Do the different proprietary “sponges” used in the miniature painting specific wet palettes like army painter’s and redgrass feel/work demonstrably different to any other normal sponge? Was looking at the Masterson palette for its size and price but the sponge looks like a simple thin…sponge. Wasn’t sure if the fancier ones being different material actually mattered. Seems like otherwise the Masterson one is a no brainer
Centurion lost his shield arm during painting base layers... again. Pinning will be a problem since connection area is actually round. Eh...>>98215386From what I found out so far, it's mostly about paper that makes a job in wet palette. In case of sponge you can as well use wipe or paper towels, whatever holding large amount of water to supply the paper itself.
>>98215386The type and thickness of the sponge doesn't make a big difference. It mainly affects time between top-ups.
Done my Barbarians.
>>98215418Nice work, they look like fun lads to paint
I didn't realize somebody else had painted the that kitsune model (I hadn't painted it before, but I liked it when that other guy did).I've been looking for a kitsune model I like off and on, but haven't really found one that tickles my fancy. I kinda like the one from Nerikson, but it's a bit oversculpted imo.
>>98215386It's a sponge.
I've seen some good level painters here so I'm going to ask for tips. I bought the newer kill team for sisters of battle. I know nothing about the lore since I've always painted fantasy models and don't usually like sci fi but a few friends told me they look fun to play so here comes my biggest mistake. I decided to paint the armor white following a few tutorials online, using mainly contrast and highlights. The thing is they look fucking awful and I'm dreading the whole painting process to the point that if I had to start painting them all over again, I'd throw the models in the bin. I've seen damage effects done on armor, but always on red, blue, black and never in white. Or at least never in white while also looking decent. Can you guys give me some advice on adding rust or damage effects? I'm guessing using a sponge and thin lines with a brush but which color to use? My mind tells me brown or ochre but I don't want to fuck up the process for good
>>98215440Which one you refer to?
>>98215448And? Things can be made with varying degrees of quality. Once you stop buying Amazon Basics for everything in your life you’ll understand
>>98214174Thanks!And yeah I kitbashed ten vanvets months ago out of a box of ETB sternguards and a box of sword brethren with some old vanvet bits thrown in haha
>>98215498Oh I was looking at this>>98206276 in the collage but I think they were from the same person since the other jaina model was long with it. I just thought I remembered that person painting the kitsune's robes white, not red and was used to them looking bigger.
>>98215549Well, I also painted another kitsune but it was a miniature for Eldfall Chronicles game but she indeed had white robes.
Another halfling conversion wip, I've gotten quite a few done in the past little while, will share some more later. At about 9 uniquely posed handgunners. This guy still has a lot of work to do, he's gonna get his little legs chopped off and surgically reattached to sell the really committed pose I'm trying to capture here. Going for that shoulder drop head on charge, full 240 degree swing at a 75 degree angle. You know, just like the little bastard is throwing himself into the enemy line as hard as he can and leveraging his short stature like a fulcrum to create the strongest swing. I've sort of tilted him here in this picture so you can see the spirit of what I'm going for with this one. But the legs need to be rearranged slightly to create a more natural flow to the posing, so that will be fun. These halflings are actually the first plastic conversions I've ever done and have slowly evolved in sophistication as I have experimented. I had slightly modified some metal figures here and there in the past, just like a weapon hand swap, stuff like that. So it's been interesting approaching it and learning it. If you want to get into extensive conversions, I highly recommend this kit. The short stature and length of limbs means re-articulating them with minimal sculpting and cutting (relatively), is quite easy when compared with a full size subject at this scale.Hope everybody is doing well and I wish you all a good week. Keep up the great work, don't beat yourself up, and don't take criticism to heart or personally. Just create and engage on your terms in a way that makes you happy or that you enjoy.
Lil picture of the side of the table re arranged as a peg board. If the MDF stops holding them well, you just stick some sticky tack in there and your back in action. It's good practice to tilt them angled slightly up, and if you have a wire bender, give a little crimp up near the end.so when they're bumped it doesn't knock anything down. Also, cap your knives, lol
>>98215561Maybe I'm mixing them up in my memory.I just want like a 75mm wholesome shrine maiden foxgirl showing a little bit of tasteful cleavage. Is that so much to ask! TheThe one in the OP/other-post with the red robes is definitely the closest so far that I've seen.
>>98215386AP and Redgrass sponges are literally fish tank cleaning cloth that you can find at any aquarium shop
How do I bring myself to paint.
>>98215585If you are actually interested, I got her from here: https://emp3d.pl/pl/searchquery/amaterasu/1/full/5?url=amaterasu
>>98215621just do it.Failing that, put on a ~40 minute 90s space opera, watch 2 episodes per day, and paint while you do that.I recommend B5 to start.
>>98215621what I am trying now is is get a simple model, pick 5 paints based on a cool picture you like, and paint with just those paints. And try and finish the model relatively quickly. I'm a little overwhelmed by my main on-the-go projects right now and this is keeping me painting even if it's not the most productive for my real work it's better than doing nothing.
speaking of wet palettes, a bit of a newbie to using one and finding that sometimes when I go and swirl my paint around, maybe mixing colors, the pool of paint I made will rapidly constrict into a bunch of lines and dots. is that a case of too much water in the sponge underneath or something else? it's weird because it'll be a thick paint like Citadel that I just put on the palette and as soon as I pull from the bead of paint i made it's doing it without any added water or medium
>>98215621First step is always the hardest, don't think, just do and momentum will carry you forward
>>98215691Too much water in the sponge, and you might still have water in your brush after rinsing. Need to really wick it out on a piece of paper towel after rinsing so that you don't add extra water to your mix on the palette.
Okay, I guess it's enough for today, fixing metallics and adding washes next time. And managed to actually drill some pinning!
>>98215469Mind posting a picture? Would be a lot easier to make suggestions where we can point out where it would make sense.
>>98215866I tried, but I cannot for the life of me take a decent picture. It looks like the white has no work whatsoever and just...plain white. It looks far more blue-ish in person
>>98215930Iphone camera also looks like it's able to detect sub atomic levels of dust particles because it doesn't look as grainy and dusty in person
Just finished this necromancer lady with simps. Still needs a few touch ups.The silver is a bit too bright needing a second layer of black wash and the skulls + hands on the base needs a but more highlighting.
>>98215763NTA, what's the right amount of water to put in a wet palette? i've been putting enough water that it fully absorbs into the sponge and just enough to fill it up to the level of the paper. is that too much?
>>98216070Way too much, fully absorb the sponge but not to dripping.
>>98216070>i've been putting enough water that it fully absorbs into the sponge and just enough to fill it up to the level of the paper. is that too much?Yeah, way too much. You want the sponge saturated then just a little bit more in the tray, so the sponge is wet and there is a thin layer in the bottom of the tray.
>>98216070What wet palette are you using?
>keep second guessing my colors and techniques>never finish my armyman...
>>98216128I feel you man, my high elf army is halfway done and I keep seeing color schemes I like more than mine. Too much of a hassle to repaint everything at this point
>>98215930>I tried, but I cannot for the life of me take a decent picture.1. put a neutral background behind it, like a piece of printer paper. Make it easier for the camera to focus on the mini and not the stuff behind it. 2. lights from above and the front or ideally two lights from above and the front on either side of the mini to help elliminate shadows.3. turn off filters or use a third party camera that doesn't have the filters. Modern phone cameras have all sorts of smoothing shit going on to make the pics look better, but it just muddies what we are trying to see. As for the mini, when you paint white you want to follow a general rule that only 30% or so of the white areas will be white. Since you can't go brighter than white you need to save it for the most extreme highlights and brightest areas. Need to lean heavily into contrast and shadows to make the white pop more, what shadow colors are up to you and depends on what other colors you want to use. You mentioned that it looks more blue, and that works if you want cooler shadows, so a dark blue or blue grey in the shadows to give you the contrast. Warmer white could have browner shadows, or even more purple. I think once you get your other main colors blocked in to give context to the white armor it will look a lot better, and once you get your shadows sorted it will look better again. Every mini has an ugly phase, just need to push past it. I'd focus on either a test model or pushing through on just one of the sisters to completion to work out the kinks on what direction you want to take. What colors are you thinking for the cloth, metallics, and straps?
>>98216155I'm thinking black for the outside of the cloth and red for the inside. Maybe the other way around since there's not much of the inside visible, idk. I always use the same browns for the leather, which is a recipe I love. So I was thinking leather for gloves and straps. And mainly scale 76 necro gold for the metallics. I tend to use elven gold but a brighter gold would look weirder in contrast with the white imo. Also has like a thousand little details. I must say so far it's not being an enjoyable experience. I've painted thousands of points for all types of fantasy armies, I don't know where you guys get the strength to paint so many details for a 2000 point army
>>98216207>Also has like a thousand little details. I must say so far it's not being an enjoyable experience. I've painted thousands of points for all types of fantasy armies, I don't know where you guys get the strength to paint so many details for a 2000 point armyYeah its a killteam thing, they all have lots of little gubbins on them to "make up" for the fact its a limited number of models. As for the colors, with white armor I would shy away from using a lot of black, maybe just as a tertiary color somewhere. Maybe a deep purple inside for the cloth and red for the outside, you can use your purple to deepen the shadows on the red and help connect the inside and outside of the cloth a little bit. Having a warm red for the cloth would also give a nice contrast to the cooler white armor, or even purple cloth or a dark blue. Same as the darker necro gold that you can always highlight up later with your elven gold and a silver for the brightest points. Brown earth tones go well with almost everything and will be nice "neutral" details to help break your other main colors.
Post goblin minis that aren't twin goddess. I want more and different gobbos. Still need to be cute though.
>>98216283>I would shy away from using a lot of blackYeah, outside of the cloth in red and inside in black sounds like a better idea, I'll slap some quick contrast on a test model to see how it looks. Also found out white armor + red and black is actually an official paint scheme for "something something order of something" faction of sisters so it should look decent.I'll post updates if I somehow feel happier with the results
>>98215386I use folded j cloths in mine.
>looking for airbrush advice>some people online advocating for a 1:5 or even 1:10 or 1:15+ paint to thinner ratio>others recommend 1:1 paint to thinnerso which is it
>>98216417depends
>>98215930it looks bad because of the paint texture. if it was smooth it would look fine. also at least in the picture it looks gray not white. what was your process here? sisters have tons of little greebles on them. you painted the whole thing gray but surely you don't intend for all the details to be that color. if it was me I wouldn't even have gone over the parts I intend to be a different final color, unless you are planning on using contrast paints for everything.also to answer your original question if you are trying to show battle damage you should paint the cuts and bullet holes whatever color you imagine the armor material to be under the paint. rust you want to put around areas where water would get trapped like around rivets.really though you just need to fix the texture. if you do it will look fine but if you don't it will look like shit.
>>98215691>thick paint like CitadelEvery citadel paint I own from the last decade is thin and beads up like you describe. They're not a thick brand at all, relative to other hobby paint lines.
>>982164171:1 or close to it if you just want to cover a part with said color1:5+ for glazes, filters, smooth transitions etc
>>98216070sponge soaked but no water visible unless you press down on it.
>>982161551 - Put the background as far behind the model as possible. White printer paper right behind the model will blow the light value out and make for a dark model picture.2 - A single good light from the same direction as the camera is literally all you need. Keeping the background far back avoids shadows being cast on it.
If the model doesn't look decent in a simple photo on your phone, it probably doesn't look that good. You might be lying to everybody else but you aren't fooling yourself.
>>98216292No such thing sadly, there's plenty of goofy or cool goblins out there but twin goddess cornered the market on cute ones

Is Pro Acryl Titanium White a color match for Golden high flow white? I generally prefer PA paints and have heard good things about their whites, but I have heard equally good things about golden high flow white and would like to use them both.
>>98216729They should both just be PW6 and color match perfectly other than the surface finish from the medium maybe being different
>>98215402>Pinning will be a problem since connection area is actually round. Eh...>>98215802This was a constant problem with the old GW ball-and-socket joints on metals. In the future, use a file, knock the top or one of the sides of the pin flat, then pin as normal with some filler in the hole. I usually used a scrap of toilet paper (cellulose instantly goes rock-hard with super glue, you can shape and sand it in a minute or two), or a dot of green stuff or miliput if I needed the joint to be adjustable for a second. It also helps to jig up the joint while the glue is curing. I usually have a beat-up shop rag in my desk that I twist into shape and use to hold up models while they cure
>>98217003You can also use baking soda as a super glue kicker. Sprinkling baking soda on super glue makes it harden immediately, then you let the rest cure as normal while the initial set holds the pieces in place. Once cured you can gently sand any excess baking soda/super glue down level.
>>98216128Fail fast
Just finished painting this malenia figure.Friends bday coming up and malenia is her favourite character. He's not super into details so I didn't go too deep into colours and being a 100% replica of the game version but I am really happy with how she turned out, especially for my first time painting a statute which felt good, will definitely order more ftom etsy to paint.
>>98215930You have to wash the white with a blue or gray to make shadows. I never use pure white as a base coat, always a light gray, wash with a dark grey or pale blue then reapply the light grey and fine highlights of white. You can use other colors to shade too like purple, yellow ochre or even light browns or pinks, depending on what your model needs for contrast colors / complimentary colors.
finally got some work done on the Forgefiend
>>98217078Right, forgot sometime it posts image wrong sidewards, my bad.
>>98217036Water on the glue also works without adding mass or texture.

so we've seen a black one, a red one and a blue one now, who's working on the green one and will the anon doing it add pustules, ichor and tentacles to be on theme? >>98217308>youtubersThey give you the advice that they're paid to give you, not advice to get you where they are, if you ruin your sponge with mold you buy a new sponge sooner, that's what the advertiser wants.Likewise they didn't get to where they are by watching sloptubers telling them what to do.Most of the great artists taught themselves. I have to admit - I'm honestly disgusted by how slow I paint, each mini taking on average 6-8 hours and there is also base making process. I ended up with tons of Infinity minis primed and even more still in pieces and it no longer feel fun. Instead of wondering what fun could I build and/or paint, I instead have a feeling that "no, I should complete this huge backlog instead". And there is no one else to blame but myself for allowing this situation to happen. I don't know a way out - anyone found some?
>>98219400Take a handful of more generic minis and paint those in the basic layer, wash, highlight style. You'll feel a bit better about yourself and it really won't take long at all. >>98221764Both these guys have the same red, just different shadow colors. I prefer how the red on the right looks, but the indigo pulls it pretty dark. Since the other main armor color is black is makes the overall model pretty dark and just didn't look good at arm length. The purple shadow and the red came out a lot lighter and looks better at a distance. I could try another coat of the red on the indigo guy for the midtones but then I'd have another layer of paint before starting the highlights, and the more layers the more likely it is to blend them all together into grey brown mud.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to "Will it reactivate?"Last episode we were trying to find out if gouache can be made water resistant by mixing it with several mediums and varnishes.Today we'll reveal the results, but first, how are our contestants looking right now before the test?
>>98223877Aaand lets go onto the first test!We will take a wet brush and lightly place some strokes from left to right, and then tap the brush on the right area of the initial markAs we can see, both AK ultramatt varnish and AK thinner arent doing so hot!Control is doing what we knew it would do!Slight discoloration on the other contestants but not full on set reactivation to be seen!
>>98223885And for our final and definitive test, we will be taking the same wet brush, but we wont be so gentle now, we are going to scrub HARD, as if we were trying to get rid of unwanted paint! After that, we are going to wipe with a paper towel and see what remains!Seems like both AK ultramatt and AK thinner are down, so is the control! In a weird turn of events, Lahmian, Contrast, and Xpress mediums all withstood the harsh test, and not only that but somehow regained the vibrancy and brightness they initially lost! And that concludes this episode, seems like we can do in fact use gouache for painting miniatures granted we mix it with the proper acrylic medium/varnish!Until next time!
>>98223898>gouache + mediumisn't this just acrylic paint with extra steps? or is the point to have different pigments in a usefull format?

>>98222523It's honestly the most daunting part of the process for me. Specially with tyranid limbs which makes it very easy to accidentally hit the other side of arms that you can't see.

>>98225119So is this post Anon. The discussion of how the culture of the internet has changed and effected the internet. Including this website, therefore this board. Is broad enough to suggest at it being on topic. You can seethe about that all you like. You drawing it out makes it prove my point. Just scroll past if you see something you dislike.Again, you lack social grace. You'll improve because of this interaction though. So good luck.
>>98225144didn't readhope you get the help you need eventually
>>98225144NTA but this isn't the place for that.
>>98225166>Discussing this board isn't the place for discussing this board.Okay Anon.
>>98225085Thanks. If I recall correctly I used a 5mm diameter round punch for those pauldrons and to me even that was a bit too big. Many historical pauldrons I've seen are actually really small. I also use masking tape instead of green stuff to get really thin slices, around 0.1.mm or 0.2mm thick. Even that feels too chunky for some bits like vambraces. But maybe that's caused by me looking at these things for too long from too close a distance.
>>98225184No, what you're doing, the whole "you lack social graces" bullshit. Anyway, done with you.
>>98225184>nooo my thinly veiled shitposting is absolutely on topic and belongs here!you retards sure are funny sometimes
Not quite happy with the hair, but think I'll move on to the snow base and call it done soon. Thin your paints and don't touch the paint while drying I know I did poorly on here. Every time a little better. If anyone has a good anime hair tutorial, would be keen to check it out.
>>98225218I need a better camera
>>98225234I think the highest priority is fixing your lighting, not necessarily the camera.
>>98225234>>98225218>I need a better camerayou need to turn off your flash
>>98225241>>98225246Thanks anons, that's useful. What would you reckon, daylight lamp, room light, or sunlight for photos? I have very little experience with photography, so if you or anyone else knows of a good tutorial for mini photos specifically, would you mind please sharing it?
>>98225260Sunlight is generally pretty good, although it often tints photos blue because of the sky.I just use a well lit room with a small dimmable panel light. This is usually what I recommend, since it's portable, easy to set up, cheap, and usable at night.
>>98225206>A single reply is a shit post because I disagree with it.>Crying about that single post isn't.Yes Anon, you're hilarious.
>>98225260A single large light bulb pointed directly at the model from the same direction as the camera is usually plenty as long as the room isn't completely dark otherwise. The backdrop should be as far back from the model as possible to avoid shadows being cast on it. Don't get too close to the model when taking the photo, aim around 1/3 of the frame.
>>98225293>>98225260picrel is good alsouse a piece of white paper as a back drop
>>98225293Beautiful, thank you! Do you also use a dark backdrop, or is a lighter one better, so that some light reflects back onto the mini?
>>98225304>>98225308Thanks anons, these are great
>>98225309It's totally up to preference.Dark backdrops makes your colours look more vibrant, but a lighter backdrop shows off the details more clearly.Linked here is a reddit post I just found with the same mini, in the same position, on both a black and white backdrop. https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/comments/12w4i41/light_or_dark_background/I prefer a white backdrop, personally.
>>98225321Awesome, thanks so much for the help
>>98225218Better lighting, no flash, paper backdrop
>>98225396And backDone for now, hope you all have a good evening
>>98225402>>98225396obviously not perfect, but wayyyyy better than beforenice work, anon
Hey all! I've decided I'm going to try for a conversion challenge and try to create a Witch of the Westmoreland mini as a stand-in for a mounted damsel. It was relatively easy to find something for the horse part, a glade rider horse should do nicely. But I've been browsing various ranges all afternoon and I can't seem to find anything that would work well enough for the upper body part of the witch. I did find some 3d prints but they all seem a bit too intricate compared to the pretty stripped down glade rider horse - besides I have no desire to build some over-greebled mini, a centaur witch is a cool enough concept by itself that it shouldn't need a million WoW-esque accessories, which a lot of 3d studios seem to love slapping all over everything. Ironically that iconic 5th edition foot damsel would work best, but that's such a cool model I would feel bad butchering it for this, besides it being OOP. Does anyone ITT have any good ideas or pointers?Oh and for the uninitiated: https://youtu.be/Nxls60aYSZA
Got some paint on my psychophage. Blues should be done, lots more flesh. No plan for the smoke (thought it was acid at first and had a coat of fluo pink on there) but I've done worse.
>>98225396I think you're too close still, the camera is only keeping parts of the model in focus not the whole thing.
anyone got recommendations for UV cure resin? and UV lights I guess
>>98225432Reaper has loads of random women in robes and dresses that you can cut in half guilt free
these pro acryl twist caps are so dogshit it makes me question the quality of the paint because nobody who signed off on this design is smart enough to be doing QC on paints. genuinely worse than citadel pots.
>>98225697I agree theyre not the best design but shitadel pots are literally designed to shit the bed and have the paint dry.PA on the other hand are just inconvenient as fuck but at least they do their work.
Shill me your non mini related art channels you like.Mine is a literal who, less than 1k subs:Northumberland Art>inb4 its meI fucking wish I could paint like that, anons, I fucking wish.
>>98225585These are cropped, thr mini is about 1/3 of the photo before cropping. You're right about the focus, though, I tried a few ranges and angles, and couldn't get it to get everything sharp. Thanks anon, I'll give it another shot next time.
>>98225569Nice buggo!
>>98224020It's the binder/medium for guache (and also watercolors) so adding more will thin it out, make it more transparent if for whatever reason you don't like how opaque it is. The point of guache is to be opaque watercolor and so it has a really high pigment to medium ratio
>>98225627Thanks anon, i think this one could work?
>>98225396>>98225402Really nice, dude. I like the colors in that robe.
>>98225697>>98225709They're size 20/410 caps. Monument hobbies offers a few different cap designs, but I just bought some flip tops from amazon. It was like $8 for 30 or something.
>use some contrast paint>so much as breath on it in the first 30 minutes and it peels off and streaks>accidentally get some on the wrong part of the model>fucking chemically welded onto my model, is not coming offevery time i want to give contrast paints another go they piss me off. snakebite leather doesn't even look good.
>>98225419>>98225877Thanks anons <3
What are your guys workhorse paints you come back to most often?
>>98226071AK and golden soflat. I own some proacryl colors i like for the color but not the properties and some about 5 citadel paints that i like but the work horses are the ak and golden.
>>98226071charred brown, bleached bone, blood red and gory red

How’s ProAcryls glaze/wash medium?
>>98226151It's fine. works as advertised. It's nothing magic.
I got some leadbelcher and retributor already what are some other must have metallics? Feel like I need some for highlights but not sure what a good gold highlight is
>>98226071From PA, mohogany, burnt orange, burnt red, payne's grey. And then any single pigment dioxazine violet, a Pyrrole red and orange.I'm leaving out some of the color wheel if I were trying to assemble a full paint set, but the above are the ones I use most.
>>98226310>I got some leadbelcher and retributor already what are some other must have metallics? Feel like I need some for highlights but not sure what a good gold highlight isStormhost Silver and Runefang Steel are good highlights for Leadbelcher or Iron Warriors. Iron Warriors is actually so dark that Leadbelcher itself makes a pretty good highlight - especially if you've also washed it with something like Nuln Oil.Liberator Gold and TTC Glistening Gold are good highlights for Retributor Armour, but, interestingly, a birght silver like Runefang or Stormhost for the highest highlights on gold also works.
>>98226387ok sweet i just picked up some Shining Silver. I never know if copper/bronze type colors are all that necessary
>>98225882just do what I did and get 50 dropper bottles for 1 dollar on aliexpress
Anyone got any interesting basing ideas for Tzeentch models? Starting on my Disciples and I want something more exciting and thematic than just mud or grass.

picked up some Blood for the Blood God, any tutorials on using it you guys like? feels like something that would be easy to overdo
