I used to hear about the "Hunt a Killer" ones as sponsors for podcasts all the time back in the day. Shocking nobody that sounds like it ended up being a bit of a scam selling you bits per month that didn't actually connect up and were totally winging it. But the idea of stand alone boxes intrigues me.

My local store has some but nobody has bought or played them. The idea being a rough 90 minutes where 1- 4 players sit down around a table of evidence both written and physical objects and you check off all the false leads to identify a killer.

Now i'm not quite the target audience that i think would be summed up as "true crime girlies" but me and my friends love call of cthulhu but most over investigative trpgs just can't compare to CoC's variety and level of support but we still want something different now and then y'know? these seem to have a nice balance of mystery, americana and urban gothic a good group investigation at my table loves but all the reviews seem basic bitch "i didnt get it???" type stuff.

Have any of you actually tried any of these? for £15 would you recommend them or are they just a cheap fad item like "escape room boxes"?

I've played Murder at the Movie Theatre and Murder of a Millionaire. Both took about an hour to 90 mins and were diverting, but ultimately simple. If you know how mysteries are written you'll speed run it, if you know how detective work works you'll frown at the limited information (why wasn't this asked, where are the SOC photos) but still go through it without much challenge beyond reading and organising information.
Overall more simply written but less moon logic than an EXIT game box. Grab em if they're on offer.

I've gotten one for my mother for Christmas for the past four or five years, and we've done all of them together. I think only two of them have taken more than one evening, and I might have done them faster working alone, but we've generally enjoyed them. For one of them we did find the ultimate conclusion dissatisfying and, in our opinion, not well-supported by the given evidence--I think that was A Wealth of Murder, but I don't recall for certain--but they've been more hit than miss. I would probably not bother with anything rated lower than 3 stars for difficulty, though.
