Why are BBEGs so much more likely to be mages than martials?
>>98232788most BBEGs are good at both fighting and magic because NPCs don't have class restrictions
>>98232809Dark Wizard in his tower?
>>98232788Because martials are boring to fight against, and the whole point of the BBEG is to be a fun baddie to fight. With a caster he can open up with an array of moves that the party will have to think about and strategize around. Meanwhile a martial will just go>I attackOver and over and over.
Ah, so this was a puckee thread. Kill yourself.
>>98232985Most BBEG monsters have powers too.
• #1: A frequently used plot device is some ritual that must be stopped. • #2: Villains need to have minions. Humanoid mercenaries and soldiers are nice, but there is much more variety in monsters: conjured extraplanar entities, fleshcrafted hybrids, reanimated undead, and so on.• #3: Major villains tend to be masterminds, which suggests high mental attributes (e.g. Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma). All of these point to a spellcaster rather than a martial. A good compromise, however, might be a martial with ritual casting abilities and high mental attributes.>>98232985>>98233240I like the martial-flavored boss enemies in D&D 4e and Draw Steel, such as the human bandit chief in the latter's bestiary, which has a decent amount of combat variety.
>>98232788Because Tolkien and Robert E Howard. Also probably the Wizard of Oz, and maybe Star Wars.
Puckee spam thread. Season with sage and move on
The rare martial villains when they come up are often much scarier. I'm not sure if this is because they're unfamiliar/unexpected. You see Gigachad and his personal army, far too many to stop and even if you can isolate the man himself it will be the fight of your life and he'll probably enjoy it.
>>98232788Why do flies have eyes thT they use to find pies?
>>98234010>The rare martial villains when they come up are often much scarier.God, fighting this man every time is always a close one.
>>98232788Traditional games?
>>98235455Martial villains are based.
>>98236601They are fun, but for the final showdown, the boss has to have some magical abilities as well. Even if they are "Martial," they need to be able to teleport, heal, and all the other good stuff that makes an enemy dangerous.
>>98232788Magic is a good tool to do evil guys stuff. Mind control, zombie hordes, etc.
>>98239800Why though? Dude can just have insane defenses, do a brazillion damage a turn, and have some equivalent of a ring of free action and he's just as terrifying as a wizard, if not more so. The feeling of inevitability does a HUGE amount of heavy lifting.
>>98239851I'm agreeing with you. All I'm saying is that they need the ability to do unique and magical things, but if that all comes from purely martial sources, sweet!
>>98239834Yeah this, magic enables lazy and crappy writers to make constant asspulls instead of a establishing actual logistics and motivations.
