In my setting, it's relatively recent that men exist at all. Before that event, males and females looked very much alike. Men are sort of an orcish invasion, a corruption created for economic gain and narcissistic self aggrandizement- a witch queen wanted to be the most beautiful of all and started sapping the beauty of others, creating a slave caste from the (now) uglier sex. Of course, her power wasn't omnipotent and most nations just discarded the ugly babies or threw them into the woods once the curse was revealed. Men eventually revolted and caused all sorts of mayhem and abuse, culminating in imperialism and war crimes. However, great cataclysms brought by ancient magic barred men to the lower levels of the world trees, and their empire had to start devouring itself, and ended up killing one of the world trees (the worst blasphemy known to all). Now the world is recovering from the worst kind of patriarchy and a militant temple seeks to feminize and/or purge all men with magic but even the fallen kingdoms of the dead world tree pack a punch. They're not leaving without a battle. The empire of man fell into many kingdoms that battle with each other. Rape is very common, as is violent lashing out over everything. Homophobia is near universal among them but that won't prevent homosexual rape to humiliate and harm the other. They also hate shemales and women with a passion, castrating the beautiful ones and using women as wombs to gain more soldiers.

The cultures are many, as are their approaches to sex. The norm is for males to be shemales naturally, but fulfill male roles in relationships. So they compete- in trials of grace, combat, seduction, dominance and display. Some are matriarchies, others are patriarchal but with shemales as the dominant force- polygamy where submissive/defeated shemales remain as concubines.

When the sexes don't look too distinct, homosexuality functions as birth control, though most won't view it that way- it's both how nature balanced it as well as how some institutions have cultivated it to be. For example, a matriatchy that rules through sexual control (prudishness) is secretly a lesbian supremacist group. They are outwardly prudes, segregating the sexes and pushing the shemales and males to venture outwards, to conquest and explore the world. They seek to disempower the phallic energies but are doomed to repeat a loss (as a civilization, not on individual level).
Homosexuality itself can be a source of social shame especially in competitive environments - where taking the submissive role is not acceptable, especially for warriors, adventurers or nobility. However, there are no real penalties besides losing one's rights to a harem (the most dominant should have that position).
Most of the world is still womanly in form, it's a much softer and sexier world than ours.

I haven't really considered this before, but from the way I've built my setting, the answer to this question kind of emerges naturally.

Due to how reproduction and sex within the setting have been more or less separated from one another due to the widespread infertility issues (among other genetic issues stemming from rampant genetic engineering etc) of the masses, attitudes towards sex are generally rather lax among the general public. Thus as sex regardless of it being hetero or homosexual, is very unlikely/impossible to result in children without medical aid involved, many of the taboos related to sex and relationships are different from ours.

The primary religion in the setting is a matriarchal fertility cult who trough their ritualized medical knowhow, provide the masses with reproductive assistance, and their dogma is generally more focused just on ensuring that children who are conceived are as healthy and as free of genetic defects as possible. This is achieved via genetic screening, enbryo selection and some level of genetic engineering as well. Thus what is deemed immoral is not sex itself but conceiving of children outside of the guidance of this order, as it risks the children inheriting genetic issues in a far more dangerous package than otherwise. Homosexuality doesn't really concern this religion because it doesn't in any way risk conception.

Thus in general, I'd have to imagine that homosexuality wouldn't really be seen as anything really special or taboo, though neither would it be celebrated or given any real special considerations either. Most people who want to have children would still need the aid of the fertility cult to have kids, be they gay or straight.

It does though typically in more subtle and covert ways. The Sisterhood is keenly aware of the power they wield via their near monopoly on reproduction and cultural dominance they have and while they may have originated as a more genuinely well meaning organization, in the contemporary era they have a rather dark side to them concealed behind their warm and embracing exterior.
Basically, the Sisterhood kind of treats the population of the City or at least those under the control of the Concordat akin to an overbearing and manipulative mother. Most commoner denizens of the Concordat are in some way at least indoctrinated to the faith of the Sisterhood, and thus are very loyal to them. Due to how they kind of "overproduce" children as a result of the reproductive aid they provide, and rear these "excess" children in their orphanages/children's creches, for a lot of people in the City, the Sisterhood is what forms their initial image of family and maternal care. They are not abusive but they are suffocating in their indoctrination and care.

The sisterhood also has outright military forces and agents that exists to defend their installations and enforce their agendas. Some of them like the Venara devotees basically exist as spy/assassin/concubine type of agents whose role is to keep check on the Noble families of the City and other powerful groups as well as gather genetic samples from them for the Sisterhood's gene-archives. Basically the Sisterhood seeks to steer the denizens of the City towards it's onw designs and vision both via their near monopoly on reproduction, indoctrination, subtle influence via their agents and at times overt force via their fanatical warriors.

The sisterhood itself is not really the core cause for the decline and divergence of the human population in the City nor the rise of the infertility & other genetic issues among the masses. The cause for this situation is the collapse of the City's golden age into a multi generational, millenia long series of succession wars that ravaged the City and it's population. The seeds for these problems were already laid during the golden age due to the genetic engineering and tampering that was subtly driving human speciation however the succession wars saw these trends accelerate massively as the different factions of that conflict used genetic engineering to both enhance themselves as well and their subjects, as well as to attack their rivals via bioweapons. Some of the most damaging bioweapons unleashed were things that actively sought to damage the genomes of their victims, designed to basically sabotage the genetic enhancements of those who were subjected to such weapons.

There is a dual element of both desire to maintain their monopoly on reproduction, as well as genuine worry about further tampering of human genome, that has kind of led the Sisterhood to a situation where they aren't really keen on trying to fix the outright core issues that cause the infertility problems. Rather they kind of treat the more overt symptoms and prune the most dysgenic lineages but at the same time prevent outright evolutionary process from fully pruning humanity's bloodlines to a state where only the viable remain. The Sisterhood instead wishes to kind of slowly reconstruct their own idealized "perfect" human genome that is shaped by them and under their dominion.

There are populations of people in the City that live outside of the Sisterhood's control, where a sort of selective pressure driven evolution has occurred, that has led to generally more viable human populations that aren't reliant on the sisterhood for reproduction. These populations are relatively small and primarily exist in the "warrens" and ruins of the City, that exist outside of the control of the Concordat. These societies are regressed technologically and socially but are in some ways healthier than the civilized humans living under the dominion of the Concordat. Of course these "feral" populations aren't strictly baseline humans anymore due to the genetic bottlenecks and biological divergence the evolutionary process via which they emerged. Their ancestors underwent a merciles selective pressure in which only the bloodlines that could viably produce children at least with some success lived on, while the rest perished. Thus their populations are generally far smaller than that of the civilized commoners living in the Concordat, whose ancestors were "saved" by the nascent Sisterhood that spread across those regions.

The Sisterhood treats the feral and tribal people living outside of the Concordat with a combination of scorn, hostility. The most divergent lines of these peoples the Sisterhood outright rejects as no longer being sufficiently human, whereas the ones more close to baseline humanity are viewed with a mixture of caution and desire to convert them to the faith of the sisterhood, in order to gain control over them. The Sisterhood does not want to prune these lineages outright, but they recognize the threat to their monopoly on reproduction such viable bloodlines posess. Such peoples serve as more "healthy" sources of genetic materials that can be used to help with the steering of human bloodlines the Sisterhood is conducting.

Another element to the question of human biological divergence in the setting is the existence of outright genetically engineered and artificial offshoot species of humantiy that were created both during the Golden Age of the City, and during the succession wars era. The bulk of these creatures that were created during the Golden Age were basically servants, pets and customized slaves created to serve the whims and designs of the ruling aristocracy of the City, whereas during the succession wars, large amounts of such creatures were made just to exist as war thralls. The most prominent, still surviving lineage of such beings are the Ogres that were designed to serve as heavy infantry for the slave armies of the warring inheritor families of the Succession wars.

In the contemporary era of the setting, these hybrid "chimeras" are generally viewed with a great deal of hostility and prejudice, especially by the Sisterhood and it's followers. Only some "sanctioned" breeds of these beings are tolerated and they typically exist as second class citizens at best, and as basically labor animals at worst. The Ogres persist largely because of their kinship with House Chot, and their utility as warriors. The Ogres were created from the genestock of the Chotians themselves (who were gene-engineered laborers who were conscripted to serve as warriors in the armies of the inheritor families) and thus the Chotians kind of viewed the Ogres as their "cousins" that had been warped into these monstrous beings, and would not stand for their culling even after the Concordat was established and the succession wars had ended.

The technology and knowhow to make new breeds of chimeras is still around, but largely illegal within the Concordat, at least if it involves human genetics. The Sisterhood views the mixing of human and non human genetics as a grave sin and one of the prime causes for the genetic degeneration and splintering of human bloodlines.

Real life mythology, history and biology offer a plethora of curious scenes.
Castrated boys raised as catamites across all iron age and many medieval empires. Tokyo was femboy central when it was built. Many Gods appeared in multiple forms - sometimes changing gender, other times dressing up as women. There are cultures that share a wife amongst all of a brother group- it's hetero but you can switch things up in your world.

Zoophilia is a taboo but in various forms emerges throughout human fantasy (dragon kidnaps woman, werewolf, Zeus the white bull rapes women and Goddesses, Jabba the Hutt, Tentacles, xenomorph) - and of course, since women are paired with animals, monsters and beasts this reflects a reality. Men are more animalistic than women. Your world can play with this fact in its own way.

If nothing else, it would make the job of stabilizing the genes easier, as you wouldn't need to deal with nearly as many offshoots once you make several distinct genetic groups.

I imagine that such doctrinal disputes about what to do regarding the divergent human bloodlines do exist however the dominant doctrine of the Sisterhood insist on the task of trying to restore what they perceive to have been lost rather than further contribute towards the splintering of human bloodlines. Heretical/unorthodox sects of the Sisterhood are almost certainly percecuted and hunted by the dominant sect of the faith.

On some level though there is an element of stabilized genetypes in the setting, many either emerged naturally before the time the Sisterhood gained prominence, or are a result of the Sisterhood's breeding programs. The ultimate goal of the Sisterhood is however to preserve humanity and restore it to what they perceive as having been it's original "perfect" form that was broken. Thus from a religious point of view, they find the idea of human speciation abhorrent, or that is at least the stance of the dominant sect of the Sisterhood.

Funny you should mention that. There are actually such "half elephant" chimeras as well in the setting. I call them Jumans, and they were originally engineered to serve as sort of gardener beasts for the various private gardens and biopreserves of the aristocrats of the City. They are naturally quadrapedal but can if needed stand on their hind legs sort of like bears or giant ground sloths etc. The weird shell structure on the back of the Juman character in this picture is not part of his anatomy to be clear, it is more like a sort of carriage/backbag thing.
Another chimera in the picture is Jonya, who is essentially a genetically engineered catgirl.

The art in this picture is a bit old and I need to revisit some of the designs I have for these characters but overall their lore etc is more or less the same. My vague plans for these characters is to use them in some story/comic at some point when I am done with the worldbuilding autism and actually want to make use of the setting itself.

Thanks. Been meaning to update some of the designs in it but the overall infographic project has taken more of my focus. I think that the original space jockey was at least a partial inspiration for the juman design in that particular picture however the origin point of the juman concept and Godal as a character, along with Jonya, Jozo and Javak all stem from Freak Quest which I ran on /tg/ back in the day, and was the first "incarnation" of the setting.

My ideas regarding the setting have changed quite heavily back from those days but many of the core concepts and the four characters have stuck around at least in some form, though their background and designs have changed quite a bit. In the freak quest days everything in the setting was more monstrous in general and my drawing skills were also far worse so I just tended to prefer to draw monsters rather than even try to draw human like characters.

By the 17th and 18th centuries, shipping data became public and centralized, most famously at Lloyd’s Coffee House in London. I’m not sure I buy what you are spouting. The bit about sodomy was only partially correct. One of the reasons anal sex between males was looked down upon in Roman society was that recieving the act was considered unmasculine (feminine technically but I’m calling it unmasculine to drive a point). May as well ask for some input too. Problem design #1 is very much based off the skull crawlers from the king kong movie, with an extra set of hands on their elbows. But, thinking about it a little more carrying stuff and actually using those hands seems like it would be difficult, and I can't seem to think of a good solution that doesn't involve giving them an extra pair of arms. I think about something like rome expanding its territory. They get up some colonies to do mining or farming. They get involved in some minor wars in the same places over and over until they just go "fuck it" and annex the place. They annex some provinces peacefully, who want to be part of their realm. Eventually they get embroiled in a conflict with another major power, which spins so out of control that the resulting peace has to involve major concessions from the losing party.

Then you get people like Caesar, conquering Gaul to enrich himself. He would do stuff like, give one tribe tacit permission to cross roman territory, then when they did so he would attack them for aggressing on rome. He would go around bullying people until they got sick enough of him to form a coalition, then use the coalition as proof of their hostile intent and go to war. Then after they surrendered, he would go through his list of villages involved in the coalition until he found any who hadn't sent him official missives of explicit surrender then go attack them under the excuse that they were still at war.
Of course, he did all of this for the plunder and slaves he could take in the process, with which he enriched himself, which he had to do since he racked up massive debts back in rome during his political career there.

Ultimately, you just need a reason for the empire to want to expand. They don't expand because... just... expand! They always have reasons.
Well, I guess there were some who had reasons like "divine mandate" to conquer certain parts of the world, like the americans who thought that they were destined to rule all of north america so they just conquered all of it. Or all the wannabe successor states to rome, who thought that they had a claim on all previous roman territories and waged wars of conquest for what were essentially aesthetic reasons.

The eminent Germanicist Winfred P. Lehmann collected his thoughts on the topic a few years before his death in the rather confusingly named monograph "Pre-Indo-European" (2004). Also he's rightly dismissive of the Nostratic hypothesis which he feels obliged to mention. The size and breadth of the lexicon didn't look very big, sadly.

I'm more interested in Paleo-European and IE substrates than PIE, so sorry that I can't be of much more help, but better any response than silence I suppose. I enjoyed Lehmann's Etymological Gothic Dictionary, one of the prettiest Germanic languages IMO.

Personally I don't think the Mexica are much worse then other notable militaristic empires in history. Due to their sacrifices you could certainly argue they were, but it was a normalized practice within their cradle of civilization, and on the flip side the Mexica were also more hands off then a lot of Eurasian empires, and depending on the estimates you go with, the amount of sacrifices the Mexica did, while large in number and frequent, were still not incomparable to or were even dwarfed by holy wars, religious purges, massacres and genocides etc you saw done by plenty of Eurasian empires that are not usually considered to be evil (EX the Cathar purge in 13th century France may have killed as many or more people than the Mexica sacrificed over a century)

Assuming the magic/tech is fairly easy, over time, lesbians would take over the population, since heterosexual couplings would have a lower rate of maximum reproduction, lesbians would only give birth to daughters, and there's a heritable component to lesbianism. The only possible issue is the relative military capacity of such a state, but if there is such magic/tech, women can probably just use magic/tech for military affairs rather than rely on upper body strength.

Given that advanced biotech is kind of what my setting is built around, and how sex and reproduction are almost entirely divorced from one another, as most people are in practice infertile and reproduction requires medical intervention, a kind of natural consequence of this premise is that there is no real hard barrier against same sex couple having kids within the setting.
Given the technology in the setting, I could even see it possible that same sex couples could have kids that are genuinely biologically their own, as to my understanding even in real life, it is theoretically already possible to produce viable gametes from stem cells of a person, thus in my far future biotech setting, I cannot reasonably justify why it would be impossible for the fertility cult on whose services everyone is more or less responsible for reproduction, to provide a same sex couple the option to have kids that are biologically actually theirs.


I am not really sure of the long term implications of this desu. I am not gay or have I any real interest in exploring homosexuality or whatever via my setting, it is just a natural consequence of the way I have set up my world that I can't really justify why same sex couples would be prevented access to the same reproductive services heterosexual couples are also dependnet on for having kids.
Imo, prejudices and social atittudes in fictional settings ought to reflect the worldbuilding and flow logically from it in the setting rather than be just contemporary attitudes supplanted into the setting or be the biases of the author tackily attached to the world.
Thus, I kind of have to imagine that homosexuality and same sex couples with kids of their own would be more or less normalized alongside heterosexual couples given that I can't really find an in universe justification for why they wouldn't be, regardless of my own personal views on these matters irl.

This process sounds very anti-family to begin with- perhaps families as such are banned or state-mandated, or have been in the past.
Regardless, people would be in survival-mode and have the downsides of that (tribalism, violence, rudeness, prejudice, discrimination, opportunism, slavery etc. etc.) - but would also have conformity, surrender to 'greater powers' as a central theme to their life. Thus, if a powerful force would decree a prejudice to be in effect, for most it would be so. Doubly so if the institution is vital.

Of course, any such institutions would have their own survival and power-biases; they may seek to keep humanity in such a dire situation- and their edicts may force people into a near-permanent lose-lose situation. AI-curated match-making or reproductive hormones being state sanctioned and only ritualistically given to otherwise sterile beings...

You've had some nice biopunk art depicting a plethora of shapes and forms. However, hormonally- what are they like? Full of synthetic roids or close to nil hormonal 'weakness'? Injecting male hormones could appear to be the solution to male fertility crisis but is the opposite; the body closes its natural production lines when supply appears from the outside. Thus, steroids reduce the size of testes in men.
What I'm getting at is this- how distinct are the sexes? Harsh survival pressure increases distinctiveness in a natural environment for slow reproducers (such as simians), but a toxic wasteland with mutagens, body alterations, nanomachines and whatnot can go any which way.

The sexes would themselves have a tug of war for reproduction; what is the role of women when surrogate wombs fill their role? Oh, they would seek to be mothers spiritually. That might mean; no fathers.

Essentially families etc are still a thing but almost everyone requires some level of medical intervention/aid from the fertility cult to have kids, and the cult's own dogma basically has instilled the cultural norm that it is outright sinful not to go trough them if you want to have kids.
This fertility cult/religion is pretty much central to the society of the setting or at least the civilized parts of it, as it is what basically keeps the civilization going.

Generally frowned upon, as being a homosexual means not having children, and as such is harmful to the families of both involved.

You can have a gay lover, but you almost need to have a wife/husband first if you do, so people look at you and go "oh he's/she's doing their moral duty though," and not "what a selfish prick".

Some countries have different degrees of severity about it in their cultures. About as many allow same-sex marriages, as there are ones that'll just assume that being gay means you're harming your bloodline.

Most places, you won't get lynched for it though.


I do most of my fantasy settings like this, because it's one of the few pragmatic ways people could be against homosexuality without pages of religious autism, and it's semi-realistic to a lot of older historical societies and their views.
Most fantasy societies don't guarantee long peaceful lives. DnD is full of monsters. As such, not perpetuating one's lineage through having children might actually be a credible harm or risk, as opposed to thee days where you probably have a brother, sister or cousin that's not a fag.


Also I fucking hate rainbows as a symbol. Too many colours, typically in block pastel, and not even arranged well. 90% of lgbt 'flags' are gharish eye shrapnel, and if they were half as visually traumatic as they are, chuds wouldn't have become a thing.

The rainbow makes thematic sense, since it's the visual opposite of black and white, representing multiple sexual orientations verses strictly binary heterosexual men and women only. Though vexillographically it's not great. There's a reason most flags only use 3 or less colors.
I dislike the later full LQBT++ flag, though. The one that adds a triangle with a bunch of extra colors and shapes in one corner. Because apparently at some point some autists missed the original intent of the rainbow symbology and assigned every colored band to a specific sexual orientation, and when they ran out of space started adding more in the corner. It misses the point of the original symbology and turns what was thematically appropriate but vexilographically questionable design into full-on vexillographic gorn.
