I promised to run every edition of D&D if my country moved to the next stage of the world cup. Where should I start? Chainmail? Or was it too distant from D&D in practice? Holmes or is it noticeably different?

Also, recommend me modules or scenarios that would work for one shots. They don't need to be contemporany, it can be an OSR thing that matches.

Start from the bottom of the barrel: pathfinder 2e.
>>
>>98319450
>it can be an OSR thing that matches
What qualifies for this?
>>
>>98319450
Start with Holmes. It is designed to get you started, and the included dungeon, the Tower of Zenopus, is a well-regarded classic.
>>
>>98319487
Some OSR modules were intentionally made for 0e or B/X, while others use the term OSR to include a variety of games.
I'm going for system, so I could end up making my own original 2026 dungeon, but maybe there's a really cool one shot that is meant to be played with Chainmail or whatever.

I think I might struggle with 3e one shots too, I recall only seeing campaigns, I'm open for any rec as long as it feels tied to one edition. But I'll get to those in months.

>>98319512
Cool, I was kinda thinking about that.
I was checking out Greyharp, tho.
>>
>>98319593
There's good 3e modules that aren't whole campaigns, but combat takes so long that fitting things into a one shot will be difficult. 4e will have the same problem.
>>
>>98319800
I made 4e and .5s stretch goals.
>>
>>98319450
What would you consider "Every edition"?
Original D&D
AD&D
3.0
3.5
PF
DnD 4
DnD 5
DnD 5.5
DnD the pay by week edition
If I were to make such promise, I'd try to run the very same adventure many times, so they get to see how the same situations are dealt. Other would be to start from Tomb of Horrors/Tomb of the Serpent Kings/a random donjon small dungeon and go trough it, aiming for 2 sessions each, with an arbitrary lvl up + full in the interim (so they have to create a character and level it up).
If you're going to read and study each system, get them to study them as players.
HOWEVER, ask them whether they want to play so. Maybe they're OK with sticking to a certain version and you may get the same kick for less buck.
>>
>>98319956
You forgot AD&D 2e, BX (several) and BECMI (two versions at least)
>>
>>98319956
I'd consider the D&D editions like anon said >>98320009
And not a different game like Pathfinder. I'm not gonna include Lancer just because it's functionally 4e.
>>
>>98320029
Makes sense. Anyway, another alternative is setting up a series of "Five room Dungeons" that are part of a bigger Dungeon Scheme and every time they end solving it, they get some kind of atavic artifact that enables them to change the rules of the reality (i.e. move in the following edition) and perform actions that previously were not possible in such way (applying the rules of the new system), aiming for easy simple differences that can be applied.
As a player, I'd enthusiastically dive into a campaign like that.
>>
>>98320194
I think that would requiere a solid grasp of each system, and I'm prepping and running one after the next. If this turns out to be fun I might try to do something that starts with Basic, then adds Expert land management, then Commander troop management, and eventually something else.
>>
>>98319450
Hard mode, run it in chronological order of publishing, with a continuous campaign world. Change editions every module.
>>
>>98319450
Easy mode: run them in reverse order, with a bit of luck everyone will flake somewhere around 3rd, liberating you of the obligation to dig up any of the really old stuff.
>>
This pic always made me feel kinda funny
I can just imagine her entire head being pulverized into a red mush or blood brain and some skull, and her body twitching orgasmically in that slutty armor, her ass shaking a bit.
>>
>>98320649
She wins this one though, that's the (in)famous Eowyn vs Witch-King fight from LotR.
I might be able to hook you up with a story similar to what you're describing, if you don't mind genderbent Link.

>She wins this one though, that's the (in)famous Eowyn vs Witch-King fight from LotR.
I know, that's what makes it weirder for me.
It's an iconic scene and it's usually depicted so elegantly and dignified, >>98315958 is a great depiction of it.
But that's just does not fit Frazetta's usual motifs, his stuff tickles a certain ryona instinct. An elegant woman being in such a whorish little armor, feels like something completely different.
>if you don't mind genderbent Link.
The ShindoL doujin?

>>98320722
>The ShindoL doujin?
Yeah.

Numbered Editions mean nothing, instead play D&D each time the gameplay loop or characterization had a significant (and often detrimental) change.

OD&D + Chainmail
OD&D + Grayhawk and Blackmoore
Holmes Basic
BX D&D
AD&D1E
AD&D1E running a post Dragonlance officially printed setting
BECMI D&D starting at level 10
AD&D2E (Core only)
AD&D2E + Complete Class, Tome of Magic, and Spell Compendium
AD&D2E + Skills and Powers
D&D3E
D&D3.5E (Core only)
D&D3.5E + Anyhing up to around 2006
D&D3.5E, no Core. Instead use Tome of Battle, Tome of Magic, and Expanded Psionics Handbook
D&D4E (Pre-Essentials)
D&D4E (Essentials-only)
D&D4E (Mixed)
D&D5E
D&D5.5E

Out of respect for the offer, I'll go jerk off to it again

If you're looking for ryona, I'd also recommend Onna Yuusha no Tabi, now fully translated up to chapter 8 (though with some low effort typesetting).
>>
>>98320850
I think I might know this one too. I'm actually kinda ashamed that I'm more into defeated fantasy heroines than I initially realized
>>
>>98320761
FFFFFUCK
This is the real hard mode.
It sounds like an incredible quest to embark, but I feel that a lot of those, mainly from 2e forward, hang more on the players than the GM. It sounds like something college or library groups should embark.

Been running OD&D with Chainmail for about a year now and it is easily my favourite system I've ever ran. The game gives you practical shit you can actually run a fantasy world simulation in. You can go from man to man combat to mass battles smoothly and it all just works. It hits the sweet spot of crunch and smooth for me so well. It isnt this rules light whatever nongame the osr seems to think it is. Man I love odnd. My dream is to run it in the 50 man club game someday but I think it's never gonna happen.
>>
>>98320946

It is known. Simple and rules lite aren't the same things. I too have this joy within me and I too dream of someday sharing it with a whole clubhouse. Let us keep that hope alive!
>>
>>98320946
I don't think the OSR has such a strong opinion on 0e, most people openly recognize they like B/X or AD&D in particular.
If you use the OSRchive, how do I look for the ideal Chainmail pdf? There's a ton of terminology I'm not sure about. I ended up grabbing "greyharp" thinking it's the three original books in a single file but then I looked it over and I'm pretty sure it's a different thing.
>>
>>98321033

I'd recommend starting with "The Old Lords of Wonder and Ruin," which you can find under "!!! 0e, Original Edition, Chainmail General" in the form of the 2.1 edition or at DriveThruRPG for free in the 2.4 edition (which has the latest rules but is watermarked and can't be copypasted. I suggest grabbing both.)

It's still recognizably standalone Chainmail as the book shows it, just more modern layout and clearer examples. There were a couple places where the author had to reconcile some things, but they're well-documented.

Thanks
I though I understood this stuff enough but once I started actually looking for something to play I started mixing up authors, colors, acronyms, re-editions.

I think I'm a pussy and I will start with Basic, and leave CM as a coda at the end so I have time to run a couple simulations before getting players.

Depends on how you define an edition. There are many distinct editions depending on how you define it. You could just go with numbered editions but you could also go with a list like this.
>>
>>98321281
I like the joke, but I don't get the picture. Why does it start counting in only .5s for a while? I get Basic counting as a half edition, but there's a much bigger difference between it and AD&D. Am I missing something? I'm very tempted to take and it and change the numbers but maybe there is another level I'm missing.
