There's a funny story to how tabletop fantasy spread to Japan and how game transcripts took off so hard they created a whole literary genre and from that anime got its material. Games also had a big direct impact, but that's a given, since Japan got exposed to the genre later. Kind of annoying sometimes, how hard-welded some of their associations are to video games.

Shirow's artstyle was at's it's peak in the first Ghost in the Shell. I adore it. The new anime has been such a treat for how close it is to the manga artstyle.
