Let’s talk about the importance of self-care when it comes to staying active and fulfilled in trad hobbies.

We’ve all seen disgusto, burnt out, and maladjusted men ranging from their late teens to late 50s at flgs and conventions powering through games on zombie mode, blindly making big purchases, stinking up play areas, raging like entitled babies, and generally acting like the hobby scene owes them something. I’m sure they didn’t all start that way, but dozens of poor choices, habits, and neuro pathways linked to tiny instant gratifications add up over the years. Many such people as described above are figuratively “always eating, never full” and it is breaking them down physically, mentally, and emotionally.

It doesn’t have to be that way for them or for you. All it takes is a little cognizance around the issue, and investing in yourself first and foremost. After all, you are the one playing - not the cards themselves, not the dice, not the minis, and certainly not the companies selling them to you. You matter most to the hobby.
>>
The following are all simple bits of self-care that make a huge impact on our ability to consistently paint minis, craft sovlful terrain, manage our spending wisely, and generally get along well with others even when we don’t like them.

>Getting full, restorative sleep every night
>Eating a baseline of nutritious food before piling on junk
>Hydrating - drink more water than you drink energy drinks or coffee
>Shower, trim nails, keep facial hair tidy, use deodorant
>Wear clean clothes every day
>Plan out spending with a budget
>Set realistic goals and deadlines for completing projects
>Manage your hobby time every week by setting aside deliberate time blocks to craft or play games - don’t always let it consume your entire day/night
>Schedule your game days ahead of time but be flexible for impromptu pick-up games
>Hang out with the people you game with outside of the game table sometime. Go to a restaurant after a game, watch a movie together, go to a con as a group, suck each other’s succulent cocks, etc.
>Take photos of your games and projects so you can actually look back and feel content with your accomplishments and good memories once in a while instead of being strung along with fomo by corporations who don’t care about you and just want to push you forward to the next big consumer purchase

Tell us about your own self-care priorities, successes, failures, or goals.

You have a long life of hobby gaming ahead of you, make sure that it gives your life more value than it takes out of you.

I've been watching Amazon Prime Video during my cardio workouts because some Danish cunts burned down the servers for animekai. And while watching the 1990s cartoon for the Phantom I got some pretty good idea to adapt to my own cyberpunk game. Thanks 90s you edgy goofy fucks.

There’s an epidemic of unclean failed adults in the trad hobby. You sound like one of them trying to avoid personal responsibility and just shitting up the whole scene

Man, I've stopped doing all of those since I broke up with my ex. I told myself 'don't get attached' and 'it's not gonna last'. She was 14 years younger than me and a walking red flag. I was the one that ended it but, god, now I fucking miss her.

Yeah being fit and healthy isn't rocket science, corporations just shovel corn syrup in your face 24/7 so there's a health epidemic.

Drink 3 liters of water a day. This will naturally reduce the amount of soda, alcohol, unhealthy energy drinks, and other sugar-laden drinks you intake, since you'll have a water in your hand. And water can be good, look into flavored seltzer, a lemon+lime seltzer water is like 90% of the pleasure of something like sprite, without the bad stuff.

Have green veggies with every meal. Peas, greenbeans, broccoli, etc. If you don't like veggies, you can sneak them in places. Like adding spinach to an omelette or a smoothie, or making a mixed dish with peas, carrots, corn, and meat.

Include lean protein like fish and poultry in your diet. Most meals should include a mix of protein and carbs, and lean proteins are better than heavy oily ones like pork. This is an area lots of people unknowingly sabotage themselves, because lots of ketchups and barbeque sauces and teriyaki and the like are actually just corn syrup water with flavoring. Don't add crap. Just have a nice piece of chicken with hot sauce or other low sugar option. You can get chicken breast for reasonable prices, although I will say that if you really want to be super good, the ones that don't have various preservatives and additives are better.

Get about 8 hours of sleep a day, and try to make it uninterrupted. Your body needs like 30-40 minutes to fully enter REM sleep and that's what actually recharges your brain. This one is tough due to our busy lifestyles, but if you have to cut out something to get proper sleep, it's worth it. Every single other aspect of your life will improve and you'll notice. And if you have trouble getting a sleep schedule, get a proper eating schedule first. Your body wakes up for some hours after eating, so don't eat after like 11pm or so if you want to go to sleep by midnight or so.

Also walk for like 10 mins a day, stretch as well.
>>
>>98237345
>If you don't like veggies

I think people who don't eat healthy and then switch go through an adjustment period of some weeks but I find myself craving vegetables and fuit. I instantly feel like shit if I just eat pies chips and icecream. I still eat those things like once a week lol, I could stand to cut down on sugar but that's it.

Exercise also regulates your appetite eventually.

Sometimes I think autists need to learn more about one pot meals.

The water advice is very solid but I just add a slice of lemon. Amazing how your taste actually comes back when you stop beating yourself with sugar water

>Start reducing all the sugary snacks I eat
>Years pass, I start joining the gym, running, eating even healthier, focus on sleep etc
>Be me now. Jacked and athletic. No one believes me when I say I'm a wargamer
>Because of the discipline in fitness/diet, it's also lead to discipline in hobby so get all my shit painted easily
>>
>>98237674
I mean yeah, that’s what years of complete permissiveness if not outright encouragement of poor eating and e lifestyle does to a civilization. In a sane, happy healthy environment this wouldn’t even need to be discussed, but look around all the people you see next time you’re at the flgs or at a con. Ask what the common denominator seems to be and then cogitate as to why it is the way it is.
>>
>>98237698
This. The discipline thing is real. I’ve never met a fit wargamer who didn’t have all their shit painted, organized, and actually knew the rules of the game they were playing.
Disgustoids on the other hand behave like they should be receiving praise and free stuff just for being at the game table.

True true, but for the those who are really far gone down the path of slovenly gamer lifestyle they have to work their way up to that. Not physically even (they can curl 5lbs sure), just psychologically.
Simply going for a brief walk is unobtrusive enough that it builds a healthy habit and mindset without making them think they are being deprived of their junk food or game-buying dopamine hits. Over time this will lead to other habits like eating less shit and eventually picking up some weights.
But if you tell them to start with the weights and program a routine etc., they will conflate it for becoming an obnoxious gym bro whomst they think they are better than (in their minds, by not ever exercising they are demonstrating their superiority to gym goers).
Gotta understand that the whole problem is largely psychological for these types of people.

Anyways I play bolt action and sometimes mtg but I really can’t stand the direction it’s gone over the past five or so years

Is it mostly an American thing, or does it seem worse here? I see the Europoors all have nice game clubs where everyone contributes to the terrain collection, donates minis, helps clean the game area, dress nicely, put on events and campaigns...literally I have never seen anything remotely like that here in the states. Am I wearing rose tinted glasses or is this true to some extent? And it's not just the lack of those things- they constantly chase the next retail dopamine hit. Always the new edition, always the next codex, always power-gaming and WAAC-fagging and purchasing five boxes of the same unit every other game night.
>>
>>98239554
It is absolutely an American thing. I’m a burger who’s visited a few game stores in Britain and Canada and I can tell you with certainty that American stores and clubs are the way the way are due to our ingrained sense of individualism, low accountability, and a certain entitlement we have towards companies of any kind to serve us. We’ve also got the whole “newer is better” mindset coupled with instant gratification. It’s the logical conclusion of living in the land of plenty and - to our credit - innovation. A lot of innovation is geared towards convenience though, and generally sloughing responsibility for maintenance of anything onto others (see companies). Wouldn’t want to live any where else but goddamn flgs motherfuckers here make me sick sometimes
>>
>>98239554
>Always the new edition, always the next codex, always power-gaming and WAAC-fagging and purchasing five boxes of the same unit every other game night.

All of that behavior is directly resultant to poor self-care, low self-esteem, misplaced urge for competition, and - if I’m not venturing too far a guess - fatherlessness. They either grew up with single moms or their dads were weak, fat, debauched sluggards

Other than these two, do you genuinely think these people don't know all that? These guys don't care. That level of investment pretty much encourages obsessive and anti-social personalities, which tends to also lead to bad self-care. They know what they need to do, probably better than you do, they just don't like the discomfort or think they're above it in some way. You know, in the "every developed muscle is a book you didn't read" sense, as if you can't develop a beach body in two 1 hour sessions and you wouldn't have spent those two hours just jacking off.
>>
>>98242713
Don't try to get back with her, in my humble opinion. It's time to move on rather than dwell in the past and focus on a future that could've been but never will.

You wanted that hypothetical future but it's gone and you're allowed to grieve that loss, but that particular door is closed. And it sounds like you have another option lined up so carefully explore that one.

My country has the same thing.
Our game clubs and store used to have proper terrain, but since 40k started to use the present terrain for events, the proper terrain vanished over night.
I know because even when I tried to run events with old school terrain the local players start having anxiety attacks.

>>98235063

People who want victories handed to them that they can buy and pay for are not competitors. They are just consumers of product.
You can always spot people who never played team sports growing up. Always. Makes me sad for them as kids, but after a certain age it becomes their responsibility to make up for that lost development. For most, that’s just too heavy a lift though
