My theory is that actual in-person groups that do dungeon crawls etc are way rarer than anyone is willing to admit given the decline of attention spans and stable 9-5 middle class jobs. I've never touched 5e. The closest I got was Pathfinder 1e and Pathfinder 2e, and the latter is something I'm currently running. I earned my spurs running L5R, and moved onto WHFRP 4e, Shadowrun 5e and Star Wars FFG. I even put some time into Shadow of the Weird Wizard, which was great. I still do dungeon crawls in 5e and it's actually not bad, if you have random encounters so people can't just rest-spam. Dungeon inhabitants will form a search party to try to track and hunt down the PCs. They need to use pass without trace if they want to leave the dungeon and rest nearby. If you implement some OSR-style mechanics it works okay. There is a decent game in 5e in some ways, it just is stupid that it requies you to do SIX TO EIGHT FUCKING FIGHTS PER DAY when most D&D parties barely get through 2 combats per session, also the individual combats should be more challenging.

I see it as the designers getting an ultimatum that there can be no evil races. I've seen this in old modules that get an extension or remake for the 2024 rules. Orcs are no longer bands of savage raiders, they're inserted as barkeeps and bakers making pastries, Drow no longer enslave other races in the underdark, instead they make neat little trading compacts. Concepts like slavery, pillaging and the raping of the land and its people are completely absent because someone has to do those things, and if it's attributed to a specific race (or species as they've come to calling them) that might cause "problematic" association. They've removed half-breeds and completely delegitimized one's bloodline as having any practical or historical relevance.

The result a weird, over sanitized setting where nothing has impact because it lacks any sense of gravity or verisimilitude.

For example for whatever reason certain races are not allowed to look a certain way uniformly: elves, dwarves, halflings -- all of them have to have internal human race variation in them, but the drow or tieflings are spared from this treatment.
