What makes a generic model’s designs good rather than bad?

And what are some other examples other than wargames atlantic’s the damned?

What do you mean by a generic model?
>>
>>98153909
>generic done right
In the wargaming miniature space I think it is down to the flexibility of reuse model designs can allow for.
In terms of the damned they can be used as bad guy mooks not just for 40k but also for other sci-fi skirmish wargames and then their designs allow them to look like high tech to post apocalyptic to bear future and even wasteland soldiers.

I always liked these guys from Khurasan. General purpose sci-fi scavengers or nomads. They have a heavy weapons team with a few more futuristic looking weapons.

Something that is not unique nor is it original and yet designed well enough to be used for more purposes than it may originally be intended to with little modification if any.
Your miniature pic’s example is good too as historical figures from the age those models represent can be repurposed for fantasy settings too.

>What makes a generic model’s designs good rather than bad?
When it's not actually generic. Look at Mantic's Asterians vs. Enforcers. The Asterians are their own thing even though it's also clear what they take inspiration from, while the Enforcers are truly generic because they fill the role of space marines and Mantic didn't want to cut it close.
>>
>>98153920
That's just a Starcraft marine

Northstar's Stargrave plastics are excellent: cross-compatible kits you can build how you like. I assume the Frostgrave and Oathmark sets are similar but haven't tried them.

I think anvil industry is a good example of making good generic models for a variety of settings usually from modern to post apocalyptic to various flavors of sci-fi.
I’m not sure why they haven’t dipped their toes into medieval fantasy though.

Flexibility indeed.
The damned are great, because they tick a lot of different boxes:
>goons with gas masks and AK-style rifles
This alone works in so many established settings
Then you got the option for the scarface heads, which allows for any kind of evil cultists too
Then you got the plain US M1 Style steelhelmet headoptions too - with them, you can use them for a generic "not so evil" militia or generic feeling army too.

And of course it helps that the plasitc pieces themselves are compatible with pretty much any other 28mm humans on the market.
They go together nicely with GW Guard, with pretty much any 3d printed Guard proxies, with Northstar Stargrave minis and also with Warlord Games WW2 stuff.

In comparison >>98153945 by Victrix.
I love the Rus, and i think they are among Victrix best models up to this day. But that set just works for Slavic Warriors of that time, and obviously for fantasy humans you would want to look like kievan rus. While they are more dynamic and better in detail in a model by model comparison, the set overall is not as versaitle.

>>98154954
Everything Northstar does in Plastic is great too, but with them, you need more sets to make them truely shine and show their versatility. But if you have a sprue of FG Cultists, SG Mercs and maybe a set of Oathmark Orcs, then the cross-compatibility is absolutely amazing.

>I’m not sure why they haven’t dipped their toes into medieval fantasy though.

To play devils advocate: Why should they? 40k/Grimdark is where the money is at, and maybe their manpower only allows them to sculpt a set at once, so they rather make one that makes a lot of money, than one that doesn't sell as well as your average "can be used within 40k"-set.
Or maybe, their sculptor does not like fantasy, or simply prefers to sculpt guns.

One of their older digital sets was semi-whfb witch/vampire-hunters btw.

>that pic
Is that all from the damned boxes minus the bases?
Just shave off the helm spikes and other spikes and greenstuff fill the gaps of the facial scarring?
Was that it? Or were other kits used?
>>
>>98155350
It is 100% damned, minus the bases, and minus the one arm with the smoke grenade (thats printed). I just thought it looks good with a squad of shotgunners for riot control or something.
Some of the sprues include "clean" helmets, without battle damage, without scars and without spikes.
No greenstuff was used, and no spikes were cut on those 4 guys.
>>
>>98155378
I gotta check my gamefound sprues then.
I obviously didn’t look close enough.
>>
>>98155387
Check the female infantry and the "hounds/handlers" sprue.
>>

>>98155387 (me)
What stl did you use and did you use any humanoid models for reference to get the proper model sizing right for 3d printed bits?
>>
>>98155388
I have female infantry but not the hounds and handlers.
I’ll check the female infantry though.
Thanks!

Makers Cult Universal Guard. Scales very nicely with GW Guard, which in turn scales very nicely with the Damned. So everything fits.

I honestly thing the UG range are some of the best generic minis out there, because they can made into everything pretty much, just like the Damned.
They already come with a large variety of head options, but the neck joints are the same, so you can use whatever style of heads you like with them too. My only complaint would be their guns, which look not really good in my opinion, but they fixed that with a later released upgrade pack, adding a better looking alternative rifle.
