The models design philosophy is gear towards competition, influencer and professional painting. The average person isn't going to spend all that time painting one model let alone a squad. I would be more forgiving of this was for centerpieces or generals but no this issue of over designed and over detailed models extends to chaff models like zombies in AOS. People like these design when seeing demo art or watching their favorite YouTuber paint but they usually show you how to paint one model not batch paint a whole unit. Most 3d printed minis suck also. They are too busy, don't look good in big numbers as an army. Less is more.5-6ed WHFB and 3-4ed 40k was peak miniature design and will never, EVER be improved.Thing is, the more elements your piece has (piece of art), the better you have to be at finding a pleasing composition. And composition is fucking hard. Like, really, insanely hard.So whether it is sculpture, a painting or anything else... putting things in the right place is tough. And the more details you put on something the harder it becomes. Many of the modern miniatures are a literal mess. A mess of details.Without any sort of direction. There's basically no composition. It's like Homer's make-up-gun. For those who remember this episode of the Simpsons, Homer "invents" a shotgun that shoots make-up on a face. Most modern miniatures are like that. Someone took a miniature and then just aimed a "detail-gun" at them and blasted them with stuff. If you don't agree you are trans.
>>98133326There are more than enough companies band digital sculptors still doing designs inspired by the olden days. If all you look at is GW and their weekly new releases, its your problem.
>>98133360You know, miniatures are used to play those traditional games.
>>98133362You mean buildable funko pops bought by consoomers who don't play the games. Those same games also have worldbuilding that justifies and gives themes to the game, but as we know, worldbuilding isn't traditional games
>>98133383>bought by consoomers who don't play the gamesSo, who plays the games? People like you who do not own miniatures?
>>98133383You just say that to bait us, but FunkoPops are /tg/. Everything that has a game or boardgame can be /tg/!
>>98133439Everything can be a game.
>>98133326>Less is moreI'm getting really tired of this reddit take>>98133360That's what Warhammer is, yeah. /tg/ would be much better if it was mini discussion rather than lorefagging
>>98133469He has a point with details for details sake on some modern miniatures.
>>98133326I need to see your painted models before I can make a judgement
>>98133469NTA but I've been in the hobby since 2001. Everything got way more cluttered. And I don't mean only GW. Same goes for Infinity (dropped it mid 2nd ed), Malifaux (dropped it at the end of 2nd ed, and already plastic kits had a lot of detail then) and Warmachine&Hordes (I still play 1st ed, did you see the current models?)
>>98133326I'm sorry painting is too hard for you. Wanting everyone to have basic, simple models like when you were young and less cynical is very selfish though.
>>98133326>5-6ed WHFB and 3-4ed 40k was peak miniature design and will never, EVER be improved5-6ed whfb miniatures were so notoriously shit compared to even what came before they arguably helped cause the demise of Fantasy.
>>98133439All I see is Warhammer
I like having a lot of detail but I also like having a lot of simpler surfacesHaving a lot of detail doesn't make you a good sculptor nor does avoiding a lot of detailI personally have a preference for painting very detailed miniatures because it's easier
>>98133537Most of the modern GW shills don't even paint their armies wtf are you talking about LMAO.They buy a box, paint 1-3 models following a shitty influencer tutorial and then buy the next box. Rinse and repeat.Consoom, cuck.
>>98133542Fuck off, trannie.
>>98133537The thing he is not realizing is, everyone (who wants it) can have those old models if they feel nostalgic for them. Northstar, Fireforge, Mantic (to a degree) and WGA still make less cluttered plastic miniatures in the charming GW style of the mid-90s/early 2000s.And with 3d printing being super available these days, nobody can stop OP from either printing stuff by people sculpting in the style he loves, or by simply getting scans of old GW miniatures, and printing those.
>>98133556Looks like shit Though to be fair, that might have more to do with being dark elves.
>>98133545That would be a very limited game!
>>98133326yeah I hate basic miniatures that are covered in guff. They just hold you hostage as you paint them. I painted some goblin spider riders recently and they were covered with bones, pouches, feathers, knives, their shields already had elaborate cobweb patterns on them. None of it does anything for the model and is a chore to paint. What matters was getting the goblins skin right and getting the spiders right. If you fucked either of those the mini would be fucked, no matter how much effort you put into painting the guff.
>>98133806Warcraft detroyed the aesthetic of fantasy forever.
>>98134102Spider riders were designed before warcraft even came out zoomer
Eh, miniature wargaming is a really niche hobby. There just aren't that many sculptors that understand human anatomy, movement and what makes a good wargaming mini. Then there's the issue with design, sculptors move on and new ones take their place with their own preferences. When the Perry twins left GW to focus on historical minis you can see how armor designs kept getting worse and worse since the other sculptors and new ones weren't interested in historical armor. I personally dislike the AoS cities of sigmar freeguild whatever they're called since none of it looks real. It's just big pauldrons and other unwieldy armor pieces that tell you this wouldn't work in real life. An Empire knight or state trooper looks human and has functional armor, grounding the setting even though it has beastmen and Orcs.Just my two cents.
>>98134175Most new sculptors and designers are trans, cucks and women.
>>98134175>An Empire knight or state trooper looks humanThey don't though, they look like monkey-men
>>98134225Thats why you buy miniatures from people that aren't, and whose sculpts you like.
>>98134175>It's just big pauldrons and other unwieldy armor pieces that tell you this wouldn't work in real lifeI immediately thought of pic related
>>98134175We have now reached the point in the old good new bad cycle where fakegrogs are going to bat for 7th edition empire state troops man. I can't wait for 2036 where people will be complaining the new 8th edition AoS Freeguild Spyrměn™ are a downgrade compared to the 5th edition ones.
>>98134233Well yes but that's just GW sculpting.>>98134395I'm talking about the older ones you idiot.
>>98135198>Well yes but that's just GW sculpting. That was Perry sculpting tho
>>98135221The Perry state troopers do not look like monkeys. Worst you could say about them is that they have potato noses.
>>98135221>>98135256The Perry heroic scale worked.
>>98133326Every time someone mentions old sculpts my mind automatically goes to juan diaz's daemonettes. Those were perfect and I remember seeing the newer models and being unreasonably angry and I didn't even collect chaos. I hate the new approach to chaos to make it nuanced and multi faceted characters. They should have embraced the six rows of tits approach
>>98134395Perry didn't sculpt the 7th ed state troops, worthless fraud hypocrite. Running around the board yapping fakegrog fakegrog and you are one yourself. Many such cases.
>>98136302You are conflating multiple people in this reply
>>98133326I get your frustration. Some models like some of the gw character sculpts like nagash and the void dragon seem made to be fragile display pieces rather than robust board game pieces.A good number of are of sigmar larger character models seem to have bits meant to break off so a replacement is bought. And many don’t look very structurally sound as a board game piece should be. They look too fragile like they are trying to make it fragile despite it being hard plastic.Eidolon (pic related) is a great example of my problems with modern gw sculpts. In the past minis were mostly intended to be robust board game pieces with extra detail to be painted. Some failed at it like the old abbadon model where his arms kept falling off that became a meme. The problem is that now the tech exists to create a balance between nice looking sculpts and robust game pieces and instead most gravitated to making detailed minis as detailed as possible to a stupid degree. This is most noticeable in stl makers.I’m not looking to push my 3d printer’s detail capabilities to the limits here.Less truly is more and there is a genuine kind of artistry of making detailed models without making them a tiresome bother to paint. If it gives you any hope, OP. Wargame Atlantic is acknowledging this issue and made a humble bragging article about teasing future models:https://wargamesatlantic.com/blogs/news/big-changes-at-our-sculpting-studioHopefully other studios follow through with keeping things simple.
>>98134395Are the fake grogs in the room with us right now? Let me guess, we’ll never be women?
>>98137506I think it depends on the sculptor or the faction. The new tyranid models are more detailed than the old tyranid models, but they're also closer to the detail of official GW concept art from 4th edition. Compare the recent lictor re-sculpt with this concept art from 2005.The problem with busy models is a new model line problem or a new sculptor problem,
>>98138446
>>98138446Doesn't every mini or boxset have several sculptors?
>>98138446>>98138453Stop, anon, they do not want to hear that their sweeping generalizations are almost always wrongheaded.>>98138470Depends on the company and the assignments. You in fact will never know when it comes to GW because faggots like OP complaining about models are the same as the ones that sent Matt Ward death threats for having his name on a codex.
>>98137506The eidolon is pvre kino thoughbeit
>>98138501>You in fact will never know when it comes to GWThat's not true either. Many of the new Tyranids were done by Filip Haking. He won a bunch of golden demons before GW hired him and there's interviews with him and the other sculptor about the new kits. His last instagram post is talking about sculpting the new Red Terror. Hardly a secret.I think the Matt Ward/Robin Cruddace affairs only resulted in rules writers being concealed from the community.
>>98138540I had a look through his instagram and sure enough he's worked on some of the best recent kits. I'm a huge fan of the new victrix honour guard (and I hadn't seen the classic art they're based on) so it's really cool he worked on those, the red terror and more. Unfortunately I totally understand why GW don't make it widely public, because while some designs are excellent, others are badly received and people these days are so much crazier they would make the death threats directed at Ward look tame in comparison.
>>98133553Classic making up some dudes and getting mad about them. Piles of shame have existed since GW began.
>>98138593>totally understand why GW don't make it widely public,They don't have to. For the majority of their customers, it simply does not matter. And everyone who is a bit more interested in sculpting, or even invested in the miniature business somehow, just knows who is sculpting what and for whom. The number of professional and good miniature sculptors is quite limited and the same names appear here and there all the time.
>>98138397You will never be a woman.
Most people who prefer modern model are just consoomer greytiders. And trans.>MUH NEW SCULPTS LOOK SOO GOODSTFU you are just gonna buy the box and never paint them wtf.
Very telling lack of people posting their own models in this thread
>>98139060These are mine - 3D printed grave guard for the old world.
>>98139060Snip of my Dawi army
>>98137506I look at my Genestealer cult units and even going for a basic bitch scheme and mostly using cumtrast like paints.I still end annoyed after painting 5 models. Let alone the 20 for squad. This is not the case for stuff like the old metal storm trooper. Same kind of guy dude with rifle. The detail is there but I can get away with a simple paint scheme because the details are optional and not molded into the model
>>98139060The question is, where are yours?
>>98139506Is that for fucking warmaster or is the angle messing with me?
>>98139687Its a printed beastman army for warmaster
>>98139807On the one hand I kneel because of warmasterOn the other hand you gotta admit that it's pretty funny out of 3 people posting minis it's all 3d printed stuff instead of 30 year old perrt sculpts or whatever
>>98139876I never claimed only the old stuff is gold. Some is charming, some is horrible but i still feel nostalgic towards it because i was a kid when i had some of these, or never had them because only little pocket money, and some of the old stuff is simply bad. But to repeat myself: There are good modern sculpts too, its just the majority that isnt and its too easy with digital sculpting to add too many details. Take pic related, 28mm this time: sculpted in 2024 or 25, and i still think these look great. (they are printed too btw)Same with most stuff Northstar or Wargames Atlantic releases in plastic these days.People just need to open their eyes, and while doing so, avoiding all the bad (digital and physical) stuff out there.. because that exists for sure.
>>98138828>They don't have to. For the majority of their customers, it simply does not matter.NTA but GW did used to put the name of the sculptor(s) fairly prominently back in the day, can't remember if the boxes had it printed on but I definitely remember seeing it alongside each kit on the reveal/pre-order announcements in White Dwarf. So at some point somebody made a conscious decision to stop publicising who sculpted what for some reason.
>>98140037>>98139876And i agree, its kinda funny that only prints were posted, but it also underlines the point that just because something was sculpted digitally, it has to be soulless slop.Lastly here are some 2025/26 Wargame Atlantic Damned, which i think are excellent with very sharp and just the right amount of detail. In my opinion, crying about bad modern sculpts is mostly a waste of time. Time i rather invest in painting stuff i like.
This board is so fucking small when I recognize all the model posters.
>>98141229Or you might spend too much time here.
>>98141229It really is. I still blame that downtime last year.>>98141253And this is true as well, but i had an afternoon off and my usual routine is to paint and simultaniously lurk/post here.
>>98133553> Paint one to three modelsThat's an exaggeration. They don't paint any of them
>>98133556Post your own models not someone else's you fag
>>98137506> Le fragile! Ready to break off!!Peak no games and an easy way to immediately recognize if a person don't own, build, paint, or play. Unless you literally THROW that model onto the ground, or throw it into a burlap sack to transport it in between games, it isn't going to break, at all. If you used any plastic or gel based glue, the parts will stay together forever. There is no danger. I don't know why faggots keep repeating this fragility lie about plastic models. Now 3d printed models? In cheap shit ass resin? Those WILL shatter to pieces for little reason, unless you paid the $$$$ to get the better 'gamer focused' resin mixes that are as strong as the typical plastic model. Metal models that haven't been pinned (and even then) can also break on a table or if dropped. But that bullshit about GW plastics (or any modern plastic model) being fragile is just bullshit.
>>98141411>But that bullshit about GW plastics (or any modern plastic model) being fragile is just bullshit. The only thing that can (and will) break is spears of units of spearmen. Mostly historical issues, because GW spears are thicc af, but still. I dont know how many plastic spears i had to replace with aftermarket wire spears because they broke. Remember those Urukhai or easterling pikemen maybe? But in general you are right. GW plastic is super sturdy and i even dropped 3d printed minis, expecting a total damage and all that happened was the superglued base would come off.
