i hate the idea of npc only race in fantasy games most of the time it's cuz the game world has WAY TOO MANY RACES (high fantasy moment) but when they dont its usually some shitty "le grim dark low fantasy slop" where every race looks like a human OR if they do have non human races too they're just enemies or "too rare to play lol" why not just have 10 races and only 1 race look human (humans) might aswell make them the oldest race to exist (like elf tropes) and the other 9 races just follow and mimic human cultures or make up their own but still close to human.

overall i think humans being less common makes them fell special too

do you read tenfootpole (Bryce Lynch's OSR review blog) at all? he brings this up from time to time. basically, 'why have orcs, when human bandits exist?'
on the one hand, i absolutely get 'special creep' where every town has demonkin and cat-people and lord knows what else. on the other, it's a fantasy world and i want players/myself to encounter (intelligent) monsters.

so to me, the solution is just don't have it on the player side. yeah, humans are pretty damn broad, your choices in the game are what matters. and you recapture that feeling where rolling stats to play a DEMIHUMAN becomes significant again. 'holy shit, an elf in the party!' rather than, 'yawn, a dwarf? from the CORE rules...?'

1/10 races are humanoids who are relatively scarce, and 9/10 are weirdies who are more common.
So for example no elves or hobbits, and just replace them outright with the more exotic animal or monster races, and make them all playable

I hate the idea of filling in an arbitrary number of races just for the sake of having them.
Each race present in a game should have enough variety from the others to either feel different to play as, or feel different to fight against.
And there's no obligation to make a race for every possible playstyle either, you can still have only one or two races even in a complex game.

It's all down to what you and your group want to play.

player characters are special by default and the "rules" of their races don't apply to them.
