>What is Lancer?
Lancer is a TTRPG about narratives, customizable mechs, and the pilots who crew them.

Set thousands of years in the future, Lancer imagines a future where humanity has spread to the stars after weathering terrible ecological collapse on Earth.
With a survival imperative, humanity’s organizing body, Union, seeks to manage the galaxy to ensure we’ll never again be faced with extinction.

Lancer features a mix of gritty, mud-and-lasers military science fiction and mythic science fantasy. In the setting, conscript pilots mix ranks with flying aces, mercenary guns-for-hire brawl with secretive corporate agents, and relativistic paladins cross thermal lances with causality-breaking, unknowable beings.
Players of Lancer adopt the roles of mech pilots. Some groups will fight for Union, working to rectify the crimes of previous administrations. Others, for a corpro-state, working to advance private interests while lining their pockets.

Lancer offers deep mech customization, a wide range of player backgrounds, and a system and setting with room for any story you and your group want to tell.

No, it's just a knight. A decent knight, but just a knight. It needs to properly balance knight and giant robot to really sell the design.

Not to mention the game's obsession with poorly done knightly mechs makes little sense within the context of these being Union corporations, and Union aesthetics are described in painstaking detail as bland, monotone onesies like out of THX 1138
>>
>>98391573
I dont think the corpos were ever described as bland except for GMS, which doesn't manufacture the Orchis
>>
>>98391589
Please actually read my post. UNION is described as bland and uniform. The corporations work under and for Union. Yet their aesthetics don't match the culture they were formed from and primarily sell to. This is yet another instance of every aspect of Lancer clashing with every other because it was all just slapdashed together with no sense of building an actual cohesive world.

Hours gets a pass as faggy as their mechs are since it's explicitly a le heckin wholesome vagueposting terrorist cell at least, but the rest should be informed by the aesthetic sensibilities of their host culture yet aren't.
>>
Come one, come all, to the forced general about the heckin wholesome communist mech game rpg that's got almost no role-playing elements in it, has no mechanics to present the feeling of piloting a mech, and where you could easily replace the "mechs" with fantasy superhero dnd characters and notice no difference!
The game written by devs whom openly hate the mecha genre and use it to push their politics and ideology, that's so well designed and streamlined it requires an app to make combat work and bring turns down to under an hour.
The setting where the big gay brown trans communist utopia are the good guys stomping down on the evil white guys with such overwhelming force their victory is inevitable, and magic 3d printers that let the writers handwave all those pesky boring things like repair and rearm, or maintenance.
The game with such stunning lore as two entire pages of text on the shade of uniform worn by politicians in beuraeu x, and purple prose bloat that makes it 5 times longer than it needs to be.
The game where the mechs are copied designs or look like guys in armour and have nothing to tie them to the setting.
What a fun and lovely game, I hope you enjoy it.

You can literally just read the first paragraphs of history for any of the corporations and see that all of them are older than the modern union, which was founded in 4600u (about 16600ad). Meanwhile that knight mech is manufactured by a corporation founded in 2000u (14000 ad). The bland, monotone onesies are a 3rd committee thing, which is also only mandatory for the bureaucrats who work directly for the state, which the corporations do not, hence why they are called 'corpro-states'

Still think this is the worst point. They're on record almost verbatim doing the "I don't watch any, mecha is weird... I like mecha but only when it's about the characters... I prefer hardcore scifi like the expanse and destiny... but evangelion and votoms are like the anti-mecha!".
>>
>>98393081

>>
>>98391633
Union isn't really as strong as you seem to think it is. The corpos, especially HA and SSC, are in effect their own little fiefdoms that mostly pay lip service to Union because it's profitable, and because Union has successfully monopolized ftl travel, but internally they don't respect Union's utopian policies wherever they can get away with it. And they can get away with it a fair deal because Union is inherently stretched a bit thin because they need to keep expanding their ftl/internet network at sublight speeds.
>>
>>98393114
Good thing they have effectively unlimited population, the largest industrial base in the setting, magic printers that run on farthuffingium, and the eternal magical queefbot, or "galsim" as its apparently called, hmm, galsim... girlsim.... I wonder what this could mean..
. To predict the future and ensure they never lose.
Don't forget, if your campaign results in a setback for the big communist reich then it didn't actually happen, it was all a big simulation run in comrade queefbot. This is in the core rules.

Why would these particular mechs look bland? I'm sure there are thousands of Nelsons in Union service that look like pic rel with a spear.

Same like how not every Atlas has to be decked in tribal trophies or how many Horus frames are said to barely have a consistent look to them.

Pretty much. Mechs designed as a knight or something similar aren't strange, but they need to be mechs instead of dudes in armor. See picrel, it clearly looks like a knight, but it also looks mechanical. You can see vents, cameras, joints, guns, thrusters...

Destiny is very much a "space fantasy" as they say. You've got Guardians of Light fighting against "The Darkness" and at no point do they pretend like paracausal energies are just another form of tech they can implement willy nilly. It's all the big mysterious ball and the scary triangles doing their magic stuff and you're blessed with part of the ball's literal magic like a Final Fantasy 14 warrior of light.

Lancer it unfortunately incapable of presenting those very magical, very special concepts in a coherent way for the setting. Destiny has "a normal revolver" and a "cursed revolver that shoots out fragments of a dead god" and at no point are they equivalent. In Lancer a mundane mech can be on the same level as the "I break the fabric of existence so that I don't shoot a gun that never existed and deal 1 damage per turn" mech, and the latter is presented in a very mundane and boring way. It's not a thing that warrants a "wtf is that monstrosity??" from the people in-universe, but rather a "Oh that's a Pegasus, the mech that shoots out space-time paradoxes at you, not as crazy as that one which has a portal to another plane of existence as its cockpit, my mate used to pilot one of those."

Unless of course you're willing to homebrew the entire setting, in which case, why not just play D&D 4e and rename everything?

>The only people who say this just read Miyazaki bitching about mecha and took it as the word of god instead of just actually watching a mecha anime.
Bold of you to assume the people who say that sort of thing even know Miyazaki's stance on mecha. That sort of opinion is usually formed out of the same vaguely xenophobic disdain for all things Japanese you see all across the western media sphere than any actual first or even secondhand knowledge of the genre.

>effectively unlimited population

>the largest industrial base in the setting
That has a whole bunch of caveats. For one, the entire setting's industrial base is reliant on raw resource production from the KTB (which itself is textual admission that Union are hypocrites; even outside of the logistical issues getting the edges of their own empire up to their utopian standards, it's all built on a foundation of the exploitation built into KTB's society), and for two the bleeding edge of technology (aside from ftl gates and the omninet) is not in Union's hands, it's in the hands of the other corpos and Horus. The corpos license it to Union, sure, but if any corpostate had to come to blows with Union they could just mass-revoke the licenses to cause significant problems.
>magic printers that run on farthuffingium
They aren't instant and still need fuel. You can build a mech in a day but a battleship is probably going to take months, let alone a full naval armada.
>and the eternal magical queefbot, or "galsim" as its apparently called, hmm, galsim... girlsim.... I wonder what this could mean..
It stands for GALactic SIMulation you mongoloid, a perfectly reasonable name if you aren't retarded.
>. To predict the future and ensure they never lose.
It can't guarantee certainty, only speculate on what's possible and likely. And no one can guarantee that it won't eventually spit out another extra-dimensional nonlinear math daemon-god that's even less amicable than the last one, who killed a bunch of people on Mars and then stole a moon. And I imagine those little math-demons that were born in its wake must be really hard for GALSIM to predict considering they just ignore the idea of cause-and-effect.

That's why >>98393295 calls you a liar.

been a few years so i dont remember specifics like names but

- space station repair tech with a white witch/black witch fun with magnets build, uses said fun with magnets to repair stations and ships with ferro fluid super glue

-another guy who changed his build and backstory literally every session

-space mercenary/pirate captain, owns the ship the party uses. uses the IPSN quad mechs

- totally forgot the 4th guy, brand new to TTRPGs. he may have actually just been in an everest the whole time.

campaign was mostly long rim bounty hunting and shipping escort, it was everyones first campaign. we stuck to cowboy bebop/outlaw star vibes. at one point we did actually have a grappler ship battle

its a mercenary campaign in a homebrew sector that covers the pleiades+a bunch of other stuff.

Basically the place was colonised back during the fall by the survivors of a ramshackle fleet of desperates way before union got there, they were discovered and brutally subjugated by the second committee which build a homebrew blink-gate line (alpine line), but when it became clear they were losing the civil war with the third committee they collapsed the entire line cutting them off, so in the 500 years of isolation 3 "factions" emerged, a "not soviet union" thats a mix of native and union culture, a big corpo state that was the local HA branch and a shit ton of small polities made up by the natives.
the campaign takes place 15 years after one gate was reactivated, union only holds a space station and said gate and have two factions, one is the classic "goody good naive idiots" that is usually union, which wants to bring them back into the folds by helping and installing the omninet everywhere, the other is just the union equivalent of the CIA trying to destabilise the place so they have a casus belli (they really want that region due to how close is to boundary garden and how advanced it, making it a great staging area for the distal war)

the party is part of that little black box project made by the less savory side of union, a bunch of convicted pirates, disgraced karrakis navy officers and general riff raff which were given a converted ore hauler and sent in as merc and possible deniable asset. pretty fun especially since they all have mixed feelings about union and so forth.

the first character is not that bad, shes basically the propaganda darling and local mech-nerd, and foils well with the chaotic idol which loves drugs and money, and happily goes out in drunken benders taking jobs for crime syndacates, or just works on the paracausal teleport engine on her mourning cloak while filled to the gills with psychedelics

One of my friends might be starting up a Lancer game pretty soon, so I've been checking out the various frames to see if anything really grabbed me. I really like the idea of the Balor, but I don't really have any context for what the frames actually do in a given situation. How would you typically use/build a Balor pilot? What are the implications of being invested in Horus mechs narratively?
>>
>>98396498
horus is kind of a decentralized anarcho-hacker collective that, when it even manages to organize at all, operates in loose and very secretive shadowy cells of radicals. it has vague ties to highly experimental and illegal technology from the deepest darkest union labs , which may have been "liberated" or may be released intentionally as an off the books testing evaluation of shit that they couldnt be caught doing on the books, and it may also be influenced in part or whole by the escaped ascended supercomputer god RA. some people seek out horus, many others stumble into it by accident or get unintentionally roped into it by another with shady connections, sometimes schematics will literally just appear on your hard drive with a send date 100 years in the future. horus is like a mix of cyberpunk hacker shit, dark government projects and outright supernatural ghost stories all bundled into one.

on the table they tend to be about doing archetypal things in unusual ways, lots of weird tech, hacking, controling. often quite flimsy compared to the other manufacturers, and they have a penchant for running NHP AIs

the balor itself plays like a regenerating bruiser that also spins up a tornado of aoe damage centered on itself. its decent with tech and gets bonuses to hack with scanner swarm but its sensor range is insanely short, so it usually isnt a good chassis for hacking builds with certain exceptions that work well in point blank range (minotaur comes to mind). balor minotaur creates a tarpit kind of a guy that locks down anything that gets close with minotaurs slows and movement penalties and rips into them with its heavy mount and aoe damage effects. the lesson of thinking tomorrows thought plays into this. pair with gorgon for more reaction and bodyguarding effects

balors unique HP regen mechanic heavily incentivizes you to have a massive HP pool as it doesnt have any native armor, so all of its defense is through raw meat points and regeneration.

the LL6 buildcrafting thing is weird, because thats generally the level you need for a full build to come together, more than that tends to be superfluous apart from core bonuses and attributes and maybe some talents, but you get diminishing returns for unlocking more licenses at higher levels apart from just having a fully different mech build available as an option in the hangar to hotswap between

but below LL6, it can be tough to get all the pieces together to do anything particularly tricky or combo intensive like you can at 6, so for the most part with very few exceptions, if you are going a build with a specific frame in mind, i would just get 3 LLs in that frame in order. most builds that focus on a frame will go 3 deep into it anyways since a lot of the best features of a license are in the last levels. and if you're worrying about fucking up your build by picking the wrong thing or going too many levels in another thing to get by until your build comes together, read pic related and dont worry, you can rebuild your guy as you go

basically just get the stuff you need to be functional first, and when it doubt just go straightforward into a license you like instead of worry about 1 or 2 level dips into 3 or 4 different licenses

Yeah this >>98402154 is pretty much the way to do it.
For instance there's a fairly common Tagetes/Drake - striker/support build that takes advantage of Tagetes' bonus of being next to allies, and Drake's guns and shields. After that you can put more points HA licenses such as tokugawa or genghis for heat shenanigans, or go SSC with swallowtail for lock-on and big range, and you kinda just keep going from there depending on what you want to do.

i would swap something out for a melee or CQB weapon. at some point somethings going to get in your face. i'd decide between the mortar and the pair of nexus and swap one of those mounts for like a charged blade, even if you get rid of it in a level or two. the everest is lucky in that it has enough slots to take a melee and still have plenty of firepower at range

in the early levels, it helps to be versatile, especially since most of your "defender" party members dont actually have their defender rules yet, so you wont be getting intercepts or shields or cover or anything

some mechs just need whats in their own loicense to be the the most effective version of themselves (nelson, kidd, tokugawa, and emperor all come to mind). be aware "effective" is always white room theory crafting to the max in this game because it leans heavily into team play synergies and covering each other's weaknesses due to the GM always having access to at least 1 npc that will hard counter you.

for the vlad, it really depends if you want to invest into the striker or controller part of what they do. proccing dismemberment as often as possible can be amazing for your whole team, so picking something like bw 2 for the plate and ww1 for the pinning spire are both good (throw on the projector shield and some evasion with it for that to be extra funny)

for striker youll also want that ww1 for the lance and maybe bb2 for the nanosword, so ideally you'd barrage lance -> immobilize- -> ram (accuracy with pankrati) -> nanosword with at least executioner 1. Could actually be a really good use case for having fomorian frame so that at least when they ram you in retaliation you aren't proned a good chunk of the time. Both of these of course you want impaler gun and vanguard 3 just because it's so amazing

>where else would there be fighting in the gay space utopia?

the setting generally assumes that if you are playing in the enforcable utopian core, that you are either part of the enforcers/contracted with them keeping the peace, quelling uprisings, helping with disasters, etc or part of one of the multitude of disruptors who cause problems in the utopia like anarchist cells, religious cults, hidden pockets of the former regime, dark government facility gone awry, breakaway political faction, etc.

its not your typical dungeons and dragons adventure where you get paid in gold and treasure, and i understand that thats difficult to wrap your head around. you have to think more like organizations with operatives. and while its true there is no scarcity of resources on the core world, there are still scarcity of other things like territory/land/planets, scarcity of talent (hard to replace a breakthrough team of scientists being held hostage by religious extremists), scarcity of permission (licenses for example are handed out scarcely and characters may be motivated by promotions for better access), scarcity of information (particular data terminals housing important information under threat from destruction or sabotage)
>>
>>98404948
It sounds like you have to make a lot of assumptions on the part of the setting to accommodate for the presence of your PCs, rather than the other way around.

It reminds me of how a lot of mini war games used to write their fluff from the perspective of the faction, with the idea being that between all the rashomon style perspectives the reader will be able to figure at least one general picture between the different overlappping interpretations. But since the only voice given by the narrative is the Union’s, and the writers seem to favor them in out of game material, it’s harder to decide what is just propaganda and what’s to be taken at face value.
>>

What gets me is that they open cans of worms and then try to sweep everything away before the players can have access. It breaks down if you start asking reasonable questions. Printers, ansible tech, enforcing licenses, how printers work, it's all technobabble space magic bullshit. Saying the PCs can't do something because some timey-wimey space magic AI says you can't is a shit justification for game design. they are united in the same way the US and China are united: extremely dependent on each other for economic sustainability while also being the number one adversaries to one anothers spheres of influence to the point of near open hostility. the core worlds are pretty much consolidated between each, though all three have internal factions vying for power. its the far frontier that each now is looking to control, particularly the dawnline shore which is farther out than even the long rim but has a dozen hospitable planets that each wants control over. each faction is pretty much one big win from entering into their golden age, its why the book says that even though you are a small team of Lancers in the grand scheme of things, your team can be the ones that kickstart an avalanche of changes.

China and America are two separate states. KTB is a vassal of Union after SecCom rocked their shit. KTB is a part of Union, even if there's some degree of independence because it's so large. They're all still part of the same state, and the only examples of factions outside of the corpo-states (which are also gay and I hate them conceptually)

>>98405044
My point was that since they're a part of Union, there's no major factions outside of Union besides Aun, which is more mysterious and distant and not really a factor since they never finished the splatbook for it. There's no perspective on Union from outside of it, and it makes them feel overbearing and totalitarian. Union is written less like a space-UN and more like the aliens trying to invade Earth in X-Files.

You could use hecatoncheries or balor to deal damage in AOE zones, or use the flamethrower of genghis as simple AOE damage.Combining the flamethrower with supermassive can be funny, giving it knockback, and since it creates patches of flame, you knock the enemy back into the patches of flame it makes.
>>
>>98404901

the main things I want are

>both damage and control
>minimal reliance on "setup actions" like boost, lock on, or stabilize unless I can tack a billion different riders onto them
>lots of action options
>>
>>98404011
I'll look into it, thanks
>>
>>98406035
When it comes to lock on, you can get it for "free" sort of if you have at least 3 levels in horus mechs. The "Lesson of the Held Image" horus core bonus.
1/round, as a reaction at the start of any allied character’s turn, you may make a Lock On tech action against any character within line of sight and Sensors.

If you are willing to boost a bit (because boost is just extra movement) going into melee is a good way to do aoe without fancy lockons etc. For example the manticore license comes with a range 3 cone pistol that costs heat to use, and it's frame has an ability that deals automatic damage 1/round if you take heat to an enemy within 3, so you run up to enemies and use this, it also has a chain lightning gun, and several hacking actions that do stuff like swap places with enemies, group them together in a pile (perfect for AOE) or try to stun. You can also fire that cone pistol as overwatch, meaning enemies can't really walk past you without getting blasted.

You might also be able to do a grenade chucker build? Grenades always also give you a mine, so you get two variants of the action, so having a pile of different grenades/mines gives you a lot of options. The Iskander or Gilgamesh are probably the main things to look at there?

Hey all, I'm new to Lancer. I've read the core rulebook several times, and think I have an ok understanding of everything. I'm working on my first build and wanted some input from more experienced people. I know I want to use the Sherman as my frame, love the idea of it being a trooper mech, love the GIANT DEATH LASER, love that it can make its own cover. So LL1-3 are easy and done. LL3-6 is where I'm stuck. I'm between the Tokugawa for Deep Well Heat Sinks and LUCIFER, or the Death's Head for Core Siphon and All-Theater Movement Suite. DWHS seems great on paper, but it costs 4 fucking SP, so I'd have to dump a good bit of HASE into Systems to make it fit. On the other hand, Core Siphon fits with no Systems investment, meaning I can up my Hull or Agility, and be able to fly on top of that. Which of these options is less retarded?

How much terrain is your GM using? The ability to stick to terrain and walk up walls etc is going to vary based on whether you face a lot of terrain from "useless" to "amazing". The Vulture DMR and Railgun are pretty awesome, but if you want to keep using your laser guns those wont help. You can also consider taking shit that's movement or defensive, since you already have your guns and all, like accelerate/warp grenades from the sunzi.to help advance your team up to firing positions.

How useful flight, climbing to high ground, heat reduction etc is to you will be something you won't have full grasp on until you've had your build in the field, once you see your weaknesses not just in theory, but on the field, you might realise you want something totally different, like grenades that knockback enemies out of cover or something.
>>
>>98404948
>i understand that thats difficult to wrap your head around.
It's not, but your patronizing smug tone is noted.
>you have to think more like organizations with operatives.
Again, this isn't rare at all. Plenty of games do this well. FFG's Star Wars: Age of Rebellion has wonderful rules and guidelines for playing a Rebel cell (or an Imperial Outpost). Only War, Dark Heresy, and Wrath and Glory all have the same for playing as different Imperial organizations and the hierarchies within. Edge of the Empire also has all sorts of different qrds on the various factions at play in the Outer Rim.

Not only does Lancer have none of this since the default assumption is Lancers are mercenaries contracted by the government to genocide mudfarmers and thus aren't actually beholden to anything (not even RoEs, since warcrime flamethrower mechs are given out at LL0), but they also waste your time going into mundane detail on what color jumpsuit the different bureaucratic departments that have zero influence on the actual zone of play.

Number 19, you are religious primitives who joined unions army under false pretenses, and are now turning their mechs against them to liberate your world and exterminate the heretics who took your god and replaced it with a false idol.
Number 9 Clarion Call has you fighting for your nation on a divided planet, attempting to conquer the other continents.
Number 4 dead orbit is about looting a spaceship, with you fighting other raiders and pirates over it.
>>
>>98408046
So that’s three out of 20 then? Or are there more? Cause 4 doesn’t sound inherently anti-anything since the spaceship sounds like it could just be abandoned, and I’m just questioning how in 19 “religious primitives” could work out the controls to such complex mechanical titans

So it's a planetary war between several local factions. Hardly anti-union.
>Number 4
So you try to take a ship to become space pirates? Again its not anti Union and the moment they decide your a bother they will just delete you.
In exactly one of these 3 the players are explicitly anti big gay commie state, the others are either a small local affair or them becoming some minor raiders, and none of them involve actually working for pne if the, or becoming a, large anti-union faction. In the end none of them result in even a speedbump for the Union.

>But all this proves is you literally didn't read the book.

NTA, but GALSIM/The Five Voices existing at all is probably one of the worst setting conceits possible. The fact that, as described, page 383:

>"All stories that take place in a game of Lancer are, in a way, canon: no matter how far they diverge from this book (or others), they are simply alternate possibilities, filed away on storage racks deep under the Martian polar ice."

I get the initial intention, that it's a way to grant the status of soft-canon to every game played no matter the homebrew or setting differences - but what it then implies is that, since a game is technically just an alternate possibility generated by the forecast, there is a hardline 'canon' for what happens in Lancer and thus, what you do at your table doesn't matter because you're reduced to a prediction. It means that, according to Lancer, your game effectively is of no consequence beyond being used to, once again, used by Union to ensure that they suffer no defeat.

Essentially, what this means is Lancer imposes canon upon >>(You)r game regardless of your preferences. This is annoying, but it becomes much worse when you then factor the creator's politics into the mix. I know, beating a dead horse, commie game lol, et cetera et cetera, but the result is Lancer comes across as a game written specifically to ensure a specific status quo, line of events and outcome regardless of what might happen at >>(You)r table. It means that, even if I don't give a shit about all the shitflinging, by the writing of the book, I am still being used to reinforce Union - and since the creators outright call it "a communist utopia", it means that even if the book is meant to be Union's point of view and Union isn't meant to be perfect, when the game is outright stated to be about acting in DEFENSE of a COMMUNIST UTOPIA, I am not allowed to stay out of it.

>But anon, you can just ignore it
That's not the issue here. I can and will ignore it. The issue is that I am not ignored in turn.

>>98408505
I would agree with you, but the specific wording is that "ALL STORIES THAT TAKE PLACE IN A GAME OF LANCER ARE IN A WAY CANON NO MATTER HOW FAR THEY DIVERGE FROM THE BOOK THEY ARE ALTERNATE POSSIBILITIES MADE BY GALSIM". Emphasis on "ALL STORIES". It's annoying that the game isn't willing to go halfway and say "your game could simply be a forecasted possibility, up to you", it makes it clear that by diverging from official Lancer releases, you are making your game a forecasted possibility as opposed to a real event that happened in Lancer's setting. There is no ambiguity in this wording despite the intention, and that's my issue.

>>98408518
When it says that "NO MATTER HOW FAR THEY DIVERGE FROM THIS BOOK", that's saying that official Lancer releases are the hard canon, the true events, and my game is a possibility filed under the polar ice cap.
>>
>>98408541
Yeah, its a possibility from point at which it was predicted, which means by executing it in your game it goes from being a prediction to being a foretelling.
Just because they predicted your game doesn't prevent it from coming to pass.

Also yes, Massif press has books that represent hard canon. True events THAT WERE ALSO PREDICTED BY GALSIM. That didn't stop them from coming to pass either.

nta, but the whole "every game is a simulation predicted by a super computer" thing reminds me of this one isekai that presents its main character as an unbeatable god of death, to the point he could kill things that didn't actually exist. The writer was once asked "Is there any other character in fiction that could defeat Isekai Death God Man?", and his response was "Yes, but such a series wouldn't be take place in the same universe and have to operate on entirely different rules".

It was a response that turned off a lot of people not because it was true, because on the face of it he's just stating the obvious facts that such a dream match would by default not take place in the same exact setting, but because it comes off as controlling. That the writer couldn't conceive of a scenario where his precious death god would actually lose to someone, and therefore would repudiate any attempts to even acknowledge they could be inferior. It's very unlikely that's what he intended, but that's how a lot of people took it. And it reminds me a lot of the supercomputer thing because a lot of game tables feel that their games are theirs and theirs alone, and that the setting is a "guideline" and not a commandment. And if the game's guideline is that all games are only possibilities, that feels more like the game's creators are trying to take ownership of the game away from the tables by declaring them "just a possibility" beforehand, as though the players can't be fully trusted with how they want to handle Lancer.

I do get what they were going for, but I agree that this supercomputer idea was a mistake in writing that they should fix in the next iteration. Don't call everything "simulations" or "possibilities", instead emphasize that with how big the Union is that nobody but the supercomputers have an irrefutable understanding of the galaxy, and every game reflects different chunks of info gleaned from those supercomputers, even ones differing from "canon".

It could be like GALSIM predicts things with near 100% accuracy but translating it's output into something human-readable is nearly impossible to do with 100% accuracy for anything but the most mundane and obvious predictions.

Wallflower sees you basically head to the world that caused the downfall of the second committee. No idea what rising sun nanites are.
3 heat in burst 2 will take out grunts, but wont be enough to expose or stress tougher enemies on its own, most enemies don't build up heat on themselves, so pumping out that 3 heat in a burst only matters if either you or a party member is going to apply additional heat.

The ability to grapple things and keep them at range 2 instead of 1 is pretty cruel.
What's your gameplan during battles you don't use the core power?

>No idea what rising sun nanites are.
a frankly bullshit pilot item from the adventure the GM is running. +1 accuracy to everything for 1 scene (including mech stuff), then you +1 difficulty until you rest. However, you can just keep taking it becuase its not limited

>3 heat in burst 2 will take out grunts, but wont be enough to expose or stress tougher enemies on its own, most enemies don't build up heat on themselves, so pumping out that 3 heat in a burst only matters if either you or a party member is going to apply additional heat.
it's worth noting that this is at the end of every turn

>What's your gameplan during battles you don't use the core power?
honestly, I'm genuinely not sure. maybe ramming people into walls? I'll probably have a lot of ram attacks per turn by LL3 due to all the ways to do it as a free action
>>
Do you guys have homebrew mechs that you wish were expanded upon?

I played a GMS Hekla many years back which was basically the robot from Ultrakill in the tabletop. It felt like a unique concept and the creator never made anything about it after. Real shame.
>>
>>98411331
Well, you can always play a straightfoward gun character the rest of the time. Like, you have an HMG and a Mortar, so even if you arent rushing in to spam grapples, you could lay down fire and violently punish anything stupid enough to come close with rams and grapples.
But I'd seriously consider for your LL1 to look for something you take SPECIFICALLY to use in those non core power battles. Have two versions of your strategy, and show your GM that, make them have to guess which one they are using, or play in fear of you swapping it up.
Remember that whilst enemy pilots don't have separate brains, the GM does, some items and abilities don't necessarily do a lot, but they make the enemy commander (the GM in this case) have to make difficult choices. For example imagine you play the vlad, enemies take damage for attacking it in melee, you might barely ever trigger that, then realise, it's because they FEAR attacking you in melee. Create a similar situation, where any time the GM refuses to enter grappling range, you punish them.
>>
other than seige specialist and heavy gunner, what does a cannon-heavy build need?
>>
>>98411533
A cannon.
To be honest I think it varies based on what kind of cannons you are using. Some of them do heat buildup, loading, are superheavy etc.
>>
>>98411552
hmg, mortars, and whatever the fuck the iskander is packing
>>
>>98411570
HMG and Mortar pretty straightforward, should just work with those talents. The things you might want to consider are how you are going to get to your firing position (cover, high ground, etc) and what to do if enemy tries to melee you. Though with Iskander you could always just leave some mines in front of you so nobody can get close.
>>
>>98411570
Oh also cannons can have the "supermassive mod" from the caliban, which gives them knockback 1, or knockback 2 if you are willing to give it ordnance. Could get your stub cannon to knockback 2 or 3, or just be used to get aoe knockback on the mortar.

Ok, ended up changing up this build. I replaced nuke cavalier and combined arms with siege specialist and walking armory. Combined with my mortar, these should let me funnel enemies into place in both short range and melee, allowing me to spam the mortar.

I replaced the flight system with smoke charges to protect me against ranged attacks (since at size 3, its hard to benefit from better cover), and shifted points from engineering into health. This means I'm not going to be able to capitalize on heat generation to the same degree.

The difference is all the materiel the US left in both locations wasn't loicense locked to be unusable and the US/Blackwater couldn't 3D print more of it on location in 6-8 hours or less. Nor did they have unrestricted RoEs that allowed them to just bulldoze cities because they wanted to replace the population with their own.

That's the funny thing about the Union or THIRDCOM or whatever name it's going by now, they're far more ruthless jingoistic colonizers than even the US at its worst. They make Israel look restrained.

That's where Horus comes in. They're already supplying one uprising in the KTB with executeables that transform mining-grade mechs into a military-capable pattern group.

>Nor did they have unrestricted RoEs that allowed them to just bulldoze cities because they wanted to replace the population with their own.

>Union can't really do that either
They offer their must untrustworthy mercenaries (LL0) flamethrowers and suicide bomber mechs. These are not peacekeeping tools.
>>
>>98415097
heat is basically health, take enough stress and you die the same as if you had been shot, so making the enemy go nuclear with heat is a solid playstyle if you want to actually hack to kill.

like the other guy mentioned you can also use forced movement, impariments and status effects to put enemies in bad positions or make them vulnerable for your teammates to gang up on

another option is a dual build that combines hacking with damaging effects you create like droneswarms, greywash, mines, caltrops, etc

also there are some mechs that have hacks that just straight up do damage, like kobold who has invades that can burn or deal kinetic damage when certain conditions are met
>>
>>98415375
Horus isn't Union. You need to be LL1 to get the flamethrower, and LL2 in a completely different track to get the suicide bomber mech. LL0 players are assumed to be competent and have a fair bit of training and/or experience already.

There is one thing you got right though. The mech-sized flamethrowers aren't peacekeeping tools, they're for genociding the first (corporeal) alien species we found "aggressive foliage management."
>>
>>98415885
Yes and no. For full enemies, heat is health, for grunts it kills them, for enemies with multiple stress it kills them, for enemies with exactly 1 stress, it just causes exposed (which makes you take double damage) personally i kinda dislike this rule and think anything without extra stress should still blow up on the second heat fill. Oh also anything without a heat cap just takes heat as straight energy damage.
>>98415987
I think the fact the players are limited to the big four + horus also makes it unclear that other mech companies exist. In the descriptions of various NPC mechs and similar shit it mentions other smaller manufacturers etc. The framing of LL0 also doesn't really make it clear that you are an "elite" pilot, that customizing your own mech at all is something only those with some experience do, compared to all the normal pilots who just use factory presets.
>>
so, if you use an aoe weapon with heavy gunner, does the AoE only affect the heavy gunner target?
>>
>>98416115
As far as I can tell, you pick any target that could be within the aoe to set the covering fire on, but only that one guy is "suppressed" by your fire. When they move, you attack them as a reaction, and that uses the full attack rules. But its going to halve damage against EVERYthing in the AOE, because you only roll damage once, even though you make separate attack rolls. Keep in mind you can choose to use your AOE at any point in the triggering movement, so make sure they move near their friends before firing your half damage shot.
>>
>>98413161
Rice farmers and Afghans had access to parts, ammo, and training either from the vast stocks left behind, training from communist advisers, or stuff they had picked up. They also had an inherent level of understanding thanks to living in the modern world.
What your doing is giving a medieval serf a machinegun and teaching him how to shoot. When that gun breaks or needs servicing he cannot fix it, when it runs out of ammunition he cannot make more. Likewise, when your ungas mech breaks he cannot fix or replace it, he lacks a magic 3d printer to make another. It eventually gets cannibalised for materials or is stuck in a temple somewhere as a religious icon. Overall loss for the big communist state? Nothing, they can return to strongarm the people, glass the planet, or just wait a couple of generations until the mechs are worshipped, and return as divine emmissionaries

All this horus talk has made me realize something. Horus is (supposedly) an anti establishment group using ilegal tech that bypasses regular limits and regulations, right? Why don't they make their stuff infinitely printable instead of the "if you print a new mech the previous one is deactivated" that has the rest of the game?

I know it's to patch up some mechanical stuff (because the way you get stuff in this game is just stupid and they had to patch it up), but it doesn't make sense inuniverse.
>>
>>98416741
Horus isn't really a group, or at least if it is, significant portions of horus aren't actually in the real group. I think what you say is definitely true of the open source hacker portion of horus, but less true for the ones using it to do illegal tech tests, crazed religious nuts, or members of the "real" horus if it actually exists as an organisation and isn't just union intelligence trying to draw connections where there aren't any, plus deluded idiots that think they've joined the illuminati.
>>
>>98416632
The last one is the most likely outcome given the resource priorities and ideologies involved, waiting a few generations. It's also "victory" in a sense for the players. Driving off an invader for a hundred+ years isn't some false victory, if you defeat a dragon in D&D do you think it's false because there are still dragons and one might come to terrorise this village again later? The people alive or free today are because of your actions, and it will be up to another band of heroes or whatever to deal with the threat in the future.

Honestly, I take it you'd hate to play star wars games as rebels, because the empire will always come back.

>>98416790
The Empire went to pieces though. And any GM stupid enough to pull a “The people alive or free today are because of your actions, and it will be up to another band of heroes or whatever to deal with the threat in the future.” kind of ending is going to get looks at the table, because unless that’s your way of signaling you’re preparing them fir a sequel campaign where they are that band if heroes, they’re going to ask why you’re trying to ruin their ending. The players worked hard for that victory, and a reminder that their victory is completely impermanent in the face of an overwhelming force (unless agreed upon beforehand as the tone of the campaign) is just going to bum them out no matter how you spin it. So, yes. They really would be tweaked if you don’t pretend these nobodies from a hick unga bunga plamet did in fact win so hard they repelled the galactic empire forever, and given how long it took them to get to that point it’d be hard to blame them for being that naive yet hopeful about it.
>>

If that dragon is part of an overarching conglomerate of countless dragons that live on many continents any my parties tribal peoples cannot ever get to affect them or prevent them returning and incinerating the land and people then it is a hollow victory that the party knows is meaningless, and ultimately leads to them being dissatisfied with the campaign because they are unable to meaningfully change things or deal a blow against the conglomerate. It's a shit campaign that exists to make your players feel helpless and weak.

Your emotionally invested in defending this mess from all criticism. >>

Cause you’d have to be a prick to tell your party their efforts amounted to not even a footnote in history. Most freedom fighters aren’t in it for a “temporary victory”, they’re in it to give their oppressor a black eye they won’t soon forget if slaying them isn’t possible. Which you think the kind of crowd that plays this game would be all for, but it seems not.
>>
>>98419238
The crowd that plays Lancer generally sees Union as a lesser evil compared to the brutal caste system in the KTB, the fascist leanings of HA, unethical experimentation going on in SSC, rogue AIs with aspirations of godhood (or worse, demonhood), certain parts of Horus, and just your run of the mill space pirates and other criminals who just want to be dicks.
>>
>>98419355
Weren’t a good chunk of those caused or incited by the Union in some manner?

ok, I dropped hunter though since it sadly doesn't work while grappling. I'm debating if I should dump the jump jets too for the same reason

>as if its something bleak and not fuel for another campaign
You are wilfully ignorant but let me try and enlighten you:
There is no winning for the ungas. The party has no actual long term victory goal because it is impossible for them. No matter how hard they fight, or try, they cannot affect the Dragon conglomerate. The magic arms and gear the dragon bequeathed them as its enforcers, before they slew it, will rapidly degrade and fall apart and they cannot repair or replace them and without them they cannot hurt a dragon. The party cannot leave their land to strike the conglomerate. The next dragon to come along, or dragons, will butcher them, initiate punitive killings on the populace, then enslave the people and rewrite their culture to one of dragon worship. There is no good end, just a quick victory then inevitable defeat.

Well said. It's like the other guy says, the union sees planets wanting to be left alone as the enemy and its an ideology the fans follow.

most systems dont cause you to explode when you run out of mana or stamina
>>
>>98419094
Funny, because a lot of people complain/gush about how overwhelmingly bleak 40K is on account of Chaos' inevitable victory
>>
>>98419355
Why you always lying?
>>
>>98417124
>Heat is way closer to a mana or stamina
Still bleak
>>
>>98419403
I don't see the point of tactical knives since if your enemies are in melee range, you'd be better off ramming them out of it and then grappling them

Union did technically create RA and are therefore responsible for a ton of NHPs that manifested in its wake, but that was not something anyone could have really seen coming. And besides, RA is not the only one out there, there's another one worshiped by the Aunics that showed up first and a third one that Union isn't even aware of that might not have been created yet but is definitely capable of already affecting reality on some level, and it is purely malicious. Point is, NHPs and other paracausal entities in general would have existed regardless of whether or not Union was fucking around with the Five Voices.

The KTB was on its own for something like 8,000 years before the came into contact with Union, their shit is their own fault.

Harrison Armory is the direct remnant of Union's past sins, so they are definitely something they'd be responsible for, but they're trying to be better now. But the schism was long enough ago that, even accounting for the time dilation BS that goes on in the setting, I'm pretty sure everyone directly involved on either side is already dead and has been replaced by new generations.

Running out of mana SHOULD make you explode. Running out of stamina should give you a stroke.
>>
>>98419530
>and a third one that Union isn't even aware of that might not have been created yet but is definitely capable of already affecting reality on some level, and it is purely malicious
Oh, so it's budget Chaos Gods except gnostic atheist. Yawn.

Why the fuck are rationalist atheists so obsessed with Roko's Basilisk? It's the dumbest shit ever.
>>
>>98419747
They want to feel special in imagining an all-power entity would care about them in some capacity even if to punish them, but lacking a god figure to do it substitute it with a man made AI instead.
>>
>>98419747

That's okay anons.

More proof, if anywhere needed, that the average lancer fangenderneutral has no experience doing physical graft or exercise.

the rationalists are absolute pseuds. They don't really have any sort of grasp of basic logic
>>
what exactly is the point of swallowtail. Every benefit it gets looks like ass
>>
>>98419747
They have about as much in common with the chaos gods as they do any other pantheon in fiction or real-world mythology.
>>
>>98419970
"Non-temporal entity that conspires to influence its own creation and is a being of pure malice" isn't unique to Roko's Ball-licker or nuChaos, but is absolutely popularized by the two.
>>
>>98419941
Ranged support. 20 sensors, can shred enemies from range with Lock On (particularly with Markerlight), and turns invisible for free. The NHP and core power are both designed to ensure you're never on the back foot. There's not much raw power there but you basically ensure that everything is smooth as butter for the rest of your team. Whether a player finds that fun and interesting is mostly personal taste.
>>
>>98419797
Its all good anon.
Is there any part of the setting or game mechanics you do like?
>>
>>98419941
Itz kewl :3
>>
>>98420076
I like how the Everest looks. It reminds me of the GM. And to a lesser extent the Chomo and Sarga, even if the names are a bit out there. I don't necessarily hate the other robot designs except maybe Horus's which are basically minor war constructs from K6BD, I just think they internally clash with each other too much to be believably from the same setting.
>>
already getting tired of lancer and my game hasn't even started yet. Why is the design space so fucking tiny?
