This thread is for open OSR discussions. Including TSR-era D&D games, their retroclones, and broader category of OSR-adjacent games. There is a general for OSR gaming strictly inspired by pre-1983 D&D that can be found here >>98074270Please don't engage with and report trollingThread Question that is more of my personal question>how do you soloplay pre-written [non-solo] adventures without ruining the surprise?
>>98092835>Rattle 'em, boys!
>>980931781-2 out of 6ba dum tss
>>98092835>how do you soloplay pre-written [non-solo] adventures without ruining the surprise?Gonna voice my own thoughtsI'm planning to try solo'ing bfrpg adventures and those have source files available, so I can try making the font of some text invisible, so I can come up with an action plan first, and then select the text to read it
>>98092835>how do you soloplay pre-written [non-solo] adventures without ruining the surprise? You don't. You can add some raondomizers or other oracle related things but its going to necessarily require you to read the module to run it, as you generally would if you were DMing the module for anyone else. You could try just reading it room by room as you explore but you'd end up with a poor understanding of how to handle factions and any other interconnected details between rooms.
>>98094167>handle factionsa lot of adventures have a section on factions in the beginning, I honestly not as concerned about factions as simple traps/secrets/ambushes
>>98094540Sure that would also not work. You could default to just X:6 rolls to trigger and notice but it removes a lot of the interesting part of traps and relies on the traps being just resource drain more akin to a board game. Some people seem to like that mode of play, not my thing.
>>98094777>not my thingunderstandablebut there are many cool adventures I want to try and gathering a table to play each one of them is probably unrealistic for me
Does anyone know where this is from?I remember it being from some beginner's guide to OSR, but I can't for the life of me remember which one.
>>98095877Pretty sure it's Matt Finch's.Also, there's no sign of the trolls in sight...Are they gone? Is it too late to celebrate? Can we finally revert the OP of /osrg/ and go home?
>>98096049>this definitely isn't a spergoid troll thread only created to derail /osrg/ however
>>98093867>>how do you soloplay>Gonna voice my own thoughtsYep, that's pretty much you do it.
>>98096644*how you do it.Do excuse my ESLness.
>>98096049> Can we finally revert the OP of /osrg/eat shit, troll nogames
>>98092835Post your favorite OSR art, I really like ACKS.
>>98093867Anon, you're lost.As you can see from >>98096049, this is a troll thread created by a nogames retard (fishfag) for the sole purpose of taking over the real /osrg/, where people who actually play congregate. The current /osrg/ thread is here: >>98074270 If you ask you question there, we'll be happy to answer. In fact, there's already a discussion about that very topic you're asking about going on here.
>>98096644kekedt. sameanon
>>98096049damn it was fun while it lasted and they were gone.
>>98095877it's from Old School Principia-Apocryphawhat is the nature of the question? apart from the pic being relevant to the troll situationI mean if you have a piece of text you can google it and find out the source
>>98097809I just remembered that it was a decent guide for new folk and wanted to take a second look at it to see where it could be improved upon. I think it's a little vague and could use some more actionable advice.>I mean if you have a piece of text you can google it and find out the sourceWell, now I feel dumb.
>>98092835>>how do you soloplay pre-written [non-solo] adventures without ruining the surprise?...you can't?
>>98092835>how do you soloplay pre-written [non-solo] adventures without ruining the surprise? You can't unless you add randomizers. In case of traps or deceitful encounters, a saving throw might be necessary to determine if a member of the party triggers it, which preserves the danger even if the surprise is gone.
>>98096049>Can we finally revert the OP of /osrg/ and go homeEat shit, fishfag. You don't even have a single character sheet to show as evidence that you have ever played D&D once in your life.
>>98098868>add randomizersI found some solo let's-plays specifically running pre-written adventures and that seems to be a popular way to do it.>did your characters think about interacting with that mystic fountain?roll/ask oracle>did your characters try searching for secret doors here?roll/ask oracle>did your characters tried searching for traps?roll/ask oracleit seems like there is a danger the game will transform into serious of casino-procedures that play itself, but I'm still wanting to give it a tryIt's much less work than my original idea of going through the adventure several weeks in advance to censor out things for future you.
>>98099657I think that being sensible and logical about it is the best bet, as finding traps even in group play tends to depend on both player skills and good rolls. If your minions are consistently looting rooms without too many precautions and getting loot out of it, you might want to assume that the trap is triggered and proceed with the normal saving throw. Otherwhise, having a short profile of each adventurer and rolling for those most prone to do it (say, the thief, the wizard, the foolhardy fighter, etc) is also sensible. In general, like everything involving solo play, you have to be honest with yourself.
>>98099584I post where I want, when I want, Junior-Janny
How TF do you run a solo adventure without at least partially metagaming rhe map?
>>98100565rolling the dice
>>98100565Put rubber bands on your arm so your hand falls asleep so when you roll your dice it feels like someone else is doing it.
>>98100565>How TF do you run a solo adventure without at least partially metagaming rhe map?Anon, you're probably lost. The reason you are getting retarded asshole joke replies such as>>98100579>>98100767is that you are in a nevergames circlejerk troll thread. These Anons know nothing and they're not here to help.Try asking on the real /osrg/ general, where Anons who actually play post: >>98074270You'll certainly get real replies. In fact, there's already an ongoing discussion about how to play solo there.
>>98100767No i mean you have yo look at the map to draw it, how can you not metagame it?
I love Shadowdark, OSE and dolmenwood. Are there any other OSRS worth playing?
>>98102658Retroclone wise? BFRPG, OSRIC, Labrynth Lord, For Gold & Glory & adventures dark and deep.
>>98102652there are adventures that provide player facing maps
>>98102652You don't. Some people might be able to compartmentalize really well and have a >player knowledge >character knowledge divide to keep em separated. Solo gaming is at a notable disadvantage if exploration of a formed and functional dungeon is a thing you're shooting for. There are a few procedural generation methods but they tend to feel half baked compared to a dungeon I've made, edited and tied together for other people to explore. Some people have run Appendix A as the generator, Ruins of the Undercity is interesting if you're in a pinch. The dungeon generation in Scarlet Heroes is only alright.
>>98102672FG&G is shit T B H, don't rec it to a poor unsuspecting newbie
>>98102658You'll probably like Beyond the Wall if those are your initial picks. Does a group village generation and intro adventure. Honestly a lot more appealing than the Disneywood stuff although it would be easy enough to port between them. If you haven't seen the earlier Wormskin zines they're quite interesting. At least reading through the old B/X for the contrast to OSE is worth your time. After that the AD&D dmg and homebrewing to get it right is the way. LotFP is interesting as a skills and encumbrance model.
>>98103340>For Gold & GloryOn one hand, it's fine. If you washed up onshore to a deserted island with only it, you'd be able to survive (or at least run some passable games). On the other hand, it's almost a consistent downgrade over the original, and in terms of style and presentation it's a HUGE downgrade.
>>98103393What does more of B/X[-clones] or AD&D offer to a dude who is already playing OSE?I mean there is the historical curiosity, but gamewise there isn't much to be gained
>>98105359Anon, it sounds like you're lost:>already playingYou're asking questions about actual play in a circlerjerk thread created by nevergame trolls, you're very unlikely to get any useful answers about gameplay here.If you ask on /osrg/, the real OSR general, we'll be happy to help >>98074270
>>98105836No. It looks gay.
>>98105359If you're having fun with OSE, you're in a good spot. You can read through the OSE designers notes about what he changed and see if anything strikes you as something you'd disagree with, but overall he did his best to be largely faithful and just clean things up a bit and add some clarification for rules that weren't quite as clear as they should be.
>>98105359An actual rule book instead of a reference document. If you can't figure out the difference with that you're a lost cause.
>>98107933oh-oh! sounds like someone is having a bit of a maldy because he doesn't have any arguments!OSE rulebooks are actual rulebooksthe fact they are written in a different style doesn't make them not-rulebooksand even would the OSE books just be a bunch of reference docs, anon is already playing the gamehe doesn't need anything but the reference docsI stand corrected, recommending more B/X retroclones or B/X itself, or AD&D (assuming anon is already playing advanced fantasy so he can play all AD&D content) to an OSE player is simply retarded
>>98108760>doesn't get it that hard lol >still gets it wrong at the end lmao even
