Starting my face training arc. I've got like 12 space marine heads all ready to go so hopefully between these two and the last I see a noticeable improvement.
How do they look? I primarily used Bugman's Glow mixed with increasing amounts of AK Basic Skin. Before this I'm pretty sure my other faces were just contrast maybe with some highlights. I'm following Duncan's face video so I can hopefully work up to Vince's.

I tried speedpainting the entire squad. The green armor and darkblue undersuit aren't as distinct as I wanted them to be. but I think they turned out pretty good. I also didn't include the shoulder armor panel, it's just too big and I dont' think it looks good.

contrast paint, while fast, is not what is typically meant by the term speedpainting.
>>
>>98148837
Army Painter Speedpaints are just contrast paints though. I think contrast only is a kind of speedpainting isn't it?
>>
>>98148837
they're called speedpaints on the bottle. if speedpainting is something else idk.
>>
>>98148947
the term speedpainting is not synonymous with the product line of speed paints, which are a kind of contrast paint, contrast paints being much newer than the varied techniques which the term speed painting encompasses.
Speed painting being a technique makes a distinction from the use of contrast paints which are meant to preclude the use of any technique. If you are following the use of contrast paints with drybrushing or other methods then it falls under speed painting.
While that seems odd in that it adds time to the process, speed painting is a developed skill, not just the act of putting paint on fast.

Oh yeah I agree now you put it that way. Contrast paints and Speedpaints are a tool to be used in speed painting , just contrast over primer is something else. Speaking of, green contrast is on. Black gonna cover the ugly layer lines on the printed bits.
>>
>>98148993
Speed painting is just the act of painting really fast. Contrast paints or AP speed paints are a great way to speed paint when it comes to miniatures.
>>
>>98149027
No, because dipping your mini in unthinned paint does not count as speed painting.
>>
>>98149097
There's no rules in speed painting apart from it being fast and involving paint.
>>
>>98149110
it is a loosely defined category because many different techniques are caught under the umbrella, the thing that unites them all is that they are all learned techniques and dipping has never been counted amongst them, so while slapchop counts, just putting pure contrast overtop a uniform light primer doesn't, the distance between those two is short, but it makes the line clear.
>>
>>98149125
According to whom?
>>
>>98149138
I'm not writing the rules, I'm observing the consistent pattern of everything that has been collectively referred to as speed painting over the years, and it is a step beyond just applying paint fast.
>>
>>98147804
thats pure sexo.
>>
>>98149150
If photobashing is considered a speed painting technique, I don't see why contrast paints wouldn't be. There's nothing in the definition that would exclude them, you're just making baseless claims.

Speed painting is a term that applies to all of those. It's the use of techniques to speed up the process of painting. Among those techniques are things like photobashing and stenciling, so I don't see how one could argue that contrast paints don't count.
>>
>>98149524
Yes.
>prime
>base coat with your shadow color
>hit the upward facing areas with your mid tone
>hit the extremes of the mid tone with your highlight
>touch up the shadows again if necessary
>touch up the highlights if necessary
>using a brush, base and paint details and other parts that aren't your main color
>using a brush, edge highlight only in select places where it's important (e.g. around the head)
>hit the model with some gloss varnish
>oil wash (you can experiment with different colors here)
>matte varnish
And you're done.

>>98149539
We are talking about conventional terminology relating to miniature painting techniques. I think the sentiment of the anon objecting to the tau is that they don't meet a standard (based on vibes ) . Dude is on crack. "Contrast paint" (which is GW's brand name for it) is almost synonymous with the concept of speed painting to the point that a prominent distributor of such paints calls their line "speed paints".
>>
>>98149553
Speed painting is a universal concept, but even if we narrow the argument to miniatures, I don't see how contrast paint, which is explicitly made to speed up the process, would be excluded.
And I dislike contrast paint, so I'm not trying to defend or elevate it or whatever.

How do I glue small resin kits without gluing my hands as well? It's a pain in the ass with normal superglues. Is there a specific model or brand better for precise steps?
>>
>>98152365
You can get the bottles with the tiny nozzles or pour the super glue onto something like a bottle cap, then use a needle tip or a dentist's tool to apply small amounts directly to the part.
>>
>>98152365
use gel versions of ca, apply it with a toothpick or something

I'm thinking based.

I paid extra for those CA bottles with tiny brush and never looked back, it's simply too convenient. Much easier to avoid applying too much at once.

Thx man

Today I was using my previous, Polish/Chinese airbrush solely for applying varnish (now serving solely for primer and varnish role after I got H&S Evolution) and I want to admit something. I was standing firm on stance that "airbrush is airbrush, no point in paying extra when so called middle class Chinese model is good enough" and don't get me wrong, it is still serving me right and is perfectly usable for normal painting/shading/etc as well. But there are some small things, some small details that makes H&S simply much more comfortable in use and cleaning. By all means, I don't regret starting with little more simple (and standard screw nozzle) Chinese model and I guess that it is more reasonable for starting users to get something they won't regret too much breaking but I also understand why people recommend getting H&S or Iwata right off the bat.

I stand corrected. I was wrong. I'm sorry.

I wasn't involved in this entire airbrush debate, but it takes a man to admit he was wrong. Especially in the sperg central that is 4chan. Solid fucking form, anon.
>>
>>98152534
Well of course they are based, surely you wouldnt expect a fully painted army to still have those bare black bases?
>>
>>98152232
These are spectacular! Where'd you get the grass tufts?

Only been painting a few months and I've got kind of a strange mix of paints right now. I feel like every time I've looked up what paints people recommend it's always some vague "Just buy what you need" answer but based on what I've got here are there some essentials I should think about adding?

This shit is so fucking tiresome. I hardly use this, and now the cap is completely warped for no reason. Turned it inside out and full cleaned and still doing it. Wasn't there a rumor that GW was moving to droppers, so they cam look like an actual company that wants to have shit people will buy.
>>
>>98153357
I highly recommend getting some chinesium droppers(they're really cheap) and transferring your GW paints. Those fucking pots are an actual insult to the customer.
>>

Not really anon, it depends on what you're painting and what scheme you want. I could say you don't have any purple, but what if you don't paint anything purple?

sucked up by the air-compressor vent? Maybe a crumb of bluetack fell off your shirt while brushing with the lid off? Pretty strange though, to be sure. That shit could've gunked it up good.

The best way to honor him is to do a miniature and raise a glass. Anyone who actually paints or converts something for him to go with the sad video is not a fag. I'm pulling a couple things that were on the perpetual Shame Pile and putting them back on the bench.

>>98152013
Honestly you got that pretty well, especially the non-continuous border on their spots. Most people fuck that up.

Thank you, I did use an actual snow leopard as photo reference, too bad I could only find decent smilodon big cats for the sculpt and not good leopard sculpts, the heads and tails are all wrong.
>>
>>98153357
I've had a few of these. It seems to be a molding error in the cap. I carved a little but out with my knife and it helped.

I would've gone with a different plasma color since it kinda blends into the turquoise armor but I can't deny that glow effect is immaculate

Tips for painting hard rubber on minis? Im not trying to paint wheels (yet) But Im trying to get the texture and shine right for a model cover in rubber armor.
>>
>>98154328
Black with a matte finish. Rubber doesn't have a recognizable look, you recognize it by context.
