how do you guys find people to play tabletop games with? more so directed at rulesets like dungeons and dragons and such.
i'm trying to get into the hobby but there aren't really any hobby stores in my vicinity irl that aren't 1h+ away and searching for a game online is a pain with how fragmented it seems to be.

For me? It was always getting my friends to play. Usually by bribing them with free food, snacks or beer. I also lived in the middle of nowhere for most of my teen years, so the “local game store” was a good three hour drive give or take. I knew enough people though, so atleast three or four would actually become long time players. But yeah that’s your best bet, online is 50/50 lots of troons and morons out there.

the people i know irl are all unfortunately can't abstract well enough to play a character and i can just sense that playing with them would be a pain.
another thing i noticed looking for tables online is that there are people like actually doing paid sessions?? wtf like they are paying money to the dm so they can play. is it just me or is this extremely weird and ew

This. It can be a bit suffering, of all my friends only one is a true dedicated player, the rest are flaky and only want to play when it takes their fancy. I can't grumble because I make for a terrible player too.
Your other option is solo play.
I once made a LFG post in one of the generals here and said I didn't want to play with SJWs and half the thread had a bitch fit about it.

Have you looked at /tg/-adjacent hobbies in your area like historical re-enacting and the like?

Also, a lot of universities will have game clubs if you're a student.

Online games get swamped by lazy flakes and weirdos who can't find IRL groups. But I did make some good friends when I GMed a Discord-based game during the lockdown.

Once you've got some experience under your belt you'll give off an aura and random people will clock you as a gamer.

Another random thought is that people are really protective of their free time these days. Afraid of making a commitment to something they won't like. So I always like to propose one-shots to test out potential players and treat them like small parties(eg playing Call of Cthulhu and watching a horror movie to celebrate Halloween.

Yeah, most people just don't have the attention span and imagination to enjoy games. I think this is where Hasbro/Wizards goes wrong, they seem like they expect normies to start playing which would quintuple their profits.

I go to the tabletop game place at the time when games happen and talk to the people there about games. This is wargames though, for RPGs I talk to the people I play wargames with.

Maybe try wargames? Battletech is cheap and if you like middle aged men you will make lots of friends.

And thats why social media and videogames got so popular. Better solo options or easier group finding.
