>party is imprisoned and all their equipment confiscated>druid player says he stuffed his spell focus (ring) in his ass>whatever bro roll sleight of hand DC 15, they're dumb hobgoblins and not paying too much attention>succeeds>later in the evening he casts primal savagery to acid chew through the bars wh40k spess muhrine style>tell him the spell explicitly calls for a melee attack against a creature, which the cell bars are not>he throws a shitfitWhy some players are like this? He literally has the spell cards in front him. Why some retards insist on 'creative' interpretation of explicit wording?
>>98286949>party is imprisoned and all their equipment confiscatedAlready pretty retarded. Get a better group.
>>98286957They dropped against sleep spell spam by hobgoblin slavers. I wouldn't say that was excessively retarded.
>>98286949Honestly both of you are kinda cringe.>errm i shove my ring up my assInfront of everyone? Sure bro>haha this spell that gives you monstrous features to attack with doesnt work because it says creature.Really nigga? This feels like a very combative table, no respect for the GM and no grace for the players
>>98286949>Haha the spell says it targets a creature so it doesn't work!nah fuck off. Spells aren't missiles that need a warm target to lock on to. If I can throw a firebolt at a goblin why can't I logically throw it at some tinder aside from 'it's what it says it isn't a valid target'
OP is shitposting but avoiding this kind of situation is exactly why most spells are limited to only creature targets while weapon attacks can target creature or object or location,
>>98287004You can't do that for the sole reason that this isn't calvinball. It's fucking magic it doesn't follow irl physics. The rules are in the spell description. If you want to lit a fire via spell there's plenty options that explicitly do so, create bonfire being the obvious example.
>>98286990>combative tableHow's your wife's son, by the way?
this implies that the only way to practice spells is to use them on live targets
>>98287082Why else would wizards adventure instead of just studying?
>>98287004>>98287066Firebolt explicitly lets you target objects in both 2014 and 2024. Not all cantrips work like this, and a number of them have updated text in 2024 that lets them target objects when previously the text did not say so. The inconsistency makes me think that the RAW is indeed intentional and some cantrips aren't meant to work on objects, while others are.I do wonder why the druid didn't shapeshift though, unless he was 1st level.
>>98287166I could have sworn Firebolt didn't. Still, I've heard some stories from other DMs. Like one letting a PC use Acid splash on a lock to weaken it so it could be more easily ripped off. Looking at its 2024 version it now splashes in a 5 foot radius so that might be a bit harder to justify doing now.I don't know I've never liked the idea of Spells having those kinds of hard limitations like it's a computer program. Even programs can be modded and hacked to do what you want. A wizard could just cast it at a point and without the targeting parameters if he wanted to target an object. Metamagic exists but that's a Sorcerer only thing if we're talking 5e. I think it's really just a thing to try and prevent endless utility from creative players using logic.
>>98287192This is something that has been prevalent in D&D since 3rd edition. The rules spend more time telling you what you can't do than what you can. It's a system that's inherently designed to be limiting. Some autistic players really like it, and are still playing 3.x to this day, because it provides a granularity that is extremely appealing, and it completely avoids "mother-may-i" situations because the answer is always no. But for non-autists, creativity is punished instead of rewarded. 5e is improved, slightly, in this regard, but it's still a system that cages players more than frees them.
>>98286949>>98286949I target the fly that conveniently is on top of the bars.
>>98287232Have another player stand in front of bars, target player with spell and have player dodge so you miss and bite the bars. Willingly fail the attack role to hit to make sure it misses.DM wants to be a rulefag then just out rulefag him.
>>98287071Why ask me how you're doing?
>>98287066The interesting thing about ttrpg is the tactical infinity. It sounds like boardgames might be more your speed, bud.
>>98286949Worst bait I’ve seen all week. See you at the bump limit
>>98287232>>98287274I think the better explanation is that the acid produced simply isn't effective on objects rather than literally being unable to slash at them.
>>98287004Spells target creatures or objects explicitly. Extreme example, you can’t cast Toll The Dead on a door, because it doesn’t have a mind that can contemplate its mortality, and it has no life essence to be drained away by way of necrotic damage.Doors do have an armor class and hit points total, weapon attacks are always an option, but the spell needs to specify, verbatim, an “object” as a possible target. All that aside, OP is a fag and still should have rolled with it instead of just punishing his players for trying to improv their way out of his stupid magical piss realm goblin rape dungeon.
>>98287082Yeah? Magic is evil.
>>98287071>>98287281OHHHH SHITHe just called you his wife's son! That implies that your mom is a ho, and your dad is a deadbeat, and you step-dad is a loser that posts on 4chan!
>>98287651Reacting to them just makes them happier.
>>98286949>OP makes a thread and its bait>posters ask why he can't just make a better thread>says he stuffed his original content in his ass>whatever bro roll wisdom check dc 10 these days /tg/ prefers circle jerking in general threads and deleting screen cap threads that would remind people of times the boards wasn't shit>fails>later in the evening he casts deflective hyperbole to chew through replies asking him why he wouldn't improvise instead of follow the letter of the rules to no one's benefit>tell him he's a bad dm>he starts implying other anons are sexual deviantsWhy are some posters like this? He could literally make a thread about anything. Why some ESLs insist on "creative" writing prompts where they describe things that explicitly didn't happen?
>>98286949>spell focus (ring)That's not how Druids work.
'keywords' like it's a programming language were a mistake. we already have the English language for that.
>>98287274The fact that you think there's even a 1% chance you can win this argument indicates that you are severely autistic.
>>98287232>>98287274Doesn't do aoe. The fly is dead, what now?
>>98287232>>98287274There is no fly. It's a single-target spell that wouldn't cut through metal even if you could target an object, which you can't. Stop being a faggot and try anything else, something that will actually work and won't waste the time of everyone else at the table.
