You're missing the 3.0 overhaul cutting a bunch of fiddly bullshit while making it more of an alt-casting, the 3.5 revision cutting more fiddly bullshit and better distinguishing the alt-casting, the 4e version being literally the only divergence from the AEDU formula, and are glossing over the in-between dΨ wonkiness before it was settled as Long Rest dice-pool.

The Wizard's mechanics have real practical issues with representing the themes people expect of psychic powers, even as of 5e. You'd more want an Enchantment/Divination oriented Sorcerer build/subclass as the mechanical chassis.

And dedicated mechanics are ALWAYS the best option if you can get them, it's just horrible for game design and character-building to be filling out legions of niches that way.

That's the opposite of the problem that people had with the mystic. The issue was that it was too good at being built for any niche, while still being able to dabble in some generalist areas. Which, yes, is exactly the same thing that can be said about the wizard, but wizard is core and a sacred cow.
