I was reading the rulebook after playing Feya's Swamp for the first time and realized the person that taught me completely ignored or forgot about placing fish on unpicked Leader cards, and somehow thought building costs were something completely different to what the rulebook says (I was taught you paid Leader value times the amount of Spirit Tiles; but the real cost is just leader value + (3 x spirit tiles). I feel like these things happen to me whenever I'm not the one teaching lol, doesn't matter how complex the game is, I wonder if it's because they just watch some video with missing or invented rules or what.

Hooooooly that was one productive day a-rangin'.
We traipsed through mountains and ravines of the southern edge of the valley to make our way into the swamp biome for the first time. We completed all three of our outstanding missions, two that play into advancing the story and one for world building.
Our next dilemma is that our missions try to divide our attention. One wants us to speak to a bunch of biologists on the Eastern edge of the valley, while the other wants us to rush back down to Tumbledon at the valleys bottom to introduce a captured plant humanoid thingy to a Spirit Speaker . Both are on timers, but with a repeat of todays efforts and blitzing the trails, we could probably have our cake and eat it to. Its crazy how some days you are stuck within a few locations desperate to get out, or sticking around to help put someone/find a specific path card/get that one mission progressing, and others you are flying across the map with no time to dilly or dally.

We are on the cusp of completing a third of the campaign now, and my buddy and I are still engrossed. May take a while but we both feel committed to completing the game, and then either replay the game with the mini module boxed sets(and brand new roles/backgrounds) or I will go get Legacy of the Ancestors.
And then, as usual, tear down is an absolute breeze. Cannot wait to go hiking in card form again.

One deck with no components or are some components allowed?
If negligible amount of components are good:
Radlands, The Fox in the Forest, Gosu (1st edition, not 2nd or Gosu X), and Reign of Witches are my suggestions.

If none: Innovation, Mottainai, Compile, Antinomy, Liberation, Forest Shuffle, Marvel Remix, and Sea Salt and Paper would be some of my suggestions.

Port Royal is one of my goto push you luck fillers
Sea Salt&Paper (with extra salt + extra pepper on a sidenote, why is it not "extra paper"?) is suprisingly solid and gives a good luck/skill balance when you play a few games in a row
Mottainai/GtR/Innovation, of course
Coloretto if there are more players present

Hate drafting is a shit mechanic in 95% of cases and would be implemented as well if not better with an "AI" that randomly drafts cards or randomly takes cards away from you.
>let me make this suboptimal move just to fuck this one player
Only potentially justifiable in 2P games, and I've yet to see that justification.
>>
>>98347898
>Only potentially justifiable in 2P games, and I've yet to see that justification.
Actually, come to think of it, I do know one 2P game that kind of fits as an example. The investment tiles in Imperial Struggle are a kind of draft where you really need to keep in mind what investment tiles are available and plan your turns around exploiting that. E.g., you generally want to maximise event plays and generally you want to have the last diplomatic action in order to undo the opponent taking some diplomatic space with an advantage.

And even then it's only a half-fitting example because it's not about hate drafting exactly, but maximising your own utility from the draft while keeping in mind what the opponent might do. I'm not sure I've ever explicitly hate drafted in this game.

Back to square one, shit mechanic and shit form of interaction.

Adventure, how?
The DnD adventure series is campaign with fighting and loot, but not open world.
Earthborne Rangers is open world, but character progression is limited and entirely encapsulated by adding/removing cards from your deck.
Mage Knight is meant to be completed in a single setting.

7th Citadel is top of the heap from what I've played. Probably not so easy to find a copy though.
>>
>>98347898
If denying your opponent resources wins you the game more effectively than playing solitaire, it's not "suboptimal."
>>
>>98348223
This. Take a game like It's a Wonderful Life where you can recycle cards that you hate draft. Your opponent behind you has a blue engine that's going to score a lot of points and you need to recycle a card for a yellow cube to complete one of your developments. Do you take the blue one with a yellow cube or a green one with a yellow cube? Even if you didn't need a yellow cube, blue cards score so many points that it might even be worth you sacrificing a 2 point development to deny them 15 points.

>>Who is your board game waifu/crush
Accept no substitute.
>>
>>98348266
*It's a Wonderful World
>>
>>98348223
It is suboptimal in 3+ player games because by playing suboptimally compared to those who don't hate draft you are also denying yourself the win. A single hate drafter might not be enough in some cases, requiring multiple players to get involved and "balance" the game. And if it gets to that point, you might as well just be playing Root.

This is why I specifically said that only in 2P this mechanic could possibly be redeemable.

>It's a Wonderful Life
Never heard of this one, I'll look into it.

Gloomhaven/Frosthaven are the kings of dungeon crawling, but these games are absolute beasts. Even if you play regularly, a campaign of Gloomhaven can easily take you more than a year.

Rather than literally walking around exploring the map, the "exploration" in these is more in the form of a progressing branching campaign which is constituted out of scenarios, along with a plethora of discoveries and unlocks like new items, character abilities, events, mechanics, etc. Everything you'd want out of a dungeon crawler basically.

Nah. For 2 players, I almost exclusively play games that are designed for it. Games with variable player counts tend to benefit from the board being filled in by more players. The only exception is campaign style games where more players make it more of a burden/slower.

>>
>>98353484
>is it dead
Kinda yes in my opinion but then again I don't see how second edition is becoming more alive. The expansions where always pretty expensive and the second hand market doesn't sell cheap. So now those aren't getting reprints for sure. That being said the game is still out there and has everything you could possibly need. Betting on second edition while it doesn't have a fraction of content compared to the already existing one doesn't make much sense. You can build investigator decks and play through several adventures for many many hours.
And if you really want, there are several fan made campaigns with really good quality you can print&play.

I tried to bring it to my group several times but it never really clicked so I only own the base game and played it a bit on TTS. By the way, there is a discord where you can get ALL campaigns and investigators for your tabletopsimulator for free. So if you yourself and/or your lads are interested you can play everything for free before deciding on buying into it.
>>
>>98353627
Thanks for the insight! Have you and your group clicked with any other Eldritch themed games? Looking for something to scratch that itch.
>>
>>98353915
NTA but it depends on what you're looking for. The Eldritch/Arkham/Mansions of Madness/Elder Signs are all similar in the sense that they're played in one-off scenarios and are basically just dice chuckers with different levels of involvement. My personal preference out of these is Mansions of Madness because it provides a much more immersive experience via the app. It's not a particularly good or strategic game, but if you're interested in this stuff going in, it should at least hold your interest enough to play each scenario once.

AH TCG on the other hand is much more involved because
A) It has cross-match progression (campaigns, carrying over your characters to different scenarios)
B) It is a deck constructor, for lack of a better term, and is very front-loaded. Especially if you want to jump in with lots of content, there is such an amount of investigator cards to build your deck that you can easily spend an evening just building your starting deck.
So it's not really something you can just sit down and play, and I personally don't have the patience for it since at the end of the day it also partially boils down to "you pulled a tentacle from the bag and died" kind of garbage. If I ever need a fix of that, I'll just pull out Mansions of Madness, play a single scenario, and leave it on the shelf for another year.

Some people swear by it and say that a lot of scenarios are well-made, but having played through the base campaign and jumping into the full TTS mod, I just bounced off of it. Not the kind of game I'd like to spend inordinate amounts of time on.

Side note about frontloading in general. Earthborne Rangers does the same kind of thing by basically showing you all the cards of each class and having you build a deck before you've even played the game. It also has multiclassing, so you have to sit there thinking which of the classes work best in combination.

So I spent the first evening just sitting there figuring out the decks for two characters until I came up with a busted build that can basically already beat the game. And then the game offers extremely few opportunities and even options to upgrade your deck (20 reward cards lmao), so you're pretty much stuck playing whatever you picked for however many dozens of hours a campaign takes.

Not very engaging, either in terms of the starting experience, or in terms of progression in the game itself.

>tl;dr
frontloading sucks
>>
>>98353484
Dead, no. Dying, yes. Not enough new stuff for new to Arkham players and little incentive for legacy players to buy into the new edition. I don't have any gripes really with the new edition but there's no reason for me to buy a new core to get 75% of the cards I already have just so I can play scenarios that come out at a glacial pace. A lot of the people in my groups have complained about the scenarios and the low quality components (the game day box warps, acrylic tokens scratch and are missing tokens for the upcoming scenario).

If I were going to reboot it - I'd put 5 brand new investigators in the box with a 4 player card pool, my first big campaign would tie the new investigators to the results of your Drowned City campaign to get legacy players on board, and I would 100% move back to the OG Arkham release model with 2 scenario campaign expansion and monthly blister packs.

I have no idea what the designer Eric is thinking with releasing the Dahan expansion before a 2nd edition. Since he won’t fork over the money to get the rights to the art, everything won’t be compatible once the 2nd edition releases. Why buy the Dahan expansion if you know you can’t use it when you upgrade? Not to mention that the Dahan expansion is in development hell. It’s been cooking for way too long for it to be elegant design. He should just bite the bullet, do a 2nd edition and then go back to his vanity Dahan project.
>>
>>98356936
At this point, the only thing I'd be interested in are a few more adversaries.
If that Dahan exp ever releases I am likely ignoring it. I ignored Horizons/Nature for years and even once getting them, my group is mostly playing Base/Jagged/Promo spirits.
