Digging through fantasy art for monster ideas, and found this guy. How would you stat him? He's clearly some kind of mutated triceratops into a man. Some of the armour is worm, some of it seems to be growing directly out of his skin. I figure huge HP pool, huge armor and as well as being able to land strikes with his giant sword much like a dragon, he needs a charge and a bite attack.
I'm not good at this kind of thing and I'm DMing for the first time, so help would be appreciated.
>>
For what it's worth, I'm not sure it's a triceratops, I think the horns are part of its helmet. It sort of looks like one of those Unicorn helmets they used to put on war horses. Then again, like you said, it's hard to tell where the armor stops and the scales begin. Actually, I think what it might be is a knight and/or his horse that have been cursed to turn into a dinosaur.

I think an interesting encounter is more than stats. huge armor (hard to hit) is unfun for players when their turn is just "you miss". Hitting harder and not getting hit back is not a fun boss fight. "Huge HP" to make that fight last longer is also not fun.

I tend to get the best player reactions when a boss is either A.) highly interact-able, or B.) more of a set piece to a larger puzzle.

for A, "interact-able" if you want to riff with that weird looking armor, to me it looks breakable. Maybe emphasize that and really break out the object breaking rules of your system (or for DnD, have the thing resist all but blunt and thunder damage at first, but have a second "weak spot AC" that progressively drops as its scales fall off to let other damage types in). That way the fight is more about grappling the monster, hanging on its back, dodging, distracting and incapacitating it until it loses enough armor to fight it proper. consider environmental objects that you could have in the "room" for the purpose.

for B, "piece of a larger puzzle" maybe the player goal is just to get past the thing, and you emphasize how much the teeth will fucking cut you in half. The game here is dodging, distracting and incapacitating until a secondary goal is met. Have the monster grapple a lot so your players have to fight it to save a friend from its clutches more than to kill the beast.

or mash those two together, or give its tail a separate initiative and HP pool so you can cut it off like monster hunter or some shit. have players bait the charge attack with a taunt check while stakndng in front of a crumbling wall they need to get through but if they fail the subsequent dodge they get impaled on the horn or whatever.

I also liked >>98373847 's idea bout the teeth as the loot. you might offer your players a wager here, smashing the teeth makes it less dangerous and could save your friend, but leaving them intact makes more money.

I had the word "often" before unfun originally, but i went over the character limit. you are right though, I love a system that rewards debuffs and status effects, especially for martials. Unfortunately, I've had this go wrong for me a few times as both a player and a DM. I remember my like 2nd time every playing any sort of tabletop game at a friend-of-a-friend's apartment back in undergrad. we had the chance to set an ambush on some heavily armored knights wading through a swamp. As someone who never really played before I remember thinking "okay heavy armor means I might not get the attack roll, but maybe I can use the armor to my advantage?" I said i wanted to hide in swamp mud, pop up to grab a guy, and then drag him back into the muck to drown him. I still remember the DM's face and tone when he looked at me and said "can you just use an ability on your character sheet man?". I didn't know the grapple rules well enough to negotiate the matter with the DM. I proceeded to miss a bunch of attacks in a row as a low level rogue. it wasn't fun.

I've also DM'd games with high armor enemies because i wanted players to get creative. in retrospect I clearly didn't signal/hint hard enough (or didn't vet the knuckle draggers out of my group well enough). They just attacked a lot and missed a lot and got frustrated. fuck i think i recall the magic user was even using attack roll spells in whatever system we were trying out. this also wasn't fun.

i mean a lot of this comes down to playing with not dumb / inflexible people, but thats all /tg/ shit really. good people make good games.

side note: why did you screenshot my text instead of quoting or greentexting? odd behavior.
>>
why does it have teeth like that? horrifying
>>
>>98380797
Blunt teeth as a rule belong to herbivores, so I don't see the horror there. The giant fuck-off sword and impenetrable armor are absolutely horrifying, though.
>>
>>98380825
Herbivores will fuck you up. Hippos do more people in than lions and tigers.
>>
>>98380868
I forgot about hippos. Yeah, they're fucking nasty fellows.
>>
You could just join games that actually have rules for the fun things you want to do, instead of games that don't.

Nothing about what I said was vague in the slightest.
>>
>>98381191
who were you talking to? OP? you said "join games" but OP's talking about DMing and didn't mention a system?

this dude >>98380769 ? who said "my like 2nd time every playing any sort of tabletop game". that guy didn't sound like he knew all the systems out there at the time, but later he said "in whatever system we were trying out" which would imply he did branch out to other systems. You can improve your level of reading comprehension with practice, and your level of discourse by being specific and addressing points that other people make. you can reference posters on this site for ease of conversation, give it a try my guy, click on the No.# on their post. include some quotes. You'll figure it out soon newfriend :^]

unless you're being intentionally obtuse that is
>>
>>98381235
Intentionally obtuse it is. well, good luck nigga - with all those games you play and with all those friends you have. I've got some bloodbowl on sunday to prep for and look forward to.

I wonder what you're looking forward to in your life. maybe you have some models to work on?
