Hello anons.I have a good amount of experience playing D&D and PF and GMing Cyberpunk2020 and Mongoose Traveller.I'm thinking about finally GMing a fantasy themed game, but I very much don't like D&D and PF, with their strict mechanics, combat based around massive HP bloat and general shallowness of any element outside combat, specially travel.Do (you) have any recommendation for a good system for fantasy play? I don't strictly care for setting but I'd rather it be a system specifically designed for PCs using swords and armor and magic fighting against monsters in an ancient or medieval world rather than a general "you can do anything with this".I am particularly curious about RuneQuest, having never played it. Is it any good? Is any edition particularly notable or should I just look up the current Chaosium one?
>>98256479I recommend taking what you like from whatever you can get or look at for free, and making your own system.
>>98256479It's a classic system. Is it good? Well... Character build traps galore. I don't know if they ever made an edition where sorcery didn't suck. It's one of those systems where you can spend a few hours making a character which dies in five minutes. It's a very lethal combat system. Progression guidelines? What are those? Threat ranking for creatures? Pfft. There can be a lot of fun in slaughtering PCs when you underestimated how powerful some creatures are.
>>98256479Fight a a fourlegged nonhuman without a shield. Hit its paw. Chuckle as the rules allow it no sensible defense and it has to eat cascading debilitating rolls (the system is pretty ass). You have better options like just running an OSR, Barbarians of Lemuria or GURPS dungeon fantasy
>>98256479rq6/mythras is top tier for heroic fantasy and you can start playing with just the free document. Think of it like an quick start srd type thing.Mythras has the classic line which is oldschool dnd fantasy themed and the base game which is more classical age vibes. It doesnt have cr and stuff but you can simply understand the power level of said encounters by their combat skills armor and potential access to magic or special abilities. When your fighter has 75% skill on combat and the enemy griffon has 90% you know that it's a hard fight for example. Also because it's not dnd getting swarmed is really dangerous and will get you killed pretty fast.
