Is there a way to live in a Hive City that isn't ultraviolent or insane or decadent or deprived? Can you just be a Normie?
>>98216129I think you can live on a Garden World as a normie but a Hive City, no. It's Kowloon Walled City x a million and the industrial and labour base is maximised to such an extent the rest of the world outside the Hives is usually an unsurvivable toxic wasteland. Nobles control the upper Hive where you still get sunlight and gangs and criminals soft-run the lower levels, holding onto power as long as quotas get met and they don't cross the Arbites too often. The "normie" life here is still worse than the least fortunate Foxconn wageslave or Cambodian scam call labour camp. People underrate how shit life in the Imperium really is.
>>98216129Which game are you playing whose challenges can be faced as a normalfag?
>>98216129If there is, it'd be very rare. The average person in a hive city is working grueling hours, be it a factory worker, a scribe, or anything else. Deprived is pretty much the baseline.People in the underhives are going to be deprived on top of ultraviolet/insane, and the upper hives are going to be littered with decadent nobles. The closest thing would probably be a job as a security guard for a noble, since oftentimes that just means you watch a door alongside another guard until a shift change. Probably also some case to be made for maids or other house servants. But ultimately all of that is mostly because the work is relatively light, may involve slightly fewer hours, and at the very least will mean you're sleeping in some servant's quarters which at the very least is in less danger of being robbed by some random hive gang. That's the closest thing you could get to a place in a hive city that someone from modern day Earth would consider a relatively normal life.

>>98216129Yeah, in the middle layer
>>98216129If you want 40k normie life, read Warhammer Crime. Normie life exists but it is harsh, strict, and most people are just trying to keep their heads down and not get noticed by the Enforcers/gangers/Arbites who all will make their lives hell just for existing. Also sixteen hour workdays.

>>98216129depends on the world some of the less shitty hive worlds will have something like a middle class of skilled professionals, senior government officials, successful businessmen, etcon other worlds, the ruling corporations/clans/noble houses are so firmly entrenched that basically everyone's life is shit except the ruling elite and their inner circle they rely upon to maintain power, but even for those guys life is still pretty shit because they are surrounded by the ruthlessly ambitious backstabbers mixed in with a few plain old nutjobs
>>98216129Don't live in the spire or the underhive.
>>98216129Watch Terry Gilliam's Brazil.
>>98216129No idea about hive cities. I find it hard to believe there isn't a semblance of a middle class within it.Other than hive worlds though, you can certainly live as a normie. The Imperium is massive and a lot of its world are relatively autonomous (as long as they pay tributes and vaguely venerate the Emperor in some form) and at wildly different stages of evolution. There are surely planets where life is identical as it is right now on earth, so there are literal normies inhabiting them.
>>98216129No. Even what could be qualified as "living nicely" in the Imperium is saddled with 1984-esque paranoia and neighborly espionage. You can do everything you're supposed to do and still get burnt as a heretic for not covering your mouth when coughing in the presence of a superior.
>>98221160There is a 'middle class' in most hives, mainly the low to mid level guild and Adepta personnel, clerks, tradesmen, mid-level clergy, etc. but the actual level of comfort they enjoy is equivalent to the poverty level lifestyle of current Earth. They have an apartment, some sparse comforts, not much in the way of luxuries or hobbies because they have to work from dawn to dusk just to earn enough cash to not lose it all to debt and meeting their Enforcer extortion fees. They're also not safe from gangs because this level of a hive is still only nominally 'lawful'. Also not safe from random witch hunts wherein your rivals at work are likely to nominate you for 'confession' of your heresies and this means getting burned at the stake whether you confess or don'tAs for non-Hive worlds, while some can be much less cruel and miserable than a hive planet, some are far, far worse. If you want high octane nightmare fuel just read up on Agri-worlds, Mining Worlds, and other industrialized nightmares. If you think Garden and Pleasure worlds are nice, they aren't; if you aren't one of the few wealthy elites living there, your job is to serve them by any whimsy they feel, even up to and including being made a concubine or used in palace hunts as cannon fodder because Lord Inbred III got bored of hunting groxen.
>>98221105the movie had some neat ideas, too bad they're all pushed to the background and central plot is basically "what no pussy does to a motherfucker"
