Does anyone else really despise the discourse around metagaming?

I mean, do we really have to put on this big performance where we pretend we don't know that trolls regenerate? Wouldn't adventurers in the tavern be sharing tips like using fire on trolls?

Similarly, there's always that one guy wasting his perfect memory policing who knows what. Can't we just assume the PCs share non-secret information between scenes? Similarly, maybe it doesn't make sense to trust a new PC who joins up because there's a new player or an old PC died, but can we just get to the fucking game instead of hazing them? We're all busy adults here.

We really should start separating between "role playing games" that are just board games with more autism, and games where people actually want immersion.

>Using the knowledge of basic genre's tropes
>Using a plot relevant information obtained by a different PC when this PC had an opportunity to potentialy share it and zero reason not to
These are perfectly fine
>Using lore knowledge that most fans of the settings know, but most in-universe characters explicitly aren't aware of
>Doing something based on information another PC obtained, but likely wouldn't share or had no opportunity to do that yet
>Doing something that would make zero sense for your character in a given situation simply because you as a player want to cause a certain expected outcome
Those are not

The anti-metagaming is way more annoying, where your fire-loving sorcerer encounters a Troll and is suddenly "uhhh... guess I'll use frostbolt!".

If you're a GM who gets bothered by metagaiming, just reskin your monsters. For example use the medusa statblock and then grab a picture of a creature from a videogame (or something else key part is it's not in the TTRPG you're playing) and describe that instead.

We especially hate it when you use words like "Discourse".

Why use a five dollar word when a fifty cent one will suffice?

The terminology seems to emanate from those looking to retire words like "Argument" or "Debate" because they sound "Too aggressive".

It is a shibboleth.

Also, hazing the new guy is traditional.
It's a test of mettle, and a rite of passage.
If he has a tardout under some mild pressure the group will reject him.
Similarly, if the new guy finds the hazing too severe or distasteful to his sensibilities, he can leave, and consider it a prior warning.

>>98369914
As much as 4e's bear lore was derided, I think having knowledge skills about different monsters is the way to go
It's like how in the Witcher world the old wives' tales are all wrong and nobody knows the first thing about how monsters really work, apart from Witchers
>>
>>98372701
I dislike your hypocritical nature.
>>
>>98372771

And If you're gonna use a five dollar word at least break out some subject matter that warrants it.

We really are being purposefully dumbed down for nefarious reasons. Colleges are closing down all over the country. Many people don't even the attention span to watch TV shows anymore.

I have an office job and we were told to keep our language at an 8th level in a meeting a couple months ago. People just assume you're speaking down to them and go on the attack if you use a word they don't know. It's not treated as an opportunity to learn something new and everyone's too much of a retard to use their pocket computer to Google the meaning.

It's a ruse in part.
They wish to denude you of your native "Framework" so they can supplant it with their own.
Language is the tool with which you navigate the world.
Leftoids have an intuitive understanding of this, but they mistakenly think language can be manipulated instrumentally in order to "bend" how people perceive reality; instead, they just invent new dialects that gradually become mutually unintelligible to most people.

They know that, which is why they try to "get them young".
Hence why the teachers unions are infested with Marxists.
>>
>>98373273

I think the problem is that we've been using kiddie gloves with the hoi polloi to avoid alienating them when the truth is they secretly want to be put in their place and told what to do. They're like toddlers acting up because they want to figure out where the boundaries are and be reassured that the adults are in control. Our easygoing approach backfired and now the government is full of people who think "Epic Fury" sounds like a cool name for a military operation and soccer moms who didn't go to college think they're smarter than doctors.

The first step to regaining control is to openly ridicule the brainlets. Yes, we do think you're stupid if only know one language and never read books for fun. Yes, having college degrees does make us superior to people who don't.

The PCs should be the only adventurers in the tavern. If adventurers are common enough that they can be regularly advising each other, there's no need for the PCs in the world.

I think we can all agree that a player who has no knowledge of a secret room where an enemy is being interrogated in runs across the map, finds the secret door and kills the target because the player can't wait one minutes without action is bullshit? Or when the GM sets up their town where everyone just so happens to be 5 levels higher then the players and if you try to do anything about being bullied around you get your shit kicked in by a hard counter build?

>Wouldn't adventurers in the tavern be sharing tips like using fire on trolls?
How experienced are the adventurers? How well known are trolls' weaknesses? In general I'd say if it's pop-culture knowledge in reality it's not metagaming because in a world where these things are real would know them. The issue with metagaming often arises when playing a module and a player reads ahead the module to for example know what dream pies do for Curse of Strahd. Everyone knows stakes kill vampires, there's no reason for a random asshole to know the layout of Strahd's castle or about the mansion at the start that often kills players.

This smells like a Motte and Bailey fallacy. It's easy to defend why the PCs should be allowed to metagame that trolls are susceptible to fire and acid, because trolls are not extraordinarily rare and there are tons of people who've fought them and could share that they are. It is much harder to defend why the PCs would know that a Glabrezu has TS. It becomes really dicey if you'd argue that because the metagaming surrounding Trolls are acceptable, then ALL metagaming should be acceptable.

Greetings newfriend! I am Not The Anon You Replied To, sometimes simplified into
>NTAYRT
or
>NTA
for Not That Anon.
The use of greentext, or
>nazi arrows
for which 4chan is infamous, can be to simplify or paraphrase, or imply, or sarcastically represent a previously stated post. Sometimes these modes of linguistic play can be combined in a variety of amusing ways. So in the case of the post you replied to, they are making an amusing paraphrase of the Original Post, or OP that highlights how silly the initial question or premise is from a new perspective.
As a bonus, OP is a fag in all cases, but a different kind of fag than you.
Hope this helps, enjoy your stay.

If everyone at the table has the Monster Manual memorized, it's probably time to find a new game to try or create some custom monsters.

If it's a plot-y game where the players keep secrets from each other, maybe that should be done by emails etc so the in-person sessions can focus on stuff the group is collaborating on. I'd just rather not be in the game to begin with if I have to sit around doing nothing while others are doing schemes my PC is oblivious to.

I've done this, the walking away part. I'm too old to care about earning some rando's aproval. I'm also too old to test if someone will tolerate me being a piece of shit to them. Tolerating a hazing ritual to play a game is not a possitive indicator.

Why would the players have common adventurer knowledge if they never speak with adventurers?

If they try to get information then they have that information. Knowing that they have to research local monsters and get tips from others can be meta, they are doing it because they know it's a game, but it's completely valid. Just knowing because the player knows is cheating. Trolls can be useful for newfags to understand this isn't a videogame where they can just move from encounter to encounter and read a walkthrough online. They have to interact with the world to know about it, and in the process you can develop other stuff like rival parties, scammers, quest givers, and so on. If they just fight the GM is stuck being a computer processing data, they could just play munchkin at that point.
>>
No. If the player knows, so does the character.

>Wouldn't adventurers in the tavern be sharing tips like using fire on trolls?
No because "adventurers" don't exist and them "sharing tips" "in the tavern" sounds a lot like adventuring guild bullshit which wouldn't happen.
But yeah people would likely know that fire stops trolls regrowing. However there'd be plenty of tall tales that pissing on dead trolls stops them regenerating too so you wouldn't know for sure what's true.
>>
Adventuring guilds exist and they function exactlt as they do in anime. Characters can physically see their own game statistics in the world.
>>
The monster manual exists in the world and adventurers can read it to discover any monster's properties. Also, magic glasses exist which reveal the game statistics of anything you look at. There are also spells that produce the same effect.
