>>Overview
We are going to construct some mechs. This is a stand alone thread for mech construction challenges. Each scenario given will have 4 days to submit an entry. You may submit more than once (like we could tell anyhow) but each must be on its own post. The bids will then be compiled and voted on by Anons in the thread to determine who gets the contract. Voters should consider the mech's cost, effectiveness in the desired role, and the fluffiness of the sales pitch and description.

>>Rules
Year, tech base, and tech level to be used for the mech will be specified in the scenario, and should be followed.
Positive quirks must equal or be exceeded by negative quirks, with no more than 6 quirks total.
Adherence to the desired combat role, tonnage, or budget are not strictly necessary, but may impact how anons vote on your design.

>>Formating
Mech pitches should be formatted as follows:
Chassis Model
Role
Weight
Quirks
Battle Value at a 4/5 pilot
Dry Cost in C-Bills
Sales pitch and In setting fluff.

>> The first scenario will be posted after the OP with a deadline date and time.
>>
Scenario One
The year is 3151 and the inner sphere is at war. The long rearmament is in full swing and for some companies there are niches ready to be filled. One of these has long been held by the lowly Urbanmech. A cheap mech sold to worlds in need of a garrison and defense mech. It's not much but it fills a role to assure the citizens of nothing else.

You think you can do better and snatch those long unopposed sells. Your challenge is to make a competitive mech better than the Urbanmech and take those sales!

>> Requirements
Make a cheap, jump capable mech that can deal a respectable punch. You need something that can perform as good or ideally better than an Urbanmech at a similar price point.
Price: 1.5 Million c-bills or under
Speed: match or exceed the Urbanmech movement. Jumpjects recommend
Weapons: At least one Hard hitting weapon, anti infantry or riot control weapons a plus but not required.

>> End date:
June 30th, 10AM EST(UTC+4)

>The year is 3151 and the inner sphere is at war.
Does this mean we can use Mixed Tech?
>>
>>98263624
You can use any tech. I forgot to include that in the scenario, something I have now updated in the template. It may make the price point harder to hit, but it's allowed.

Well it turns out a Clan ER Large Laser runs a bit too hot without Double Heat Sinks, so we going super basic:

Aoyama A0-Y
Ambusher
25 Tons
Easy to Maintain
Narrow/Low Profile
Poor Life Support
Difficult Ejection
BV2: 568
1,388,646 C-bills

The Aoyama is a simple light mech essentially built around a Large Laser.
Starting with Industrial Mech components, it's development lacks some of the "Quality of Life" features that could be expected of a more mature Battlemech, specifically in it's Life Support and Ejection Systems, but it's squat and narrow body gives it a much reduced target profile.
This, plus the simplicity of the components, make it a rough riding but excellent Garrison Mech for Urban Centers, where it can make best use of it's 120 meter Jump range and 6 tons of armor.

Lawman

25 tons

BV 611
1.428.750 C-Bills

Built around proven technology, the 25-ton Lawman is a slow but hard-hitting machine. A shoulder-mounted PPC is supplemented by two Small Pulse Lasers deliberately arranged in a side-by-side handheld mount reminiscent of a shotgun. Eleven heat sinks are enough to allow for Jump Jet driven in-and-out actions reminiscent of the heavier Panther and Griffin models at a fraction of the price. Be it 'mechs or men, no-one can ignore the presence of the law!

Gonna bump this so it doesn't archive yet

How come mechs cost only 1-3 milly C-Bills? The Abrams MBT is $6-10 million. An F-35 costs $80-110 million. At 1.5 million C-bills, even small periphery nations should be able to field whole batallions of mechs.
>>
>>98268116
A c-bill is roughly $5 US in the 90s. Which still puts it cheaper. Don't dwell on BT economy to much or god kills a cat girl.

That being said, you are looking at dirt cheap mechs at that price point. Very little new tech. It's hard to hit that price point really.
>>
>>98268116
>>98268222
Plus remember, 1.5 million C-bills gets you a LIGHT mech like an Urbanmech or a Locust.
>>
>>98268116
Advances in manufacturing technology and economies of scale. The US can build an F-35 for about the same price as the Swedes can build the significantly inferior Gripen and for less than the French can build a moderately inferior Rafale, though I might be misremembering on the Rafale's price per unit.

Like >>98268317 said, a 1 C-Bill =/= 1 USD. 1 C-bill : $1 in 1990 means that 1M C-bills is now ~$13.2M USD in CY+11. Cost-adjusted, a modernized Bradley that costs $4.5M would be ~342,000 C-bills or about 1/3 of a Locust - a mech that had been in production for 550 years at the time of the invasion - which would cost $19.8M USD. Heavier and less common mechs also require a huge amount of investment and engineering if you want to actually build them from scratch instead of cobbling them together from parts that have been kicking around in a warehouse for centuries. The prices are still fucked though so don't think about it TOO hard.

Battle Computer
BV2: 390
1,548,083 C-Bills

Ferrando Industries is proud to present the APH-3 "Apache", a very affordable CQC-specialized humanoid 'mech for the 32nd century which we feel represents an aspect of urban combat that existing 'mechs overlook - stabbings. Featuring 5/8/3 movement, 4.5 tons of armor, a medium vibroblade and two heavy small lasers of Clan design, the guiding principle of the Apache represents our core principle of violence of action. To that end the legs have been reinforced to prevent damage while engaging in attacks from above, a Battle Computer has been installed to increase pilot reaction speeds, and precision during jumps has been increased via our proprietary K.A.I.Z.O. system. While some have criticized our decision to not implement an ejection system and our "sub-standard" life support and heat management systems, our response is that these features are not necessary when the 'mech is used as intended and pilot survival is in fact increased - during field tests performed in [REDACTED], zero test pilots were lost to ammunition explosions.

We regret that we were incapable of meeting the exact financial requirements of the tender, but our legal department has retained several mathematicians who are prepared to testify that 1,548,083 rounds down to 1,500,000 at any level of precision and we are prepared to litigate if our tender is rejected on financial grounds.

Sun tsu said - "fight only on the ground you are strongest". to that we ask- why fight on the ground at all?
capable of 4/6/6 movement thanks to it's partial wing, the cabbage moth can flit through urban sprawl and rough terrain alike, easily doubling the performance of many competitors. Offensively, the left arm is formed by an (almost new) blazefyre large laser, proven and easily replaced technology throughout the periphery.
Defensively the 'mek carries 2.5t of armour primarily built around the head and torso. The left arm carries a fluid gun, reccomended to be loaded with 0.5 tonnes of water or other innert fluids for fire suppression (use of fluid gun for chemical warfare voids the warranty)
Finally, as deluxe features, the Cabbagemoth has an arm with a hand and a CT dumper (rear)

SMITH-INDUSTRIAL gambled that their use of industrial structure and commercial armour would be selling points, as it would allow price-consious buyers to source their own replacement parts domestically. This played into the high mobility, allowing the cabbagemoth to kite and escape unfavourable engagements if damaged. Critically, this supposed "survivability" was supposed to offset the lack of an ejection system (rendered impractical by the improved life support deemed nesessary for "fire suppression" with the fluid gun). They hoped that bureaucrats would see this as a way to encourage mekjocks to bring their frames back in one piece, or at least without losing the costly fusion engine.

Napoleon MER-D5
Skirmisher/Ambusher
30 Tons
No Ejection System, Rugged (1)
BV2: 535
1,487,590 C-Bills

The first mech to be offered from Atlas International, the Napoleon aims to be a cheap, affordable and reliable alternative to the Urbanmech, while serving a wider variety of roles on battlefield.

Based, visually, on the bulky-limbed look of the Crusader (especially the mechs large lower legs, the armor of which looks nothing so much like a pair of large boots), the Napoleon ends up looking, as one test-pilot commented, like "the child of a Crusader, dressed in its dads work-clothes." While not anywhere as intimidating or impressive a look as was hoped for, the mech none-the-less fills the role of an urban ambusher and security mech, designed to cheaply hold the line while back-up arrives. Its main armament is a ER Large Laser, mounted in the head with the help of a small cockpit. While a tight-fit, and lacking the hard-hit of the Urbanmech's usual armaments, Atlas International argues that it allows the mech to serve a wider variety of roles; it doesn't have to worry about ammo (much less ammo-explosions), and allows it to hit targets at far longer ranges, without resorting to artillery. This is backed up with a Small Pulse Laser in the left torso, and a flamer in the right, both mainly to serve as anti-infantry weapons, which is further enhanced by a machine in the right arm. 16 single heat-sinks work hard to keep the mech cool.

Notably, an anti-personnel pod sits in each leg as standard; while there inclusion seems somewhat perfunctory to the mechs other armaments, they exist to address a flaw in the design. The mech was originally designed to have protected actuators, but the design team couldn't make it work, thus the pods inclusion to make up for this missing extra bit of protection in an urban environment. Although, the lack of an ejection system seems like a larger point of concern...

Clan Seafox presents the Snipe. The Snipe utilized a mixture of clan and inner sphere technology to produce a low-cost, mobile, and well protected light battlemech.

The primary armament of the Snipe is an accurate Seafox built ER PPC mounted on its back capable of delivering extreme firepower out to extreme ranges, while in its head are two clan small pulse lasers for fighting off enemy infantry or in close combat. Its primary armament is capable of outright destroying many light mechs in a single shot, and since all of its armament is centrally located in the torso and head disabling the Snipe without killing it outright is extremely difficult.

For mobility the Snipe is capable of reaching ground speeds up to 86 km/h making it capable of keeping up with most line and trooper battlemechs while its two light jump jets offer some tactical flexibility in rough terrain. Finally for armor the Snipe is very well protected for its weight class, with ample armor to survive a volley of medium or pulse lasers that most mechs designed to hunt light mechs rely on.

Clan Seafox is so confident in this battlemech that we've already started a full production run, planning to build at least 1000 battlemechs by the end of the year, although with contracts those numbers can be scaled up significantly.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!

There is often a competition in budget between the aerospace and mech acquisitions. And I tell you now, there was once a dream! A dream that was realized and can be again!

Presenting to you, the Dreamer DMR-1! The first LAM in nearly a century, the first one to have a reasonable price since the days of the Star League, and the first one that costs below 2 million C-Bills!

And even with such a low price tag, we have taken especial care to make sure to address the problems of those old designs to make ours easier to control and maintain! Now some of you may worry about the legs looking a bit exposed, but even in 'mech mode you can jump around and in all others you can fly! Who could do something like a kick to them? And infantry? Do you not see that X-Pulse Laser? Even if they could, such forces would be taken out with ease.

This beauty uses a stable four legged design that is easy enough to handle that even a child could pilot it making it an ideal trainer when not on guard duty! Off the shelf components means you don't have to search far for replacements if you so need it! Those MML's means this machine offers unparalleled versatility to any force letting it provide indirect fire support from afar or a mean punch up close, plus a rather strong riot control option should that need arise! If those ammo bins run dry then don't you worry that medium laser gives some reliable backup punch while you find time to reload. Don't worry about it being a bit awkward to get out of, five and half tons of armor with a C.A.S.E. protected ammo means you won't be needing to jump out anytime soon! Worried about infantry closing in on those legs? Well you can just jump away easily!

This no nonsense approach to mech design can be yours for the exact price of one and half million!

Just had a thought about the LAM actually. Isn't there an issue where LAMs are currently undercosted in terms of C-Bills on megamek because they never ported over the old rules about them costing more than standard mechs?
>>

Honestly I've seen worse mechs, running ICE and with only 2 dots for cooling means the OB variant is gonna struggle if the local planetary de- errr... pirate havens have urbies or locusts and they get into a prolonged engagement. With the OA configuration being ideal for prolonged operation once you ste- I mean legitimately salvage a fusion engine. 5/10 would run these mechs for my perfectly legitimate mercenary company who are in no way connected to organized crime
>>
>>98271849
It could be, I'll have to look and see
I think the main issue for the LAM will be lack of pilots. Backwater Garrison pilots who normally pilot Urbanmechs are not top of the line anyhow.

Finding enough trained as both areospace and mech pilots to fill even a small backwater Garrison? Unlikely
>>
>>98271929
I figured with 5.5 tons of pod space you could also get a light rifle with a ML or a hatchet with 2x ML and an extra DHS which aren't great on paper but perfectly sensible loadouts for running a protection racket- I mean intimidating local raider groups in the Periphery.
>>98271940
LAM pilots iirc struggle to get past 6/7 as a regular and 4/5 is basically an elite. I'll need to check where I read that though as I think it was Interstellar Ops but not sure.

For your consideration, the fine engineers at Slop Industries present the Peltast! Built around a newly available Clan-spec large pulse laser, the Peltast can deliver sustained volleys of punishing laser fire independent of resupply. While the Peltast's design favors survivability and firepower over speed, its class 100 fusion engine allows it to keep heavy mechs at a distance, with two jump jets to enhance its mobility in urban environments. When not harassing the enemy from afar, a pair of machine guns in low-slung arm mounts are perfect for providing close range fire support and/or controlling the restless populace, depending on your political inclinations.

Placement of the main armament directly overhanging the cockpit may complicate ejection, but we at Slop Industries just like to think of it as encouragement for pilots to be on their best performance! And with a low profile chassis and surprisingly thick armor for its weight class, those pilots shouldn't even have to think of reaching for the ejection lever.
>>
>>98272065
Its a baby Marauder and I think its cute.

I am also playing around with the ICE engine omni concept and I am starting to think if this was designed in universe the person who designed it could have been accused of using the thin line between genius and madness as a skipping rope. On one hand a fusion engine is way more weight efficient. On the otherhand utilizing a non fusion engine seems like it could be more crit efficient by letting you take advantage of having say DHS and weight saving materials without going over crit limit. Utilizing a fission engine as opposed to fusion I think might lead to a far more effective BA and infantry platform with the right mix of materials.
>>
>>98272065
Could have an all laser variant with small lasers instead of the mg's as well to push heat a bit more. Or swap to a base LL and small pulses to deal with infantry/ unruly populations with ideas of grandeur and/ or a say in local governance while still keeping the big gun and marauder feel. Overall love the tiny death machine

>It's why by the dark age you see everyone slowly switching to clan tech as they can.
Also because the clanners have been in the IS for a century. If anything IS tech should all essentially be defunct with the clans getting more specialized tech boosted to clan levels like light/heavy gauss rifles, PPCs, and ferro-fibrous armor. There's no logical reason why anyone in the IS is building IS AC/20s for example.

the Bellephron quadmech is our letest product for those who want long range firepower in a small package
packing a head mounted light autocannon and ER medium laser and a pair of torso mounted medium lasers, this machine can harass enemies at long range before pouncing on vulnerable enemies with its lasers
using the brand new technology of caseless rounds, battlefield endurance is doubled

while mounting two guns on the head does make the interior cramped and makes the ejector seat rather unreliable, it does reduce its profile considerably
the use of our unique low-pressure retractable quad leg system not only ensures accurate fire at all times, but allows the mech to lower itself until its barely touching the ground, shielding itself from return fire
when fully retracted, the mech forms a nearly perfect rectangular shape that allows it to be packed more efficiently into cargo spaces for long distance movement

any allegation that the head-mounted guns were borrowed from the capellans is entirely unfounded
no capellan engineers or capellan investment capital was involved in the design
>>
>>98271849

True, still Clans got a bunch of shit that was higher damage, longer range, and lighter weights!
>>
>>98273595
>Clans got a bunch of shit that was higher damage, longer range, and lighter weights!
Yeah, and twice the BV cost lol. And because BV overvalues range and speed and undervalues armor, it means that Clans end up being overpriced glass cannons.
Seriously, most light OmniMechs are damn near unusable, unless they're boating heavy small lasers or something. Mediums are barely better, unless named "Stormcrow."
>>
>>98273824
Clans were introduced in 1989/90 and the precursor to BV known as Combat Value took until '92 to introduce in a side product and then needed a second attempt in '94 that was more visible. BV version 1 was 97, almost a decade after the Clans.
Current version of BV2 was first in 2007 with a revision in 2021.
>>
>>98272975
So far the main takeaway from all this is just how broken the C-Bill is for determining cost. Autocannons in particular feel they should be a lot cheaper than they actually are and Clan tech C-Bill costs work out cheaper like legit Clan FF is cheaper than IS Heavy FF and Clan FF is the exact same price as IS FF but because it covers more armor works out cheaper!
>>98273824
BV as it stands also heavily underestimates heat dissipation potential. There are legit mechs that the only difference is they have DHS but are the exact same BV!
>>98273468
Just switched to that and now it makes sense. Incidentally if you remove composite and go with a LAC5 and flamer you can squeeze it just under 1.5mil in case you are interested?
>>
>>98274275
>Autocannons in particular feel they should be a lot cheaper than they actually are
That has a lot to do with a fundamental flaw in how Battletech is balanced in general. The stats for various weapons were originally balanced based on the tech level of the Third Succession War, a time when double heat sinks weren't a thing and the higher heat generation of energy weapons helped offset their greater damage potential per ton relative to autocannons. But when they moved the timeline forwards and the availability of DHS meant that you could get an extra 10 heat dissipation per turn with no tonnage cost, autocannons suddenly became garbage weapons.

What Battletech really needs is era-specific C-bill prices, where something like a standard AC/10 might cost its baseline price in 3025, but would cost less in 3067, and would be even cheaper by 3150.
>>
>>98274275
>Incidentally if you remove composite and go with a LAC5 and flamer you can squeeze it just under 1.5mil in case you are interested?
I toyed with some other alterations and came up with this.

Threshold THS-1
Ambusher
20 Tons
Quirks: Easy to Pilot, Protected Actuators, Poor Sealing, Weak Legs
BV: 739
Dry Cost: 1,499,940 C-Bills

We had heard this contract had a maximum price of 1.5 Million C-Bills and decided to see just how close we could get with our various contacts would allow for us to get to that. Our testing has revealed this.

While this platform does admittedly only have 2 tons of armor, the cargo space is created in a way that it can easily be removed for an additional ton of armor if the client so wishes. It will just be something that comes out of their books as otherwise we are not longer within the requested budgetary constraints.

EXACTLY, and talk is they are working on BV3 currently.

>But when they moved the timeline forwards and the availability of DHS meant that you could get an extra 10 heat dissipation per turn with no tonnage cost
Well the thing there was that originally, Engine Heat Sinks didn't exist and you had to mount at least 10 Heat Sinks in your Critical Slots.
This is why Mechs like the Marauder ended up with a Torso Ammo Bomb; What was a Crit Packed Side Torso with some Ammo suddenly became VERY empty.

One of the proposed buffs for Autocannons going forward is allowing them to eat a free Crit, at least mechanically expressing how they can be more reliable than Energy Weapons.

NTA but that would be cool. It also sounds one hell of a project. And gets really weird in cone areas as Cbills and house bills are different things and then the darkage had issues with money period.

But it's a fun idea for a series of charts.

Scuttler

Improved Sensors, Compact Mech, Exposed Actuators, Poor Sealing
BV 519
1,477,000 C-Bills

The Scuttler is Stronghold Manufacturing's latest offering, perfectly suited to the needs of any administration. Capable of navigating through standard roads at 86 kph without damaging the asphalt it walks on, the Scuttler can deploy wherever it is needed with minimal interruption to city services and be stored in a space as small as a suburban garage thanks to our patented folding leg design. Once at the scene of the incident, our advanced sensor package directly integrates a Beagle-spec Active Probe and TAG system to provide detailed information about damage, injuries, or positioning to police or medical personnel. A pair of Magna Mk IV lasers, mounted on each foreleg's actuator, allow for controlled and minimal damage while carrying out pursuits or subduing misappropriated IndustrialMechs, with a Mk III on standby when additional force is necessary. Once the pilot's work on the scene is finished, the cockpit's side window can be opened to let the fresh outside air in while filing a report using the terminal located behind their seat. For those with more specialized needs, we also offer the 1PX, upgrading the primary laser to an ER model, the 1C, which substitutes the TAG for a C3 computer, and the 1R, which replaces the laser with a five-tube Multi-Missile Launcher and two ammo bins.
>>
>>98275637
>EXACTLY, and talk is they are working on BV3 currently.
Yeah, but it has nothing to do with Clans being overpowered. If anything, Clan units without pulse lasers tend to be overcosted if anything; again, because BV overvalues land speed and range, and undervalues armor.
>One of the proposed buffs for Autocannons going forward is allowing them to eat a free Crit, at least mechanically expressing how they can be more reliable than Energy Weapons.
And also compensating for how ballistic weapons are unreasonably enormous compared to all other weapons.

Listen up ladies, Ghetto Mekworks has got your final solution to the need for a cheap garrison mech. It ain't fancy, it ain't fast, but when you girls need something that can cleave an enemy in two with a single shot then what you need is some good old fashioned reliable firepower and this thing delivers! Built around a sophisticated gauss rifle sourced from our finest Sea Fox partners who are quite happy to trade without asking too many questions, we have optimized this design for long range firing allowing you to easily rip the wings off of any bug that enters your gun sights! If your would be raider does not get the message then consider the backup laser a handy little insurance policy more than capable of finishing them off not that we expect them to ever want to get close anyway. Of course we also programmed this little beauty to be fully capable of assisting your day to day logistical works as we don't believe in no hangar Queens but proper workhorses! All actuators have been adjusted so they can aid in basic construction to more complicated engineering works. When placing your order then the answers is yes that we do accept cash and can ship in bulk!

This was hard as there were a few contenders but this wins out for me because the most complicated component on it are the small pulses and those are so common in the era that you'll find them in childrens cereal boxes. Good old reliable PPC is a good hole puncher no matter the era.

4) CabbageMoth

This was a hard one considering we have a literal nuclear coke can as one of the options on the table but I have chosen this as the king of batshit crazies because it feels so mad yet fitting for the universe like it is some odd custom job a bored militia force came up with and decided to offer it for sale for a laugh.

Deciding was much harder than I expected cause I genuinely love a lot of designs people came up with.

Gotta go with the CabbageMoth, >>98269856. Between the dumper, the fluid cannon and the price it seems like an oustanding urban garrison mech. I sure as shit wouldn't want to take it to war but it seems equally at home putting down riots, clearing rubble or participating in civic defense.

The comparison point for this era appears to be the 1.5 mil UM-R68 with an MRM30, Small Pulse, and Small Laser or the 1.7 mil UM-R69 with a UAC/10, ER Small Laser, and Small Pulse. Both are the most common varieties being used during IlClan (even at Uncommon), with the base having fallen to Very Rare.

I think within that context, the Snipe SNP-2A1 >>98270510 might be the best option overall.

>2
The CabbageMoth "CbMth" >>98269856, though not strictly for what all it is as I have some disagreements with the particular loadout. I'm just a sucker for having general engineering and disaster relief utility being part of garrison mechs because that's realistically going to be the huge part of their use.

>3
On both the in-universe difficulty of making one as well as on a meta level, I have to give it to the Dreamer DMR-1 >>98270737. The other LAM has better specs for it's weapons, but the Dreamer actually proved a way to squeeze LAMs into some very tight design specs.

>4
Hotseat H0T-5E4T >>98270561 takes it. The armaments are humorous, but designation being a leetspeak version of the proper name hit me with some old nostalgia.
>>
Did anyone get why the Aoyama has it's name?
>>
>>98288036

>>
>>98288015
One thing the Dreamer has going for it that I am not sure even the creator thought of is that Heavy Rifle can be easily mistaken as an AC/20 to the untrained eye. That alone can act a significant deterrent.
>>
>>98288650
Even without that, the Heavy Rifle plus one ton of ammo is 9 Tons. That's a pretty good amount of room to work with. It looks like Singles were went with for cost reasons and he thing only being a 10/10 heat according to MegaMek, but there's probably a fairly easy upgrade of Doubles + an IS ER PPC or Bombast Laser + 2 additional Tons of Armor.

It's out of range of this particular contest, LAM pilots are hard to train, and more, but those things doing single shot ambushes followed by fleeing would be incredibly annoying to deal with if the force doesn't have enough Lights or Aerospace to hunt them down. There's certainly more than enough that can do that because there's a lot of them with much better speed profiles than 9/14, but it is still that same Urbanmech annoyance.

The Headsman is Sorenson Industrial's debut OmniMech, utilizing a standard 300-rated reactor to remain combat-capable after severe damage. In all configurations, it utilizes TSM and 14 tons of pod space to support the massive Hatchet dominating its right arm. Although expected to operate at high heat for extended periods, the cockpit will remain comfortable even as the myomer reaches full efficiency. Inspired by the early Hatchetman's arm mounted heat sinks, the axhead also functions as a radiator for the Headsman's heat. While this has no notable effect on the weapon's capabilities, our aggressor team has found the glowing blade exceptionally threatening, to describe their reports politely.

In order to build the heat necessary for its TSM to operate, the Headsman primarily relies on energy weapons and avoids carrying ammunition. Its stock configuration carries a fully laser-based arsenal. A pair of ER Large Lasers split across its center and left torso serve as its main armament, along with a pair of standard Medium models in the right beside an anti-infantry Small Pulse Laser. In case the pilot is forced to maintain fire, a Coolant Pod is carried beside the secondary laser bank.
For long range support, the A configuration carries an ER PPC and standard Large Laser in the right and left torso respectively. A Medium and pair of Small Lasers in the left arm better allow the pilot to control their heat level when they close into melee range.
The B configuration instead aims to provide supporting fire, using an ER Large Laser in its left torso while discouraging flanking maneuvers with a pair of Medium X-Pulses in its arm and a Small Laser in its center torso. A trio of Jump Jets assist with repositioning to support allied forces with the ECM suite carried in the right torso.

A third ER Medium Laser is mounted in the chest in case the arm mounted weapons get damaged with an ER Small Laser in the head slot for close range and Toad slaying. 2 SRM6 racks in the right torso provides versatile explosive power with two tons of ammo protected by CASE. 13 double heatsinks keep the heat levels manageable to prevent shutdown.

For middling muddles, 3 medium lasers are there to do their usual thing. And to round out, a pair of flamers, as clanners love to run hot, so why not give 'em the ol' toasty butt whilst giving them a taste of Battle Fisting Action? Use the ER LL to cover plink at range before getting an opportunity to chase down a suitable target, slam it with its arsenal of lighter weapons.

You know the Assassin. You love the Assassin. The most fun mech to pilot after knocking back a PPC or 3 at the canteen.

What if I told you, that the enterprising engineers of Superior Combat Arms & Munitions, a wholely owned subsidiary of Quickcell made the best mech to drunk drive even better! Using the improvements of the modern era, S.C.A.M re-engineered the beloved ASN frame to use endo-steel, and replaced the 4.5 tons of armor you know and love with ferro-fibrous. Now the cockpit is protected to industry standards, and the legs have been reinforced with additional ferro fibrous to withstand the inevitable oopsies. S.CA.M doesn't judge and anticipates the needs of our customers. Besides, it's not like more armor was going to help you against the batteries Clanners are packing.

We replaced the iconic medium laser for pulse because we want you to hit your target when one Toad looks like 5. I know what you're thinking. What happened to the missiles? Isn't a Narc some weird Canopian bedroom assistant? Let us explain. With the Narc homing beacon, actually hitting Clanners moving like a Savannah Master driver on combat stims becomes Someone Else's Problem.

Using tried and tested components and totally not bolting weapons onto a loadermech haphazardly we were able to construct a design in the fraction of the time our would be competitors could. Interested? We accept cash only and there are no refunds! I shall send you the details after I finish this meal, this succulent Capellan meal!

Sarissa SRA-Bm1
Skirmisher
55 tons
Easy to Maintain, Protected Actuators,
BV2:1403
5,787,907 C-Bills

After a lackluster response from potential buyers, Atlas International is glad to offer their second mech in response to the ongoing threat of the clans; the Sarissa!

A 55 ton mech, it's humanoid form inspired somewhat by the soldiers of the Successor States in the Mediterranean of ancient terra, the Sarissa is meant as a rapid-response and skirmisher mech, that can contribute meaningfully to a firefight, while offering support to its fellow mechs in a larger confrontation. An XL engine was considered, but was ultimately unfeasible for the small company, who focused their attention elsewhere. Built to be ready repaired and customized, and with over-armoured actuators, it's meant to be long lasting, and easy to maintain.

It's main armament is an ER large laser in the left torso, allowing the mech to reach out and touch targets at long range, as it closes. An SRM, fed by two tons of ammo in a CASE protected bin, backed up by a medium laser, help at medium range, while a pair of medium pulse laser, one in each arm, come to life as the mech closes in - or, more likely, its clanner foes close in on it. Most uniquely, a small cockpit is fitted to the mech, allowing a pair of AMS to be installed in the head, one on either side of the crested, helmet-like dome of the mechs head - meant to mimic the embellishments typical to Greek helmets of the Successor States. While only equipped with a single ton of AMS ammo, the protection provided was seen as vital by the designers (and you can just turn one AMS off, if you need to conserve ammo). An ECM suite provides further protection from Clan technology.

A notable flaw of the design is that, while 'technically' the AMS ammo is in the same bin as the CASE protected SRM ammo, the feed pulls through the center torso into the head, leaving most of the ammo to sit ready in the center torso.

Sourcing new components and materials including a sword that has been tested effectively on Solaris VII we have shaped these into making the Oni, a counter to all their fast scouts that can run them down and beat them to death in glorious melee combat! Expert craftsmen have shaped the appearance of this mech so that it may cause fear in any invader. The small profile has forced the removal of the cooling jacket on the laser system however in testing we have found this has proven to be an advantage when paired with the triple strength myomer system allowing the gaijin to feel the fury of the Combine much sooner! Norsican Mekworks would like to submit a design based around being a stable gun platform. We have spared no expense in developing a unique tripod machine meant to provide accurate direct fire support even while on the move. It has also been developed around being part of a C3 network, work is currently under way at C3 master version of this design however this will require more time as the LB 10-X meant to replace the gauss to accommodate this change requires some more adjustments. We appreciate that most technicians do not have experience with a tripod design but we believe that the advantages this would bring will speak for itself.

Here at Macho Mech Industries we have discovered that those Clanners, the so called children of Kerensky, are nothing more than a bunch of panzys who are have more in common with your average woman, can't take a punch! So we have developed a design to exploit this weakness. The Fisto is meant to charge towards its opponent and beat the ever living crap out of them using manly fists! Utilizing 16 tons of in testing hardened armor, this beauty will take a beating like no other mech and still keep coming at them! Triple strength myomer is used to offset the reduction of speed as well as amply any punches! We did briefly consider the use of an ER weapon on this thing but that may have encouraged pussy ass skirmishing so it was struck off early in development but if you want it well we can fit it, just expect our sales representative to call you a poofter! If you are concerned about replacement hardened armor well just find your nearest FedCom ladyboy and slap him silly till he coughs up more! The Fisto, any fat bastard could pilot this thing! To be honest I was actually shocked just how much was available with a 3055 year date once you switched from standard to advanced tech. You'd think if they were going to make all this stuff available so early they'd have had fun with more prototype units in fluff. I know some stuff like Prometheus was a thing but they are so ancient and long forgotten nobody remembers they exist.

I just decided to make this as example. It costs 42,627,015 C-bills and has a direct neural interface cockpit. If you combine all the modifiers of quirks, targeting computer, and with using VDNI implants a 4/5 pilot essentially becomes 1/4 and if you use a prototype DNI implant becomes a 0/2. It also can survive multiple strikes from gauss rifle hits without even going internal including even surviving a gauss hit to the head. All with stuff that is available in 3055.

I haven't had a good look at core rules but I think some of this is also about to move from advanced to standard tech.

Far too many are trying to meet the Clanners with ER Large Lasers when we know their Medium Lasers perform nearly as well.
There is only one Weapon System in the Inner Sphere that still has parity: The Gauss Rifle!
Thus we present a Mech we feel is worthy of the Title:
Clan Buster
CL-BST 01
Ambusher
55 tons
Bad Reputation (Clan), Jettison Capable Weapon (Gauss Rifle)
BV2: 1,726
Dry Cost: 9,952,757 C-bills

The Clan Buster is a maneuverable, well-armored Gauss Rifle platform that can hit Clanners at their preferred Range before fading back into Heavy Cover.
So infuriating is this tactic that the Clan Buster has already gained the infamy of the Clans, as it forces them into close quarters Melee, where the Clan Busters Jumpjets, Hatchet, and dual Medium Lasers can get to work exploiting any holes the Gauss Rifle has punched.
The volatile Gauss Rifle is Jettison-capable, allowing the Mech Warrior the option to drop it when it's 16 round Magazine runs dry, while a Small Pulse Laser on the same arm give it some anti-infantry capability.

>To be honest I was actually shocked just how much was available with a 3055 year date once you switched from standard to advanced tech
To be fair, even using "Standard" tech in stuff like MegaMek still has stuff like Light Ferro-Fibrous and XL Gyros showing up as options even though they were in prototype stages.
I had a really cool design worked out with Light Ferro-Fibrous but when I started checking over everything, most of the shit I was using was in Prototype stage but it said that nowhere in MegaMek or MekFactory.
Makes it a bit harder to design for, at least before OP said they were allowing those prototypes if I understood "If you are correct, I didn't exclude prototypes" in >>98298730 right.

We here at Scuttlebug Industries LLC are proud to announce the Toothpick TH-P1K, a novel, energy-based fire support medium quadmech. Incorporating a whopping THREE large lasers which you can fire all day thanks to our incorporation of double heat sinks (DHS) and accurately thanks to our state-of-the-art traversal and targeting systems, the TH-P1K represents a potent dose of mobile, low-profile, AFFORDABLE sustained firepower based almost entirely on designs and principles that have been proven and battle-tested for centuries. Two small lasers are also provided for convenience and to more adequately fulfill the terms of the tender, but alternative configurations are also available on demand. Due to the atypical nature of the ejection system of the TH-P1K, it is highly recommended for all customers to purchase the Ejection Training Course supplemental material to avoid pilot injuries.

Easy to Maintain, Improved Life Support, Modular Weapons, Ubiquitous
BV: 1601

Totally Legit Business, the future makers of the Lawman, present to you the golden love child of Succession Wars frugality and the Helm core's sweet nectar with a dash of Omni jealousy: the SHADOMNIATION!

Rest assured that the pronounciation is not a
quirk, but the program! Rebuilt from the reliable, ubiquitous Shadow Hawk chassis, our unique application of Endo Steel structure has given the Shadomniation arms every Elemental will envy, while an Extralight Engine and full complement of Jump Jets allows for respectable mobility. Eleven and a half tons of standard plate make sure that any Trueborn truly has to work for his kill, while the cavernous side torsos and generous supply of mounting brackets included in the purchase allow for extremely easy weapon swaps!

The Prime pattern variant of the Shadomniation can answer the Clan treat even at the longest ranges with the shoulder-mounted ERPPC, while an ECM and AMS thwart return fire. Up close, two medium laser and a quintet of SRM2s fed by two tons of CASE-protected ammunition provide withering firepower and the option of special munitions, which we recommend to exploit with Infernos against those pesky toads. Finally, a head-mounted Flamer provides a final defense against particularly lucky Elementals - although the Beagle Active probe makes sure that mere luck will not suffice.

The Alpha pattern (BV:1806, Cost: 10.707.282) is a sniper and replaces the electronic warfare equipment and missiles with a second ERPPC and a third medium laser, augmented by a total of fourteen Double Heat Sinks.

Meanwhile the Bravo Pattern (BV: 1599, Cost: 10.166.819 crams a mammoth AC20 into the shoulder mount and adds two medium lasers and a small one to the already arm-mounted mediums and the Flamer.

Buy smart. Buy classy. Buy Totally Legit.

We live in a time of rapidly advancing technologies, as demonstrated by the wide array of prototype technologies that are being showcased today. So even more important than building the best 'mech of today, is to build a 'mech that will be able to rapidly adopt the weapons that shall be coming within the next decade. Yet innovation in Omnimechs has been too slow in our eyes and the biggest culprit is that everyone needs to build their own frames at great expense. We aim to change

From the finest minds of Ray Leonard Technologies, we present to you Project RAVEN'S WING and version 1 of the AC system - an open source set of Pod specifications and easy access Gyro adjustments to allow any company to produce Pods for it and allow for absolute customization by pilots.

Balsaric Heavy Industries and Arbelast Incorporated have been the first companies to make systems. As you can see, we have five pod slots. In the Prime Configuration, this comes in the Left Arm's ER Small Lasers, the Left Torso's ER PPC, the Center Torso's Jump Jet, the Right Torso's CASE and Artemis IV LRM, and the Right Arm's Retractable Blade. Combined, this is 15.5 Tons and [13 Crits] of Pod Space that your world's companies to tailor to.

We have further improved the systems with Multi-Trac capabilities and nimble movement for aggressive assaults. You will notice that part of how we achieved our speed is from the jets always being enabled at some level. A less skilled may have some troubles - especially if damage harms the cooling - but in the hands of a skilled pilot, this 'mech can dance through its foes.

We will build the cores. Your worlds will tailor them.

Corean Enterprises in partnership with Jalastar Aerospace presents the Tesserarius, a medium weight trooper design aimed as a reliable and affordable replacement for those who lost significant amount of material during the initial Clan push into the Inner Sphere. The Tesserarius shares many components with our Centurion line meaning that replacement parts are never far out of reach. The redesigned chassis allows the mech to present a much narrower target to enemy fire while still retaining the reliable firepower of the Centurion that makes it equally at home in frontline work or garrison duty. 9 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor combined with C.A.S.E. offers a significant increase in protection and double heatsinks add superior cooling over antiquated Succession War era designs. While the bulk of Centurion production has been earmarked for Federated Commonwealth forces we are prepared to open up a dedicated line to produce the Tesserarius for those seeking long term mercenary contracts.

Able to inflict potentially just over 7 gauss rifle hits worth of damage to an enemy in a charge attack typically by ramming into them pelvis first! To assist in its vigorous assaults the Thruster is equipped with a searchlight to help distract their opponent rather than shed light in dark places. Due to a combination of MASC and supercharger this beauty can collide with any target at 216kph instantly turning them and often the pilot into paste! Slop Industries returns with a well armored and highly-mobile direct fire weapons platform capable of engaging opponents at the long ranges favored by Clan opponents. Long story short, we poached some engineers from General Motors' Rakshasa project to copy the Clans' famed Mad Cat.

The Vaisravana (or as some of our staff have taken to calling it, the "Mad Kitten") is a scaled-down version of its original inspiration, but retains the same primary armament of a pair of extended range large lasers, mated to a chassis capable of a maximum speed of 97.2kph, and sufficient double heat sinks to remain heat-neutral firing both lasers at a running pace. The shoulder-mounted LRM racks of the original have been replaced with four-tube SRM launchers to discourage the enemy from closing the distance, while a pair of small lasers underslung below its main weapons provides a close range backup option should ammunition run short.

While our efforts to replicate a Clan chassis necessarily complicate the availability of replacement parts, the striking silhouette of the Vaisravana may just convince enemy Mechwarriors that they are facing its larger cousin, particularly with a Guardian ECM suite jamming their sensors.

Producer: General Motors
Quirks: Flawed Cooling, No/Minimal Arms, Stabilized Weapon (Gauss Rifle), Directional Torso Mount (Gauss Rifle)

The General Motors Switchblade is designed to be a workhorse battlemech mobile, well-armored, and highly lethal out to long ranges. The Switchblade is the culmination of all of the advancements since the discovery of the Helm Memory Core with an endosteel chassis, ferro-fibrous armor, and an XL engine. The Primary armament of the Switchblade and what gives the mech its name is its shoulder-mounted gauss rifle, both stabilized and designed to be able to be "flipped" backwards, threatening anyone who manages to outflank the Switchblade. The secondary armament are a pair of ER large lasers in the center and left torso allowing sustained fire at long ranges. The concentration of its armament in its torso makes disabling the Switchblade difficult without destroying the head or center torso of the heavily protected mech outright. 11 double heat sinks meanwhile means some heat management is required to keep the mech cool under sustained combat load and the cooling system is unfortunately delicate for its design.

Overall the Switchblade is able to use its range and accuracy even at speed to engage the clans on its own terms while still being capable of effectively engaging in close combat and under less than ideal circumstances.

I feel like we are going this the wrong way. How do we improve upon perfection? By giving it the armor of an assault mech! Using incomplete records about the Griffin 2N as a basis you get the ultimate in multirole medium trooper. The Fusigon Longtooth ER PPC allows it to strike at targets at range while a pair of TharHes 4 Packs gives added close range punch including the ability to fire inferno warheads to deal with elementals. Sixteen and a half tons of hardened armor lets it absorb damage that mechs much heavier than it can barely stand up to and six jump jets give it added mobility.

I'm hoping that at some point in the future we do a pre-2500 Mech design, like in 2470 or 2480. People only just figured out light 'mechs with the Mackie only about 30 years old, half the equipment's primitives or prototypes, and no one knows what a good or bad 'mech design really is.

I say 2470 because I think MechFactory doesn't go before 2468 and MegaMek seems to have problems loading anything before 2458 when it comes to Primitives. At least for .51.00

Could even be early enough for people to be making Tanks and the like advertised as killers of the 'mech concept.

Admittedly, it might lean a bit too close to Introtech unless there's some real strong flavor focus.
>>
>>98302824
It does have some stuff like rifles. But yeah I'll have to see what Meklab has before I throw out early and SL designs
>>
>>98302824
So basically a primitive mech design challenge? Could be fun.
>>
>>98302865
Set primitive to 2460 and meklab will work fine.
>>
>>98302869
Yeah, though it is a shame that this theoretical challenge couldn't be placed in 2450. But MegaMek throws up errors if you try to set primitives to that early (looks like something to do with Structure?) and fails to load any 'mechs before the ARC-1A in 2458 and even then still has troubles. That's before the also mentioned issues like MekFactory just does not let you go that far back that may persist in other stuff.

Really prevents anyone from larping as a tank/aerospace/etc design calling Battlemechs a mere fad and be taken at least semi-seriously.
>>
>>98302824
>>98302895
Compromise and call it a 2475 challenge? Not so far back that MegaMek totally shits itself but far back enough that the BNC-3E is still being produced against all better judgement and jump jets are the new hotness.
>>
>>98303800
Banshee 3E is one of the strongest mechs available in 2475. Think about that for a second. It has the speed of a medium mech, firepower of a heavy mech, armor of an assault mech and it also doesn't overheat. It's the Mad Cat of the Age of War.
>>
>>98304088
>~9.5M C-bills for an AC/5, a PPC and 4/6/0

If someone is dumb enough to let the 95-ton assault mech get close enough to take them apart then sure gg no re but dear god that PRICE. You know what I'd procure as an alternative to one (1) BNC-3E in 2475? An entire lance of (that is to say four (4)) SWD-1. At a LOWER cost I get four (4) AC/5s, four (4) LRM-5s and eight (8) MLs at 3/5/0

>It has the speed of a medium mech,
Granted.

>firepower of a heavy mech,
It's about on par with the fucking GRF-1A and certainly out-maneuvered by it.

>armor of an assault mech
No argument there.

>and it also doesn't overheat.
"Massively under-gunned" is another way to phrase it.

>It's the Mad Cat of the Age of War.
Are you high? The MadCat weighs as much as a MAD-3R but has double the BV2 and almost four times the sticker price for a damn good reason while the BNC-3E is a cunt-hair off from weighing as much as a Mackie while having an almost identical BV and somehow being even more expensive.
>>
>>98305306
Cost isn't actually the primary deciding factor for anything. There's a reason America buys F-35s instead of spamming F-16s or buys Abrams instead of keeping old M60s. Even in battletech it isn't true, it's why massively expensive battlemechs see widespread adoption.

Is it a factor? Sure, but its rarely the deciding factor because often times the deciding factor is sheer ability to build mechs or availability of competent pilots, especially after the First Succession War meant that any mech was better than simply not having mechs so it wasn't a choice between one mech costing 8M and three mechs costing 2M it was a case of one mech costing 8M or one mech costing 2M.
>>
>>98305858
well, cost is a factor, or cost-benefit is to be specific
an M60A3 was 1.5M in 1989, an M1A1 was 4M in 1989
but the lack of HEAT protection on the M60A3 means its way more likely to be knocked, and higher attrition means higher crew replacement, and each crewman costs hundreds of thousands to train each
so long-term costs in a cold war gone hot situation isnt actually 3:1 like it would seem on paper but more like 2:1 or 1:1 depending on how prevalent losses to RPGs would be, and at that point the M1 actually seems like a bargain considering it comes with a bigger gun
>>
>>98305306
And one must remember being able to use the Mech ITSELF as a weapon is also an asset; If all else fails, shoulder check the fuckers.
>>
>>98305306
Anon what are the options in 2475 though? The only things that can really think about standing up to it is the 2R Archer and 7A Mackie. Everything else is a primitive or a joke.
For that era designs were progressing fast and for a very brief moment in time the 3E Banshee was top dog. Give it a few years and I'd make an argument that the 2E Ymir steals its crown till the next best thing comes along. Reminds me of the late 19th century warship construction where by the time something entered service it was already on its way to becoming obsolete.
>>
>>98305858
>Cost isn't actually the primary deciding factor for anything.
Cost is a HUGE factor. Quibbling over nickels and dimes is stupid but several million C-bills per-unit isn't that.

>There's a reason America buys F-35s instead of spamming F-16s or buys Abrams instead of keeping old M60s.
Because even at the price point they represent more bang for the buck.

>Even in battletech it isn't true, it's why massively expensive battlemechs see widespread adoption.
Most expensive 'mechs also generally represent good value, which the BNC-3E doesn't. Cut the price by a third and it's "unconventional" instead of "embarrassing".

>>98306074
>Anon what are the options in 2475 though?
In the same exactly niche? Nothing. The BNC-3E is great if you're either the anvil or the hammer and it's hard to understate the psychological effects of something the size of an apartment building sprinting at you while cracking its knuckles menacingly. However, outside of the niche of "alpha strike until charging distance is reached" it didn't fare so well. It was outgunned and matched in speed by heavies and out-sped by mediums and god help you if any part of your bag of tricks stops working because of terrain or criticals or whatever. To answer the question: in 2475 I'd rather have a MSK-7A (depending on what "late 2400s" means), or even just a 6S retrofitted with standard armor and a standard PPC. Good heat management, the same amount of armor and massively increased firepower and all it costs is going to 3/5.

>For that era designs were progressing fast and for a very brief moment in time the 3E Banshee was top dog.
Oh, sure. As a punchbot in particular it's STILL terrifying.

>Give it a few years and I'd make an argument that the 2E Ymir steals its crown till the next best thing comes along.
Seems about right.

>Reminds me of the late 19th century warship construction where by the time something entered service it was already on its way to becoming obsolete.
I love that about the AoW.

Duelist DLS-1T
Skirmisher
55t
Improved Cooling Jacket (both ERPPCs), Difficult to Maintain, Non-Standard Parts
1751 BV
6,116,507 C-Bills

With sufficient effort, parity with Clan designs can be reached. The true challenge has always been sustainment. Introducing the Duelist, the first medium-class BattleMech to stand toe-to-toe with the Clans at long range. Bearing a pair of ERPPCs, and armored to withstand the same in return, the Duelist dictates the pace of battle with its five jump jets, allowing it the breathing room to manage the immense heat load of such a heavy armament. If forced into closer range, its battery of ER Medium Lasers output similar destructive potential at an even higher tempo, and at point-blank, its pair of flamers level the field again by denying them the use of their full arsenal.

No one weapon, even a BattleMech, will ever constitute a full combined arms force, and we encourage you to peruse our catalog for other pieces to your tactical puzzle. But today, we are proud to add the Duelist to that list: a 'Mech that will fight and survive in the space where the Clans consider themselves most advantaged.
>>
This late 2400 discussion gives me an idea for a potential AoW design challenge suggestion. What if you were tasked with designing a heavy or assault mech with tech available in 2475 but if you are using introtech rather than primitive the engine has to be above 320 in rating because the smaller more reasonable weight efficient engines haven't been invented/aren't available yet?
>>
>>98307084
Funny thing is, with all the talk about the Banshee and the late 2400s, I alteady built thhat 'mech yesterday.

Let's let the current prompt run its course first though.
>>
>>98307084
320 might be too high, as the ARC-2R is a non-primitive in standard production with a 280 in 2474 and there's also the similar CRS-6B with a 300 in 2473. And in 2475 specifically, there's the Battleaxe BKX-7K with another 280 and a Hammerhands HMH-3D with a 225.

MegaMek also lists the WSP-1A with its 120, but the details on that one is that its prototyping started in 2471 but didn't finish until 2504. So that probably shouldn't count.

May want to do 220 instead? That gives Introtech ones the walk speed options of:
>60: 4/5/6
>65: 4/5/6
>70: 4/5
>75: 3/4/5
>80: 3/4/5
>85: 3/4
>90: 3/4
>95: 3/4
>100: 3/4
3s and 4s seem to be the most common on 'Mechs at the time, so that at least seems like a fine line to set things at for what would evolve past Primitives.
>>
>>98307353
So the idea is that primitives wouldn't have any restrictions but standard tech will, otherwise a 280 or 300 engine makes things far too easy since you can just build a Marauder, Warhammer, hell even Banshee 3S.
>>
>>98306394
>Most expensive 'mechs also generally represent good value, which the BNC-3E doesn't. Cut the price by a third and it's "unconventional" instead of "embarrassing".
The Highlander HGN-732 was the 13th most expensive mech of the Star League era, the HGN-732b was the 8th. For a similar price you could afford 2 Galahad GLH-2Ds which would have similar mobility and bring to bear a combined four gauss rifles vs the Highlander's one gauss rifle, an LRM-20 and some medium lasers. Despite this the Galahad never saw anywhere near the widespread adoption as the Highlander and only three variants were made and only one ancient design (the 2D) survives to the "modern" era.

Also it's important to compare the Banshee to its peers and in its role, if you compare a single assault mech to a lance of mediums of course it would lose, it's why BV is used instead of C-Bill cost for balance and even then why opponents should have similarly sized forces. Is the Banshee good? No. However cost isn't the reason, it isn't good because you have the mobility of a heavy, the firepower of a medium, and the footprint of an assault mech.

The Mackie costs about the same and for the era it's a great mech, a PPC, 2x LL, and an AC/20, but at the same time I would still take a trio or lance of Swords over a single Mackie. However that isn't a reasonable tradeoff as in a realistic situation that lance of Swords would require greater logistical support assets. If you want three mechanics per mech than you'll need a combined 16 personnel for the sword lance vs four people for the Mackie just to start. This gets worse if you assume say a battalion of Swords vs a company of Mackies where the battalion would require three dropships to the Mackies' one with additional staff for said ships.
>>
>>98307084
As an aside I love redesigns. Something like
>The year is 3150 and a cache of venerable Age of War Mackies has been rediscovered. A company has expressed interest in upgrading them to post-blackout standards and has requested you submit a design. If approved you will receive royalties as well as a single lance of the upgraded battlemechs. Rules and limitations

>The modifications are intended to be relatively quick and easy, the company doesn't want to waste time with complete engine refits or chassis rebuilds, thus rebuilding the entire structure, replacing the engine, or the myomer structure is beyond the scope of desired modifications (no endosteel chassis, compact, L/XL/XXL engine, TSM, or gyro replacements
>While clan tech can potentially be acquired for the project it should be kept to a minimum as there may be difficulty in acquiring large amounts of clan systems
>There are no cost limits, but attempts should be made to minimize costs, weapons and systems replaced will be sold off or scrapped to make up for costs (if you want you can calculate the actual costs of modifications and subtract costs of scrapped systems, but that's purely optional)
>Use advanced building rules
>>
We are getting some good ideas for future design scenarios. We also have a good crop of mechs for this one

I suppose that makes sense. Looking at the Weight/Speed Optimization chart, the optimums do look to be more fairly balanced for the 320 (right of green valid for Introtech) compared to 220 (right of yellow valid for Introtech) and cause some interesting balance points in what remains.
>>
>>98307908
how do you read this chart?
>>
File: MechOptimizer.png (591 KB, 1163x2989)
591 KB PNG
>>98308039
On the left column is the various tonnages of 'mechs in the standard weight range.

The top row is the various walking speeds you can get for that tonnage of 'mech, based on what engines are allowed.

The various boxes are how much free weight you have leftover for a 'mech after adding in the fusion engine needed to reach that specific speed, before armor/equipment/heat sinks/etc are added. So for example if you make a 55 ton 'mech with a walking speed of 3, you will have 38.5 tons available to spend on equipment.

The red numbered boxes on the chart are the places where the most tonnage is available for a given speed. So for a 4 Speed 'mech, the highest free tonnage you have is a threeway tie at 75, 80, or 85 tons with 42.5 tons to spend. Of note is that there can be other factors that shift the math, such as if you are using Jump Jets, a 55 ton 'mech at 5 speed beats a 60 ton 'mech at 5 speed because the 55 tonner's jump jets are 0.5 tons/JJ while a 60's are 1.0 ton/JJ.

That one I posted there is the one for Standard fusion engines, but ones have been made for every type of engine. I've attached those all here.
>>
>>98308120
Oh, and the reason that the charts have different lengths is that the max engine size is 400, but on some of the lower weight 'mech tonnages, they hit a limit on how big of one they can squeeze in there. If you look on the bottommost, even with an XXL engine, a 20 Ton 'mech can only go up to a 360 engine.

I will note these charts are for Battlemechs as that's the main thing this thread is focused on. Industrial, LAM, and Quadvees are somewhat close with a bit less free weight typically, but I know Industrial and Quadvees have their a few other engine types not covered. This also doesn't count for superheavies and other vehicle types have their own math to them.

Though as a fun fact for it, Tanks have approximately equal free tonnage to 'Mechs at 20 tons and are better below that point. It's at 25 tonnage and above that they fall behind on a free tonnage perspective.
>>
>>98308120
for a 90ton mech with a 3/5/ movement if I use a compact engine I'd get 53.25 free tonnage? or does that not include every thing else, gyro, sensors etc..?

Awe AWE-001
Trooper
55t
1673 BV
5,566,257 C-Bills

Taking cues from the storied Awesome and the long-serving workhorse medium mechs of the inner sphere, Janus Industries presents the next generation of trooper mechs: the Awe.

Utilizing widely available components and materials, the Awe offers an awe-inspiring combination of durability, mobility, and firepower. A brace of PPCs backed by a trio of Medium Lasers is the armament every great house has wanted for their mechs, and is now feasible at great scale with the reintroduction of double heat sinks. A 275 grade fusion engine backed by jump jets provides the gold standard of tactical mobility. 10 tons of ferro-fib armor without any ammo gives the Awe best-in-class longevity.

The Awe is not a fancy, exciting, or cutting-edge machine. It is a machine designed to win battles and win wars.

THE CASSIUS
5/8/2 movement to keep pace with those evasive clan mediums. But i hear you ask, what if they can run faster or jump higher? simply nail them with your RT Gauss rifle (2t of ammo)! high power and versatile range allows you to control the field and exploit cover.
But what if they close in to minimum range? well dear customer, we offer two solutions
1) overheat the cocky energy-heavy bastards with your three flamers
2) punch them
Thats right, just punch them! thanks to the tactical application of TSM and no cooling jackets, you can easily hit the threshold required to just punch them right the fuck out.

>Which do you think hit the challenge best?
In terms of being a fast mech with the range to take on Clanners while remaining effective at multiple ranges? I'm voting the Vaisravana >>98301357
>Which Design is your favorite?
The Switchblade >>98301452 While it's more of a dedicated sniper than an all-rounder, that's some exceptional firepower.

The Ullr. >>98298136 Always interesting to see a tripod mech.
>Which design is the meth baby this round?
Seems pretty obvious. >>98300315
>>
>>98310148
Ullr is neat enough, but is overloaded on positive quirks and is a bit narratively lean. Clan Buster is as formulaic as you can get for the challenge, plus Bad Reputation (Clan) is cheesy as a negative and feels egotistic, I guess? I'm probably phrasing it wrong, but it doesn't do it for me.
>>
>>98309647
Not gonna vote for my own design (switchblade) even if I think it wins in at least some of these categories.
>Which do you think hit the challenge best?
Awe AWE-001
Solid mobility, 2 PPCs, and 3 Medium lasers makes it a solid mech at short and long range, and at only 5 million C-bills and 55 tons.

>Which Design is your favorite?
Ullr UL-1R
Three legged mechs are rare so it's nice to see one and the gauss/PPC combo is nice, plus I love the C3 variant combo, especially because masters are hard to come by in general.

>Which design is most innovative
RAVEN'S WING RW-AC1
I think it's underarmed for its weight and cost, but mobile, nimble jumper, hard to pilot, and general mobility are cool.

>Which design is the meth baby this round?
Duelist DLS-1T
Call me no fun allowed, but I'm gonna avoid anything which tries too hard and go for the mech that's designed to be at least semi-competent even if its design is built around nearly overheating all the time. Plus I find the ability to go kamikaze fun, and being able to just jump behind an aggressive clan mech and dump 44 points of damage into their backside while your pilot gets literally cooked alive in his mech is a cool thing.
>>
>>98310191

I mean fair, but that's also why I paired it with Jumpjets, an off-hand Hatchet, and surprisingly the Small Pulse Laser in the same arm comes in rather handy.

>>98308369
That's correct, with the addendum of things rounding to the nearest .5 if you aren't in Experimental rules and using Fractional Accounting.
That does include gyro, cockpit, structure, and so on, though only the standard ones. So if you switch over to Endo-Steel, you get a bit more tonnage. Same with XL gyros, small cockpits, and so on.

I tried very hard to not shamelessly vote for my own bid, but I still believe in the Duelist >>98306777. The Vaisravana has a decent weapons array and very good speed, but falls to two Clan PPCs to the side torso. The Switchblade his higher non-overheat output, but no jump jets and lower endurance again due to the XL. The Griffin is the most comparable in average performance, and slightly faster to boot, but twice the price per unit and without the potential for an exceptional pilot to work wonders on the heat curve. The only other option on the field even capable of forcing a pilot check at 20+ hexes is the Ullr, which may be a little too far ahead of its time. The key word of this challenge was to survive the Clans, and the Duelist offers the best mixture of the endurance to fight, the mobility to disengage, and the price to do it at scale.
>2
Despite my misgivings on its survivibility, the Vaisravana >>98301357 just has that cool factor.

I mean if your pitch is budget conscious, why go with ER PPCs AND a brace of ER Medium Lasers?
One of the ER PPC's biggest strengths is lacking a Minimum Range.

Contingency planning, mostly. If you are forced or the situation encourages closing the range, the ERMLs also put out 20 damage, but don't require the jump-and-hide turn to cool down that you're a lot less likely to get up close. You have options to play with bracket fire if you still want one of the big 10-point hits. If the contract hadn't specified multi-range, then yes, full sniper build with just the PPCs, but true to its name, it is a duelist, and I regard skill responsiveness with the heat curve to be a key aspect of an engaging duel. Also "it's half the price, but shoots half as often" is just funny.
>>
>>98311155
>If you are forced or the situation encourages closing the range, the ERMLs also put out 20 damage, but don't require the jump-and-hide turn to cool down that you're a lot less likely to get up close.
Yeah, but you could get the same performance out of regular Medium Lasers for nearly half as much Heat and slightly less Range you aren't going to be using in those situations anyways.
>>
>>98311196
I considered squeezing the range bracket for everything it was worth while closing to be acceptable, but I do see what you're getting at. It would make heat management once the flamers are in play a bit simpler, but my first impulse from having the extra heat capacity from downgraded lasers would be even more of them, and I wasn't going to rip the armor for that. Perhaps a flaw, but a fitting one for a 'Mech that's best piloted with a saline IV hooked up.
>>
>>98311246
>It would make heat management once the flamers are in play a bit simpler
Honestly I was thinking more in terms of managing your Jump Jet Heat; I know people like to abuse the fact that Heat Movement Penalties don't apply to Jump Jets, but you are straight up +6 Heat firing the PPCs BEFORE any movement.
17 Heat from 4 Medium Lasers and a full Five Hex Jump makes that a lot more manageable that the 25 Heat you get for doing the same with ERs.

Anon failed to sell it but after looking at it closely it has features I like. Cause anon also failed to disclose the base configuration I'm judging it as a standard rather than omni design.
This wins out for me for two key factors. It takes into account Elementals are a big threat and it can deal with them. Second it knows it won't win a standup fight truly so TAG lets it call down an Arrow IV on an enemy that it can't beat. This would make a really good addition to any force.

>2) Which Design is your favorite?
Vaisravana VSR-1N >>98301357

It feels like an advanced tech demonstration model and does it well. Its armor is a complete joke though and feel we need to make a rule that if you submit an omni a base config with pod space should be shown.

>4) Which design is the meth baby this round?
Super Assassin ASN-31 >>98297295
because it feels like something either Comstar or the WoB would have come up with and use out of severe desperation for equipment and fits their NARC fetish yet is still a deathtrap.

Overall some decent designs here, some would make good garrison units. Don't think anything kind of stands out as a true winner to me as I was finding it a tossup although a few honorary mentions to anons trying to incorporate electronic equipment. I am surprised nobody attempted to use stealth armor if I am honest and I was hoping for a little more madness.
>>
Just an FYI, I was the anon that came up with the Abomination and didn't actually mean for it to be a serious entry to be included but since anons are enjoying it I'll just remind everyone it has effectively got 296pts of armor. Each hardened armor pip can take two points of damage.
>>
>>98310902
>the Duelist offers the best mixture of the endurance to fight, the mobility to disengage, and the price to do it at scale
i looked closely at the duelist, it's twin PPCs make 26 heat per turn and it can only sink 22. i dont know clan mediums well so im not sure what it expects to fight, but it feels to me that a peer opponent would have two clan PPCs and clan doubles, and therefore would just dominate it in the DPS race. it's definitely tough and mobile and well priced, but it cant leverage those advantages because it cant move and shoot, cant sustain it's damage, and even if it wins it cant be repaired

More ways could approach it and doesn't have to follow the primitive idea. Do feel we need some restrictions but not overly limited to encourage some creativity.

>1:Which do you think hit the challenge best?
Gotta toot my own horn here with the Shadomniation because parity with clantech is just not possible, and with the Hellbringer and Elementals being rather ubiquitous on the other side, electronics warfare and BA have to be accounted for. I did not see much of either in the thread.

>2;Which Design is your favorite?
The Switchblade has a certain charme and would make a good partner for many of the other suggestions here.
>3:Which design is most innovative
Ironically the one that kept closest to the roots, the Griffin 3X armor brick.

>4: Which design is the meth baby this round?
I challenged anon to add a Spike to his 'mech and he delivered that and more, so the Thruster has my vote, but my personal honorable mention is the Vaisravana. It's just like a Rakshasa - hopelessly outperformed by any aspect it seeks to imitate - and any clanner who sees it will toss Zell right out the window.

>>98311437
Yes, the Shadomniation is a standard battlemech, thus I went with "patterns" rather than "configurations," and "variants" felt too restrictive for a 'mech built to swap the guns with little fuss.
>>
>>98313736
Manufacturer's recommendation is to not fire PPCs and ERMLs at the same time; they are separate fire modes for separate ranges. If circumstances on the ground encourage otherwise, the option is there, because heat neutrality is frankly kinda boring. In a lot of ways, it's an Unseen cranked up to extended range via DHS, where you've got way too much gun to go around, and using the right combo at the right time is the key to making it work.
>>
>>98314964
For Age of War I don't feel like we really need any limitations, maybe a role like heavy cavalry or mobile assault mech or some sort of vanguard mech to match the Mackie.
>>
>>98316840
You'd be surprised just exactly what is available pre 2570.

Got FF as early as 2557
C.A.S.E. 2452
Active Probe 2560
DHS 2559
XL Engines 2556
Mech Mortars 2526
Endo-Steel 2480

and a fair amount of this stuff isn't just in prototype but full scale production. Even if a lot of advanced weapons aren't going to be available till the Reunification War loads of weight saving components are already available.
>>
>>98317095
Sure, but do those require built in limits? I think something like "Davionman wants something to surpass the Mackie in a head to head fight" is fine as a premise for example, and I don't see anything abuseable in the same manner of CLPLs or improved jump jets.
>>
>>98317838
DHS alone let you build something akin to an Awesome 9Q during the Age of War. That would be an absolute rape machine. Have to be careful about what restrictions are otherwise you get another 3055 situation where anon forgot just how much stuff was in prototype by then.
>>
>>98317963
OP here, I am looking into restrictions and such. Mek lab does allow stuff that wasn't actually available for some reason like Head Turrets and Cases, although Case P was around only for the TH.

TH had access to most standard tech by 2470, other nations lagged behind however. I am going to be a bit detailed in the challenge or someone will just make a standard mech with stuff like Head Turrets as Meklab says it's available. I'll be using the stuff from Interstellar Operations: Alternative Eras for setting what is and is not actually available. If it says it not, it's simply not no matter what Meklab says.
>>
I really loved the MW4 games and maybe wanna get into Battletech, but most of the mechs look way too humanoid. Like they have fists and punch each other. Some of them are even "holding" guns with 5 fingered hands. Tbh I wish stuff looked more Realistic like the stilted lumbering weapons platforms in the video games. Even the Atlas, the most humanoid mech there, didn't actually move its fingers. Dunno why I'm posting, I'm just stimming the thread is cool I liked the outfitting aspect of the video games too.

I know that the Nebula California books have lists like this to define building custom units, pic related being their Halo one.

Perhaps something similar could be made via a google sheets or similar program for a quick reference? It may admittedly be mainly useful in the banlist form of "<X Program> says <Y Thing> is available but its not/restricted, so it's banned" for any designs in Battletech canon, but if we ever end up doing something like a custom California Nebula region then it could do the original allowlist purpose.

Maybe do something like say, Cells are green for when its an Allowlist where you can only use what's on the list, while Cells are red for when its a Banlist where you can't use what's on the list.
>>
>>98318413
Many are but there are tons of non-huminoid designs. BT has a lot of units, over 700 mech designs with alternative versions reaching 3000 or more. You can field totally non humanechs and even pick ones that look more "realistic", such as the infantry support Gún to left.
>>
>>98318441
.at not be a bad idea. Meklab does most of this once you switch to primartive mod. There are a few items it still allows that are not available though for some reason. I have been going though the IO:AE book to run down some of it. I think the issue might be the year for some of it as the TH had standard mech tech by 2475. So may just go 2468 and see if that fixes most of the Meklab issue
>>
>>98317963
>DHS alone let you build something akin to an Awesome 9Q during the Age of War. That would be an absolute rape machine.
Yes, which is ultimately the goal for this. Moreover restrictions for the sake of restrictions are boring, if you want to exclude specific tech at least use a justification like >>98307518 where the design concept is why stuff like XL engines and endosteel are forbidden.

Also as far as I can tell DHS weren't used on any mechs until the Star League whether or not they existed, same thing with XL engines.
>>
Idea for the next challenge:
Incendiary mech to replace the Firestarter, light to medium class mech, era is dark age.
>>
>>98319327
>Also as far as I can tell DHS weren't used on any mechs until the Star League whether or not they existed, same thing with XL engines.
Helepolis was the first to be refitted with DHS and and this was done during the Age of War. Galahad shows up just at the very end of the Age of War and is the second mech to mount them but first to be built with them in mind from the get go.
XL is proving harder to track. I think actually it might be a vehicle funny enough as I am pretty sure there was an Age of War tank that had it from memory.

You have now triggered my autism where I now want to go and find which unit was the first to mount certain equipment.

>>
>>98319808
DHS prototypes are TH 2559, were not in production to 2567 and only for the TH. It only became common tech in 3045.

XL engine is 2556 and 2579, TH only again. They really held onto that advanced tech hard.

Those years might help you hunt down the units.

I think a "fuck BA and fuck infantry too" design challenge could be fun because it's different than usual mech combat, but I don't play with infantry enough to know whether this is a solved problem of "apply flamer/plasma/mg to the forehead"
>>
>>98320119
BA makes it much harder because they take a bit of fire to bring down and in my experience can be much more annoying than infantry.
>>
OP here, rough day. I'll tally up the votes and get the next challenge up tomorrow
>>
>>98320119
Inferno SRMs pretty much are the ultimate expression of fuck your infantry and BA as well. Later eras there are heat resistant units though that is what frag is for. Basically a pair of MML launchers on legs would make a fantastic infantry and BA hunter.

Lets do something a bit different than planned for this one

>>Scenario Three
The Year is 3078 and the Jihad rages across the inner sphere. Worlds burn, nations splinter and manufacturing suffers as factories are destroyed and supply lines falter.

While modern production suffers, many less sophisticated worlds and factories have another option. So called "Retrotech", reaching back to the days before the Star league, mech technology existed in primitive form. Fusions engines, cockpits, gyros and armor that can be made in less modern factories. And that is just what you are going to do, be it for your worlds own defense or to sell to the inner sphere at large, with technology not seen since the age of war you are gonna build a mech!

>>Requirements:
You are to build a mech using the primitive mech rules, you can access them in Meklab by using Edit>Switch Unit type> primitive/Retro.

Now while the unit is primitive , it is 3078, you can use whatever gear allowed as a advanced unit. Do try to come up with some narrative reason, I believe in your creativity. You can do it.

As for the Unit, any mass, size category, role or even price is allowed. You can get creative with the Retrotech design. Do keep in mind if you are trying to sell it if your Retro Taiwan "M-Raider" and it costs as much or more than an actual Marauder, that isn't gonna sell.

Built around the affordable core technologies of a Primitive Fusion Engine and equally easily produced structure, and dedicating a fifth of its own weight to reliable Standard Armor, this upper-end medium workhorse marries the movement profile and hardiness of the venerable Grasshopper to the intimidating form of the beloved Hauptmann.

A Heavy PPC on the right shoulder packs the cockpit-crunching punch of a Gauss Rifle without the concern for ammunition or capacitor explosions, while paired Medium and Small Lasers provide sufficient punch to scatter toads - and of course we included the laser cigar!

And did I mention that for a price undercutting the ancient Shadow Hawk 2H you get a 'mech that hits harder in either range bracket and jumps further while also carrying more armor and none of the explosive ballast?

The Humper is a modification of the Hunchback created to utilize parts from various civilian industry factories. Sacrificing some of the speed of the Hunchback the iconic rectangular weapon case which replaces its AC/20 with an AC/10 and LRM-10. This turns the close range brawler into a long-medium range mech capable of delivering as much damage as the iconic AC/20 at a longer range, albeit broken up between multiple missiles and an AC/10.

While not explicitly required the Humper is intended to be stocked with precision ammo which allows the battlemech superb accuracy to make up for a lack of volume fire and inexperienced pilots, veterans being in such short supply in these times. If there is a lack of precision ammo than conventional ammo stores will allow the Humper to maintain its fusilade for an extended time.

Easy to Maintain, Rugged 1, Bad Reputation, Difficult Ejection
Good evening, Your Highnesses. As the inheritor of the Swordsman's design and its surviving factory on Robinson, it is my honor to present you with the Zweihander; a revision of the venerable BattleMech that even our most overburdened supply lines can sustain.

The Zweihander's simplified frame and components can be maintained by anyone with a basic understanding of BattleMech engineering and manufactured in nearly any IndustrialMech factory. In place of the standard fusion reactor, a 145-rated Fuel Cell has been mounted to reduce strain on repair teams. We have similarly designed its ammunition bays to be compatible with missiles and rifle rounds from up to three centuries ago. Modern weapon systems allow the SWD-2's upgraded offensive capabilities to be retained even with these more basic components; One ton of missiles supply a MML5 pack, using a bin compatible with any SRM and LRM loads available. The arm-mounted machine guns are similarly fed by a half-ton of ammunition, and chambered in the same calibre that our infantry uses to further ease logistics. Even if ammunition can not be sourced, a Medium Laser over the shoulder and Sword carried in the right hand serve as reliable reserve weapons. Should conditions improve after deployment, an upgrade package to bring the Zweihander to previous standards can easily be prepared and installed with the appropriate facilities.

Seven years ago, the Word of Blake laid waste to my homeworld. A number of you have seen the damage in person. I say this not to beg for your pity or charity, but to remind you of the dire conditions in which we are still able to build the Zweihander. I have no doubt that countless more planets that have been ravaged by the Jihad would be able to do the same.

Superior Combat Arms and Munitions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Quikscell, took a look at the venerable Hatchetman and thought "What is the essence of the Hatchetman?" And we came to the conclusion that the answer is intimidation, and we knew we could intimidate on the cheap. While expenses were spared on the powerplant and construction, expenses were not spared on the jump jet system, allowing larger bounds. There's no replacement for displacement, and that extra mass goes into a hatchet capable of decapitating anything on the battlefield. How's that for intimidation?

But wait, there's more! S.C.A.M. worked with our maritime division to create a reversible swing-arm launcher firing a heavyweight missile that can also take a cockpit clean off. The mount is truly one of the mounts of all time. But nevermind that, in the heat of battle, your enemies are going to be wondering "did he fire 3 shots, or did he fire 4?"

Finally, there is a pulse laser in the head to allow you to "smoke on the ops" as well as defend from birds and crunchies.

All this can be yours for the low, low price of 5.1m c-bills, approximately 10% less than a factory fresh Hatchetman. Remember, the enemy has to be lucky every time your pull the trigger, you only need to get lucky once.

Here at Smenge Industries we know that when you have to go basic, you're not going to last on the modern battlefield. The armour is weak, your mobility is low. Planning for a sustained battle? Nah. Not happening. You have a machine here for the value of it's a mech, and that's better than not having one. Well, unless you have some modern tanks, those will shred. But you probably can't afford or get hold of those if you're here. You're here because you can't even get hold of good quality leftovers from before the Clans invaded and you still need a mech.

So with the Grunklor we offer what's essentially an armoured wedge with just enough mobility in its arms and legs, designed to do nothing more than point a reliable snubnose PPC right down the centreline to blast away with, and its baker's dozen of RL10s to hopefully fucking annihilate at least one thing of its tonnage or less. And hey, enough heat sinks to run cool whilst you're getting up close to unload, and you can still beat the shit out of things the old fashioned way if there's anything left of it.

Precentor Martial,
Per your instructions in the wake of Terra Firma's fall, I have conducted preparatory investigations into methods of increasing military output on Terra that can be conducted even in the event of a heretic invasion of the planet itself. Of particular note has been the possibilities in the application of "RetroTech", a phenomenon appearing in the Periphery and isolated sections of the Inner Sphere, involving the use of pre-Star League BattleMech technology to develop new 'Mech designs or re-introduce obsolete models, such as the Taurian Condordat's revival of the famed Toro. Conversion of civilian industry to produce equipment at such lower standards can be accomplished much more quickly than for modern BattleMechs, and I have identified several facilities that should be ideal for the task.

Attached alongside this document is an initial study in our first proposed model, a simplified version of the Grim Reaper-PR31 currently in use across the Militia. While the primitive engine masses thrice the Core Tek 275 XL, it retains the movement profile and C3 slave network of the Grim Reaper, allowing it to fill the same tactical role, and the compact design should allow the retention of the Gigi 200 chassis with no modification beyond gyroscope calibration. Exchanging the ER Large Laser for a Light PPC and Capacitor allows for similar battlefield performance under the significant mass restrictions imposed by the new engine, while the LRM-20 launcher will be replaced with a battery of 60 rocket tubes. Armor coverage will have to be reduced from 10.5 to 7.5 tons, along with the loss of the ER Medium Laser, Triple-Strength Myomer and CASE protection, but combined with the engine simplification, is expected to reduce production cost by over 50% per unit.

I eagerly await your approval to proceed.
May the Light of Blake shine upon us all.

MKR-1B Musketeer
Role: Sniper
Weight: 70 tons
BV 797
Cost: 5,289,550 C-Bills
Positive quirks: Easy to Maintain, Fast reload, improved long range targeting
Negative Quirks: Exposed Actuators, poor life support, weak head armor 1

Keystone Industrial mostly made tractors and farm equipment before the Jihad. But given the force fighting and opportunity, they decided to step into the mech business. Just using mostly retrotech and easily sourced parts they created their first mech, the Musketeer.

The Musketeer is a 70 ton mech powered by a primitive 255 fusion engine, allowing it a top speed of 54.3 kph. Keystone Industrial chose to arm it with quad medium rifles, supplied with 8 tons of ammunition, each arm holding 4 canisters that can be quickly changed. Paired with a modified MR-41 weather hawk targeting system, that improves the Musketeer’s long range accuracy. Backing up the rifles are a pair of chin mounted Sperry Browning machine guns for close in work and anti infantry action, while a death blossom 15 rocket launcher gives the Musketeer an extra one time punch. For protection the Musketeer depends on 11.5 tons of primitive armor made locally.

The Musketeer does have a few small flaws. Because the life support is based off the AR-34J cool master unit used in many of keystone Industrial agriculture products, it can be somewhat fragile in combat. And the canopy design of its cockpit causes some weakness in the cockpit armor .

However, these are minor when for just 5 million c-bills you can buy an easily maintained range unit for planetary defense.

Sharpshooter SHR-1
Sniper
65 Tons
BV 1367
Cost: 5,146,735
General Positive: Improved Targeting (Long)
General Negative: Weak Legs
Gauss Positive: Stabilized Weapon, Accurate Weapon
Gauss Negative: No Cooling Jacket (Level 2 of Cooling Jacket flaws)

What is before you is a mech designed around one specific thing, getting hard-hitting, accurate shots at long range regardless of its speed.

For that, we have built this 'mech around a Gauss Rifle, forgoing a cooling jacket entirely thanks to the low heat the weapon produces making the issues of doing so negligable at best, while amplifying its structural mounting and design to render it as accurate as possible. This is paired with designing the legs in a way that forgoes melee performance but aids in further stabilization for greater range.

Targetting data is further enhanced by this platform being able to be integrated into a C3 network, allowing for coordination of its shots upon targets outside of its visual range.

This is the first 'mech to be produced by Portland Heavy Industries. If this venture is successful, we shall be investing further in our capabilities to allow for the production of more contemporary components to further improve this platform.

Missile Boat
75 Tons
Extended Torso Twist, Nimble Jumper, Stable, No Ejection System, Poor Targeting (Short)
BV2: 1363
5,850,250 C-Bills

Presenting Atlas International's newest product, coming to a low-tech production facility near you! The Spritz!

Made in response to collapsing infrastructure and supply lines, and sold almost at cost to local militia forces, and licensed willy-nilly to anyone not aligned with those damned Wobbies, the Spritz is meant to leverage low-tech infrastructure to build a mech with 'modern' weaponry, while minimizing said tech-base's weaknesses and flaws. In particular, the Spritz is meant to sit in the back-line, lobbing missiles and rockets at a distance, where it's primitive armour isn't going to be put to the test. A pair of MML's sit in either torso, while a robust frame, sitting on either arm, allows a battery of rockets to be mounted and fired (though their position, while allowing to fast reloads in the field, means that each battery is rather exposed to enemy fire). A pair of Small X Pulse lasers, backed up by a Medium Laser, serve as anti-infantry repellent, while a pair of Anti-Missile Systems, one in either torso, help to reduce counter-battery fire.

In a vain attempt to help with the mech's lacking mobility, the mech has been equipped with improved jump jets - though, given the low power of the mech's reactor, this really comes off like trying to put lipstick on a pig. However, as Atlas International has noted, the mech isn't meant to be running in, or alone.

Grand Dragon DRG-1GF
Role: Juggernaut
Weight: 60 tons
Quirks: Extended Torso Twist, Stable, Narrow/Low Profile
BV: 1,199
Cost: 4,070,880 C-bills

Ishikawajima-Harima operating at 80% capacity, Matabushi Computing at 60%, BBP industries down to 5%. Warriors of the Combine I will not lie, the damage done to our Capital was great. Not one street has evaded desecration from the gaijin invaders. Now is not the time for sorrow but righteous fury as the Dragon is no stranger to war! Time and time again invaders have broken themselves upon our walls, think of the almighty Clans in 3050 or the Federated Commonwealth in 3039, now both shattered remains of their former glory! The Word of Blake will be no different! Honor the Dragon, take not one step back and keep on fighting! We will hold the line and then drive our enemies from our worlds as we have done countless times before! For the Combine!

To assist our people in their time of need Fukkyu Industries with assistance from Luthien Armor Works has created a new symbol of defiance. Taking the original Grand Dragon as a basis we have managed to mimic the firepower of with following adjustments. The rear facing laser has been faced forward and LRM replaced with an MRM launcher. As we have had to use what components we could readily source we knew we could not match the speed of the 1G so we have instead opted to make our model as resilient as possible, opting for near max armor protection and C.A.S.E. so that this design may keep fighting no matter what the enemy may throw at it. Due to the simplistic nature of all this we are able to create these machines very quickly and are willing to offer a machine to anyone who is ready to come to the aid of the Dragon. If you wish to serve the Combine and need a mech to help shore up defences, contact the Fukkyu Gaijin Guild located in the Fukkyu Gaijin zone in what remains of the Crane district on Luthien.

Mimir MIM-1A
Role: Brawler
40 Tons
Quirks: Cramped Cockpit, Exposed Actuators, Improved Sensors, Improved Communications
BV 738
3,148,880 C-bills

Norsican Mekworks believes there is a niche to be filled here by using retrotech to design an affordable yet effective infantry support battlemech. As a result we have developed the Mimir as a design to assist and fight alongside infantry. Armed heavily around the versatility of the multi missile launcher, two tons of ammunition in a C.A.S.E. protected bin allows the Mimir to carry a wide variety of ammunition types to deal with virtually any threat. A single ER medium laser gives it some additional ranged punch against hardened targets. Designed especially for city fighting the Mimir carries an extensive detection suite as well as communication package allowing it to coordinate with troops on the ground with flushing out hostile forces. Four jump jets gives it added mobility to assist in its movements around an urban environment and the mech itself is light enough to stand on some buildings a heavier mech would fall through. While the significant amount of electronics does make the cockpit rather spartan inside we believe the advantages it gives outweighs the negatives. Mounting 11 tons of armor the Mimir does offer ample protection against most expected threats and although we have had to cut back on armoring around the actuators which may make it seem like an appealing target for infantry, given its function and it is expected to work alongside infantry of its own we do not consider this a disadvantage.

BV 803
Cost: 3,608,325 C-Bills
Positive quirks: Easy to Maintain, low profile, stable
Negative Quirks: Exposed Actuators, non standard parts, no cooling jacket (MRM 10)

Ovan Motorworks, creators of such fine vehicles such as the Jífēng auto ,zhuǎnyí cycle and the Bōlàng zhe pleasure boat have taken up the duty to aid the Confederation in its time of need. Through the generosity of Lord Hsü, Ovan Motorworks has acquired Retrotech schematics and plans for the age of war Xanthos battlemech. With this knowledge we present our very first battlemech, the Stoat.

The Stoat is a low profile, stabled, easy to maintain quad mech capable of reaching speeds up to 86.6 KPH. The Stoat is protected by 9.5 tons of Zhang Dura-steel armor. The Stout carries a Jiàngyǔ 10 MRM and a set of blizefire longshot Extended range medium lasers mounted on a turret. This gives the Stoat unmatched arcs of fire. The stost mounts two forward facing
Series XII Rotary machine guns for anti infantry action.

Fiddler Crab FCB-78
Role Ambusher
Weight 45 tons
BV 786
Cost: 2965250 c-bills
+Quirks: low profile
-Quirks: exposed actuators

FTME Fiat-Trabant Meckwerk Enwicktlung, a company best known for its line of rugged tetrapodal forestry mechs, dipped its toes into the world of military designs with the Fiddler Crab. Combining two ubiquitous large laser cores into a blazer cannon gives it a heavy, long range punch, and the installation of jump jets allows for tactical relocation as it cools down between shots, covered by a volley of smoke SRMs.

Cooling a weapon like this was always going to be a challenge, so its heat sinks are mounted in the legs to take advantage of tactical water features such as swamps, municipal pools, golf course ponds, and more. For true emergencies, it is has been fitted with a coolant pod to quickly flush the heat sinks.

The Fiddler Crab is not just a one-trick armor destroyer. With two tons of SRM ammunition, it offers unparalleled flexibility - such as less lethal options like tear gas for crowd dispersal purposes alongside your favorite lethal options.

All this can be yours for less than 3mil c-bills. What are you waiting for, place an order today! FTME recommends that pilots consume a saline solution before operating, and the factory return policy does not cover incidences of pilot heatstroke caused during normal operations.

Ambusher
40 Tons
Bad Reputation, No Ejection, System Distracting, Narrow/Low Profile, Poor Life Support, Searchlight
BV 561
2,886,660 C-bills

From the design team that brought you the Thruster and would have brought you the Thrustmidget if it didn't keep falling apart, we present you a solution for these desperate times to inflict maximum casualties on the enemy. Able to inflict the equivalent damage of 6 direct Arrow IV strikes to any targets within 30 meters, the Warboy has two simple yet highly effective approaches to warfare. The first is to lay in wait before charging at an enemy head first and explode. The second is to also lay in wait but jump at the enemy, preferably head first and explode. We have stripped back the design to the fundamentals to give it more opportunity to approach its target by presenting a narrower profile, though we have also still retained the searchlight to assist with it blinding opponents as it approaches. As we do not expect the pilots to have a high life expectancy we have stripped down the life support systems and removed the ejection seat as being unneeded weight. Show your enemies the true meaning of Jihad today! Each Warboy also comes with a free bucket of chrome paint and the detonation trigger can also be connected to the head pressure sensor so the machine explodes on a successful headbutt.

Name: Scattershot SCS-001A
Role: Brawler
Tonage: 100 tons
Top Speed: 32 km/h
BV: 1304
Cost: 9,325,000 C-bills
Producer: General Motors
Quirks: Improved Targeting (short), Hard to Pilot, No Arms

The Scattershot is General Motors' newest design intended to create a highly flexible battlemech with immense firepower with limited technological options. Beyond its primitive design the Scattershot only uses a single weapon system easing logistics and allowing for relatively easy replacement in the field. Equipped with four Imperator Code Red LB 10-X autocannons and a combined 10 tons of ammunition the Scattershot can deliver a lethal fusilade of firepower, crippling smaller mechs or wiping out entire infantry companies in a single volley. The ammunition is stored in two massive rotating bins where a mech's arms would normally be placed allowing it to reload by simply spinning the rotary magazines until a new clip of ammuntion can be loaded into the guns, spent clips being ejected from the rotary magazine. The magazines are designed to be hot-swappable, being jettisoned and replaced in under ten minutes for a full reload.

The Scattershot's targeting system is focused on close range, the mech being ideal for urban combat where it can ambush other battlemechs and wipe them out, or keep back infantry which might threaten it or other mechs with a barrage of cluster shots.

So you need an engineering 'mech, and you need it to do a lot. Do I have a deal for you! This is the Salvager SLV-1. Filled to the brim with engineering equipment, this thing can do everything that it would take multiple models of Jabberwocky to do, but cheaper than any individual one of them!

This fine machine even maintains some light weapons systems just in case you crack open something you are salvaging and find some very angry people inside trying to kill you. With enough armor so that even if these individuals have rockets or some other system, you can tank it easily. This with the improved life support means that you can have this work in incredibly dangerous environments without fear of losing your people!

And more importantly, get all that juicy salvage from areas that the Word of Blake has rendered...difficult to work within. So with this purchase, you can get your hands on some very fine technology that has been stranded in such places, easily paying for itself!

Shadow Hawk SHD-1D
Role: Sniper
Weight: 55 Tons
Quirks: Battle Fists, Improved Life Support, Rugged (1 Point), Ubiquitous (Inner Sphere)
BV: 1,010
Cost: 4,663,123 C-bills

We kind of figured that using primitive components we would struggle to make something that could be competitive in firepower but then it dawned on us, what if we didn't even try? Davionman Industries would like to present a Shadow Hawk, but not any Shadow Hawk, one that has been forgotten to time but now reborn for the modern battlefield using new technology! The upgrades are very simple, the medium laser has been upgraded to an ER model and the AC/5 to a LAC5. The weight savings let us near max out the armor, add CASE, and add an additional jump jet all while maintaining the famously cool running nature of the original. What gives this baby its bite is that this Shadow Hawk takes full advantage of armor-piercing ammunition which means every strike that hits has a good chance to knock out something important. That means you will be able to rip apart any opponent from the inside out! If armor-piercing ammo does not take your fancy well the generous two ton ammo bin gives you a lot of options to decide what ammunition you need for particular job, try keeping a ton of flechette around if you feel like going after some infantry or some precision to deal with fast movers for example. Anything decides to be foolish enough to come into melee well those fists are not for show, punch them where it hurts! Its a classic reborn and you can find parts for this baby anywhere, what is there not to love?

Just a heads up the Humpback HMK-4G is also an illegal design. I thought I'd own up as I was looking at the wrong rulebook. I am annoyed about that because if I had known I think I could have done something much funnier with the weight savings of commercial armor.
Salvager SLV-1 by extension also becomes illegal which annoys me cause I quite like what anon was trying to accomplish here even if I am not a fan of his end result.

With that out the way.

Fiddler Crab FCB-78. I just like its approach to warfare. It knows it won't win a stand up fight so its a mobile ambusher and does take heavy advantage of smoke rounds. Its basically the concept of fight smarter not harder.

Humpman 1A as I won't vote for something I made myself but I just like the idea that people are trying to cash in on the desperate need for equipment using the Hunchback name and scamming people in the process.

Few honorable mentions cause there were some that were painful to exclude, this was a tightly fought list.
MKR-1B Musketeer for being "The Rifleman at home"
Zweihander ZHD-1 as someone finally put a sword on a Swordsman even if all it can do is wave it angrily in the air at enemies because its too slow to get close to them. It can be fine as a riot control mech but fucking hell its a walking bomb.
Harry DRT-81 I kind of like where anon was going with this, kek'd at the lore of the mech as well.

Check again. Salvager isn't a Primitive Industrialmech frame. It's Primitive Battlemech, even if its mounting a bunch of industrial equipment.
>>
>>98339536
I stand corrected. I can't read.
>>
As an aside for an idea for the next challenge I think a C3 master-using command mech could be a fun idea. There's so few mechs that use them.
>>
>>>Which is your favorite?
Grunklor GRK 1R is one that looks like it could genuinely win a fight. it's basic, it does what a lot of jihad era primitives did and loads up on rockets. it can move enough, take a little bit of a hit.

>>>Which is the most innovative?
Salvager SLV-1 looks like something that'd turn up in a TRO as one of those odd filler mech designs reverse engineered from some weird Dark Age thing and I kinda like it. is it a good combat mech? no but I like it as a utility thing.

>>>Who is the meth baby this round?
Fiddler Crab FCB-78 good attempt at using a blazer and a quad to try something weird

>>>Which of the 4 oppsy mech is your fav?
Humpman 1A i'm a basic bitch hunchback lover and a swayback with a hppc is a good enough fill-in.

I want to give an honourable mention to the Shadow Hawk SHD-1D as a decent attempt to fix the primitive Shadow Hawk. Still only two 5 point damage weapons sucks but at least it's a vaguely mobile brick.
>>
>>98339606
Do you mean like running two C3 Masters so they can coordinate an entire C3 Company? If so that might be a good challenge especially for Clan Invasion era as there's only two mechs I can think of that actually do that, the Sunder and Tai-Sho. There's a handful that can do it in later eras but for 3050 really should be a mech that does it. Might have to wait for a new thread to do that challenge though as at bump limit now.
>>
>>98339761
I just meant a single C3 but a company or battalion command mech would be a more interesting idea.

We haven't really had room to do anything with the Clans outside of strapping a cERPPC onto something, I'd be up for that. I'd also like a Best Narrative category for voting to encourage people to give their submissions more background.
>>
>>98340025
3051 C3 company/battalion command lance is currently my favourite idea. Another option is to fill out other mech categories that don't have many options eg. ultra light mechs, quadvees, or LAMs.
>>
>>98340060
For clans what about something like making an IIC variant of a Star League era mech that has no IIC variant. Tech period golden century?
>>
>>98340025
Aside from anons have suggested just recently, the only other things I can come up with is design a better 3L Raven contest using 3050 tech and maybe if we hadn't just done a Primitive design challenge, the Age of War Heavy/Assault mech challenge where primitive is unrestricted but standard tech has a minimum engine rating to still make primitive competitive as a choice.
>>
>>98340025
The Salvager anon also gave me an idea, combat engineering mech!
>>
>>98340060
The Clans already have good platforms for a lot of their best weapons, like the H*llstar. Maybe building something around one of the weirder and crappier Clan weapons.
>>
>>98340077
IIC-ing a notorious shitbox chassis could be fun.
>>
>>98340134
I think a Charger IIC would be fun, maybe make limits like you can't change a mech's role so you can't just make a Charger IIC a 5 ton lighter Victor or an Assassin IIC something completely different outside of its weird bug zapper role.
>>
>>98340060

>even the small laser is only small by battlefield standards, there has been a surge in eye surgeries in the past week alone from people looking into the beam flash from constant laser fire
>a 50-ton medium mech being used to stand guard on street corners is also a common complaint, as the roads were only rated for 10-ton hauler trucks
>the police themselves are filing complaints, requesting that these mechs be returned and replaced with either more battle armor or lighter 20-ton security mechs

The interesting thing is that you're actually incredibly limited if you follow space law, where you are either 2t of guns and 35t, or 9t of guns and 50t for corporate security, on an industrial chassis. Especially before they give an exemption for mech tasers.

They don't have to be good at fighting 'Mechs, that's what the army's for. They just have to scare the shit out of rioters, kill determined foot-mobiles, and disable light vehicles, with bonus points if you have a searchlight or multiple missile bins so you can play with levels of force between "look scary" and "Tienanmen". If your host government is willing to let your corporate rivals walk BattleMechs into your front yard, they're not going to mind if you get some real shit of your own as well, but you really should have picked a better planet in the first place.

Let us go ahead and vote on the next challenge as we are past the bump limit and on page 8. Hoping to finish out challenge 3 votes on this thread though.

LAMs, Quadvees, and Protomechs are all things with very few examples of canon sheets, so could be good to run competitons for.

Could also do a Nebula California one where people try to recreate other properties Mechs using Battletech construction rules, with the descriptors being Interstellar Expeditions notes on them/their world of origin.

I'm down for either one of these. Police 'Mechs sound exciting, but I think the design space is just too constrained to be interesting in practice.

After checking what tech is available in the Republic era I think that could be a very interesting setting and a fair few options to be inventive. Design police mechs for when the Republic was a thing but Dark Age had yet to happen.
