What really is difference between Wizards and Sorcerers? Not talking about DnD classes
>>98211104A wizard is just a "very wise man" like a scholar. The word does not inherently denote magical ability, but you can understand how a many who is extremely well read in a wide variety of seemingly esoteric subjects would seem almost magical.A sorcerer is someone who practices sorcery, which is a fancy and mangled word for "casting lots" or "practicing divination" like a fortune teller. Sometimes considered a dark art because man is not meant to know the future or attempt to interfere with God's plan, I suppose.
>>98211104If you are not talking about D&D then none.
>>98211104"Woman" vs Woman
>>98211104Literally what setting? The only thing you can say in general terms is that sorcerer tends to be a darker word than wizard.
>>98211104Outside of DnD? Depends on the setting, as they're not at all consistent with each other. Whatever you want them to be I guess.
>>98211104>Not talking about DnD classesThen it's up to the person/people who made the game you are talking about. If you aren't talking about a specific game, this means the difference (or lack thereof) is up to whoever makes their game.Wizards and sorcerers are fantasy concepts, so they're subject to the imagination of the creator(s) of a work. You fucking retard.
>>98211104A wizard is wise while a sorcerer is a source of magic.
>>98211104Wizards learn spells as Skills with rigid effects in branching prerequisite chains.Sorcerers develop spells as innate highly-flexible highly-customizable Powers.>system?GURPS
>>98211104>lust-provoking polygons
>>98212137I like how GURPS takes the idea that D&D started with "wizards vs sorcerers" but, y'know, actually makes them meaningfully different. Like, "night and day" different. Like, the difference between a wizard and a sorcerer in GURPS is like the difference between playing a mage in Shadowrun and a mage in Mage: The Ascension. Like playing an entirely different game.
>>98211104Sorcerers are hot and appeal to my cock

>>98211104What game then retard?
>>98211104In real life the answer is that one word descends from Latin through French and the other descends from German through English. It's one of those cow and beef things.
>>98211104Wizards are the scientists of old, using unknown natural laws in order to produce weird and possibly dangerous effects. No magic required even if things they do might be considered as such by commoners.Whereas sorcerers are actually magic and have probably made a pact with the devil or such. Pyre cleanses such foul beings.
>>98211104They're synonyms.
>>98212328>gwen tennyson.png
>>98211104Wizard is made up Wiz- meaning wise and -ard meaning have the specific condition usually negative. Wizard original meant someone smart but later took on the mean of a magical person.Sorcerer is the english form of sortiarius made up sort- meaning fate and -arius a suffix that means an agent of. Sortiarius was used exclusively to mean a fortune-teller.

>>98211104In a literal sense, there is no meaningful difference, other than "sorcerer" and "sorcery" have a slightly more menacing undertone. But>in my settingthe difference is largely the same as in D&D in that sorcery refers to inborn magical effects, whereas wizardry is a largely taught skill for gigabrains. The expression of "Sorcerers" depends on bloodlines and the like, and entail discrete magical mutations and abilities that are considered arcane in nature; a dragon's fire breath would be considered a base form of sorcery, for example.Wizards, by contrast, exploit higher math and an innate connection to the substructure of the universe in order to achieve desired effects. They do this by rote memorization and a practice of faceting their mind into memory palaces that contain these hyperdimensional formulae; once expended by "opening the door" and finishing the ritual, the calculations unravel and impose themselves upon the world. The distinction is completely irrelevant to most people in-universe, and by-and-large only wizards and other learned are aware of it. To everyone else its just magic.
>>98211104>SorcererA catch-all term for a person who practices Sorcery.>WizardA Sorcerer who has forsaken their humanity in pursuit of limitless power and transcendent knowledge. They inhabit nested spaces called Towers where their practice their black arts, and which have been specially adapted to suit their twisted and malformed bodies.
>>98211104There is none.
>>98211104Sorcerer originates as oracle or fortune-teller with a cultural grouping shared with demon summoning and evil illusions and mind magic.Wizard originates as wise men and men of secret knowledge. It has a cultural grouping with alchemy, sigils, science, and medicineEffectively they are the same, but sorcerer gives a feeling of mystery and charm, while wizard gives a feeling of wisdom and power

>>98220004Fortune Teller and Scholar are not effectively the same thing, man.
>>98211104Connotation. For example in Polish, the word for a wizard (czarodziej) could be translated literally as someone doing spells, which depending on your stance on how people percieved magic and shit in ye olde timeth might be seem as neutral connotation. Meanwhile a sorcerer (czarnoksiężnik) is someone casting black (spells), so he's seen as an evil fellow for sure
