A place for discussion of pre-WotC D&D, OSR retroclones, and OSR-adjacent games.

>Is this a general?
No, just a place to discuss OSR and related content.
>Isn't there an OSR thread already?
No, the current regulars of /osrg/ have made it clear they only want to see a narrow subset of OSR games in the thread.
This means the name /osrg/ is somewhat misleading, but that's their problem.

Please report and ignore any trolling.

I think the early 90s was the golden age of Hex Crawling. That's when TSR was really just burning money on expensive prints without paying attention to the economical logistics, and Mystara got tons of great maps.
>>
>>98378154
Mystara is the best official D&D setting period.

Golden age was Gygax just making shit up while using the Outdoor Survival map, pretending he had complex rules governing explotation while just inventing things as he went along.
The best time to be DMing really was back when most players had no idea what the actual rules of the game were and just had to trust their DM, who was putting on a magic show where the players thought there was a brilliant and comprehensive rule system that could account for all of their actions and decisions, when the reality was just that everything relied on the DM calling the shots while pretending to be simply following the rules as a referee.

Players know too much these days. I long for the days when everyone thought the Mechanical Turk was an automaton.

So right now and always and forever.
>>
Three? You really need THREE concurrent threads on the catalog as part of your retarded little crusade????
>>
>>98378113
>>How's your current campaign coming along?
Slow and awkward.
The DM is inexperienced and seems to have read a lot of blog posts on how he's supposed to run the game, and he really tried to emphasize that he's going to be running it in a brutal fashion where we should be expecting at least one of the PCs to die each session.
After an early fight against some Carrion Crawlers almost turned into a TPK thanks to everyone getting paralyzed, our group ended up changing out approach and playing much, much more cautiously. As a result, no one's actually died so far, but our last session had nothing happen and the next session is probably going to be the same. There's no big incentives or rewards for playing quickly or taking big risks, so everyone's just taking their time and making sure everyone survives.

Last OSE game ended in an old elf fortress overrun with goblins. Feels like we were supposed to reach it at a much lower level or something.

We were just cruising. Killing goblins nonstop. Just a whole lot of "my math is bigger than your math thwacka-thwacka."
>>
>>98378113
Obvious troll thread. Not only was the old one not even at bump limit when you posted this, there's a previous active Open OSR thread on the board: >>98291369

Also, if you keep reposting a thread on a broad topic with the same OP, that makes it a general, fagballs.
>>
>>98378113
>the current regulars of /osrg/ have made it clear they only want to see a narrow subset of OSR games in the thread
This is a lie. All OSR games are allowed in the OSR General – naturally. The only thing that's not accepted is shitposting about non-OSR games.
>>
>>98378113
Shit all you do is endlessly bitch and moan and mald over osrg. Fucking pathetic
>>
>>98379046
He also makes sure to mald in every tangentially relevant thread, e.g. bursting into >>98359054 completely unprovoked to cry about ACKS. He's severely mentally ill.
>>
>>98379206
Your probably getting lulled into a false sense of safety. Make sure you keep your escape route open and secure.

Kind of amazing how a setting can die without support. No one ever talks about it, and it had great video games.
>>
>>98380381
Outside of Mr Welch, it gets basically no love.
Honestly, for the best, after what 5.5 did to greyhawk.
>>
>>98380381
It kinda reminds me of Eberron...
By that I mean extremely generic fantasy and airships.
>>
>>98378224
I'll take Faerun over it.

Just sifting through the FR wiki is guaranteed to provide dozens of ideas every time you do a wikicrawl.

Mystara is so good.

>How's your current campaign coming along?
solo BRPG dude here
I've ran into the same issues as >>98379102 but with a live game I'm running
the dungeon crawling progress slowed down to a halt
last time the players discovered a room, and they didn't even peak inside, just thrown some oil with lit rugs and backed away then they retreated to safety after one (!) random encounter
I guess I partially understand since it took them a long time to get to lvl 2 and the stakes of loosing a character is much higher now

I was thinking of having their favorite vendor kidnapped by the dungeon inhabitants
that should give them some incentive to get the flammable oil supply running
>>
>>98381997
The zero-content bumpfagging, you mean? Beats me.
>>
>>98379390
no need to be going in circles we have already discussed it in details
the thread you linked is an actual troll thread and I have a feeling you know it
>there's a previous active Open OSR thread on the board
actually that's the thread you've linked
there was no need for that thread to be created because there already was an Open OSR thread
but the troll made it anyway because he isn't interested in a genuine discussion, his interested in "owning" threads and narratives
on an anonymous board out of all places! shieeeesh! that's what spending too much time on redit and discord does to man I suppose
>>
>>98382430
>the thread you linked is an actual troll thread and I have a feeling you know it
NAYRT but is that why you stole its title lmao
>>
>>98382452
I'm not the OP anon

also how do you steal a thread title?

also despite how it works wherever you're from
anyone can make a thread here
and anyone can make a continuation of a thread
that's why I was OK with other anons making non-osrg OSR threads
until the osrg-troll started making threads with slightly more retarded OP text compared to every last thread to try to steer it into todd 2.0
and then he outed himself as an osrg-troll when he forgot to delete that (you)

anyway if you don't like alternative-to-osrg OSR threads you can use a feature called "hide thread"
>>
>>98382359
>I was thinking of having their favorite vendor kidnapped by the dungeon inhabitants
Could be fun
>the dungeon crawling progress slowed down to a halt
My players similarly were quite slow in their last session in stonehell, they've adaptad to play very cautiously, and i'm pretty happy with it, i just want them to delve deeper past 1A into the other quadrants at least.
>>
>>98382755
>they've adaptad to play very cautiously, and i'm pretty happy with it
meh.. it's boring for me as the DM
they are making a lot of plans and decisions, while I'm just sitting there waiting for their final call

and I do think it would be a better game would I come up with a way to create some meaningful pressure
otherwise the players develop cookie cutter template strats and the game turns into a chore
I hope I communicated that well, what I mean is without pressure the players use the same strategies everytime and that's boring as shit

kidnapping the shopkeep they get their flammable oil seems like a good call here
>>
Has anyone used the Dungeoneer's Survival Guide for rules or inspiration? It does seem like it has some interesting stuff for building your own underdark
>>
>>98385218
I haven't looked into it, but it looks like it could have some cool stuff.
I'm wary of things that get too rule-heavy though.
>>
waow look at all this in depth discussion
you sure know your stuff, anons!!!

This is really a high point. I really wish that more people looked into them, especially the "first decade only" type guys.
