Ditching the wooden castle is the most shameful decision the hobby has seen since Netrunner got unplugged.Welcome come to the Board Games General. Filled to the brim with curmudgeons, nitpickers, fussers, hypochondriacs, and grousers for now over a decade!Previous Thread: >>98054187Pastebin:https://pastebin.com/h8Tz2ze8*A BIT STALE* survey results:https://pastebin.com/scAkFdTvTQ:Do you prefer your player pieces fancy or plain? What game has components you feel do not fit its aesthetics / gameplay, but *DO* belong in another box?
>>98086179>Do you prefer your pieces plain or fancyI like heft for stuff like chess. In regards to cards, I like them legible first with artwork being a distant second.Speaking of cards, paper components are a ticking time bomb for any game with a lot of play regardless of the quality of the paper used and having the option to buy a better substitute should exist.>What game has components you feel don't fit it's aesthetics?Scythe. If you looked at it's components and box art, you would assume you are about to play a war game and you will instead be playing a worker placement game where conflict may or may not happen. It's honestly a pretty shit game overall.
What OOP board game do you own that isn't worth money but you personally love? What OOP board game do you own that IS worth money but you don't like much?
>>98086218Scythe is one of the most overrated board games on the planet. If it weren't for the beautiful art it wouldn't be this popular.
Pickomino kind of sucks. Knizia whiffed with this one
>2026>still no 9/11 boardgame
>>98086571Mr. President kind of is
>>98086287Scythe may be overrated, but nothing is more overrated than Root. Without the cutesy art it would literally have sold 5 copies.
Had a good night at the lgs. Played Acquire, Airlines Europe, and ended that group's night with Mushroom Sort before hanging out with another more casual group for a few card games of whatever. It's hard to tell if they liked Mushroom Sort because they're both straight-faced older guys and one seems like he's always on the edge, so he's a bit snippy. Dude really needs a xanax before boardgame night. He also got stomped by a newbie at Acquire which I don't think he was expecting. On that note, Acquire is a pretty cool game.
>>98086571Got to wait for the next Labyrinth expansion for that.
>>98086604Root has art?
>>98086287Wingspan, Root, Splendor, Mage Knight, Gloomhaven, etc.
>>98086236>What OOP board game do you own that isn't worth money but you personally love?War Room. It's tough to get to the table, very long, and really requires the full player count. It's really the best gaming experience still today but not worth the $250+ aftermarket price tag.>What OOP board game do you own that IS worth money but you don't like much?Pax Ren. I think it's way too swingy. I can count on one hand how many times someone actually set themselves up for a victory rather than lucked into one because someone miscounted pips or theology. You do get a ton of replayability for what you spend though.
Now to buy a bag of rectangles from Temu and hope these fit.
>>98086845How can a game that shares its core DNA with Axis & Allies be considered the best gaming experience still?
What are your thoughts on SHUG, /tg/? Saw this game like a year ago and was interested in its weird mix of party mechanics and dungeon crawling aspects, and I’ve been looking for a good party game that still feels like a board game. It’s just so weird I don’t know exactly what to make of it.
>>98086614I forgot to mention that if your cards weren't orientated "correctly" (smallest mushroom facing left), he got snippy and corrected your cards for you. This man apparently has kids too, wonder what they're like.
>>98087101All of these lol so randum "board" games are complete unmitigated trash. I also doubt it handles more than 4 people, which shoves it out of the "party" category.>party game that still feels like a board gameWhat exactly does that mean to you? There's plenty of social deduction board games one could name. Other than that, the space is pretty empty, which is almost by necessity. The more people there are, the less involved a game can be. Challengers is one example I can come up with though.
>>9808725223 Knives?
>>98087101Again, buy an ad
>>98086218>Scythe is a worker placementHoly shit you people are fucking retarded
>>98086179>Do you prefer your player pieces fancy or plain?I like fancy so long as they don't get in the way of playablilty, so less elaborate miniatures but more like the little shinkansen trains in the TtR Japan/Italy expansion.I also like acrylic over cardboard for tokens.
>>98087300>A large part of the game is placing worker pieces on spaces to harvest resources each turn to play other stuff using those resources and removing other player's workers to deny them resourcesThat's worker placement, anon.
>>98087300>Umm akshually people "attack" each other for 1 point a couple time in my efficiency puzzleTry playing real interactive games
>>98087300A game might have one combat the entire game. How is it not worker placement?
>>98084974I'll give you some fun ones to ruminate on>Dominion suit-case guyThis guy would show up at meetups with an old leather suitcase loaded to the gills with every Dominion expansion known to man and nothing else. He had no understanding of scope and would recruit people to play his mish-mash of cards with disjointed rules from 6-7 different expansions. This caused the game to run way longer than any dominion game had any right to. He also would autisticly tell people how to shuffle the cards correctly if he disapproved of their shuffle style. If any poor women ended up in the group he would and try to gaslight them that they'd already met somewhere before and then follow them around for the rest of the night trying to get their number
>>98087300>>98088234>>98088087>>98087974I can only imagine this is making fun of jamey on a very high level, deliberately ignoring objective reality like he tends to do in blog entries
>>98084974>Bearded tranny manThis person started coming to a long time meetup that I personally enjoyed. He/she was an overweight balding man with a prominent neckbeard that frequently wore dresses that didn't fit and insisted they were named "Kendra". This person also had terrible analysis paralysis in even the simplest of games. I'm talking 5 minutes to take an action in CuBirds. I usually avoided this person outside of large group games, but on occasion they would try to enter a game as the 4th and inevitably someone would tell them to sit down. Now, my approach to AP is to taunt the person into action after it's clear the table is growing impatient, and usually people take it as a joke and grow from it, so on this particular occasion I said things like "It's your turn Ken" or "what are you doing Ken". Eventually this caused the wires to cross inside this individual and they broke down in tears. This halted the play in the whole room. I decided to leave as the vibes were unbearable, and I would rather them galvanize against me than finish a four hour game of fucking Wyrmspan.
>>98088518Nobody cares about your efficiency puzzle wearing a doam skinsuit to lure in clueless gamers
>>98088587I don't think you understood what I meant anonScythe is a wp
>The Balancing ActThis person would take it on themselves to decide how well the a game balanced according to their board state in nearly every game they played. Often less than a quarter of a way through the game they were making sweeping judgements on the power level of a card or action. This got to the point where other players would jokingly repeat their catch-phrase "Oh, you just win" in other games after the resolution of card or a particularly good turn, but they never seemed to get the joke and often agreed. This grew to a head one night in a long play-through of the Game of Thrones board game, fueled by alcohol, in which they decided the Iron Islands was an impossible position to play from and reminded the table every 5 minutes as they grew continually drunker, causing a huge argument that fractured the game group for many months after.
So I got pic related as a quick and varied fun game, admittedly bout it on a whim with only vague knowledge of the rules (which, to be fair turned out to be like 80% of the game). Now my first impression is that it seems like utter trash, covered in stylized retrofuturism(?) art and quirky theme. I'll withhold my opinion and post tomorrow night how it went.
>The AstrologistThis person was a a frequent attender of many open game nights for the span of 4-5 months. She was a girl with a slender build and hair styled into the least fashionable way one could possibly wear their hair. They best way I can describe it is bleached tip mullet that descended into several rat-tails in the back. I respected the moxy it takes to commit to this sort of look, but much of that respect was lost on interactions with this girl. She was an energy vampire of sorts that seemed to drive every conversation to that of astrology. Inevitably, during a game, she would attempt to pry the birth month and year out of participants. Once plied with that information, any game action taken after would be explained in such a way only a devout follower of the stars could describe. Oh you opted to top deck a card instead of take from the market? You know Sagittarius' are very optimistic and love to take risks. Her game selections also seemed to follow the occult, but her favorite game was Munchkin and once a game wrapped people were usually fleeing the scene, but if you didn't stay for a game of Munchkin she got very upset. On more than on occasion I would witness her scanning the room for some sort of authority figure in which she could complain to that no one would play Munchkin with her, completely oblivious to why that was. I did think she had some redeeming qualities though. At my local LGS she frequently purchased games, and I could tell she loved something about the hobby but she stopped showing up after a time, maybe the stars took her to another place entirely...
>>98088843>>98088622>>98088562>>98088479I read all of that in the voice of BGBs Mark. Probably the biblios pics (based, btw). I am now also 80% convinced it's actually him.
>>98088843astrology weirdos can be a lot of fun to talk to if you just get into the spirit of the thing and treat it like a game/improv comedyI think it is often an indication of weak action-principle; something about their mind has difficulty processing cause and effect relationships so they look for quasi-magical causalities or something.
>>98088954Astrology is unironically legit, but it's really complicated and there are too many hacks out there that don't know enough about it but think they know everything there is to know.

Soon in my country three Kinfire Delve games (Scorn's Stockade, Callous' Lab, Vainglory's Grotto) going to be localized. First time hear about them, should I be excited?
>>98088954>something about their mind has difficulty processing cause and effect relationships so they look for quasi-magical causalities or somethingHmm, this sounds eerily similar to how another group of people operates.

>>98090689When you collectively build up an ecosystem but competitively fuck it up.Im thinking Evolution Climate, John Company, Antiquity, Pax Ren. I dont think its a mechanism so much as a philosophy of both player and systems intersections and interaction.

>>98091509Kinda similar experience here. After backing like 2 games in years or so, I've backed 3 games in the last 10 months. I cope by telling myself RotLA won't really be around in retail, but Idk what I was thinking with stellar ventures and especially the new terrorscape. I likely could get them for 10-20% less 1-2 months after release. As you said, I am becoming what I hate.
>>98091509I've never backed a kickstarter for anything desu.

>>98091658>Wait. You mean I spend 80% of the game just doing arithmetic around shipping? I think I'd rather play something else.>HA HA BROKE HIM!Splotter fags still top insufferable fanbase.
What's the appeal of Terra Mystica? I don't really get what the theme is supposed to be but it seems highly rated.
>>98091658this is the second time I've heard of splotter games causing rage quits, the first being with antiquity. What is it about those games that makes them so rage inducing?
>>98091822Not at all why he got huffy but you keep beating that drum.
>>98091849Splotters play out way to slow for my tastes. Having a slow ass game to build an engine and someone slightly fucks with it can piss you off. It's like building a model of the statue of liberty out of toothpicks and someone takes the fire out of her torch. Yeah, it's still there, but I just spent a lot of time building that bitch and you fucked with it, so I kind of want to kick you the dick so hard your nuts slap the back of your eyeballs.Note, I don't personally get mad at games, just saying that I understand.
>>98091933>engine building >in Zimbabwe, Bus or Indonesia
>>98091509I back very sparinglyLike unless its AR (and it's interesting) or its a second print (like Old Kings Crown, GoAII) I just dont back. It's usually cheaper used anyways.
Went for the 2nd time to the flgs for a game night. Ended up playing Horrified D&D, Las Vegas, and Clank. The older guy I played with had an old printing of Las Vegas, classic art and design. Had a blast, and enjoyed them all. Also, hadn't played Clank before and it was pretty cool. Not something I'd buy but good fun.
>>98091849You get raped if you don't know how to play and you can fall into traps early in the game. Also the game doesn't sugarcoat or hide you're getting raped
>>98091822Yeah there must be something to the game I'm not seeing, maybe a certain "lets do this merger and see wh- oh what the fuck is that boardstate now" or something. But just having looked into it, it seemed like a way too high logistic calculation:actual game ratio

>>98086604I enjoyed Root, Scythe I played once and thought. "The theme is cool but damn this game is boring."
>>98093096>it seemed like a way too high logistic calculation:actual game ratioIt is this. I'm not a splotter hater, I like FCM and tolerate Bus, but Indonesia is not a good game. It makes the AP associated in a game like Power Grid (where everyone tries to calculate every auction, everyone tries to calculate every house placement, everyone tries to calculate buying resources) and takes it up to max calculator mode then requires you to pretty much do it all over after your opponent takes a turn.I'll never understand the shilling of Indonesia or Aegean Sea on here.
>>98093253I second BusPan Am is a lot of fun, cheap, and thematic/cool presentation too>>98093459for my money, i wish i didn't buy 3 sets of it. but if i was younger, drank, and maybe was trying to get others into roleplaying for a tabletop game or something....then maybe it would have a place. i'd recommend trying it on TTS....you can try out every character.

A question I cant recall ever seeing on here:We all have our fave designers and publisher, but who are the producers or developpers you admire? As much as Ive only like a fraction of his self designed games, and his actual business decisions are hilarious trash, damn does Brad Talton jr. have an eye out for fun designs by others.Nick Conley at Plaid Hat has done great work with Ashes and Summoner Wars, taking over from the original designers and being instrumental in the resurrection of both games.
>>98093962I got respect for PHG. Colby Dauch basically said, "Fuck it. I'll do it myself" and started PHG after nobody would buy Summoner Wars. Then he sold to Asmodee who started running PHG stuff into the dirt because Asmodee is a death sentence to anyone they buy, so Dauch bought PHG back from Asmodee so he could grow his games again. While he never said so, I'm pretty sure his 2e stuff was made just to remove backwards compatibility so that Asmodee wouldn't be able to profit from selling older stock for newer releases.
>>98093962The publisher and the designer are on the box. You have to read the small print credits to see the developer. Next you'll ask us who our favorite playtesters are.

>>98094118like, for example, in a list like this:https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/299045/introducing-the-og-old-school-german-style-hall-ofto me the rest of these games are still bangers that i'd play today, whereas Catan kind of sticks out like if Monopoly was on the list
>>98094118I think it's fine at the start but later you start noticing its flaws. For me it was how you essentially need to gaslight the entire table to win and how easily it can sour the mood
