If you had to recommend one generic system for a GM to learn which would it be and why?
>>98363471Savage Worlds. Not because it's great, but because it is by far the absolute easiest system to pull new enemies out of your ass with and have stats that reflect them appropriately. Power levels are easy to maintain in universal way as a result. This may not seem like a huge deal but as someone who played a lot of generic systems, it is a MASSIVE benefit when making stuff whole cloth.Genesys, BRP, and FATE (accelerated, core sucks) all have their pluses and minuses. SW also has its own pluses and minuses, but piss easy customization puts it at the top my list for anybody wanting to start mucking about generic systems because that should be THE selling point of a generic system.
>>98363471Warhammer 40k obviously. Dude, work on your spam. At least try and pretend you've seen a traditional game.
>>98363471Hold on a minute, let me get something obscure for the sake of it..........................................Tales from the Floating Vagabond.
>>98363471Mini Six. It's good and it's free.
>>98363471FATALBecause if they like it, I don't wanna talk to themand if they hate it, I don't want normies anywhere near me
>>98363471Praying that picrel isn't AI, but my hopes aren't high.
>>98363471GURPS
>>98363699Yes, mini six is great, it's free, is probably the best of the opend6 derivatives despite its (fixable) flaws, yet, sadly, it is not great at showing all the ropes to newbie GMs.
>>98363471Ben Robbins "Follow"It's not good, but it's easy to learn, easy to teach, and will let you understand why you want a themed ruleset.
>>98365353I mean, it's not "for" that. You could definitely write a new group primer for it, though. It's not inherently counterintuitive or anything.
Genesys my beloved. I don't recommend it though since the dice are hard to get and players are to stupid to learn it. But it is just so fucking good.
>>98365353what are its flaws? i heard that carbon grey's version of d6 is supposed to be very good. but i have no experience with the systems whatsoever.
>>98363517Dude, same. SW combat also runs buttery smooth because 90 percent of the enemies are just a dice value, a damage value, and maybe a gimmick if I'm feeling froggy.
>>98366180I remember the combat hitting a weird scaling block once something has a high enough toughness.>>98363471Probably DnD 5e because that is probably what you are going to end up having to play. you know this is the case practically speaking. And I say this as someone who's preferred system is Barbarians of Lemuria.
>>98363471exalted versus war of darknessit's less clunky and more functional than both exalted and world of darkness put together, you don't even need to run exalts or anything with it, just go wild and do any part of owod with it, it all flows better
>>98366048>carbon grey's version of d6Yeah it's good, Carbon Grey is Magnetic D6 I think, so a modified OpenD6, Mini Six is a streamlined OpenD6, the most obvious change is that it uses 4 attributes instead of 6, the second one is a reduction of skills and making them a little broader too, it works. >what are its flaws? It's not easy to run as a noob GM, but if you are used to be a GM and you had run other TTRPG systems for a table, then you already know the ropes and what to do, the Mini Six Book is very short in explaining those sort of things deeply, expects the reader to be acquainted with being a GM, and mostly focuses on delivering the streamlined rules, giving brief examples of stock characters and scenarios. The whole thing fits in 38 pages, including covers. So it is a non-issue for those who already know how to be GMs. And if you had run OpenD6 games before it is a breeze to set up a game using Mini Six.Other minor flaws are solved with common house rules mentioned on internet, like Mini Six having a flawed magic system, some people reduce the Target Number for spells, others go for something more simpler for a magic system, etc. The author explained this discrepancy because they couldn't test it plenty back then, because they were fearing issues with the licensing would close the window for publication. One favorite solution for the (perceived) lethality issue is using Body Points (basically HP) instead of the wound table, and using armor values as Damage Reduction instead of using the Soak static value. So overall, the core is pretty good, flexible, modular, always mentioned as elegant and a great design, the flaws are minimal and easily fixable, specially by veterans.
anyone got OVA experience and wants to tell me about it?
>>98363880My brother in Steve Jackson, I will see you in the Promised Land.
>>98365695Seconding. One of the best rpg systems out there. Dice procurement is tricky but there are apps if you just want to give it a spin. Also there are now 3rd party makers of the dice and even dyi options out there.
FATE. It may not be the greatest, but it's very different from regular RPGs and might help broaden a GM's horizons.
>>98363471Mythras since it can do basically anything, even high powered shit with the Destined supplement and the rabble/henchmen rules to allow you to cut through hordes of mooks without breaking a sweat.
>>98363471G U R P SURPS
>>98365695I'll promote Genesys as well. Learning the proprietary dice is the first and biggest hurdle, but once you're over that, you have an incredibly powerful and flexible mid-crunch system that runs more or less anything.
G U R P SU URRPPSS
>>98363517I hate SW books and how much content they lack. Especially the core book.
>>98363471GURPS. Memes aside, at its core is extremely easy and you can expand on It with all the splatbooks you desire. Also, the books are great reading and ispirati on materiale even if you don't plan to play it
>>98363517Probably Mythras. Very easy to understand percentage system, very open ended for making new content. It also forces you to learn how to make engaging combat encounters and results because the system demands it. It will teach you pretty well, I think, and you will probably be able to recognize shitty systems on sight afterwards.
>>98363880this but downgrade from 3d6 to 2d6it's Polish system Oko Yrrhedesa, mechanics kinda similar to these paragraph fantasy books
>>98374130Whoops. Meant to reply to the OP.
>>98363471BRP is great for anything limited to normal humans. Personally i dont think it does super heroes or heroic fantasy well, but it can do sci-fi and gritty fantasy pretty well.
>>98365695Genesys is probably the best all rounder generic system available, I do not recommend it though. The dice are hard to come by, the CRB is one of the weakest CRB in generic systems, and it's one of the hardest systems to get into from a complete newbie standpoint. That said, if you do understand it and get to the point where you are reading dice pool results like second nature? By far one of the best resolution mechanics in gaming. Enemy and item creation are middle of the pack in terms of complexity. Easier to make shit up whole cloth with established rules compared to GURPS but harder than SW. The benefit of the system is it can be as low powered or high powered as you want it and it works really well. So while I love it to bits, never gonna recommend it to newbies ever.
>>98366302If you got something with really high toughness, it's supposed to be a roadblock. If the PCs have absurd toughness, then the GM was handing out shit they shouldn't have.
>>98373035FATE core is dog shit.Accelerated is MUCH better at accomplishing what Core was attempting to do and I'll recommend that for the whole collaborative story telling style of play, honestly.
>>98373676Nah, SW understands it's a toolbox and not a established game. The CRB gives you the rules, explains it well enough, and tells you how to make shit. The campaign books are settings and shows how it's done to apply the CRB to make that setting work. That's how a generic system should be done.
>>98373932The only people I ever encountered IRL that played GURPS were prison inmates that thought the D&D 3e players were brainlets. This was around 2005 and the GURPS crew consisted exclusively of lifers. I associated GURPS with criminals for a long ass time.
>>98363471Never really found a decent one.
>>98374346I mean, the feds did confuse a GURPS sourcebook for a cybercriminal guide that one time
>>98365695The dice are easy to find now. Just go to amazon. They reprinted the shit out of them.
>>98374302It feels like a system to sell you extra books. I hate how piecemeal the content in the core book is. It's like a demo or a starter set.
>>98363601Dude, you could at least know the existence of Second Edition that was put about by the Creator's friends cuz he flipping died.
>>98374820What is lacking in it in your opinion?
>>98363471Bastionland, either Electric or Mythic
>>98374554Not in my country :-(
>>98376530>I recommend two games entirely built around character and world creation being very specific things with special abilities, inventory and their entire purpose for adventuring being tied into the setting, for generic ttrpgs.
>>98363471FATE, just so they can say that they tried it and didn't like it.
>>98363471I would recommend BRP or mythras. Both are very solid and applicable to many different types of games even with just the base games.
