How do you like YOUR gnomes, /tg/? Tell me how you incorporate them into your world.
>>
Gnarly.
>>
Dead. Buried six feet under.
>>
They wildshape into cute woodland creatures in order to peep on elf maidens while they're changing or to gain their trust enough to bathe with them.
Though some of them are mean enough to kidnap elf maidens against their will and lock them in their woodland cabin basements.

Golarion gnomes are the only incarnation I've enjoyed.
TL;DR Former fey addicted to experiencing new things, one guy asks "what would it be like to be mortal" and the entire race is fucked into these mortal humanoids that need to continually seek out new experiences or start to lose their colors, effectively dying in their own way of old age, with crazy gnomes doing increasingly dangerous/retarded things to stave it off further. I think there was some side lore about more stoic gnomes becoming immortal chinese hermits, but thought that was kinda lame.

Would not willingly put them into my own settings except as a type of woodland sprite and/or earth elemental
>>
Having 3 types of short people always felt redundant to me.

the wonders of another vague question about worldbuilding, i'm sure glad we had this thread

Gnomes are kinda like nomadic gnostic jews. the live in gnomoria. descended from originally forest dwelling dwarves

sometimes they still populate natural caves and caverns carving dwellings into them but never do they do the industrial work needed to create the giant mountain fortresses of the dwarves or have such complex entrances
preferring their dwelling, private or communal, are hidden well with only key gnomish markings or sigils to give
clue of where and what these entrances are to.

they are the foundational discoverers, philosophers, and inventors of magickal items and formulae that is popular among humans where as elves and the other races have their own forms of magick, but gnomes are credited with giving magick to the common man.

Gnomes can be very small like the size of a pinecone. may be born from trees and rocks

gnomes do learn to talk to trees but thats kinda like trying to talk to a wise mystical yogi while
hes in the middle of meditating its disrespectful to just do it out of no where and you have to learn to talk to a tree from another tree

Gnomish healing balm that is alive and eats pain.

I just really dislike dnd-derived gnomes. Hell, I don't like Poortvliet's ones (snazzy books, but they are about the final race of mary sues).
I'm sure you CAN have decent gnomes, probably somethink akin to domestic elves, but that's beside the point.

I like Christmas and i always try to make my settings about Christmas. Anyways, Gnomes serve under Santa and they peddle their services by protecting the houses of otherworldly creatures and sometimes mortals. They take care of the garden, drive away pests, and generally keep unwanted beings out of the house.
Like most elves they have access to magic and are quite resourceful. They can turn into stone-statue like forms to conserve energy while they stand watch
