>Advertise it as a political book about a new planetary governor
>Don't mention the governor's gender it's a fucking womyn of course
>Barely give xhem much screen time, all about a bunch of basic bitches all over the hive including SPACE LESBIANS LOL
> It turns into a fucking horror story about Tyranids murdering everyone
>The whole fucking hive is blown up because apparently a planet with 100 BILLION people can't put up a fight for longer than a few hours

Dan has really lost his talent. What a fucking wank of a book.
>>
>>98243689
The book is peak 40k and the various different characters within the hive are great. Imagine having only the governor as point of view main character.. it would suck. But we got gangers and workers, rioters, police and planetary defense forces as well as arbites as interesting characters. It's about a hive, not a governor. And if "hive" did not already tell you what would happen, you must be new to 40k.
>>
>>98243689
when did he ever have talent
like you can go back and read his Warhammer monthly comics from before Gaunts Ghoul's was even published and they were pretty bad. His 2000AD stuff is ok but none of it is remarkable compared to Pat Mills.
>>
>>98243689

How about you read actual literature you stupid nigger
>>
>>98243727
Here comes Mr Literacy. Now no one in this thread has the right to complain about a book until you read all those boring novels and essays about how sad and boring everything is. I bet you like schopenhauer and kafka you pathetic fag
>>
>>98243689
I will admit the one thing that is making me hate this book is how somehow this SUPER important hive world just had no orbital defenses at all. The nids jut landed ig, and the hekkin ignorant kkkimperium just where too hekkin ignorant to know about the nids headed towards them (I am very media literate you see). Honestly, this book would have been a lot better without the invasion part, because I actually really enjoyed Szen and Moler as characters, and the worldbuilding of the hive is actually pretty interesting. I dont get how people are gushing over the GSC twist though, I felt that anyone who knows anything about them could see it coming very early on (hint, when miler finds the murder site). 6/10 book for me.
>>
>>98243749
And before some redditnigger comes and says "but muh shadow in the warp!" ah yes, this SUPER important hive world located at the heart of a sector had NO idea about the tyranids, for uh, reasons..... because the kkkimperium is just SO incompetent and stupid, they just would never notice or think to remember that tyranids are invading. Tbf though idk if this could even be called a tyranid victory, since the governor blows up the hive in the end, meaning no biomass?
>>
>>98243749
The twist was very obvious, that much is true. but I don't know where you get the "super important" stuff from. It's a backwater world, far away from wherever the actual action is, and they made it clear that even guard veterans never ever saw any xenos, and all they ever fought was other humans. Even the governors life ward thought the stories of xenos one of his old comrades told were just fairy tales, and he was pretty much the most veteran military character in the book.
I liked the ending, but at the same time, it's a shame because I would love to have more stories within this hive. All those slang words you learn while reading were kinda for nothing that way.
>>
>>98243689
What do you expect women to be doing in the setting if not governance roles?
>>
>>98243689
>a planet with 100 BILLION people can't put up a fight for longer than a few hours
If their military plans had been made by women following rules created to serve female social norms, this isn't surprising. This is basically what will happen if China and the US get into a war (I'm not a chinaboo, just pointing out that collectivists with barely any individuality, such as the Chinese and the Tyranids, can only be defeated with force, while persuasion is only effective against fellow individualists, who can also be defeated with force).
>>

That was actually not really the case in that book - Deliverance Lost did it more, and more obvious.

>>Dude, twists LMAO

Its a book about spies and counter spies. Of course there needed to be some twists. And if its just for tropes sake.

>>super secret organization and super uber spies, but all have the same big tattoo symbol on their body

Pretty sure the tattoo is pretty small in most cases, and invisible to normal eyesight. At least thats how it was described for some of the operatives in that book

>this SUPER important hive world just had no orbital defenses at all
Most worlds of the Imperium don't have robust orbital defense nets ready to fight off a full-scale Tyranid invasion, that's correct. Especially one that catches them with their pants down.
>hekkin ignorant kkkimperium just where too hekkin ignorant to know about the nids headed towards them
Correct. The worlds of the Imperium have terrible communications due to having to rely on Astropaths who are unreliable at best.
> "but muh shadow in the warp!"
Yes, that is literally why most worlds don't know Tyranids are coming until it's too late to muster a proper defense.
>>
>>98253630
Anon. The hive had 90 BILLION people. That's billion with a B. Our world has only 8 billion. They could have mustered an army the likes of which we can't comprehend. At the very least they could have tried to hold out, maybe try to get some reinforcements. Instead in one afternoon the new planetary governor/domne just went.

>Guess we lose lmao better kill 90 billion people
At least they showed how much of a disaster having a bitch in charge is. What a fucking joke of a book.

I would have liked a lengthy description of how the dikes were killed too. Instead we got.
>The hecking BIGOT got killed lmao. Get it WHITE MAN! YOU FUCKING CHUD! BIGOTS GET KILLED!

>>
>>98253639
>Anon. The hive had 90 BILLION people.
That's nice, the Tyranids have 90 Quadrillion hormagaunts in just this one hive fleet alone
> Instead in one afternoon the new planetary governor/domne just went.
Almost as if the hive mind is intelligent enough to target the power structures of a planet to leave it headless and powerless to resist
>Guess we lose lmao better kill 90 billion people
That's 90 billion less people worth of biomass fed to the hive fleet.
>The book was woke as fuck.
You are correct, but the average Imperial world being outclassed by the sheer threat scale of the Tyranids is not the problem with this book.
>>
Is the hive in this book full of Jeets?

>a planet with 100 BILLION people can't put up a fight for longer than a few hours
I mean, yeah?
The tyranids have lore about an organism only a few hours old doing pic related to numerous custodes, some of which may have been 10,000+ years old.
IIRC the parasite of Mortex made literal oceans of rippers in one of the 5ED stories. So nothing you're saying is out of the usual.
>>
>>98254851
>>98253639
Also lets not forget that the planet had just suffered a year long civil war, followed by a violent uprising led by parts of the military, and also GSC while at the same time, the government got replaced. It really was not the best time to mount a unified defense, and also they learned about the tyranids only when the outer hive walls had been breached and half the city was aflame due to the riots.
The moment they realized that its a invasion by Xenos, the nids were already inside the city.

If we accept this situation as given, there is literally no way they could have rallied and repulsed the invasion. Maybe if in the last 50 pages Guilliman would have arrived or something, but luckily Abnett did not went that route.

>The hive had 90 BILLION people
How much of a retarded newfag do you have to be to think this poses an obstacle to Tyranids?

Ok you have 90 billion civvies (including babies, children, women, old people), versus 900 billion bugs. GG human fucking nigger!

By the way, most of them are malnourished factory workers with no training or military discipline. 80% of them will shit and piss themselves in fear when the shrieking nightmare space monsters bristling with teeth and claws and spines come barreling down at them, amd either cower uselessly or run away. Tyranids don't feel fear. The civilians need to be organized into units with competent leadership and figure out communication - the Tyranids are a giant super-organism sharing one mind and coordinate perfectly at the speed of thought. The civilians need supplies, rations, ammo, and logistics, the Tyranids weapons and armour are part of their bodies and their food are the corpses of both sides.

Even if it was the Tyranids outnumbered 10:1 they would still mop the fucking floor with them in an afternoon. They have bio-engineered monsters faster and stronger and tougher than space marines, and other bigger ones faster and stronger and tougher than Custodes, and even bigger ones on the level of Greater Daemons. Oh by the way, before you even fight these things all your shit has been sabotaged and stolen by genestealer cultists. Good luck with your 90 billion greasy, asthmatic, sickly peasants raised on polluted shitwater, nigger!

They describe civil life in a Hive city from various points of view, with characters from all kinds of social levels.

Then Tyranids arrive.

Dark Tide is closer to Gaunt's Ghosts, also written by Abnett. It's a very good book series.
It kinda fucks itself with the last book though. One of the primary antagonists of the series is finally revealed, but the implications for the setting are so bad that it sounds like fanfiction.

can't stand how many fucking women they shoehorn in 40k these days, go check how many dead wymminz soldiers are in the IDF/Russia/Ukrainian armies. >>
>>98253639
another thing to add is human life is absolutely worthless to the Imperium, 90 billion might sound big to you but there a shitload of other hive planets, with other planets also going over that number, so to the Imperium nuking a hive city to stop some nids is only note worthy because of some lost non human related resources

>>98255691
Yeah, I was talking about 40k because of the thread, but yes Western fiction is fucked. Which is why I only consoom either old media or a small variety of anime.

It's not like women at all are wrong, Sisters are cool but let's not kid ourselves, the idea behind Sisters was just John Blanche busting a nut to Madonna in a nun outfit and making it a faction of crazy hot sadomasochistic nuns. Or Dark Eldar wyches, but even then, they're a throwback to old 30s pulp comics and books about hags throwing virgin blood sacrifices and shit, they were never supposed to be complex feminist power fantasies. Even in that CGI series about Iron Warriors they managed to shoehorn a brave and stronk cadian female officer.

This seems quite likely, I'd be surprised if there weren't various authors doing that.
>everything is cannon eh? Let's see if they really mean it
>>
>>98255684
I agree. Thing is, they've always had female characters in 40k fiction, but back in the day it felt organic. It was like a sexy assassin who disguised as a courtesan, or an aide to an Inquisitor, or a low-level grunt soldier who was just an expy of Vasquez from Aliens or something, nowadays they're always unlikable girlboss cunts in some superior authority position and it feels forced as fuck.
>>
>>98255594
>One of the primary antagonists of the series is finally revealed, but the implications for the setting are so bad that it sounds like fanfiction.

Can you put what happens in spoiler tags?
>>
>>98243689
I tried reading this but it always feels like BL authors do not understand how the Imperium functions with multiple competing beuracracies who have their own power, even Abnett who has been writing for 40k for decades.
