Do people like mystery boxes? Is there a right way to implement them?I have some extra scenarios that I don't want to add to a cyoa because they don't mesh with the balance and I'm wondering if I should still add them as a mystery box or DLC or something,
>>98217976
>>98217980
>>98217923Still waiting on the update for this.
>>98217979no true /cyoag/oer will turn down a mystery box. Do as you please with it. They're really underrepresented in the last few years of OC
>>98217923Was a bit late to the last thread so postan it hereHere's the build I've put the most thought into for Luminary (for reference, I have 12 builds total)> Sex:>Male> Outfit:>Armored>Powered> Implement:>Gauntlets/Greaves> Magic Schools:>Spirit (Master)Taken mostly for the extreme passive regeneration as a Master, the utility of being able to shield others is also useful when I am otherwise entirely self-centered with my abilities. Fueling my Outfit with Spirit - in combination with my Tech abilities - would give my armor an enhanced mechanical regeneration, above the slow base inherent to Regalia.>Physicality (Specialty)Alongside my doubly-armored Outfit and Spirit-regeneration, I am a nigh-unkillable fortress, being able to shrug off an entire mountain being dropped on my head, and my Powered Outfit amplification boosting my strength to levels where razing a city block is unreasonably effortless. Fueling my Outfit with Physicality would do the obvious, increasing durability and armor density, boosting raw strength, but also increasing enhancing the effects of my aura, including any inherited from other schools due to my Specialty.>Tech (Adept)Taken specifically to empower and better interface with my Powered Outfit, with the versatility of tinkering up new weapons and devices being a useful side-benefit, mostly used to add new capabilities to my Outfit. Fueling my Outfit with Tech would grant me greater fine control over my Powered Armor, as well as allow me to modify the inner mechanics and attachments of my Outfit on the fly through enhanced technopathy alone.
>>98218059>Celerity (Specialty)Alongside my Physicality, I am the true bodily peak of the Luminaries. The stamina backlash of using my Specialty shifted perception is lessened to almost nothing due to the combination of my Powered Outfit boost and the inexhaustibility bestowed by my Specialized Physicality, leading to me being in such a state for most of the fights I participate in. Fueling my Outfit with Celerity would boost the deployment time of any of my Outfit’s tools and attachments to near-instantaneous, as well as boosting my Specialty mechanical precision to a degree that enemies - at least human ones - would accuse me of using an aimbot, tracking enemies and their weak points with an inhuman consistency.> Quirks:>Complex OutfitThe addition of Armor raises Powered’s power armor into something approaching a miniature mechsuit, practically encapsulating me fully within mechanical components and thick plate.>Large ReservesAlongside Physicality’s inexhaustibility and my Nocturnal Quirk, I can fight nigh-on forever.>NocturnalWhat’s the point of being inexhaustible if I have to sleep at some point nonetheless?)> Ultimate Art:>ContinuousEmpowers my Outfit, its internal mechanisms shifting and armor expanding until a section entirely splits off from myself to create a secondary, independent robotic companion. As it uses materials that were once - and to a degree still are - part of my Outfit, my personal stats and capabilities minorly diminish. In recompense, my robotic duplicate possesses the same abilities I do; Together, we are much greater than I am alone.> Patrons:>GaiaOn the off chance that something is able to pierce my overwhelming defenses, Gaia’s primary means I survive anyways, ensuring that I learn of my weakness to make sure it does not happen twice.
>>98218065>Ste’veI am already beyond the peak physical capabilities of a Luminary; Berserker rage will make sure that if my peak isn’t enough, that I can surpass even that, destroying anything and everything in my path. Alongside my Ultimate Art, the two of us get boosted to equalling if not fully surpassing the might of a non-Continuous Ultimate.>Old Bone-MotherI can already penetrate most defenses purely through overwhelming brute force applied at speeds faster than nearly anyone can visually register. With Her primary, truly nothing can resist my fists and feet.> Occupation:>Enforcement> Contacts:>Apollyon>Marie>Sylka> Missions:>Product RecallUse Spirit-infused Physicality Aura to make my hits nonlethal to organic people - though they may be grievously injured, but the same Spirit-aura can easily heal them up afterwards - and then just use extreme strength to disintegrate the mechanical devices/implants with a single punch to the face.>Abyss SpawnThey can hunt me all they like, organized assaults don’t mean shit if it’s done by underlings that have no hope of piercing my defenses in the first place. I’ll just turn them all into a fine spawn pâté on my way to a good fight against the head honcho.>Death Squad CleanupWhile my Continuous-companion more closely protects the targets, I can get up close and personal to the corpro asskissers before they can blink, and give them a taste of my foot by way of their rectum.>Oil Rig RitualI smash the oil rig supports until the entire thing collapses under its own weight. Job done.>Hunting HorrorsAs a Celerity Specialist, I’d like to see this thing try and outmaneuver me; and for an advantageous battlefield? Lure it into the bottom floor of a skyscraper, and collapse the entire building on top of us. If it can survive that, then maybe it’ll be a fair fight.
>>98218070>Maddened SisterFinally, a fair fight. While it is a tragedy that a sister was driven to such insanity, I will relish the chance to go all-out against someone who is close to my equal.>Leyline SabotageIt’ll be fun to pit myself against the peak of a corporation’s magical defenses. I doubt I’d even need to directly destroy any equipment that would be the most heavily guarded; instead, just breach the defenses enough to get past the outer walls and shielding, and use my Specialty Physicality abilities to focus the equivalent of a city block’s worth of destructive capability into the internal volume of the Hub/bunker.>Corrupted SpillAs much as it would be a worthy challenge to slay the beast myself, the knowledge that others will be able to if I can hold it for long enough means I can channel all of my reserves and abilities into being utterly impenetrable and unassailable.

>>98217979I always feel compelled to pick the mystery box... Then usually i feel bummed out because it is kinda lame.
>>98218380To me the mystery box represents something out of left field, or outside the normal scope of the setting of The cyoa. Used to hide departures in verisimilitude, or wacky what if scenarios that the normal options don't cover it all.
>>98217979I think they're alright if it's there to give an alternative to main choices. Like if cyoa is about picking a god, mystery box could be what happens if you reject them all.
>>98218108>also I was wrong it's only 11, but stillLooks like you've got to make one more

>>98218512I was thinking of taking the same core upgrades, but double territory enhancement scared me a bit.
>>98218627We'll that is why I specified powerful enough, you need to make it strong enough that she can't tank it. Which is probably impossible to do on one's own but with powerful enough rituals and magic items sounds doable.
>>98217979Mystery box as dlc sounds good, can provide a new and interesting way to replay it
>>98217979>do people like mystery boxesI generally dislike them, but some anons do appreciate them.>is there a right way to implement themPartially, but there is also a right kind of cyoa for mystery boxes.Ones that are made entirely of mystery boxes are obvious, but shorter cyoas can also benefit since they don't have as much replay value to begin with. What you really, really shouldn't do in a long-ish cyoa is have a mystery box that negates the previous pages entirely. That's always frustrating.
>>98218673But even if you did she'd tank it
>>98218699>can provide a new and interesting way to replay itThere's a magic book store (power picker) cyoa where the author did multiple mystery boxes. So whomever posts it can decide whether to post the good or bad one.

>>98218590>How do you beat Apollyon? She's a classic tank build - strong offense, top notch defense. But that's all she's got. So how do people beat warrior-types? Exotic magic, subterfuge, and politics. Use Binding or Psychic to rewrite her personality, Space to teleport her off world, Earth to bury her alive, or Time shift her to another era. Or get the Light to transfer her somewhere far away. She's not a rogue, so she'd have to listen.Or just make sure she never realizes the two of you are enemies. >>98218723Her trying to tank it is the best situation as it would result in her death. Much bigger problem if she tries to dodge it something as then you need to pull some time and space bullshit to even hit her.
>>98218866But it wouldn't kill her
>>98218669Why would it scare you?
>>98218895Well of course, someone of your capabilities would never be able to imagine or devise a method of killing her, but other individuals are far more powerful and knowledgeable and would be able to kill her. It's simply a matter of not being a jobber.
>>98218907Makes it much easier for paladins to randomly find it.It's also true my base was underwater, so I don't know wether that's too big of a risk.
>>98218590Wouldn't bioshifting kill her with a touch?
>>98218940I don't care about paladins finding my base. In fact, its basically advertised.
>>98218941No, everyone magical has corresponding magical resistance so you will never be able to do something like that, and bioshifting cannot harm through touching them fast enough anyways.
>>98218947Fair enough, I'm a coward so I hid as far as I could from everything, but to be fair I'm at Scar.>>98218952Ok, missed that and honestly asked to see if someone could help me understand why that was wrong, as it seemed just dumb.
>>98218767>Use Binding or Psychic to rewrite her personality, Space to teleport her off world, Earth to bury her alive, or Time shift her to another era.None of that is possible except for maybe burying her, which she will just break out of by virtue of that doing literally nothing to her except maybe buying you some time as she breaks/blasts her way out.
>>98217690But anon, the good thing is that you don't have to be a girl. I will give you the option to be a man. The best kind of man. A feminine, cute little trap of a man who is devoid of any masculine traits and who will constantly get mistaken for being a girl. pic realted>>98217968I have such mixed feelings about this CYOA. If it didn't force you to play it as a RYOA it would have been so fucking good and I would have made an image build for it long ago.
>>98217979>Do people like mystery boxes? Is there a right way to implement them?I don't like how they are traditionally implemented because the interesting thing about them, which is that you are taking a wild chance at getting something that you don't know what it is. Loses all of its replay value once you have played through the CYOA and seen the mystery box once. This is why I think Mystery Boxes should be a dice table that you roll on instead, pic very realted. That way the mystery box will still retain some of it's risk reward value.
>>98219120
Just finished my exam and got a wayy better grade then I deserved, im so happy/relieved. So I should be able to start working in the OC mines again.
>>98219245And what will you make? A 13-page CYOA? That would make it the longest CYOA in existence. But also the best CYOA because everyone knows that the longest CYOAs, which are 12-page CYOAs, are the best. Because bestness is tied to page count. More pages is more bestness.

>>98219282>Two quick onepagers and then ill work on my idea for an odysee cyoa. You have said you believe long CYOAs to be the best. In making short CYOAs, you are choosing to do something that you yourself believe makes your CYOAs worse. You prioritize your own laziness before your ideas of what would make the best CYOA possible. I disagree with many different CYOA authors about what makes a CYOA good or other CYOA practices, but I respect them and their differences of opinion as long as they seek to follow their own convictions and stay true to their ideas. Like I hate remakes, but I still respect Aromage as an author for she believes remakes are good, she keeps remaking her old CYOAs in an attempt to make them th,e best she thinks they can be, and she stays true to her own beliefs and convictions. When she makes CYOAs she seeks to make the best possible CYOA she can. You, however, don't do that, which is why you are not an artist and not worthy of my or anyone's respect. I don't recognize you as a CYOA author because you don't fulfill the bare minimum of being one. Which is to always try your best when you make CYOAs. It does not matter if your best is pitiful as long as you gave it your all, but you don't do that.
>>98219276Such is a jobber defeatist mindset if you don't even try to defeat your enemy you shall never win. If there is no know method to killing someone invent a new one.
>>98219282>Also wasnt your magnum opus dragon fall also 10 pages?Artists evolve, and their concept of perfection along with it. I once believed that the best CYOAs would be shorter than 10 pages. So I limited myself to 10 pages. But I have change my mind on that. There are too many great CYOAs that are beyond 10 pages and so I have expanded my ideal page count limit to a generous 15 pages, as I have not seen any good CYOA beyond that number of pages.
>>98219336>as I have not seen any good CYOA beyond that number of pages.Luminary?
>>98219336JRPG traitor
>>98219344>Luminary?There are too many fucking CYOAs named that. The magical girl CYOA named Luminary is clearly the best CYOA named Luminary, and it is 8 pages.Husanon's Luminary is 20 pages, and I did not like it. Too much bloated unnecessary filler, which is the real problem with long CYOAs. I also strongly disliked the mechanics of the CYOA. The CYOA incentivised you to go as wide as possible and not specialize in anything since your potential allowed you to level up everything eventually. I prefer crystalized power, power that does not change and you get what you get, no to very little improvment that can be made after you get your powers. You can use them in clever and creative ways, but you can't level them up and make your power stronger. Unless it's integrated in the CYOAs mechanics, like I love the potential system of the Wizard CYOA.
>>98218789This. If you need anything else you're not a true man.
>>98219351Too long, and too much bloat. I also heavily dislike events and quests in CYOAs. I much prefer a openended character creator that introduces me to the world and let me make up my own adventures. Forced predetermined events is a huge turn off for me. I also dislike goals as a section, in this case goals had some mechanical value in the form of granting tokens so it is done in a good way, but generally I hate such sections as they are completely pointless and sometimes you limit the goal of the player to a fixed number of goals that does not include the goal the player had in mind.

>>98219434Ooooh right, my mistake. I never played the remake. I was happy with the original when it came out, and it gave me a unique experience I cherish so much that I would not like to tarnish it with playing the remake. To me, Outer Reincarnation took place with me as Paarthurnax, the irresponsible younger brother of Paxia, the Queen of Dragon King's Realm. With Left Hand Lizard as my left hand and the friends and enemies I meet along the way. Including Draco Sue, Iscariot, Strongman, Magnus the Greatest Mage, Olev the beloved son, the ordinary peasant named Peasant, the wandering uruk scholar La Erudita, and the much-beloved Support Spider. I would not trade that adventure for anything. I truly detest remakes.
>>98219567>I truly detest remakes. You loved reddit’s Witch remake you son of a bitch hypocrite
>>98219439>PPPP but in real lifeSee you in a few millenias.
>>98219567It's not a remake it's an update all the old stuff remained they just added more choices to the existing sections and more sections in general.
>>98219567I can respect that, the update never reached the same peak as the original. Even if it was a great overhaul.
>>9821960720 pages is too long for me to care at this point. It is almost double the original size in pages and a completely different experience from the original.>>98219599>You loved Reddit’s Witch remake, you son of a bitch hypocriteThey took a 1 page CYOA and "remade" it into a billion page CYOA. It's not even a remake at that point. It's a completely different CYOA. It's a CYOA that is inspired by a 1 page CYOA. It's not a remake.
>>98219644So the original was better than the update?
>>98219792I enjoyed the update more, so it was better.
>>98219792the update was definitely better added a lot more juicy lore and expanded on the outsider fate mechanics. Not to mention there were a lot of new interesting powers.
>>98219792Wrong way to see it, the update was a world expansion/dlc.The original caused the split, i guess the amount of anons that enjoyed it, moved on, even from mcyoag. Or felt that they got enough enjoyment out of the first iteration, to not have to thread the same path again.

>>98219933why not? what are? where? huh?
>>98219933Less anonsCyoag is dyingAlso anons are lamer and lazier now
>>98219933considering how it broke through 1k post mark many times in a row, it was probably more popular than the original
>>98219933builds were allocated into dozen instances so the activity was fractured (and builds with popular picks got shifted alone into cuck timelines), while the original run ignored the lame rule and formed a big glorious mess
>>98219657>They took a 1 page CYOA and "remade" it into a billion page CYOA. It's not even a remake at that point. It's a completely different CYOA. It's a CYOA that is inspired by a 1 page CYOA. It's not a remake. You are sickening. You are a hypocrite.
>>98219933Mass appeal is not the same as quality. Because the masses are lazy with a low attention span, why do you think reddits most popular cyoas are 1 pager pill slops. Then you also have to consider the population decline of cyoag. But if you consider the engagement it was probably the most popular cyoa on this thread in recent time, I don't think that anything matched it. Its cult following continues to this days with random outer reincarnation posters.
>>98219327No he said the "longest" cyoas are the best ones, not that long cyoas are inherently better. You're overthinking it and allowing wodan too much space in your mind.

>>98220103contest or regular cyoa
>>98218770I like it a lot ( >>98218858 was me ). But if I had to criticize Luminary:>1The day job is talked up to be as important as the magical fighter job, but it's not well integrated into the rest of the cyoa. All the quests are about magical fighter jobs, and most of the schools of magic are useless for the day job, the companion sections never references the day job, etc. Also, if you're supposed to carry your Soul Gem with you even on your day job, can't the corpos unmask you with a simple body search? And everybody without the Shrouded Magic quirk gets methodically found out on their day job? So I don't think the masquerade aspect works out well either.>2There's a lot of overlap between the usecases of the magic schools, and the stages of a single school are too continuous. IMO Beri's magical girl cyoa did that part really well - the different elemental schools (and the substages within them) felt functionally distinct, so even the decision of "will I get 1 more level of this school, or 1 more level of that school" would alter the build's nature significantly.>3I don't like how the factions go strictly from stronger to weaker. I haven't read the other builds, but isn't there's too much to push for the player to join the Old Guard as the one team where everyone's knowledgeable and competent and well-organized? I'd have liked more companions also (although I realize many other magical girl cyoas (Accidental Magicl Girl, Beri's, BTG's if it counts, had no companions at all so I may be acting spoiled).

What do you think about this idea for a CYOA.Basically pokemon but instead of collecting monsters you are collecting waifus to fight similarly to league of legends. You are a Planeswalker kind of guy and you travel to other realities making pacts with waifus to help them with some goal or to grant them a wish and in exchange they become your followers that you can summon to fight for you against others like you in a multiversal scale conflict. It might or might not use IP characters depending on how people feel about it.

>>98220810If no one knows about this weakness the name one is probably best, because how often does anyone actually say a full name, but these things have a tendency of somehow being discovered. That fucker Giles would be in his library somewhere and just somehow have it in a book.I'd be curious if the weapon weakness is rolling timeline or not as that would really change up it's usefulness. Is it any weapon crafted before 1826? Because as time goes on less and less weapons will survive. Or will old AK-47s be able to kill me after enough time has passed, because if so that's bad.

If 200 before 2026, it's better but not guaranteed if an attacker is motivated enough.Blessed item is a trap, you're giving ~90% of the population an easy mean to kill you.Sea is the best if you don't travel beyond your home continent. Otherwise an accident could kill you.Name can be good if you manage to bury your identity, but with how tech is advancing it wouldn't surprise me if it becomes impossible in the next decades. >>98221068There's a difference in 'friends' and 'acquaintances', though you would be an asshole who shoots down friendships. It would not be living in fear but rather an insurmountable wall with the rest of humanity. If it's an unconscious thing, you could psyche yourself to not consider other people your friends, if it's a declaration thing, just avoid it (even if you would be considered an asshole). In any case, friends who are friends don't stab friends.

>>98220810you really need to consider which of the options will allow you to suicide in case you ever get stuck in a situation worse than death. Like what the fuck are you going to do if they just decide to dump you in the ocean or burry you underground? You might just be stuck there until the planet explodes... just forever starving and suffocating. Getting crushed, frozen, etc. The one day a year might just save you from all that suffering.
>>98221132But what if everyone goes to hell when they die, and the pain there is worse than the pain here? There's no way to be sure. Better to be safe than sorry.
>>98221038You're assuming that the terms of your invincibility become public knowledge, IMO that's extremely unlikely unless you make it public yourself. The conditions are so arbitrary, there's no base of immortals with arbitrarily defined immortalities from whom to infer anything about you. So I'm not worried about "if an attacker is motivated enough" and "giving ~90% of the population an easy mean to kill you" kind of scenarios that assume this knowledge.About the 200 year old weapons, I interpreted it as meaning 200 before 2026, but I agree it could be interpreted both ways.
>>98221132If you are truly immortal you don't have situationsThe expected value of your continuing to live is always the same, regardless of circumstancesYes, you might be stuck underground for 10,000 years, but you will statistically spend 1,000,000,000 years doing other shit before the sun burns out and you have to find a new planetIt literally doesn't matter what is happening to you or what you are doing, your future remains entirely homogenous and unchanged by the blip that is the present
>>98221224> before the sun burns out and you have to find a new planetYeah this is the big problem with true immortality, the whole 'heat death' thing.
>>98221236You are a source of infinite energy. Just beat entropy and it'll be fine
>>98221222They could be easy enough to find, your invincibility comes from a 'mighty being' and 'blessed weapons' and 'full legal name' are common examples of hurting demons.Nothing is made explicit, but it doesn't mean that you are the only person who knows about it. >>98217979I dislike mystery boxes mechanically as you can only truly open it once and that kills replay value which is what separates the CYOAs I come back to from for others by definition. A lot of people do like them though. I think the best mystery boxes offer a choice that is an extreme divergence from the rest of the cyoa and is build defining. Something like the opportunity to join the antagonists the rest of the cyoa was empowering you to fight. As an anon mentioned if this is done poorly it can invalidate other choices but done well it can generate really good discussion. I would like to point out that this could be done without the "locked in" mechanic that I dislike. You could offer a dramatic choice at the end of a cyoa without hiding it.

I remember some time ago there was a cyoa about an infinite dungeon from reddit, and thinking about it, it's strange how much "Infinite" seems to lessen a worldBecause "Unthinkably large but finite" Feels so so much better then "Infinite", in that one, despite it's size, is simply a challenge to be beaten, and the other, due to it's endless nature, is uninteractable and unchangeableHow do you feel about infinite things?because I hate them.It should be big and there should be a non-descript beyond that doesn't matter
>>98222994
>>98223010>How do you feel about infinite things?I don't meaningfully care about them because I'm never going to see the endpoint of the finite things either - they might as well be infinite to me. It's all the colors that I can see and experience that matters, not the gray featureless non-descript gray frontier.
>>98223010Loosely the same.

>>98221525Just the name. Never read it.
>>98223010I hate them because it makes me feel insignificant and I play cyoas to be someone.
>>98223033Go back with your spandex and capes lil bro. This is a place for grown ups.
>>98223040
>>98223010I don't like it because having an infinite world doesn't really add anything, and there's never much of a point to it. It's like having a multiverse, which is another thing I hate.
