I think it started out more complex than it needed to. Aiming to be a little more accessible probably would have helped the general expansion and longevity of the game.

The gameplay was always irrelevant. From day 1 this was made for Disney adults to collect. Its the same model as Pokemon.

Compared to modern Magic, just about every card game shy of Yugioh is simple.

Except pokemon cards started out very simple.
Lorcana cards are intimidating. They don't look like an easy game to play, so you really need to either be a really gungho Disney collector (and can ignore all the complicated mechanics on the card) or an experienced TCG player (who's probably already several thousand dollars in on some other game).

A lighter, breezy game aimed at those Disney adults that would eventually expand in complexity if the sets caught on would have been my strategy.
