I am so sorry to pass on that John Blanche passed away on Monday.

There is so much to say about him. The worlds he shaped with his distinctive eye. He leaves so much behind.

Rest in Peace.

Ratspike, Mordheim, Dredfleet, VooDoo Forest, whole Inq28 and Blanchitsu movement, a good chunk of WHFB, HH and 40k aesthetic, even some AoS stuff.
Some many things were influenced by, carried or even pushed thru by his artistic vision it is hard to image them any other way.
His passing leaves a gaping, pustulent wound.
Godspeed, Master

I remember being a wee lad and i saw the art for the 2nd, i think, edition Sisters of Battle Codex and that sold me on warhammer. Not only was his ability to blend sci-fi and medieval gothic second to none but his imagery reminiscent of black death era paintings of the apocalypse translated to the far future were so evocative and striking. You just don't see his like anymore.

>John Blanche’s wife Lin has asked me to let you all know that John passed away a couple of days ago.
>John was an inspirational artist, devoted to his family and a good friend to many. Always generous with his time and knowledge, he was very well loved by all who knew and worked with him. He’ll be hugely missed.
>The world of Warhammer was brought to life by his vision of the grimdark setting and I know his art meant a lot to so many of you. He leaves behind an enormous legacy that has enriched many people’s lives.

I think it's unlikely we'll ever see individual artists be so influential ever again. There are plenty of amazing artists nowadays, you can find them in a variety of spheres, but the corporate nature of entertainment will make sure they are shuffled around and never able to truly make a mark of their own in the way the likes of Blanche and Frazetta did.

>>
>>98150599
Yes. Corporate sterility and the demand for a marketable (patentable) art style has forced all to adhere to a template in every game and genre. There can be no creativity, ONLY THE ALMIGHTY STYLE SHEET TO WHICH ALL MUST ADHERE UNDER PENALTY OF DEATH.

Also digital art, which isnt inherently bad on its own, but has led to even more sameness thanks to being easily able to go back and "correct" any artistic deviations that might emerge.

Blanche's vision of the 41st millennium was tired and outdated. Sure his work shaped the early warhammer universe, but we've moved so far beyond that all the call-backs just look out of place in comparison to the modern style of 40k.

It sucks that he's passed, but hopefully GW can now shake off the vestiges of the oldhammer style and commit fully to the newer artists they currently have.

I never liked his artwork.
But he was much more than a painter.
He came up with the four Chaos Gods alongside Bryan Ansell (and we will never know which of the two invented what). He was almost surely responsible for the design and the color of each of the "Big Four". Personally I believe he was the one who decided "Four" was the perfect number.
He also had a big brain and a big personality, he fought tooth and nail to keep Warhammer's aesthetic as dark as possible, he basically invented the word "grimdark" (and also the Black Templars). He was still the architect behind much of the artwork he didn't make, he chose which artists he wanted.
Also, he may single-handedly be responsible for bringing large battle scenes back to Western Art, after a long, long period of time where everyone wanted a focus on the individual and personality.
I probably dislike every single work he ever painted, but he was the foundation of all Warhammer art I like.
And he was involved in a leadership role in the design of Warhammer from the start.

Blanche said in an interview that the Nighthaunt were the most impressive passage from artwork to model he had ever seen, he was very impressed with the ranged, I think it was his favourite.

Yeah, I think even if his linework is not for you he was so definitional to the appearance and style of Warhammer, and either chose or influenced the people who are probably the most popular GW artists like Kopinski, that you have to give him his due. But I love Blanche's own artwork.

Certainly an image like this makes me more intrigued by something like 40k which like a lot of sci fi ends up being even more magical than fantasy. The current aesthetic is technically "good" but not atmospheric. The tell is they always recycled images but you didn't mind but now it's annoying.

Depends on the army. Nighthaunt and Kharadron overlords seem to be based very closely on his concepts, while others like stormcast or gloomspite gitz have more subtle influence.
Funnily enough like a week ago I was contemplating trying to send an email or whatever his way to ask on what other (if any) AoS armies he did concept art for, but I got distracted by some other stuff. Maybe it's for the best that I didn't bother him with nonsense like that in his final days. Or maybe he would've appreciated the interest. Who knows.

>Posts a Romantic painting
You are artistically illiterate.

Ironically enough, John Blanche was a big enjoyer of art from many periods of history, his own work was influenced by Napoleonic era paintings, medieval illuminations and baroque art. Unlike you, he would've also been able to tell apart different periods in art.

Rest In Peace, John Blanche. Him and GW had moved away from each other for a long time now. But his artistic vision, along with a few other legends, set the aesthetic underpinning of these worlds for me and a lot of other people. It will continue to do so as well, the shit they churn out these days is forgettable whereas this stuff is timeless. Thanks for setting my mind ablaze John.

Some people believe you can make great designs by stacking good design elements on top of each other. But for the most part, what separates a great design thing from a mediocre one is the whole. It really doesn't matter all that much if your concepts aren't drawn that great if the perfect version of that design lives in your mind and you can recruit someone more capable to realize it for you.

Blanche was very clearly exposed and trained on the world of classical art

His work is a steal for the likes of John Martin mixed with the new wave impressionism and modified to fit the zeitgeist of the 70's through 80's

Older art strives for realism because photography didn't exist and neither did AI. Instead it tries to evoke a feeling and passion

Blanches art is also art for mass consumption and printing so its clearly not filling the same niche as a 4x3 canvas artwork on the wall, it needs to fit the page.

I'm not going to call myself a total admirer of his work but it has definite aesthetic qualities and evocotive styles when coupled with the dark gothic text of the setting that completes them both

I hope you have a good rest on the other side.

OK, so I might have confused something. Or maybe it was a full-page ilustration in some Epic-related material.

He was also much more controversial. They didn't do any for Paul Sawyer either.

Sawyer had worked for Warlord for a long time at that point, who I think did do a proper obituary for him so maybe GW didn't feel the need to, whereas Blanche was a company man for like 35 years before he retired

It's not GW policy to have obitury's this isn't the comic industry where an artist or writer dies, they get a page in months' releases, pic being an example of one this week from Marvel.
Maybe in next month's White Dwarf they can sacrifice a page of two of ads for one

Seemed like a really nice chap. As i understand it he was also in charge of the GW art department for a long period and under his guidance was the period i enjoyed the most and really got my imagination going which sadly none of the new art does in the same way. His vision and art undoubtedly shaped the entire setting for the better. My favourite is probably the BFG box or maybe some of the random necron concepts. Rest in piece old fella, you will be missed.

Rather than just shit on you like everyone else, I'll actually address this bait, because I bet there are a couple of people who actually think that.

Yes, some of his work hasn't aged well. You could say the same of a lot of art from the eighties, particularly fantasy art. Styles have simply moved on. And it's the nature of working as a commercial artist that a lot of minor works end up looking a little janky.

But look at that >>98150412, or >>98150545, and try to tell me with a straight face that he didn't have a level of genius. His eye for using colour, creating the sensation of action, and for composition of a frame were the equal of any fantasy artist of his time.

And not only did he capture the techno-gothic the creators of 40k were going for perfectly, he defined the aesthetic of early 40k. Putting aside the question of his talent for a moment, a lot of 40k is built on his vision. He deserves to be commemorated on this board for that alone.
>>
>>98153555
These fags speaking out like the little insignificant roaches they are regarding a titan of Warhammer’s past would be the same kind of people who throw tomato sauce on art pieces in museums like their commie fuckwad comrades in arms. I have no respect for the distaste. The losers that comment like this never created anything of their own while at the same time sit and judge like some Cheeto dust BMI of 45 losers they are. They are like food critics that can’t cook. It’s laughable.

Short answer, they are pure unfiltered losers of the highest order.
>>

Eh... I like it, but it's not his BEST stuff. Those are things like the BFG and Epic 40k box arts, the original Sisters of Battle Codex cover... and of course this.

Because of me, the 2nd edition box artwork is the definition of what 40k IS.

40K's greatest strength is the fact that the universe function on the logic of what someone around the ages of five to nine finds awesome. They looked at stuff like Star Wars and just went "Yeah yeah, but what if it was even cooler than that?! What if there was an entire army of Darth Vaders with big guns? What if instead of gray robot camels it was a walking church with laser cannons and Gatling guns. What if there were that tanks shot rounds the size of oil drums? What if people used chainsaw swords!?"
>>
>>98153752

Oh fuck, I forgot about this one >>98153752
, yeah add that to the pile too.
>>
What make's Blanche's style both unique and beloved? I feel like if someone tried to do it now, it'd look like cheap concept art, but among the Impressionistic profiles and tones there is so much detail packed into things and so much emotion even in the way snow falls in a portrait of a Voystroyan or in the faces of a horde of zealots standing behind a Sister of Battle.
>>
>>98151836
>by x I of course meant y
Face it you've got no fucking idea. Which is fine, but you're going to act like you're hot shit you actually need to know something if you don't want to make a fool of yourself.

The guy's doing you a favour by telling you what the era you invariably like is called, you might find something else you could possibly appreciate. Unless the factory that pumps out dysfunctionally autistic 4chan posters has given you a firmware update, you like a handful of romantic and neoclassical works. Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, Oath of the Horatii, a handful of other Caspar David Friedrich works, and if you like anything more recent or abstracted it's going to be Beksiński. You've done well to post something not quite so clichéd. I did write most, but I'd go so far as to say all of the early GW artists had a better degree of knowledge than you, because frankly leafing through a few art books on the shelf or having a long visit to a major gallery would be all it takes. Which again, wouldn't mean anything if you weren't a complete retard being smug and having deluded yourself into thinking you have an inherent superiority.

Anyway, you were baiting by being an inflammatory retard, seems you just didn't realise that's what you're actually gifted at.
>>
>>98153759
A big part of it is the medium IMO. Blanche's more sketchy works are still really textural so I don't think they're the best example of this, but if you go back to some of the old b&w codex art there's background objects that fade into really gestural lines and wash, that, even with better digital brushes still looks like unfinished garbage. It's the subtle textures of physical media.
>>
>>98153752
Nemesis the Warlock and 70s French comics were already doing most of that though
>>
>>98153848
Most of his art really looks like daydreaming, where you have a central piece which is somewhat chaotic, and the background is fading as its not in focus of your mind
>>
>>98153674
What exactly is it about it that you don't like? I'm >>98153555 btw
>>
>>98153759
The thing about Blanche's concept art is that it lays out very clear textures and shapes to work with. It's inspirational without being a straightjacket, and it's why he fires the imagination. He also did a hell of a job showing people how to weld hilariously different models into a single army with little extra bits and a palette
>>
>>98153858
A true fact that doesn't change the fact that warhammer is great for doing it as well.
>>
>>98153555
>some of his work hasn't aged well.
Wrong.
>>98153759
It's just so creative, but despite being chaotic and gestural it's not messy, there's a lot of detail and a really striking palette.
>>
>>98150398
This isn't bad but it looks more like Russ Nicholson's style than Blanche.

>>98153527

Rest in peace, what a fucking sad one. I'm glad I was able to run shoulders with him briefly at BOYL, though we didn't interact it felt like seeing Bigfoot or something to have seen Blanche himself rolling dice at a table in person. His creative vision and artworks were always what attracted me to Warhammer before anything else. A true creative.
>>
>>98151753
His talent was wasted on such hackey bullshit of a game
>>
>>98154039
Yeah. He spoke positively about Mike Franchina's art as well, which makes sense considering it's basically a simulacrum of Blanche's style.
I suppose you could say he poorly judged TC's character, although he was at GW for a lot of their bullshit too. For all we rightly appreciate him for, he probably was familiar with not rocking the boat.

I remember years back those words on the banner launched me into a autistic spree to make more sense of it. I identified it as a quote from Dante's inferno. I was then curious how it had been translated into my own language. I made research and concluded that there had been 14 different translations over the centuries. I managed to track down and borrow half of them from different public libraries, just so I could look up different interpretations and translations of these words from the 40k art.
I also actually have the very RTB box with this art, but that is just by random chance.
>>
>>98152804
The stuff you find cool when you're 10 doesn't stop being cool when you're 30 because a redditor tells you so
>>
>>98154114
What's even less well known is that the central figure on that banner is that of Duncanius Rhodius. He is revered as something of a saint, and some Imperial Guard regiments pray to him as an intercessionary figure when they feel their coats are not thin enough.

Not going to waste image count with this post. IYKYK

>>98150545
The defining 40k artwork for me. Of course, it was on the box that me and friend bought and split between us way back in 2000.
The image is my personal proof that at the end of the day there is nothing else like 40k and for me there never will be.
I also always find it mindbogglingy that the guy who painted this was the same guy who made all that other more "sketchy" illustrations.
