I'm thinking about starting an OPR Fantasy Skirmish warband and I'm eyeing Ogres. Are OPR skirmish games reasonably balanced when it comes to strictly elite armies? I have seen many games with elite lists being either totally mogged by hordes or simply dominating the game.
>>98277053The older I get the more I find fantasy to be tiresome. Scifi even more so. The best fantasy is just medieval Europe with minor fantastical elements, like creatures from actual folklore and myth, rare witches and warlocks and stuff related to actual superstitions and fairy tales that people would have had at the time, like trolls under the bridge or Hansel and Gretel

>Snow crunched underfoot as Siaz Polina, strode back and forth in front of her troops. The frost had come early, this year, and the only warmth to be found was steam rising from the nostrils of men and horses. >No matter, it would be hot enough soon.>Polina's troops were arrayed in lines. At the center, her armor clad szlatcha - twenty of foot and ten of horse, a barrage of heraldic colors that assaulted the senses. Each with whatever weapons and armor they found best. Beyond them, the soldiers drawn from the peasantry. Bow, spear, and sword. Banners hung limp in the still, frigid air. A single catapult, laboriously assembled overnight, rested at the rear. Near it, Polina's sister waited, wearing the robes and pointed hat of her profession.>"Warriors of Challaine!" Polina began, turning on her heel to pace back the other way. The murmurs died - she had their attention. Beyond her, each of the soldiers could see the crumbling wall. The Hintergard was the strongest fortress for miles. Even nearly ready to fall down from a lifetime abandoned, it was still the strongest fortress around, and it demanded a garrison. "We have reached the Hintergard. Our winter quarters," Polina gestured to the ruins with a wave of the handaxe she wielded. It looked a forbidding place to spend a winter, but better than the wilderness. (Cont)
>>98277092Well tried but didn't Billhook faggot fucked off since then?
>>98277166>"There's only one small problem. We have some squatters to evict." An excited grumble ran through the assembled troops. "Mercenaries from the south," she announced, naming the enemy they could all see. Not far out of bow shot, just beyond the crumbling walls, another army was dressing its lines as well. "They've come at the behest of their paymasters, here to take our ancient fortress for their own. Will you let them?">"No!" growled the troops.>"Of course not. These scum - orcs and men among them - can't stand against us. Because they fight for nothing but money. What do you fight for?" Polina stopped pacing, turning to face her troops.>"The King!" someone called, and Polina grinned, though her helmet hid her face.>"I said, who do you fight for?">"KING JIRENNE!" cried dozens of voices together. Some banged their weapons on their shields.>"THE KING, AND CHALLAINE!" Polina shouted, the traditional toast a battle cry as she raised her ax to the sky. Polina's troops shouted with her. >"Someday," she thought to herself. "They will shout King Polina with just that tone." But that was tomorrow. For today, she had a battle to fight.

>>98277168The skirmish over control of the ruins of the Hintergard was fought at a corner of the fortress' old walls. Though much of the walls had crumbled, a tower and a keep still stood. A shallow stream, frozen solid, led from a spring under a stone bridge, which the old road ran under.Challaine's forces sent a retinue of spearmen to hold the bridge, sent the bulk of their cavalry up the middle, and the rest of their horse along with their foot szlatcha and their archers to the right, while holding their catapult and wizard back. The D'hara mercenaries decided the bridge would be the main point of effort and placed blocking forces on the right to constrict Challaine's forces, hoping to pen them behind the wall. The combat was very back and forth, but it turned out to be a mix of the catapult and the volleys of arrows a block of twenty archers could put out that dominated the battle. Challaine's mounted szlatcha were woefully ineffective - the painted unit were hemmed in by light cavalry and orcish spearmen and cut down before the foot szlatcha could rescue them, while the unit that wasn't fully painted failed four activation checks in a row after passing the wall. They were never killed, but they also never did much.>>98277178>>98277185Are you mad at me :(

>>98277199The D'hara mercenaries ended up failing a few crucial morale tests and started to break, losing entire retinues, which turned the battle in Challaine's favor. Before long, much of their spearmen had been routed, and in the end their reserve of linebreakers failed a crucial charge against Challaine's cavalry and were in turn charged by Challaine's warriors.Oathmark is a fun game. Are here any wargames with RPGlike elements? Like your characters and units can make thematic actions that aren't covered in the rulebook, but that you the player can think of?
Are there any 30 or 40mm round bases like WGA's "dual purpose" ones? I'm trying to work out bases for these Reaper models with tall, wide puddles and don't really want them to be up on two pedestals.
>>98277469What do you need bases that large for?
>>98277449Wargames are typically too systems driven for that. They are too focused on turn sequences, simpler wargames work better for that. You're better off doing the reverse and playing RPGs like wargames. B/X type games like OSE/Basic Fantasy work pretty well for that. Character gen is fast and you can do group initiative and attacks or you can use the many mass combat rules. Plus the rules are designed for what is basically wargaming anyway with the ability to hire a fuck tonne of hirelings.
>>98277480W I D E skeletons. From left to right, 25, 30, 40, 50.Frankly, 30 isn't even really wide enough for some of these, I'd have to chop the ends off of them. Reaper has scale crept pretty hard.
>>98277449I believe Arcworlde does that.
>>98277449Battletech has a lot of overlap between its main wargame and its TTRPG system
>>98277449>>98277521Any wargame can have RPG style decisions, it just needs a GM like you would have in any RPG.
>>98277449Wanted: Reward does a lot of this. I definitely recommend playing it with a GM or solo.
>>98277563I don't think it's scale creep. Those guys are just units. They came out with a bunch of other undead that are much slimmer and smaller.
>>98278140A lot of their other recent stuff is definitely more on the 32mm end of the scale. I got some random adventurer types and the hostages they're huge compared to the older stuff. Some of these guys heads are as big as my other 28mm models torsos. Their shoulders are close to the top of plastic Frostgrave models heads (although those are somewhat squat in proportion).
>>98278225I think it's because they're sculpted to only stand on their modeled bases on a dnd paper grid and that's it.
>>98277406Does the constitution have rules for when the king is made prisoner or becomes senile? Or would that be a crisis?
I'm looking for minis that are similar to Wrath of Kings' Nasier Bloodmasks, namely fantasy thick-ass bitches. I actually have a box of Bloodmasks but it feels wasteful to use them as conversion fodder. Perhaps someone is selling STLs of female warriors on the verge of obesity?

>>98279211StarCraft and Warhammer starter sets also include terrain and battle mats. Don't get me wrong, OPR is not a bad starter box (I actually backed the campaign, so I have it myself), but is it really that special? It has all the necessary components, but so does the competition.
>>98277166>>98277168Damn, this brings me back to my LARPing years. The tension in the air and the rallying cries before a pitched battle... these were such memorable moments.
>>98279235>>98279253Sure, but the rules are also retarded simple, so you can teach someone really quickly. I'd sooner get this Boxed set for a mate getting into wargaming than an Infinity or 40k starter set (the only things relatively popular here)

>>98279253>It has all the necessary components, but so does the competition. The competition literally costs double. That is the key point here.

>>98279349Then just say it? Price being the only reason to pick a game over any other... Feels like a very weak argument. It's valid of course, and even more so if you dont have a lot of money, but still. Is OPR even fun?

>>982774495 Core Skirmish Essentials. Adjudicating the 1/6 on D6 to different outcomes for actions is the basic outline. There was a sidebook that covered a lot of different actions. The Dolorous Stroke should, its been a while since I looked at it.Might be something in Fist Full of Lead. Not as familiar with it but its highly character focused as well. The old GW Inquisitor game and the resulting inquisimunda does that but its more of a specialist games or even its own thing. A few of the more recent things like The Doomed or Forbidden Psalms have >just make it up lol which sure, why not, most skirmish wargames with rpg warbands work a lot better with adjudication and dialogue between players.
>>98279279>rules are also retarded simple, so you can teach someone really quicklyI really dont get it to be honest. Every single wargame is "Ohhh, look we are so simple, even a retard can play it in 5 minutes!" is this supposed to make the game look appealing?

And while for you, there is a difference of $100 between OPR and Conquest/Starcraft - here that is "only" 35-50€, which gives those games a bit of a better standing in direct comparison. Both are made by Archon in Europe, so it makes sense they are cheaper here i guess.

>>98280393It is. Mantic sadly does make some weird design choices with their miniatures. Some are great, and others i would not want to have for free. We are now reaching the end of the month which is the deadline for my pledge to paint my bushido models by the end of the month.Mostly done, some cleaning to do here n there. Still need to base them but I need sand texture which ill get tomorrow. Couldn't paint last week due to the heatwave... not looking forward to the next one.
>>98282854And part 2, mermaid, octopus lady and jellyfish were most fun to paint.

>>98279445opr is...fine. its got some nice elements, its got simple play that lets battle field tactics shine a little more. definitely more casual and easier to pick up. its greatest flaw is that it was once called one page 40k, and it will never be anything else.

Anybody play frostgrave and have experience with multiple people in the campaign? I've got 3 players, and i dont know if it would be best to have all 3 of us play or find a forth and do 1v1 with rotating opponents. well, as opposing as you get in frostgrave.
>>98283194I played one game of Frostgrave total and it was a 3 person game. Felt cool because if you focused on one person you had to worry about the other one running off with the treasure.

>>98281386I'm going through it right now and to my great dissatisfaction it appears to be quite the convoluted engine. Hopes are high it won't be the case when I'll have a chance to pry into Hametsu but I do have my fears now.
>>98284295You sound like the most insufferable nogames imaginable.
Someone in here was interested in Pikemen rules for Oathmark, so you can use models with polearms but no shields. I'm thinking you'd exchange the Shielding rule for Charge 1, making your spears worse on defense but better on offense. Thoughts?
What rules do you guys like for rank and flank games? My understanding is that Kings of War is probably the most popular.
>>98283752>free infinity-liteOh, cool, I was intrigued by Infinity recently, but the all metal models put me off.
>>98285173If I was to actually implement pikemen I would make them a whole new unit. Basically just a cheap unit like militia where instead of shields they get brace, dont give them armour but give them a better activation than militia. Where their role is to negate charges and stick the enemy in the mud and weight them down with numbers rather than outright kill them in a charge and survive stuff like ranged fire with shields, and if they get flanked they get demolished as they have little defences. Might seem like a direct replacement to militia units though so I dont know.In the meantime I would just us the spearmen profile and say the shield isnt literal and can be just enchanted armour of your realm or something.
>>98283217>>98283497>>98283528what board size did you use? 3x3 is the standard but they recommended going 4x4 for more players and i dont know if thats needed
>>98285365That's not really what I'm thinking with pikemen, I was thinking more regular or mercenary pikemen such as started to appear in the mid-late medieval era
>>982853874x4 for 5 players
>>98283752What would you say are the rough edges?
>>98285266Oathmark for me but thats because of the kingdom building more than the battle rules.
>>98284215Could be that usually people using shorts are fat fucks or spergsOutside of being a child and/or having to deal with over 35C. So that leaves us with guys with their own orbit or people that are autistics (since some autistic really hate the feeling of pants and/or do not feel cold on their legs like the regular population)
>>98285580Personally I think the battle rules are good, nice midpoint between complex and simple and I like how hard it is to wipe out a unit in a single turn. In my opinion the biggest spot for improvement is the lack of customization. I'd like to be able to slap the Flight rule on my cavalry to make Pegasus riders, for example.
>>98285605>people using shorts>using shorts >using Wearing shorts anon. People wear shorts. Typically because they're comfy and easy to wear.
>>98285662>they're comfy and easy to wear.
>>98285662>Typically because they're comfy and easy to wear.
>>98285395Ah, yea that would work fine then, just make them something like linebreakers but without the armour and cost.
>>98285687I'm thinking they'll still have Brace, but will trade Shielding out for something else. My first instinct is granting them Charge 1, so they're good on both offence and defense, which makes sense to me with the extra length of a 2 handed pike over a 1 handed spear.

>>98285738Outside of Brother Vinni Barberian stuff I can't recall other minis.
>>98285738GW's Darkoath Savagers literally have a Conan mini (long hair and broadsword) but the women in the box look pretty goofy.

>>98285753I managed to not find any stl options.I’ll still look on myminifactory then. For male barbarians I’m looking for Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime build and for women I’m not looking for hyper muscle girl kind of proportions either, but the muscle definition still has to look like she can be a capable melee fighter. With enough skin exposed for skin tone practice.>>98285759>>98285765>>98285768Thanks! I can check those out if my mmf search yields no results. >Ted talk ramble belowAlso having seen the privateer press painting tutorials I’m going to try a lot of excess mixing. I was already using the rattlecan lid handle thing. But Tamiya 10ml glass jars work too for human infantry the spraycan lid would work for “larger” miniatures.I bought two empty tamiya jars to fill with ammo cobra motor acrylic metallics, but I might get a third to fit a sponge inside to do the slightly damp drybrushing thing Duncan Rhodes showed in his drybrush tutorial video.

>>98284306You are not wrong the rules look a bit clunky but its because they are badly explained (the author made youtube videos about how to play and he seems a bit tismal)But honestly its not too bad once you get it and I'm ok with complex rules in skirmish since low model counts allow for more intamacy of actions.I think the gist of game play action is>1. gather your dice pool, this is your rank, your stat and any equipment levels as die ex: rank 1 archer with a lvl1 riffle might roll 2d4+d6>2. Roll and add up the highest 2 rolls to see if you beat the target number ex: the archer rolled 2, 4, 6, their score would be 10 (4+6). and any 1s rolled adds stress>3. Check to see the number of pushes (rolls of 4+ and 8+ are worth 2, 12+ worth 3). so in our example they got 2 pushes. The guns DR is 2 is also added when attacking, so they got 4 pushes total, ie 4 damage

So 40k has been shit for a long time and it is clearly not getting any better. Is there a decent model agnostic wargame I can use my 40k models in these days? I know OPR exists which I'm sure I'll try out at some point. Or maybe a fan-made edition of 40k that's good?
>>98286517>bait image>repeated question asked daily in anything 40k related>does not know about the multiple fan made stuffBait or honest retard?
>>98286533Honest retard I guess. Ive generally avoided warhammer stuff for years. The L-shaped terrain is one of the things I've always despised about modern 40k, though I know the left image inst exactly realistic either and is from a museum or something.
>>98286517Xenos Rampart.

>>98286548>The L-shaped terrain is one of the things I've always despised about modern 40kL-shaped ruins go as far in the past as 4th edition.
>>98286548I havent played 40k literally in like 20 years, why is everything L terrain, Ive seen this frequently. Cant you just not do that?
>>98286598They standardized their terrain shapes for tournaments and then ported tournament rules to regular play. Afaik, it's L-shaped ruins with a second story platform for snipers, chest high partial cover walls, and templated "rough terrain" circles.
>>98286598Modern 40k has become obsessed with competitive play and "balance", so therefore every single board must be carefully placed in one of the six GW approved terrain setups. The power creep has gotten so ridiculous that any unit than has a single member sticking a toe into line of sight is instantly blasted off the table (This is a real rule. If you can see a single member of a squad you can wipe the whole squad). So the only defense are huge walls that completely block line of sight so nobody can shoot each other. Any game that lacks these huge walls is going to be won by whoever is going first. It's a complete shitshow.

>>98286598For some fucking reason, GW took the layout for tournaments (already a dumb thing for a wargame) and insert it into regular play. (picture)Area terrain has never been an issue, the problem comes from True Line of Sight, fixed terrain layouts, fixed objective markers something 4th didn't have >>98286589Arear terrain during those time basically told players to not be retarded and use it for when it made sense. Like Forest or the rubble area within the base of a ruined building. It was not L shape central as today since it was not the in the rulebook what shape those area terrain should have. Also 4th didn't allow squad wipes if you could see the tip of a rifle from a single model.

>>98285477there are some unclear bits and interactions, if I remember correctly the rules don't specify if or how many abilities and equipment your models can take and some combinations are rather strongI think among the example units stat profiles there are one or two that does not match with the stats creating formula but I'm not sure it was long agoone thing I remember is that the Energy trait for guns is just ??? it says that the weapon gets the same bonus as if it was AP when the model is the active model, but when it's doing just a reaction shot out of turn then there is no bonus as if AP. (AP is good against high DEF but bad against low DEF targets)but otherwise it's nice, I liked itit's just we liked Space Weirdos enough to not bother switching to something that feels a bit clunkier>>98285314to be fair I don't know how's Infinity it's just how people often referred to Xeno Tactics, I assume because the reaction heavy gameplay

Its fast to set up and easy enough to proxy in most units with minimal fuss. Not my go to for 40k substitutes but not my least favourite. The activation mechanic enrages a few but doesn't bother me much. Not a great sales pitch but its easy enough to get going its worth trying once or twice to see if it clicks.

>>98287757>each unit can do 2 actions on their turn>only 4 possible actions, easy to decide; move, shoot, charge and ready>move the leader, every other member of a unit stays within 6" of them, not measured individually. nice to get some extra range from that>there's no separate hit and wound roll, you either wound or not. units have a target number to wound them, allowing a save if exceeded, and a kill number that doesn't allow a save. >shoot everything within a fire zone, like a template, you only effect models in that 3" zone, meaning you can't spill over to the whole unit getting killed. >rolling a 1 causes one model to run out of ammo and can't shoot until next turn. this gets tense and makes a bad roll make things worse temporarily>enemies flinch back 2" if they successfully save. it really feels like you're holding off a swarm. since you're shooting the closest model, and that keeps changing as you resolve attacks, you can push the same model back multiple times if it lives. Real fun to undo a whole turn of movement, even if they did save. close combat is just the same, but point-blank. favorite thing is that a unit reacts to an action completed within 10" of them. they can react with ANY of those 4 actions, and they do it each time an action is done, so if my bugs are charging and visible, they can potentially be shot once by a squad before getting in combat, and again after by the ones that live, assuming they aren't out of ammo. between that and the flinching, you really feel like you have impact. add stuff like bugs tunneling and using existing bug holes to come out of hiding, MI can get air strikes, there's a lot of push and pull>>98287785Honestly? I don't think it would be that hard. I have yet to try something like MI vs MI, but I could see it working well still. the parts that are made for the setting really work with it.
