How terrifying is an ogre lore-wise? Like if I were some random villager how would I view them?

In rpg terms a base ogre would be a low level encounter, but they could absolutely terrorize a village.

But, they're too dense to swim, so they're constrained by rivers and need to use bridges, which are all guarded by mercenary trolls that locals pay with goats and vodka, they're pretty nice generally speaking, and get along well with humans.

Ogres have a huge gait and wingspan, the amount of muscle in their legs probably has them deceptively fast on flat terrain. Between that and their reach being polearm-tier with a massive club on the end, they'll be lethal. Now I don't doubt that four men could drop the average, retarded ogre if they had the discipline to come up with a plan to bait and juke the ogre beforehand and stick with it, but the average dude is likely to panic. All it takes is one mistake and an ogre will either cripple or kill, and then it goes downhill from there. Best way to kill an ogre is bring as many men as possible, hit it from a distance via projectiles that could pierce the fat, i.e., heavy longbows/crossbows, and keep a few pikes handy. Thankfully they are legitimately retarded. If you can outsmart the average five year-old you can probably come up with a plan to dispatch one. It's the follow through that gets you.

Their most disturbing aspect is how dulled to pain and injury they are, as they can shrug off catastrophic damage to their bodies and still keep fighting rather than go into pain induced shock.The end result is essentially a monstrous vaguely human being, that is dulled to pain and obedient to a fault to whomever they view as the "boss" figure, be it an other older ogre in the case of wild/feral ogre populations or a handler in case of the ogres still held in the sway of miltiaries or other aspects of civilized societies in the setting, such as heavy labor industries etc.
