I kind of miss 90s cyberspace, like in Shadowrun. Sure, in practice it was a really boring mini-game while everyone else twiddled their fucking thumbs, but it had charm.

It's a fun idea but I don't think there has been a single good implementation of it.

I miss seeing pretty faces and nice bodies in book art.
I know you can make what you want and imagine what you want, but I'm sick of technicolor hair, refrigerator bodies, and sexual ambiguity in TTRPG art.

anon, you can be that artist. it's not too late to create.

the only way to make it good would be for the entire party to be involved in cyberspace by default, having it be relegated to just the one hackermans means you can't flesh it out to be actually cool and fun because then only 1/4th of the party gets to enjoy that, and if you simplify and abstract it so that hackermans can do their job quick and not hold up the rest of the team too much, then why even have cyberspace at all?

Traditional games?

This. If anything, you should probably take more from fucking SAO than Snowcrash proper.
(or... take from Snowcrash for real: the virtual world scenes are mostly noir-like scenes, in which you talk to people)

Helpful and fruitful contribution.

Congrats, you just made your game a VRPG - your Netrunner is eaten by a grue
>>
>>98328213
What the hell is a grue?
>>
>>98328249
it's a creature that eats you if you don't have a light to chase it off. the name is from the dying earth by jack vance but it's most known for zork.

Oh no! But I thought cyberspace is full of light!

I could see it working if you did something like Ars Magicka and had people switch around characters depending on the circumstance. So the hackerman has companions/allies/subroutines played by the players when their main PC wouldn't be involved with affairs.

You could also try to put the PCs in a situation where things are happening in both cyberspace and meatspace around the hackerman, requiring the other PCs intervention to keep the hackerman safe during his hack.

You could even combine approaches, having slower hacks allow the hackerman to get his companion programs so the players with less tech-minded PCs can contribute to something thats only happening in cyberspace; while 'hacking-under-fire' situations can just have the meatspace PCs dealing with physical problems while the hacker deals with digital issues.

You could even in theory justify this by having the other PC's hardware provide the additional processing that is used in the hack.

90s style Virtual avatars and usernames were cool
>>
>>98328598
I think that was also a suggestion in the original CP2020, that the hacker would have autonomous programs that the other players could control while their characters actually stood around measuring how much drool the hacker was leaking.
But that also had a real-time hacking system that didn't rely on going into full dive cyberspace and covered most practical uses in the field. You only really went full blown matrix if you were trying to hack into a distant server over the dial-up internet.

Didn't third edition Shadowrun make it so it works in real time so if the GM could handle two different descriptions he could handle having the Decker actively hacking the security as the physical members of the team are running through it?
>>
>>98328782
It works in "real time" in second edition, too. It's still a pain in the ass system that barely fucking fucks and slows the game down to a crawl.

I think Anarchy 2.0 does it right: it takes place in real time, and it's just a natural extension of the other mechanics.
>>
>>98328795
*Barely fucking works, lol.

The path of the lazy fuck is one dependent on the world. The path of the creator is one who shapes the world in their image.
>>
An innocent time before we realized it would allow third world garbage like indians and brazilians to insult our brains with their output
>>
>>98328598
I personally think the best way to implement it would be a fuller version of the IG protocols from Cyberpunk 2020 where the hacker is moving through a digital representation of the building at the same time as the other players are infiltrating and needs to fight ICE to unlock doors at the same time the other players are in a firefight. Same encounter, separate enemy pool.

I already make my games how I want, and I work harder on designing my games to be consistent than entire teams of chucklefucks combined. I draw my characters and maintain their images in my mind as they perform their actions.

I'm just sick of seeing racially-ambiguous danger-haired refrigerators on every cover and in every book.
So make more false accusations just because you got mad at what I said, you fucking dipshit.

I think you're imagining anger where there is none. I'm glad you're actively creative because it sounds like you have good taste.
>>
>>98330032
Or you could have it be a generally-coterminous but easily-pocket-spaced plane so it functions somewhat like having one party member doing Ethereal shit until you get to a "hardened" target they've got to dive alone while the rest of the party handles other things.

I think Mega Man Star Force works like that, though the franchise being in a very Tokusatsu time in its life sends it in zany directions.
