I cannot think of a single positive portrayal of a Knights Templar-esque organization in tabletop games.

They're only considered "good" because they're the only ones who want humanity to continue existing. Other than that, they would be considered humanity's greatest enemy instead.
>>

>they're only considered good because they're pro-human

I guess? But I don't think that's the own that you seem to think it is.

Warcraft has both kinds of Crusaders, the Knights of the Silver Hand are your typical knights templar expy, while the Argent Dawn are quite literally hospitallers based out of a chapel in a plagued land they are trying to heal.

Good thing they're not real and I can accept them as being portrayed positively in a fictional grim dark future.
Are you going to be a werido who can't separate irl from fictional portrayal and needs to push some sort of political thing?

Not surprising, the Templars were usurious bankers after all, how many people have a positive opinion of bankers?

In My setting, servants of Iomedae often work as city guards and are generally altruistic and kind, and defend their cities from threats like orcs, goblins, and the occasional attacking vikings. The temples are often multi-purpose, having spaces that serve as "charity houses" (performing the functions of a soup kitchen and giving spare clothes, baths, and haircuts to the needy), guard barracks, and even temporary jails until prisoners can be escorted to their trials and/or proper prisons.

I was going to agree with OP, but the silver hand is a pretty good expy. Too bad the scarlet crusade got retarded in the lore. Could've been a neat grey faction but lmao demondracula

Grail knights are Arthurian, though.
>>
>>98311277
Because the Templars disbanded while the Hospitaliers still exist to contest any portrayals of themselves and technically form the Vatican's standing army.
More curious to me is that the Hospitaliers have managed to garner a better reputation than the Red Cross in spite of being less adventurous.
>>
>>98311608
The red cross can act worldwide, the Hospitallers are limited to Christians in the middle east
>>
>>98311608
You mean the modern red cross? The one that pays their doctors peanuts but their lawyers a fortune to send C&Ds to video game devs?

The various religious knightly orders in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying are at least depicted as good by "default." I don't think any of them show up significantly in the not-very-good published adventures 2e had, which is where my experience with the system lay.

Vikings didn't kill jews and moslems. They did sell them White slaves though.
>>
>>98309519
Because they were crypto-jew usurers that were trying to undermine monarchies, which were divinely ordained by God. No surprise that the snake William Marshall was a secret member of their blasphemous order.

Redditors memed the crusades as some stupid bible thumper "war for no reason" because they were too stupid to understand what centuries of Islamic conquest had done. Weirdly, they love that pop factoid about Dracula being based on Vlad the impaler. Who did he impale and why? Doesn't matter.

In Shadowrun there were several books about conspiracy theories.
One of the theories in the first or second book was on the Catholic Church reviving the Knights Templar to deal not only with the new jihad coming out of the middle east, but also various supernatural threats. At first it was believed they were going to want to crusade all nonbelievers but the write up makes it clear they're actually trying to protect the world from the forces of what they think is Satan, actually it's another evil force but still.
They can, but rarely do, summon angels, and most of them are Magician Adepts, which at the time of their printing, were a type of Adept so rare you needed your GM's permission to roll one, because they were both superhuman and capable of casting spells, making it clear the Templars were closer to D&D style paladins.
IIRC a late third edition book listed them as a faction player characters can be associated with.

For all of its flaws of trying to adapt a modernish setting to D20 mechanics, I always liked the way Masque of the Red Death depicted Christian priests as functioning fundamentally differently from your typical fantasy cleric: instead of explicitly casting spells and miracles most of the time, their piety gives them progressively more "best of" dice rolls and rerolls to approximate plot armor or whatever sense of divine casualty allows your unremarkable normie to do extraordinary things.
>>
>>98309519
Thats because all of the things that would make an organization recognizable as being based on the Knights Templar also makes them clear the bad guys. They were a bunch of thugs that claimed to be working for holy purpose but also frequently didnt give a single fuck about who they were raiding and pillaging so long as they got to raid and pillage SOMEBODY, because stealing people's shit was the goal and the religious narrative for it was a thin excuse. They're just vikings with a christian aesthetic and better armor.
Its like asking "Man, why does everybody always focus on the BAD parts of the spanish inquisition?"

Its because Monty Python made a meme out of it. The inquisition would be warranted today and was just as necessary back then.

Heirs to Heresy: The Fall of the Knights Templar lets you play members of the 30 or so knights templar who escaped the initial round up.
You're basically knights errant if you play it straight, but can opt for the secret shitbag route as well depending on the tone you want to go for.
