>you're solving my dungeon the WRONG way!
2 sounds like a good way to grind more XP
>MOMMY MOMMY THE DM IS A MEANIE AND WONT LET ME WIN WHEN I WANT TO TAKE A 20 MOMMY ITS NOT FAIR MOMMY HE MADE ME ROLL DICETaking 10/20 is for menial low risk shit in spirit. OP is mad that he cant take 20 a whole dungeon
>>98196753>playing post-1996 dnd
Taking 10 or 20 is supposed to simulate repeatedly trying a thing until you succeed with an eventual critical success. In Cyberpunk, you can't roll again unless the circumstances significantly change, so a roll of 13 for Perception will stay the same regardless of how much time you spend searching a room for example. That's the solution I prefer.
Isn't the Take 20 problem solved by actually keeping track of things like rations and torches and so on? To say nothing of the world beyond the dungeon existing in time, too. If the party has nothing constraining them and nothing else they need to be doing, and nothing threatening them as they continue loudly dicking around in every room, then Take 20 spam is the ultimate flashing neon symptom of some problem in the game being run, no?
>>98196775I'm confused though.Taking 10 is only possible under no pressure, and taking 20 is only possible with no pressure and takes 20 times as long.A dungeon can absolutely be written around supporting this kind of thing, and I'm not sure why the Creator is acting like it is such a big deal for people too play using the game rules that he himself is creating for. This is even more interesting when you consider that the world's largest dungeon isn't even a particularly good or challenging creation, it's entire gimmick is simply taking up large amounts of space and time. With the gimmick being its size, you think that the Creator would not be so uptight about people wanting to speed things up slightly
>>98196801Once more, this problem could be solved by playing BX or a similar old school dungeon crawler that actually supports playing in the dungeon
>>98196753>If the players are doing too well, just make everything harder by arbitrary means!Increasing DCs, penalties for environmental hazards, and enemies carrying more deadly weapons are all completely justified to combat PC power creep, but just creating extra traps, making things impossible to find, or just telling them No with no reason other than you're mad they keep succeeding checks is petty and retarded.
>>98196808Some people eat shit too and think its fine.
>>98196800>In Cyberpunk, you can't roll again unless the circumstances significantly change, so a roll of 13 for Perception will stay the same regardless of how much time you spend searching a room for example. >I search the room. I rolled an 8.>>You don't find the thing.>Hm, well the NPC said the thing was hidden here. I'll ask him again.>>The NPC says it's definitely in there somewhere.>Okay, I'll search again.>>No.lmao cool system
>>98196753Did this image ruin your session somehow? If not, get the fuck over yourself. If so, find a new group, then get the fuck over yourself. You baby bitch faggot.
>>98196895>get the fuck over yourself.>find a new group>get the fuck over yourself.you're not my dad.
>>98197604>you're not my dadNo shit.A whiny little bitch like you would be sent to boot camp to beat the gay out of you.
>>98197687>sending a faggot to a camp full of dudesInteresting parenting decision.
This is such a non-issue, just know if you're rolling against probability or uncertainty>i try to remember what the wizard said the password was (5) while actively fighting off goblins and... oh no i failed. >can i try again? No, the check was to see if i remember and i didnt. Its settled now, theres nothing to retry>i know the password is in the book, i skim a chapter to find it. Can i take 20 to skim every chapter UNTIL i find it? Of course, because its in there SOMEWHERE
>>98198069>player knows a thinghe succeeds.
>>981967533 is just the default rules. I'm pretty sure you can only take 10/take 20 in 3.x when you're uninterrupted in conditions where you can concentrate. The fact this is specified as an exception does not give me confidence the writer understands the rules.
>>98198112It's the World's Largest Dungeon, the people who made it had no idea what the fuck they were doing.
Take 10 and 20 were introduced post 3rd edition and are thus anti-Gygaxian. There's a reason these rules weren't included in ACKS.
>>98196753How the fuck does point 6 make any sense? If the PCs find every trap then there are no traps they didn't find.
>>98196753Spamming Take 10 hasn't been a problem for my group since, for some reason, people act like you're wasting time taking a minute to do something when there's absolutely no impact in the game. Means it's done sparingly.I don't know, but it works.
>>98196876Yes. You didn't find it. You tried and didn't find it. Get some help. Slamming your head against the same problem over and over banking on luck should in fact get you nowhere.
>>98196753>Don't like a rule in the game you run? Be a cunt about it instead of just saying no!The fact that he wasted all that text to finally get to the point of 'don't use rules you don't like' tells me that he's a passive aggressive twat who can't just put his foot down in the first place, despite that being an important ability for a GM.
>>98196753You can't take 20 searching for traps though? Take 20 is specifically for no risk from failure, and if you fail to find a trap you risk setting it off.
>>98198289Okay, if you want to be an asshole about it then I guess I'll just fuckin sit there prying up every floorboard and disassembling every piece of furniture in every single room, and then do it again on the way back. This is the game now.>HURR DURR THEN THE MONSTERS KILL YOU!!My next character does the same thing.>T-THEN YOU DON'T GET TO PLAY!!Good.
>>98198289>trying to find something in a room never works if you didn't find it the first time because... IT JUST DOESN'T OKAY?!lmaoI guess all those times I looked for something, and took a while to find it, were just my imagination.
>>98196876You can search again, but your result will stay as 8+modifier unless you DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. (Use a scanner for example.)When you look for keys and you don't find them on a shelf, do you think they'll magically appear when you check that shelf 20 times?
>>98198393Based on what tends to happen when I tell my mom to do exactly that when she loses something, absolutely.
>>98198393Not that anon but yeah, that's exactly what happens. Shit just pops into existence out of nowhere.
>>98198393>search a shelf>don't find it immediately>move stuff around, look harder>find thingWOAH:OOOOOOOOOOO
>>98198445>risk several wandering monster checksi'll never understand why D&D dropped game turns.
>>98198483DnD is a dungeon crawler in name only
>>98196876If the macguffin is walled behind a flat dice check, that's a problem with the GM/module rather than the system. That said there's still other ways I can imagine attempting to find the macguffin even if that were the case>hack security logs and review footage>scan for any nearby tech>interrogate an employee/guard
>>98198397How could I forget about that fact of life.
>>98198393>can't find my keys instantly>keys lost forever
>>98196753What system is this for? Because, in 3.5, Taking 10 takes no extra time. It's just "your life isn't on the line so you don't risk choking." And Taking 20 can only be done if there are consequences for failure. It's literally just trying again and again until you get a natural 20, which isn't an auto-success on skill checks or ability checks (AFAIK, the only types of checks that you can Take 20 on in the first place). Both are there primarily to speed up gameplay, so you spend less real life time on the inconsequential shit and more time on stuff with real stakes.
>>98196753Take 10 is great because it sets a baseline for who notices what without calling a roll and Take 20 just replaces the TSR era dungeon-turn search action. You unironically don't understand 3.x if these mechanics get your panties twisted.
>>98196808World's Largest Dungeon is such a dogshit megadungeon. Fuck that piece of shit.
>>98196753People like this are fascinating. It's like they hate the whole fucking game and have no possible way to run it or play it that they'll actually enjoy, but instead of coming to understand that they have the entirely wrong attitude or that they've fully misunderstood the game on a fundamental level (may not even be entirely their fault, as this kind of attitude was forced upon people for decades as the "correct" attitude to have) he just foists his impotent rage at the players and decides that just cheating and fudging will get him the satisfactory outcome he wants, instead of making everyone, especially him, more miserable at the table and less willing to play ever again.
>>98197687>boot camp to beat the gay out of you.Boot camp is where people go to get the gay beaten INTO them, retard.
>>98198772I've nearly killed my players a dozen times this campaign alone just to let them bullshit their way out of dire situations because I'm here for fun, not to kill players literally as an effective god.
>>98196753Since this is third edition we're talking about, that sounds like a direct challenge to the players to make a min-maxed searchmonkey who can find everything even if he rolls a 1 and all the DCs are boosted by 30.
>>98198713agreed yeah>>98196822relevant how, vagueboy?
>>98198551True!My point was more about how I prefer Cyberpunk system's solution to check repetitions being a simple "no".
