I made my first from-scratch sculpt. Eyeballed everything based on images so it's nowhere near scan quality. Maybe someone will enjoy him until some good scans come along of these guys. Planning to do the rest of the early Bloodletters as well.

Here's the STL if anyone wants to print:

reporting back from previous thread.
Managed to make several models over the week, had some previous models I've made and done some world building.

This is what I have so far:
-Red dragon (young adult) boss encounter mini fully statted, with map, with loot table and some lore strapped to it. Plan is to make fully fleshed out boss encounters for DMs so that they can drop them into their games without needing to spend the time coming up with extra stuff if theyre short on time. Tried to make this one as beginner friendly as possible.
-Water/ocean-based dragon mini (Adult), still needs stats and lore.
-basic world map and some backstory
-sent some models to some friends overseas to figure out shipping and praying they dont arrive looking like a fucking pancake

Currently in progress:
-an all gigachad party of all 13 classes
-an all humanoid-animal party (furrybait basically because they always seem to have money)

Next steps:
-working out a consignment deal with physical locations in my country, maybe a website or something for international orders
-setting up for selling stls online

Anyone know how many models I should have ready to go before setting up on myminifactory or similar sites? I dislike the idea of people not getting their money's worth so want to make sure that what I'm offering is at least enough to justify purchase.
Also do you prefer your minis (particularly PC minis) with or without the base attached?
>>
>>98312050
You've got plenty to launch onto MMF. good on you for caring about people's money. Are you setting up a tribe or just a store front?
if its just a store front, you're good to go. Even with bundles.
Don't forget, algorithms love steady posting. even the basic "new minis" feed. Putting a couple up a day will mean that people will continually see you in the new feed, and more likely to click through.
>>
>>98312050
and and without base for sure, separate file in the zip. bases and minis print at different angles optimally. plus if im building a warband, i probably want a different base
>>
>>98312077
>Are you setting up a tribe or just a store front?
no clue. I've yet to look into it, that's this weeks work once I'm done modelling out druid, bard, ranger, pala and pre-supporting everything. Is there any reason to bother with the Tribe thing or is that a waste of time?

>Putting a couple up a day will mean that people will continually see you in the new feed
good to know, havent through about that, thanks.

>>98312085
at least that's an easy fix, also think my bases kinda suck so that makes life easier in the future.
>>
>>98312125
is there any bother? yes, its dependable income.
You sell your monthly minis at discount, customers get fomo if they aren't signed up. you get 10(or whatever) dollars, they get your stls you made that month. generally, if you can make permanent customers, they'll be buying more than they would have and you, as an artist, get a relatively steady income.

I saw these on twitter. If you have a good understanding of how supports work and preferably some experience actually printing, people are generally more willing to pay for quality pre-supports as it saves quite a lot of time and hassle. I think it's like 50/50 on models I see for sale on whether the bases are a separate part or the same part. Unless it's a very dynamic pose that requires a specific base to support it, I personally prefer the bases separate.

I can't be bothered measuring so I just started topping up roughly 50/50. I heat the vat with a heated brewers band for about 30 minutes before printing, I also heat the entire room to 23 - 25 celcius with a mini fan heater (easy because it's a very small room/storage space).
>>
>>98313766
Oh also, while I'm heating the room with the fan heater, I place the build plate in front of the heater, I've found having a hot/warm build plate has helped with getting good strong adhesion especially with large prints.

I've realized after using that resin2fdm add-on literally all it does is thicken the resin supports. This means any random slicer which does resin supports could efforlessly incorperate them into FDM as a support option by just tweaking some numbers in their software but they don't so people need to do this janky work around.

I've got a desk, IPA, resin, enclosure, etc, but even after watching videos I'm still not 100% sure on everything I need to do in order to get nice prints.
Calibration, zeroing, etc. Feels like I'm missing something everytime I watch a new video.
>>
>>98316673
Use Lychee and load the profile for your printer and specific resin.
Remember to keep the room a consistent ish temp between 20 - 30 degrees C. Heat the resin in the vat with a brewers band. Since I controlled the temps and started heating the plate I've had zero misprints.

At PLA temperatures, not really. The idea is to provide a stable temperature environment, not for it to get particularly hot (as an example, I've got my Centauri Carbon set for 60 on the bed for the first few layers, then I drop down to 40 for the rest of the print. Enclosure temp doesn't get any hotter than that).

I'm confused, how does a saturn 4 ultra 12k have sharper prints than a mars 5 ultra
>>
>>98312050
>>98312125
I agree with the other anons who replied and add:

>Is there any reason to bother with the Tribe thing
Definitely, people are conditioned from all sides to have subscriptions so yeah, they love the FOMO and discounts
look at how other creators do it, idk, for example Vae Victis, Warp Miniatures or maybe even Forbidden Prints although that guy is making terrain
They usually have a basic tier of subscription that gives
>a welcome pack of things like a mini, or a group
>the monthly release you do
>a discount for your whole store catalgoue
Then there is usually a cheaper version of this tier with a limited number of subs. And a more expensive tier for merchant license, that lets people sell the printed version of your models. Sometimes there are extra tiers with extra stuff for wip and polls for next month models, but look around on myminifactory and you'll see what people do.
>>
>>98321045
The resolution in the y-axis is the same for almost any machine, because you do not want to double your time for almost no return in quality.

So the difference is the pixel size and the light source. You want small pixels and parallel light so those pixels do not get smudged by too much light pollution.

And as many have said, pixel size is not resolution, it is dimension per pixel, so:

Saturn 4 ultra 12K: 220mm/11520 is 0.019mm per pixel

Mars 5 Ultra: 77.76mm/4320 is 0.018

So Mars has slightly smaller pixels, so the difference is probably due to the light source that can deliver more parallel light with less light pollution or because of the heating.

Looks like the resolution has gotten so good that now the lightsource and lens setup becomes more important.

To answer my own question:
>couple of back and forth emails with elegoo
>ai generated response tells me to essentially take the entire fucking machine apart and put it back together
>still doesn't work
>send another video of it not working
>ai generated response says replacement parts are being sent
>link to video demonstrating motor replacement included
>motor assembly seems to include z screw and new bearing
So if things go well, I should be looking at having a functional machine again in 2-3 weeks. You can bet your ass that I'm going to be taking a real close look at the new bearing before it gets installed.
>>
What are some examples of stls being too detailed to the point where they fit the meme of stl models having too much detail?
I want to know as I plan to sculpt some models. I think reptilian overlords is a pretty good example of a fair amount of detailing for 28mm scale models. I just want examples of what NOT to do.
>>
>>98310350
Oh, there are definitely ways to get paid scans straight from the source for very affordable prices, the only issue is that they're usually invite-only gram groups with less than 100 members. The good news is that, if you manage to get in a group, you'll eventually get invited to many more. It's a tight knit community.
>>
>>98310350
I'd pay for scans for a select few minis, but outside of that I'd honestly rather just buy the actual plastic.

>>
>>98324061

>>
>>98324364
i forgot the step of joining them together first before curing
>>
>>98324401
You can use resin and a hand held UV torch even after curing. Or just get some superglue.
>>
>>98324434
krazyglue = superglue
>>
>>98324061
I use loctite gel control super glue, I've had better results than other brands or the thinner loctite super glue. It very rarely fails, but I just have to clean off the joint and glue it again.
>>
>>98324061
>sometimes it doesn't hold
Then you did something wrong. Either the parts aren't even close to fitting together correctly or you didn't hold them together long enough. >>98324364 is correct though, and you can actually do both. Typically I assemble with superglue, give it 24 hours or so to fully cure, and then reinforce and fill gaps with resin. Otherwise I find myself needing three hands to apply the resin, keep the parts together, and get the UV where it's needed.
>and fuck a uv torch, use a uv laser

>>98324617
Ah, a fellow thick glue enthusiast. Try IC-2000. Thank me later.
>>
primer keeps rubbing off mini while i paint
at least 24h to cure after i prime. why resin
>>
>>98324741
Well, presumably some resins won't let your primer adhere as well as others would. Also might be not so good primer, or at leats not so good for that resin. Or you may have gotten the resin a bit dirty handling it before priming. Or perhaps the paint you're putting on top of the primer contains solvent that eats into the primer. Or you're just buggering about too much with it all for any reasonable primer to not get rubbed off.
>>
>>98324617
Is lepage basically loctite but rebranded for leafland?
I’m not sure if there is a difference between the brands or if they’re better than gorilla’s gel glue in tubes.
Sometimes I get a mist effect on my resins. How do you lads prevent this and maybe even remove the mist effect?

>>
>>98324923
If you're getting mist, it means there was either moisture on your models or your humidity's real high. Make sure everything's good and dry first (and stop heavy breathing all over the place). Kicker helps too (flash cures the joint before it gets a chance to outgas).
>>
What does mist on a print look like?
>>
>>98324741
My man, why are you handling a mini while you're painting it? Stick the bottom of the base to something (I'm partial to empty paint jars and plastic shot glasses) with poster putty, or use one of those base holders if you'd rather spend more money on an inferior solution. Keep your dickskinners off the mini until it's been clear coated.

Resin is cheap but the printer is 3k. Which is nothing for the average GW paypig.

Whats the current Bambulabs Firmware and overall quality situation?
Been running a Creality K1C + CFS for 1.5 years now but its a bit on the loud and wonky side. Considering selling it and buying a BL P2S since I've heard BL is better in print quality and ease of use. Plus it will free up space on my table for a second printer, maybe a Snapmaker U1 or whatever multi filament is recommended?
Would be really grateful for any advice, but I dont want to get vendor locked by firmware that will verify every model I print with FBI (I dont live in the US)
>>
>>98330750

>>
>>98330572
Sure, there is a market for nicely painted miniatures. So maybe a printed full colour army might sell, same as pre-painted terrain is becoming a thing. But for some people that is just irrelevant, because painting is fun to them.
>>
>>98330750
>Would be really grateful for any advice, but I dont want to get vendor locked by firmware that will verify every model I print with FBI (I dont live in the US)
Well, they don't currently have to connect to the internet to work, and as long as they're not connected to the internet Bambu can't push a firmware update to change that. So... how likely is it that your neighbour will forget to lock down his Wifi?
>>
>>98330997
>There might be
Brother, 95% of GW's customers are just stacking grey piles of plastic. The overwhelming majority of the hobby is the market.

does it just use standard resin? am i mixing the colors myself? how much transition between colors?
its a real neat machine again, i'd use it for weekly campaign terrain but yeah not for my minis
>>

>how likely is it that your neighbour will forget to lock down his Wifi?
On a scale from 1 to 7 I'd rate it close to impossibru.
How is that relevant?

I doubt digitally painting the model to separate out colors is that much faster than just hand painting a base coat especially for terrain
>>
>>98333280
Considering all the people who feel like they've saved a bunch of money when buying shit they don't have any real need or interest in at 20% off the price that went up 25% yesterday it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people will happily feel like they've saved the time painting without counting the time spent digitally painting in at all.
Of course, if coloured resin printers take off a lot of stl makers will probably "pre-paint" theirs (or at least pay a pittance to some digital sweatshop in Hanoi to do it for them) in order to stand out from the rest

Can’t ask for more than that. Vae Victis are good people. Their modular stuff is almost 100% interchangeable too, so the more of their sets you buy, the more options you unlock.
Try to buy their ‘monthly’ releases as those come with bonus miniatures for about the same cost.
Example:
>>
>>98333853
>>98333921
I agree, they are one of the rare creators who do most things right: not too many details and lots of modularity, and also a very distinctive sculpting style. They are worth the support.
But if you think it's too expensive, then just wait for the next sale on MMF, and buy the stuff for half the price.

price and stls is always an interesting discussion for me. the value of a digital resource especially compared physical plastic. 35 bones for 20 models or so is something i can buy in plastic. how many do i have to print to make it worth it? does price matter?
As a skirmish wargamer, trying to build a warband is hard when im making each mini with character. rank and file definitely makes these packs more worth while.

>>
>>98334972
>the issue is paying 20 dollars for 4 minis is worse than plastic prices.

But thats literally a /you/-issue, because you can always print more than 4 miniatures. Even if its 2 years from now, you still could go back to the same files, and print more.

Also, its something that does not exist in plastic in that exact same shape. So even if plastic is half the price, what good does that do you, if you cant get those miniatures in plastic?

>>
>>98330539
It's expensive, it likely requires proprietary resin and inks (Heygears lol), you're stuck with their bullshit slicer (Heygears lmao), and the resolution seems to be about comparable to a Mars 2, which honestly is fine for tabletop use but some autists are not going to be satisfied with that. Also, it appears to be aimed more at professionals than hobbyists, but Heygears seems to be focused on professionals first. The marketing hints that they're targeting Etsy people but if you want it for your army men, they'll gladly sell you one.

Hi, newfag here thinking about getting into 3D printing to print miniatures. Can't use Resin safely due to lving condition so have to go with FDM.
I heard people praising Bambu Lab A1 mini for that. Wanted to ask how is it, is it one of the best picks for FDM or is it overrated? Any anons here have experience with using it and could you perhaps post example minis if it's not a problem.
>>
>>98341378
bambu has been in a lot of hot water lately for being greedy shits but they actually do make a really good printer.
>replace the 0.4mm nozzle it comes with with a 0.2mm nozzle
>do not update the firmware as it will break compatibility with third party slicers
>switch to LAN mode before connecting it to your network to keep it from updating automatically
>buy good filament, print good filament
>seriously, soggy cheap filament will get you soggy cheap results
>and buy some 0.2mm acupuncture needles before you get a clog, not after
heavy hardware store primers and a rotary tool with a brush attachment do wonders for cleaning up too

I didn't really do the best print job on pic related, but it's kind of serviceable. It was using an A1 Mini and Sunlu PLA+ 2.0 filament

As for safety, I've done air quality testing too. If you are concerned, get a air purifier unit. Not one of the tiny ones, a proper one that is the size of a box fan. From my testing, printing PLA emits about as much VOC as frying an egg, but for a much longer duration of time, but everyone's space is different and you won't know exactly how much VOC you are breathing in unless you also buy a monitor or start having a scratchy feeling in your throat.

also some naked prints from a while back

resin style supports actually work pretty great in FDM as long as they thick enough for the printer to print them
>>
>>98341378
Go with the A1, not the mini, and spring for the AMS Lite, trust me. You’ll also want one or two spare 0.2mm hardened steel nozzles.

The A1 is a really, really nice FDM printer, leaving aside recent controversy over Bambulab’s decisions. Especially for a beginner, it’s easy to get great results out of with minimal learning curve.

I am lazy so I print them as they come in the files. Keep in mind that the print head can't instantly travel between parts, so filling the print bed fills a different purpose than it would on an SLA print.

>"supportless" miniatures are sculpted in a specific way to be self supporting, and print in about 30 minutes on my A1 mini

The build plate isn't level fren, one corner is slightly high. Clean your build plate really well with alcohol. Let it dry. Remove tray. Clean screen with small alcohol pads. Lay down a sheet of paper over the screen to protect it. and loosen the screws for the build plate so it can pivot, lower the plate arm by .01mm at a time until the plate makes very slight contact with the paper and pull on the corners. One side will be looser. That's proof its not level. To fix, lower plate by .01mm more making the paper just tight enough to be difficult to move and press down on the plate and tighten the screws. Now it's level. Sometimes you have to go one more, but one is usually enough. Now set the homing position of the printer to the current position so the only gap when you start printing is the thickness of a piece of paper. That's the same thickness as the fep film. Now raise the build plate until you can reinsert the tray. While tray is out keep on table on nose tissues to protectbottom and use soft spatula to check the center and edges of tray inside for debris. Use gloved hands for whole process of course including cleaning. But now you can remove any debris that could be blocking good contact between fep film and build plate during printing, the way to do this is reinsert the tray, lock it down, put cover on printer, allow resin to settle over 15 minutes, use tank cleaning mode on 15 seconds and that will harden a layer you can scrape off as a sheet with the spatula capturing old debris. Usually debris isn't the problem but it's good to check if you had a recent failure that had supports. Now last thing... if your build plate is smooth use rough sandpaper to fuck it up. Then clean it with alcohol again. Most plates now are laser etched but some are still smooth or sandblasted. A rougher texture causes less problems. But if plate is level it should work either way with that model since there isn't a large cross section. Your plate just isn't level
>>
>>98347731
Be especially careful to wear goggles to protect eyes when Cleaning or removing old debris or scraping the tank with the soft spatula because resin can flick into your eyes permanently blinding you

Lots of stores do there own sales on their aniversary. the front page is greytide for theirs, Vae Victis did 70% off in may.

for their entire catalogue, its not crazy. mmf is 2 packs for the month, but a lot of these guys have been going for a while. its not crazy to see 1000+ minis in these catalogues. still gay but i understand

1000 minis and maybe 10 will be good. Especially if they're pulling this shit. Just release minis monthly and give a subscriber discount for the old stuff...

fair, i dont know that artist or any artist who gives you their entire catalogue.
Vae Victus i thought was generous, those 2 frenchies give you all the modular arms for every set when you get the monthly. which is pretty great

it's BigMrTong and his stuff is pretty great if you like classic stuff
also it's not a permanent blacklist, but
>a ban cooldown list, as this is not in the spirit of my providing access to the full back cataloge and not fair to my longer term suppoirter

Does this mean this only works on patreon and mmf can’t stop one from doing this?
>>

Damn that's incredible

There should be some kind of a summer sale too. If they skip it this year, there is a site wide sale for black Friday guaranteed, and for Christmas too. But there should be something in summer too.

MMF can't and won't stop you from subscribing only one month, and they don't care. If an artist wants me to stay subscribed they need to release something I like every month, but if I look at the august preview later this month and I'm not interested, I'll skip August, and maybe resubscribe in September if they release something good then. It's only logical and I've doing this for years. Nobody cares.

How decent are the avatar of war pre-supports?
I'll buy them if they work

Are creality printers really that terrible?
It seems that anyone I ask about FDM can only recommend bambu while simultaneously telling me to boycott them and only tells horror stories about creality, anycubic and elegoo, but especially about creality

I heard the Ender 3 is bad. My friend has K1C and it has been working fine.

Thanks!
K1C is extremely loud according to the interwebs though?
I was more talking about the K2 series, as I'm considering waiting for K3/whatever bambu sharts out or getting a U1.
My main aim is to print terrain blocks and props for huge DND campaigns with friends. Bit I will likely order minis out of resin online since I heard FDM isnt that good for that

I'm not sure who's telling you horror stories about Elegoo; I picked up a Centauri Carbon last year, it Just Werks. Carbon 2's supposed to be fine. Early firmware was supposedly pinging any IP it could see, it got fixed (I never saw anything like that on my network).

it was mostly about Neptune 4/plus/max being unbearably loud and bad with auto leveling
