How would you go about finding a game group online and having a decent (or maybe even good ) time playing a ttrpg online, in the unholy year of our demise 2026?

I know it's a big ask and a long shot, but I wanna play a ttrpg at least once before I die, and finding anything in the IRL is simply impossible due to my circumstances.

Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You talk to your friends in real life and then you set up an online group.
If you can’t make friends in real life you won’t have them online either.

Also fuck off. This isn’t a self-help forum for pathetic autists. The next time you feel like bringing this crap here, kill yourself instead and make everyone else’s life better

Kinda both? I saw a thread for a new group, joined the group, the group didn't pan out so I salvaged the players + their friends for another group that I dmed.

I met my online group of 3 years at /a/.

Treat it like a job interview for recruiting and interview the people that want to join. Try showing up early and/or staying late to hang out, if you like hanging out with someone online, add them to your friends list, and if the group dies, try making a new one with the people you like spending time with. It's not going to instantly solve anything, but you'll gradually get a group of people that you enjoy spending time with

There is a game finder thread

Is Tabletop simulator a good start?

I wish I still had my online group of 10 years but things just went sour.
Maybe we just grew incompatible.

Don't start a group specifically for TTRPGs. You'll be playing with online randos and playing with online randos is a roulette wheel of shit. Make some friends first, and then play games with them.

Decent online group take care to avoid people like you.

Despite what /tg/ may say, using a paid GM is a viable option. I'm approaching one year in my current game with a paid DM without issues.
Apparently when money is involved, players are more strict about making time.

While I generally agree, keeping all the undesirable players having to pay to play keeps them away from my group.
Trying to force the idea that you have to pay to play is inherently evil.

You have to RUN the game. If you aren't willing to do that, don't bother reading any further:

1. If you have existing friends, even if they are scattered around the world, you can try organizing them. Get a weekly digital hangout going, maybe to play vidya or watch a movie together. Then aggressively pitch a one-shot that is thematically tied to whatever movie or vidya the group is enjoying. Some of the group may develop (or already have) a fondness for roleplaying, and that is your starting point.

2. If you need to start from scratch, I recommend (from personal experience) pitching one-shots or short games to randos online. RPG forums and threads are ideal, but some people have recruited on /m/ (for a mecha game) and /v/ (for a Star Wars/X-Wing game). If you do it on /tg/, don't just use the gamefinder, also post in the general for the relevant genre or system.

I have one group of old high-school buddies that were assembled (not by me) using method #1, and two groups (one I formed, one I was invited to) of people I met through running games for people in the Mecha Monday threads.

If you just want to play a TTRPG, hop on StartPlaying and find a session/start time that fits you, put your money down and play. If you can wait a little longer, do the same thing on Roll20 and you will be able to chance your way into a free game of DnD. It's easy to play DnD online. CoC and Pathfinder are also surprisingly easy to find people running oneshots online.

Disregard anything the hen-pecked, oversocialised 40 something losers who've wasted their entire lives on 4chan and would blow their heads off if their highschool "friendgroups" cancelled them for liking problematic media. Your friends aren't necessarily the people you can have fun playing a game with for more than a one-off novelty session. The best way to find people to play with is to meet people who share your interests and then pitch them a game that revolves around that. You will probably have to run it yourself.
If you don't want to do that, or your interests include generic fantasy, go back to step one and use StartPlaying or Roll20 to play some Dungeons and Dragons.
Otherwise just put yourself out there on your favourite forums until you meet people you click with. Sometimes it just takes posting a single image or vague description of a game you would like to play to get people interested.

I don't really consider myself a TTRPG fan, I'm someone who plays TTRPGs because they let me explore my other interests and favourite genres.

High volume trial and error.
Participate in a bunch of games, even if you drop them all, you'll at least have met a couple of cool dudes you can invite privately and start your own group.
It of course helps immensely if you are willing to run the games at first.

With impossible luck.
All my online groups were found through /tg/ and discord and all were great, but I'm probably an exception.

NTA, but the reason why I went for online groups is that NONE of my real life friends do like trpgs; I always have friends to go watch a movie together, go outside with, or even play boardgames, but I have 0 people interested or willing to play rpgs longterm. Not even a one-shot...

Are you in school? Try seeing if there’s some sorta D&D club. If you live in an area with more than 1,000 people there’s probably atleast one game store with a D&D group you might be able to join. If you have geeky friends, I’d honestly recommend trying to wrangle some of there asses to the table. Trying to meet people online is kinda rolling a dice. Lots of deplorable fucking canoes and stinky troons in the ttrpg world now. Honestly if you just want to play 5e you probably won’t have that hard of a time.
