints after Vallejo. What hobby acrylic company is moved to if Ak reformulates and messes things up?
>>98086662Sadly, my LGS does not carry AK, but I only hear good things about the range. They mainly carry citadel (or just Warhammer paint now I guess). I don't mind.
>>98078447I've had a good time with Vallejo, AK, and Pro Acryl paints. One I don't think people have mentioned yet is AMMO's Atom line of paints. They self level really nicely.
>>98086959They are quite good, I painted the eyes and lamp here >>98083522 using their IONIC line. Pots are a bit weird but it's not a deal breaker.
>>98078447Who's got the best contrast/speedpaint/single coat paints?
>>98087896Army Painter
>>98088206>reactivation issues even with their mk2BZZZZZZZZZZZZTTT NO
>>98088210They all reactivate, retard
