Thread to appreciate the fighter class and its subclasses.

I always play a female fighter with a sword and shield in every game no matter what. I will not stop.

Why are they called fighters and why are the stereotypical knight in shining armor paladins?
One of the weirdest details
>>
>>98223123
The name Paladin comes from the order of knights that followed Roland in The Matter of France and were instrumental in founding the Holy Roman Empire.
So the name carries this implication of being faithful to (a) God, while achieving heroic feats, defending the meek, all the classic Knight In Shining Armor cliches.
Fighters come from the OG Fighting Man, who was more of a blank slate warrior, and could be anything from Lancelot du Lac to Conan the Cimmerian.
Outside of the D&D class names, Fighter is just a good umbrella, and Paladins are those fighters that really lean into chivalry, gallantry, and righteousness.
The divide exists because people like different flavours and styles of warrior fantasy to build and play.

This kind of shit pisses me of about Fromsoftware's design. You should never run into a generic enemy that has more maneuvers than your player. Especially not better animated than the PC to add insult to injury. Same shit with the Tree Sentinel's in Elden Ring.

Why not? Player character isn't special, world doesn't resolved around them.
>>
>>98224364
It literally does, though. Everything else is dead/lifeless and you're the last sentient thing in existence working to fix/destroy it. But, from a design conceptualization it's a terrible idea. Think about it. The player is going to be the number one "seen" thing throughout the game, so he should be the best animated, most diverse, and interesting element of the game world.

The original term was "Fighting Man" and covered everything including Viking Raiders, Japanese Samurai, Zulu Warriors, Greek Hoplites, English Longbowmen, French Knights and pretty much anything else you could think of. Later on "Fighting Man" was simplified to Fighter as it is easier to say a write down.

In the original system the best equipment was Plate mail (with Full and Field Plate armor being added later) leading to the most elite Fighters wearing shining plate armor.

Fighting is usually central to most RPGs, so the guy who fights well is invariably gonna be cool as fuck. Even when I'm not playing a fighter, I'm usually trying to hit some sort of warrior archetype.

> Fighter? It's a gigachad knight, or an undead soldier, or something.
> Barbarian? Viking berserker.
> Warlock? Hexblade.

Doesn't have to be D&D either.

> Cleaver? Aristocrat huntsman.
> Heretic? Lunatic war zealot.
> Vermissian Knight? Get the fuck out of here, you already know.

Classless system? Not a problem.

> Epithet? Give me a punchy boy any day.
> Don't Rest Your Head? I'm gonna take a fucked up combat power for sure.
> Magnagothica Maleghast? GORE. GRINDERS. NEXT. QUESTION.

I played one of those gay ass She-Ra RPGs for a single session and immediately made the table's favourite character: Buff, masked lightning swordsman who barely spoke. Literally put him on the evil team and everyone loved him anyways. Why? WHY, YOU ASK?

Because Martials are FUCKING PEAK.

Human male fighter is my go-to role in any game. I know modern players like to say they're boring, but seriously, they don't understand it's about the armor. You can make your knight have all sorts of crazy designs in their armor and come off as completely unique. Games lime Dark Souls prove this, in that nearly every character is some variation of "depressed human Knight" and yet no two are confused.

Good man. May your rolls be high and your games end in a satisfying way instead of crumbling halfway through a campaign.
