I'm not arguing they should be canon. I'm trying to make a crossover AU with the Horus Heresy (yes, I know that's cringe, I'm bored and don't care) and keep running into the problem that there's too many fucking women in the setting.
Female mortals? Obviously.
Female aliens and demons? Sure, if you even count those as female.
Female Custodes? I wouldn't have given a shit of it weren't for the gaslighting "they've always been there" BS, so in an AU it feels fine.
Even female Primarchs work out fine.
But Space Marine equivalents? It's too early for SoB, they're not niche enough for SoS, I can sweep a couple under the rug, but there's too much of an empty gap if I ignore all of them.
Any of y'all have a better idea than just female Space Marines?

Either way, it's really easy to justify female characters that are at higher levels of skill/power/equipment. Even ignoring marines, there are a lot of crazy gene-modifications that exist. They're just typically expensive and not easily mass produced. Assassins are an easy example.
Unless you need an entire legion of women, it's not a big deal to just have all be one-offs. And if you really wanted to have a large quantity, you could probably justify someone setting up a 'Sisters of Psykana' being a bunch of combat-trained psyker ladies in power armor.

If i were the heresy era emperor and i had a glut of hypercompetent and rational female combatants who i cant cycle into the astartes legions but also dont want to waste the potential of, i think i would channel them into the logistics, science, navy and aerospace fighter programs. It's not 1:1, but that dyke who's always femdoming angron is a good bit of precident
