>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.

The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre. Let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet & Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Full Spectrum Dominance, Gaslands,
HeroClix, Kings of War, Lords & Legends, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, Sahipkıran, Sludge, Space Weirdos, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sword Weirdos,
Urban War, Void Admiral, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Goblin King Games, Lucid Eye, Mantic,
North Star Military Figures, OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat,
Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

Do you care if a game has its own setting and lore? Is it important for you to have a world and story to explore?
>>
>>98370765
I'm an idiot, turns out you can get a handful of 15mm figs for $0.30 if you just combine them into one plate.
Previously I had been doing 1 fig = 1 plate.
>>
starting a first time frostgrave campaign, doing the thaw of the lich lord.
do you suggest using the optional rule for random encounters spawning after each treasure token? (on 10+)
just looking at the npcs, theres only a couple per fight, minus the lich lord fight. I figured there would be more skeletons, but its only armored skeletons again with the Lich
>>
>>98373350
How many players and what level are you guys starting at?
>>
>>98373350
Of course, just add skeleton archers to the encounter table.
>>
>conquest is adding named characters
god fucking damn it i should have just played kings of war or oathmark
>>
>>98373544
KoW has named characters as well, doesn't it?
>>
>>98373389
3 players and level 1? Wasnt planning on pre leveling. Unless one of the mini campaigns is worth doing first? We havent played before, besides 2 of us just doing a test game

>>98373444
Didnt see archers even on table. But i do have corssbow minis. Was trying to not start home brewing until the second campaign haha
>>
>>98373559
It does. About a handful of which are actual characters in terms of "lore" the rest is just commanders/wizards with names.
>>
>>98373691
What's the difference between named characters in KoW and Conquest then?
>>
>>98373713
Dont know. Havent played neither.
>>
>>98373743
Then why are you mad about Conquest getting named characters? I'm confused.
>>
>>98373761
cause he's not me. i was the one complaining about conquest. i didn't know about kings of war or oathmark, just that i bought into conquest cause i liked the look of the models, but i hate named characters and shit cause it makes the meta to not make up your own army but to play whatever pre-built lore supports those characters
>>
>>98373563
skeleton archers are hidden in 2ed core book, in bestiary but not on encounter table, ranged opponents are essential.

Best game for mass vehicle combat? Sci-fi is best but modern or whatever works. Would love alternating activation. Preferably with land carriers and little to no infantry units.
Was looking into Dystopian War but dislike the activation system and it involves infantry units. There's also Ogre, which seems neat, but anyone got any other suggestions?

I got into this hobby recently and man there are just so many cool games I started checking out and want to try. Various skirmish sci-fi and fantasy, platoon sized sci-fi in 15mm.
And the minis! I found so many cool little dudes. Started planning an army of goblins with a pair of trolls from Knightmare, but there are a bunch of options from Northstar as well like their Oathmark elf army or just Frostgrave Cultist Knights-Cultist 3 and Barbarians seem like a cool kitbash trio. Also found a guy who's doing fairly priced resin printing so I could just get nearly whatever from STL groups and some creators who have very nice offers on their catalogs...
Stumbled upon Warmonger minis, Alternative Armies, Red Bard Games and Diehard minis too, all offering so many cool stuff, the only caveat is UK shipping.
I have to admit I might be a bit autistic but I'm almost getting overwhelmed, and haven't even talked about making terrain.

Funny to think that around 15 yrs ago I looked at 40k thinking of trying it, but never did. Then a year ago I randomly bought 2 boxes of Quar and now here I am.

Thank you for reading my blog and being my source of info and gateway to the hobby in the past year /awg/.

Honestly I'm starting to feel like terrain, immersion, etc is more important than the quality of the rules.
If you have a great scenario, great immersive table, great painted minis, then the game will always be a fun and enjoyable experience even if the chosen ruleset is ass. Conversely, if you have the best ruleset in the world but dogshit warhammer tier terrain and unpainted models then the game will still en unenjoyable shit
>>
>>98374083
You have found the way. This is the reason we play wargames instead of video games. It is the entire purpose of tabletop gaming in general, and why it is superior to digital.
>>
>>98374083
I mostly agree, but fun rules and a lot.
And rules can be fun, without being balanced, complex, or even good.
>>
>>98374083
eh. Good terrain, immersion, and 'vibes' ARE important but they can't cover for a bad ruleset. Now matter how nice the board, or how deep the lore, if the rules are a slog to play, you're not going to play them. Then all that nice fancy terrain sits unused.

Varies. My favorite wargame has been Mutant Chronicles Warzone bc of og rpg lore from the sourcebooks. Very fun world. I entertain Warhammer lore but hate the game and GW shenanigans with a passion. I play a little Battletech but think the lore is the most awful, oppressive shit ever. Canadian Norwegians mercenarying to Chinese samurai in indentured servitude with 90s fan pictures as the official art portraits? Fucking barf I don't want to read anymore.
>>
>>98373786
Yeah, I have to compare them to regular versions, but at first glance, they seem a bit good for what they are. At least on the thematic side, Conquest has always been pretty closely tied with that aspect before they were introduced. The way army construction works, and sub-factions in the newer lists, its always been thematic heavy.
>>
>>98372666
>TQ
There is no lore or setting more rich and stimulating than the story of the White Race, ie. European History, and all his great achievements and follies. Which is why I am such a huge fan of historical wargaming.
For Scifi and fantasy I like a more generic approach, assuming you have the capacity to fill in the blanks. I know the majority of the rabble playing games are complete NPCs and need someone to do the imagination part for them, which is why things like Warhammer or Battletech and Quar have their place

The best wargames have already been made and gone, but nothing stops you from buying the books and miniatures, especially when both books and miniatures are still produced such as for Vor, Void 1.1 and Crucible. You can absolutely buy and play the first edition of warmachine too, its very much readily available on ebay in box.

I've been reading the book for the Zyhkee for VOR and my god, lovely art, and so much lore. History, culture, diet, breathing, religion etc. all the background on top of the game play, things used to be so well made.

It is a game world based on clashing cultures. This gigantic galactic black hole swallows up planets, and on the otherside they smash into each other. Some planets combine such as the home planet of the Zykhee who are technologically advanced but choose to live naturalistically after having a war due to reliance on technology, and the home planet of the growlers which are these gigantic ape like creatures that hunt and hunt and eat and eat, relentlessly.

A short space ship away will take you to earth where neo soviets and the advanced union were already engaged in a civil war, soviets using experiments and mutants whilst the union use advanced tactics and battle suits. Now everyone has to survive in the maelstrom.

VOR is basically FASA's version of a 40k 2e killer. IWM and Ral Partha Europe still make the models but there hasn't been any actual movement on it since FASA went under.
Similar time frame, ideas, and scale to Shockforce/WarEngine (Demon Blade games), Aberrant (White Wolf), Warzone, and Void/Urban War (which was made by the company Heartbreaker turned into after their bankruptcy). I'm more of a WarEngine nerd because I hack the shit out of everything I play. VOR had cool ideas but the model designs weren't doing it for me and I'd had more than enough of FASA games at that point.

Good lore and settings add a lot to a game. Pro forma "this factions in this setting exactly mirror 40k designs and army structures haha what a coincidence" shit is a boring waste of paper most of the time. If you're going to do it, do it as awesomely retarded as Shock Force

NTA but it was IGOUGO and each model had movement points it could spend to move 1" per and attacks and actions cost a variable number of movement points. So a dude with a submachinegun could fire it for 3mp and still be able to move 5" or fire it a second time, while a missile launcher would cost 6 or 7 mp.

Growlers had to be basically redone for their force book because they essentially never got into melee before getting killed or got into melee and then couldn't afford to attack.

Attack resolution was d10 roll under to hit, d10 roll under to armor save, d10 roll under to wound.

Every so often I see articles about Drakkon coming back to "mainline" and post-post-post Shattered Grid and oh Lord it sounds dire. Ranger Academy left a horrible taste in my mouth.

>Gorkamorka's bellyflop

I would like to remind everyone once again that Gorkamorka sold just as well as Necromunda, they just massively overprinted because they were trying to compensate for Epic 40,000 flopping so hard they killed Epic and canceled the planned box release of Warmaster.

Epic 40,000 is the ultimate example that presentation matters in a wargame. Same basic rules of Battlefleet Gothic, but it feels more like an Avalon Hill hex and counter game than anything you'd want to paint miniatures for.

Do you have a recommended workshop table for Age of Fantasy and Skirmish?
>>
>>98379200
Lots of games these mechanics, some do it better than others, some have better combinations for their context
My personal favorite for reaction systems was SST/early BFEvo (before the hardcover)
But Chain Reaction has a great "reaction" system for hot and heavy cinematic style fights
etc

Any of you guys 3d print terrain? Just painted up some buildings I recently painted own. I'm going for an entire table filled with urban terrain, I've dreamed of it since I was a teen
>>
>>98381312
Ive got a few 3d printed things like statues and such but I enjoy terrain crafting too much to deprive myself of that by 3d printing everything.
>>
>>98381381
I have been terrain crafting for a decade, and in that decade I have created by hand only a few more buildings than I have printed out in the last week, and the printed ones look better. I still get the terrain building satisfaction by painting the 3d prints and making them not look like prints.
The biggest drawback with handcraft is that it takes a massive amount of time, especially if you want things to look GOOD

Also, some stuff like roads, hills, bushes, rivers, trees, etc. can never be printed and must still be hard crafted
>>
>>98381312
Looks pretty nice!
>>
>>98381312
I printed two modular buildings and realized I have now way of storing a table worth of terrain that size.
I am printing modular walls, doors, plattforms and stairs for a necromunda-ish terrain instead. Not as pretty, but easier to store.
>>
>>98381901
>no where to store
What are you poor?
>>
>>98381977
No, but with wife and kids, there simply is no spare room for a terrain collection in the house, simple as that.
>>
>>98381984
I have a wife and three kids

Are there any fantasy wargames games with mechas in them?
>>
>>98382124
Warmachine is the notable one. Relic Knights but it's dead as a doornail.
>>
Any good inuit style miniatures that aren't Mantic's Northern Alliance?
You'd think Frostgrave would have some but only the barbarians sort of fit if you swap the bare arms out
>>
>>98382329
Mythic America has some Inuit
>>
>>98382333
Nice. I thought that was entirely a Warlord thing and long dead
>>
>>98382341
It was never a warlord thing besides warlord had license to sell them for a couple of years. They did not extend that license, and now the distribution is back to the IP owners. Could be good if you are US based, for everyone else they are harder to get now I believe.
>>
>>98381312
Those roof tiles came out real nice.
I always find them fiddly when laying the card strip ones that come with mdf build kits.
But then, I mostly build ruins and hovels, and wobbly roof tiles are fine on such.
>>
>>98381312
>shitter right in the middle of the town square
Also these look great, I long to run a campaign in a section of a city one day, the design of a table is sadly lacking in most games now.
>>
>>98382111
A wife and three gaming recruits. Nice!
>>
>>98373544
You should have known you shouldn't play Conquest when Conquest was putting QR codes in boxes instead of instruction manuals and army rules
>>
>>98381312
I'm in the middle of printing a table worth of terrain in epic scale.
>>
>>98380299
>I stick to nostalgia.
Entirely fair and understandable. I no longer watch the show as it reached such awful levels of saccharine that I could no longer tolerate it.
>Ranger Academy
Only pain can be found in the confines of that comics pages...
>>
>>98383005
I tried to watch some of Beast Morphers while it aired, absolute suffering. I can hardly blame it on nostalgia considering I was just a kid when MMPR aired but my younger siblings were kids when Dino Thunder/SPD/Mystic Force aired and I watched and enjoyed it with them.
>>
>>98383026
>Beast Morphers
I spared myself the misery of watching that one. But for real, the older shows are just better.
>>
>>98383060
The new shows feel like they have no understanding of what old fans or potential new watchers want. The fights are awful, the characters are soggy cardboard and the nu-designs are awful. Add the Ken Penders-tier "lore" and it is just a disaster.

Anybody know any good Rangifer minis? besides the official. Need a bunch of them and want more options. STLs are good as well, i can print
>>
>>98383070
I forced myself through all of Dino Fury because Zedd returned towards the end, it wasn't worth it, it was constant babies first conflict and one dude loses and arm, gets it replaced with a robotic prosthesis and nobody bats an eye
>the Ken Penders-tier "lore"
lol
Now that you mention it, I was checking out a Sonic the Hedgehog thread on /vg/ a couple of days ago. Now THAT place has got top quality schizos.
>>
>>98381312
Buying A1 mini and then P1S was the best decision ever. I sold all my scenery and just printed whatever I wanted for cents.
>>
>>98383082
I bashed some that are on the telegram channel.
will be redoing them for a more neolithic look in the future, but there are variety for now, no hooves on these though.
>>
>>98383232
mind sharing them here? i dont use telegram
>>
>>98383082
Warp minatures has a nice character full Deerman, but it's only available in the Beastfolk starter.
>>
>>98383271
limited data, and if you're acquiring STL's then you will have to start using telegram sometime, the alternative is spending lots of money on cults and mmf.
>>
>>98383322
limited data is fine, but stop accepting things as inevitable. we make our own choices, and i won't use telegram. i get along fine, people post when they can, as do i. if people need things, i share. gofile is free, and i live in the first world where internet is unlimited.

>>98383314
debating just getting these anyways, they are charming. but 50 for 5 minis? thats a little steep for a small game
>>
>>98383378
>and i won't use telegram
there isn't much of a reason not to "muh identity data" you think 4chan isn't doing the same? there are sooooooo many files there that aren't being shared elsewhere.the fristgrave channel has literally everything you need and most of what you could want on top of that, they had rangifer as well, but insanely high detailed ones with exorbitant tactical rocks, which is why I made mine.
>>
>>98383133
What a shame, Zedd was a honestly intimidating villain in MMPR, even after they toned him down after the complaints of parents. Power Rangers as a whole has always been badly managed, but it really is bleak to realize that it was probably at best with the Disney years. /vg/ is a nightmare, as a former /vitagen/ poster. The amount of mentally unstable, parasocial crazies is absolutely mind boggling.

MERCS.
5-man cifi spec ops in near-future corporate dystopia. You have a roster of roles and can pick 5 to deploy. Most factions have a a unique choice, like the Behemoth or pocket nuke. Movement and abilities were measured in card distances, encouraging fast and close engagements. I have fun memories of it.
>>
>>98383560
I like the cut of your gib anon, you're one of the real ones.

>Mantic Elves still on sale
I shouldn't do it, I know they are ugly as sin. NEVERTHELESS, 40 eurobucks for 60 infantry dudes and 2 ballistas does feel like a decent deal. I also want to test myself and see if I can paint them any better than Mantic.
>>
>>98383880
>I'd invite you to my gaming table any day.
Oh yeah? What would we play?
>>
>>98384011
Uh. Anything we can dig up rules for? I'm not picky and have enough miniatures to play a lot of games, even loaning out armies worth to my opponent.
>>
>>98381312
>>98381403
Similar boat, I started with 3d printing then realized that some things are better hand-crafted. Now I do both and mix them as needed.
>>
>>98383950
you absolutely can paint them better.
If you add cloaks, they are 100% better.

Then I'm bringing my copy of Open Combat, I haven't got to play it with anyone yet so it's mostly been solo skirmishes and scenarios with some unpainted Romans and Barbarians
>>
>>98381312
Incredible masonry bro. How did you achieve that effect?
>>
>>98382686
>>98382111
Free pussy on demand and three spawn you can force to game with you ... Some anons really have it all
>>
>>98384074
Hell yeah, saw it posted on here and it looks promising! I've got historicals and fantasy stuff I can use.
>>
>>98384093
It's gonna be a fun day at anons!
>>
>>98384074
this game looks pretty cool, just a shame it has no magic system and monsters
>>
>>98384269
You're supposed to use existing abilities to proxy in your spells, "Magic Arrow - Crossbow bolt" etc etc
>>
>>98384096
Presumably ending in a classic game of Catan on the table. Someone post the screencap.
>>
>>98384314
yeah, I know I read it all, but that's a bit lame
I mean what if I want other stuff that you can't really proxy like that
>>
>>98384575
Then homebrew it anon, the book is a pretty clear supporter of fun > balance
