I’ve been away from 40k for a long time. Heard editions haven’t been well received. Anons what are your thoughts on this new edition? Will it make for fun gameplay? Give me your bad and give me your good feedback.
>>
>>98142063
Warhammer fans are vocal about the new edition and they are not happy. They’re discontented with the way every faction got rebooted like AoS and the whole rules bloat. I guess they were holding out hope for a good design direction. There’s even a petition that’s garnered thousands of signatures to have the edition changed. Obviously that won’t happen but it shows how unhappy they are.
>>

10e is a perfectly fine game to play about once a month without getting boring or stale and not a single game more frequently than that

i haven't been able to play with the leaked rules yet, but 11th is at least looking like it'll have a bit more flavour when it comes to list building, the shooting changes with the hidden effect and the adjustments to the assault phases seems like it'll give weaker melee armies a good boost.
I'll always go into a new edition with caution, but all the changes i've seen definitely feel like an improvement to 10th.

>>98142063
10th was a lot better than the clusterfuck that 9th left us with (and frankly, 10th is the best game that 40k has been in a long time) and 11th looks like a step up in several ways that, while not fundamentally changing how the game is played, are addressing some of the problematic things that are commonly present. Nothing sticks out as a bad change.

I would rather hear that line-of-site is changing to base-to-base rather than "true" because it's inherently flawed, but you have to try really hard to find someone who actually gives a shit about that and doesn't just measure to base for the sake of running the game smoothly. Good players understand each others intentions rather than looking out for any little gotcha they can grab to eek out a lead.

That is my take as someone who plays at least a couple of times a month and goes to tournaments about 5 times a year because more warhammer is more gaming, simple as.

Honestly same, 9th like pretty much every other edition had it's problem, but it still had flavour and every game had enjoyable moments, 10th just feels very clinically and actual fun moments were few and far between,
Also the pigeon holing army building was lame in 10th and i'm glad that that's been address in 11th.

I'm gonna be honest i can't remember an edition that hasn't ended with some sort of power creep, past editions I'd occasionally see bad match up of armies in my local meta that showed that off but people generally were able to play around it, 10th has actually been the edition where i've seen the most "bad" match ups where one player just couldn't play the game against their match up.

They would need to expand and grow enough that their numbers are more than a fraction of a fraction of everyone else's. But that's the hard part, and the moment they start moving in that direction they become more of a priority to fight against. They would need something like a straight-up alliance with the Eldar and/or Votaan.

Hidden is a pretty big nothingburger due to small map constraints, GW terrain not being complete walls that block LoS all around the footprint, and all a tank has to do to see through the terrain is toe the footprint. With FLY also being massively buffed and 8" deepstrike, shooting is going to dominate again.

Commorragh is by far the most densely populated single city or planet or anything of the species left, but it's no more than the 10 most populous craftworlds combined.

Okay then the Eldar would definitely be the least populous race then, cause they'd have a population of, what, maybe tens of trillions? 100 trillion at most?
>>
>>98142443
Plus according to the lore there are quite a lot of craftworlds that are merely just smaller than the big named ones, which all add up to the number of Craftworld Eldar.

Yeah the appeal of the Tau is that they get stronger every time the lore advances. Back in 9th edition they were probably smaller than the Eldar, but 2 editions later they're almost certainly larger. They used to not have FTL, now they do. They used to not have a goddess or warp weapons, now they have both. So on and so forth.

Even the mechs getting bigger is a representation of this.

In general yes, their infantry kits have a lot of spare bits, being one of the last kits being made while GW was still designing kits to generally be modular or multibuild. Acolytes in particular leave you with a lot of bits, as the kit builds those or Metamorphs, with the arms and heads for each being completely separate (besides the sidearm, but they give you two separate options for those as well). But given that they come in boxes of 5, I thought I'd have fun with the spare bits and also build twice as many models in one go as I could if I built Metamorphs properly from the box. It took a bit of work to get the arms lined up in a slightly more natural looking way, though, most of them I had to shave down armpits and shoulders to bring them tighter together and also change the angles so they didn't look weirdly posed on a model with a more upright posture.

The Emperor is just a standard 'city founding' hero but since the setting is galatic he created the galatic empire.
The Emperor is beleived to be real even though its all so over the top he should be seen as just a mythological theory. The founder of the ancient greek city of Thebes, Cadmus a demigod buried dragon teeth and warriors grew from the sown teeth, bought literacy and the cocneopt of a written language.
The HH is a founding myth and the BL series did more damage to the setting than women space marines would, It should of stayed as myth and the cause of the excistence of CSM never really specified. Daddy issues as a motive is a sign of poor and very uncreative writing.

It literally could not be more obvious and heavy-handed. His suffering on the Golden Throne after sacrificing himself for humanity is an allegory for the crucifixion except 40k is so grimdark it doesn't end and then lead to a resurrection, he just keeps suffering for 10,000 years and counting.

It actually isn't and never was, this is a myth spawned by the people who thought Starship Troopers inspired 40k (it didn't) and that Starship Troopers was a satire (it wasn't, only the movie was, which came years after 40k did) because not only did those people never read 40k rulebooks, they never read Starship Troopers either.

Rick Priestley has been pretty explicit. The setting was made straight up, it has satirical elements in it because gaming nerds are funny guys and there's no need to be serious all the time, but calling the work itself a "satire" is like saying every movie that ever had a single joke in it is a satire even if the other 98% was straight up serious action.

None of this is true, not even a little bit. Andy Chambers straight up debunked the fake bullshit claim that Ghazghkulls name is a joke about Thatcher. She wasn't referenced at all in 40k. Neither was the setting even remotely satirical even in Rogue Trader outside a handful of jokes.

The green menace first came to Oracleus in M35, during Waaagh Stonetoof. The conflict nearly destroyed what little civilization existed on it before the arrival of the Coal Hearts. They all but obliterated the horde that had landed, but small bands of Ork’s managed to escape the destruction of Stonetoof’s Krew. Eventually going savage in the wastelands and deep deserts of Oracleus. They became a constant threat for the people who ventured into their territory. Attempts to finally eradicate them proved fruitless. Young warriors of the Knight houses would come down from the highlands and hunt the greenskins for sport while systematic sweeps by Coal Heart and Tejanan aircraft obliterated any settlement or warband they came across. Yet the next year the beasts would return just as numerous. The vast scrap fields and dead hive cities were full of machinery the Ork’s could repurpose for war. The dangerous native life and atmospheric toxins only seemed to make the surviving Orks even tough. Ork attacks on Digger salvage expeditions are a fact of life for the hardy men and women who scratch trinkets out of the dirt to trade to Tejana. In recent decades the Ork threat has become an even more tenacious problem. Constant offworld wars have drawn away most of the Knights, and the Coal Hearts spend years away from home on every front of the beleaguered Lucium Sector. Rumours of a Sneakboss, an unusually crafty ork warlord, persist as raids on lowland settlements rise and grow in sophistication. The Voidwardens, the armed wing of the chapter’s Bondforged auxilliaries strike quickly whenever these attacks come, but all too often all they find is ashes and blood. Some worry that one day soon the Greenskins will grow strong enough to threaten all life on Oracleus yet again.

TLDR:

They kill them with fire but are usually too busy dealing with Necrons and chaos to stick around long enough to make sure they got them all.

Thanks. I'll be honest I've been checked out for 10th edition and just hobbying for the joy of it. From what I gather, they've had their gimmick reworked to function like an endless swarm army. They still use the ambush tokens to bring in units, but it happens during the game and only for units that have been destroyed. So it's effectively a respawn mechanic, when a unit with the army rule is destroyed (basically only infantry have it), you can spend a point resource called Resurgence (the amount you get is based on army size, and the amount you spend is based on the unit) you put a token down. The opponent can clear the token off the table if they get within 9" during their turn, but otherwise when it's your next turn you get to put any of your respawned units back into play around it.

It seems pretty fun, I just wish GW would nail down what the army's gimmick is and stick to it.

The issue with the christ analogy is that unlike christ who was sinless and died to redeem mankind, the Emperor was a tyrant whose own actions led to the hell he suffers from, and arguably doomed mankind to it's spiral towards oblivion. At no point did the Emperor redeem humanity, he sought to subjugate mankind under his all encompassing tyrannical vision for mankind. He stole power from evil gods to create artificial golems to lead his armies via which to subjugate humanity. Armies composed of brainwashed and indoctrinated and augmented superhumans created solely for killing. Comparing the Emperor to Christ is borderline blasphemous given what kind of figure the Emperor is in 40k.

The point is not to say the Emperor actually IS Christ or even Christ-like in his behavior, just that the way his sacrifice and suffering is foundational to the worship of the Imperial cult is very much based on real-world (especially medieval) Christianity. Part of what makes the setting so dark is all the ways that he diverges from the True Christ and in some ways is actually more like an Anti-Christ figure as well, but the allegory of the crucifixion still holds somewhat.

That's the PIE divine patriarch with lightning powers fighting a killing a dragon/mosnterous serpent idea right? The only ever said that Ghazgul's name wasn't Thatcher's because they didn't want to think about the big bad witch.
Their biggest inspirations were 2000AD, including Judge Dredd which are absolutely MIRED in critique of Thatcher's Britain.
And it's British satire. It's not like an American joke where it's build up -> build up -> build up -> punchline, everyone laughs.
It's presenting a wild and whimsical dark future that is what will happen if Thatcher and her conservative government continues to get their way. It's meant to be over the top and terrible and its humor is simple in how over the top and terrible it is. The recent Tithes short that has a crew collect an ammunition tithe from a planet besieged by orks, dooming it and everyone on it because they have to take their taxes. Only to have the Administratum schedule that very tithe a planet died for for destruction because they simply don't have room for it is a perfect example of the sort of satire that 40k has always run on.
Not the "haha funny!" jokes. The "oh shucks, that's bureaucracy!" satire that lets itself linger in your face.

You are so fucking brainrotted. Nothing about 40k was meant to be a warning about the future, it was written to be like the medieval age, or rather the pop cultural gritty comic book version of the medieval age, IIIN SPAAACE.

Also the bureaucracy stuff being the butt of jokes doesn't mean the entire setting was made with that in mind, and it wasn't. First and foremost, more than anything else, the setting was made to be badass. It was made for rule of cool smashing toys together. It was made to allow all kinds of crazy space war scenarios with fantastical aliens and creatures and sci-fi technobabble junk. The occasional poking at bureaucracy was never more than a side gag and it was more about Priestley expressing his frustration and distaste at working for money-grubbing business types than it was about the fucking government.

King Arthur built his kingdom (Imperium), created a Round Table of powerful knights (Primarchs), quested after a great boon to his people (Webway), ignored the threat if his rebellious son (Horus) & his knights felt into in-fighting leaving the kingdom weak & near ruin (Horus Heresy) he met his son in combat where he slew his son but was in turn mortally wounded & born to Avalon (Golden Throne)

For Solomon its mostly being a wise Patriarch, dealing with Chaos & getting bit, etc. I mean, if you actually read, comprehended, & drew your own honest connections youd know it immediately.

Decided to start an Iron Warriors army for 11th. I have not really paid attention to the Chaos Marines model range in the past so I’m not 100% sure on what’s is new versus old and likely to be replaced.

Bought the Hellforged Warband as a starting point, so hope those models are safe from being updated anytime soon.

But are there any models I should avoid buying because they are likely to be updated in the next 1-2 years. I know the chaos bikers are pretty much guaranteed to be updated when Chaos Marines gets their codex, and possibly the rhino chassis vehicles. Anything else I should be cautious about buying?

>5 infernus marines
>1 winged tyranid prime
>1 psychophage

355 points of marines
405 points of tyranids

Should I get the starter set? They're about $100 a piece and I expect them to dry up rather soon.

If I buy more than one for the purpose of building both armies, which units should I sell and which should I keep?

>Rick Priestley has been pretty explicit. The setting was made straight up, it has satirical elements in it because gaming nerds are funny guys and there's no need to be serious all the time, but calling the work itself a "satire" is like saying every movie that ever had a single joke in it is a satire even if the other 98% was straight up serious action.

>>98143282
It's literally just brainlets not understanding the difference between "satire" and "satirical". Something can be satirical without being a satire. 40k *is* satirical, it's satirical of a lot of modern institutions, it's satirical of british popular culture, but all of that is couched in straightforward presentation that belies the unseriousness of its satirical elements. But most people these days are so media illiterate that they have to categorize things by the simplest function they can identify, so when you tell them "40k has satirical elements", they go, "oh so it's a satire, then".

>Why is the satire thing still pushed?
Leftists trying to get into warhammer (not because they like it, literally just so they can destroy it) trying to rationalize to themselves that the setting cannot possibly be so popular unless it agrees with their insane worldviews and anything based about it is actually just "making fun of the chuds", many such cases etc.

The thing is 40k wasn't intentionally made to be right wing either, it was basically apolitical at its deepest core (it just happened to have a bunch of based messages by accident by unwittingly creating a fictional environment in which that kind of attitude is expressly necessary for survival), but zoomers have been so surrounded by the internet culture war their ENTIRE lives they cannot even conceive of a time when that wasn't a thing, so to them the idea that 40k wasn't pushing a message is impossible, and they therefore believe it MUST be a leftoid message satirizing chuddom or whatever.
>>
>>98143300
>that spoiler
What even is that originally intended to mean versus the Reddit bastardized version?
I will admit I might be part of the problem in that I know some elements are satire and satirical, but it is in a way where the universe and the imperium is a mess and strained under the effects of 10k+ years of constant warfare and trying to hold mankind together to stall the inevitable end.
But even my interpretation is probably wrong too.
>>98143310
The imperium was meant to be absurd due to the conditions of the universe if I recall correctly.
Like I said above I might be part of the problem and I’m okay with being shown what the correct view is.

I’m seeing it now. It is satirical but the book isn’t in a goofy comedic kind of satire.
That book made me not like slogans at all. I should have learned something more about good intentions leading to hell or how slowly victory can be eroded into another form of defeat and bondage but the dislike of slogans stuck with me the hardest.

Nigger the woke freaks pushing fem marines are all over social media and are very proud to tell you they do so. The femstodes were pushed on GW by DEI cultists they hired because ESG money infected everyone with that shit and we have Larry Fink admitting things like this on camera, we have public records of how much GW stock is owned by Blackrock. Who do you think you are fooling??

>Consolidation Moves in 11e

Am I reading it badly or is it just missing a section on what happens if a unit is eligible to Consolidate (meaning it was eligible to fight in the current fight phase) but is not engaged, within 3" of of an enemy unit, or within 3" of an objective? By the rules as I can read them, the unit is eligible to Consolidate but all 3 modes available would result in an illegal move, because they each have requirements on where the unit can be by the end of that move that it cannot satisfy.
>>

>>
>>98143759
I'm leaning on it being better, but i've yet to have a game so I wont pass judgement yet.
>>
>>98143728
yeah, read the core rules, the codex for the army you want to play and that is usually good enough to start getting intro games in. then once you're familiar you can start grabbing additional rules like mission card packs and following online updates, but dont worry about that as a brand new never touched the game player.

there are also battle reports on youtube you can watch to get an idea of how the game plays

these guys are usually pretty good watching for new or casual players: https://www.youtube.com/@tabletoptactics/videos

their content is easy to follow, reasonably high production value so no listening through tin can audio, they've been putting out content for 10+ years so they're pretty stable.

https://www.youtube.com/@TabletopTitans
this is another one thats pretty good, and in my experience dont mince words about when something is good or bad.

aside from them you can find more niche or competitive focused channels, but those are probably the two easiest entry points for a new player looking to watch some games and breakdowns
>>
>>98143809
they seem better but i wouldnt put it past GW to overcomplicate it with a 150 page errata document. pretty sure 10ths errata to the core rules ended up being larger than the core rules itself at one point

Go to local GW store to see if they’ll run a demo game with you (maybe bring a buddy too) Or if you already have models, ask about their learning days
>”But my GW store doesn’t have all that!”
Go to LGS’s in your area and ask around about learning days, they’re usually pretty nice about that.

a painted model is 1000x better than no model, do it up, and i'd say a small hover transport counts as quick and nimble, its whole purpose is getting guys from A to B faster (quick) than they would normally go, and the impulsor has a special disembark after an advance rule which i would say is pretty nimble

I love this fucking image so much it's unreal.
A tour of duty in the guard is typically several decades, so surviving it to completion is already unlikely. Then add the fact that she's abhuman, and we already saw how they are treated in Mossa's rendition of the Imperium, so her survival becomes even less likely. Then add the fact that she got a fucking medal! An abhuman! Getting a medal! She must have lost her limbs performing some kind of purple heart level last stand (including calling an artillery barrage upon her own location) against the archenemy despite being just a signals officer.
And then she managed to come back home! Despite all the calamities of travel in the imperium - all the xenos/chaos raids and warp accidents and diseases in the passenger holds, despite all that she came back home alive.
Absolutely love the level of background info you can glean just from a single picture.
