It's a backwater world, far away from wherever the actual action is, and they made it clear that even guard veterans never ever saw any xenos, and all they ever fought was other humans. Even the governors life ward thought the stories of xenos one of his old comrades told were just fairy tales, and he was pretty much the most veteran military character in the book. I liked the ending, but at the same time, it's a shame because I would love to have more stories within this hive. All those slang words you learn while reading were kinda for nothing that way.
