I wanna buy some miniatures. Not for any particular reason, but I just want some gaming minis because I like them.

I was looking at Oathmark stuff which has a comfy classic feel and I'm a big fan of generic soldier guys when they're done well, but I figured I'd ask here.

What are your favorite gaming minis purely on vibe? I'm more inclined towards alternative models instead of GW, but I dont want to exclude anything.

I like the Frostgrave range for generic fantasy guys, got a lot of use out of them for skirmish games and RPGs, mostly hard plastic with some special metal models for specific units.
Reaper is a big one. Their plastic isn't the best, but it's serviceable and a lot of their sculpts are good. Crooked Dice also has a lot of neat stuff, including a lot of direct copyright dodging references to old TV shows and movies.

Good to hear; a cool model is a cool model, regardless of where it comes from. I'll admit the bulk of my collection is GW but that's largely down to availability and actual gaming reasons, though I do like the aesthetics too.
I recently became aware of a range called Moonstones. Not sure I'd get into it as a game, looking at some let's plays on youtube, but the models have a lovely Henson/Josh Kirby/old fairy tale book feel.

If you just want some plastic minis to tinker around with, I would second Frostgrave >>98148452 and also mention Wargames Atlantic and Victrix. All three do reasonably priced plastic kits which are easily to build and have some customisability.

Oathmark orcs are awesome, I'm less convinced by their humans and elves tho.
I also love the GW old world (ex fantasy) beastmen.

And most recently, I fell in love with The Damned, by Wargames Atlantic

North star’s oathmark frostgrave and Stargrave are pretty good.
Then check wargames Atlantic’s offerings.
Then for historicals try victrix and perry miniatures.
For the old stuff look at wargames foundry’s stuff.

As for North Star and wargames Atlantic I think there is an artistry to designing models that are “generic done right.”
I can’t really explain it but the models have to be “aesthetically flexible” and I think that is the heart of generic done right.

The damned fucking rock holy shit

I wish North star allowed me to get better previews on the models
Wargames Atlantic is incredible. Shame about the limit of their lines

WGA’s release schedule can be a bit unpredictable.
But I think they are masters in generic done right.
